I've fixed hundreds of chases like this. Sad fact is, for a very long time, building code in most areas did not require vapor barrier/waterproofing behind vinyl siding.
I need you to come to my house to work on mine. I cant find anyone that wants to work or the ones that to work does a terrible job. My roof has been leaking around the chimney for over a year now. I had the roof redone and it still leaked. They came back to my house 4 times and it still leaks. I'm tired over dealing with it. I have no roofing experience or I would do it myself. It is a terrible situation..
Great vid, sir. Only one issue that I saw, and that was the process itself. It would have been better, imo, if you would video AS you are doing the repairs, flashing, and such. There are a lot of folks who don’t know the correct, step by step, process. Other than that, Great information.!.!.! Thanks!
I really like the video. At 3:53 in on the video you mention the one small whole at the intersection of where the ice & water shield and the roofing compound you will use to cover that. And then a thought occurred to me and I wanted to ask your opinion. Could you not use a piece of I&W in the same fashion as you would install and outside corner on an EPDM roof?
The problem with the top of the chimney is the j-channel. The water that drips over the top of the chimney during high wind flows down and wicks behind the top edge of the j-channel and behind the siding. I've been repairing that problem for 40years.
Nice job. How much would that job cost minus the materials. I’ve a Siding wrapped chimney with looks like no proper flashing that needs that exact repair done.
As I stated in a reply to this video, the most common problem with a vinyl wrapped chimney chase is the lack of a waterproof membrane behind the siding. If the membrane isn't there, the best flashing on earth is no help. And to be certain to stop the leaks, the chimney should be stripped to the wood, including the cap. Then the entire structure waterproofed, along with a new cap that is water tight, and proper flashing. I've done hundreds of these repairs.
Wow. There is so many things wrong here. The OSB actually helped sponge up water which makes me laugh. If you ha e any doubt Ica and Water. That way your lumpers can learn to be help on those late days. Great job guys. That's 3/4 inch channel on any wood meeting the roof is missed so many times. But that step flashing......
Yeah I have an issue.... Why didn't you just install ice gaurd on the entire chimney box? You had all the siding off. Not a big deal but I mean just think that would of been better.. and you can install Z flashing under the wood trim and that is the best way to prevent further siding issues
Ok am I the only person who knows that the home owner got screwed by whom built this house and it just goes to show just because it says roofer on the side of billy bobs truck get referrals Hire a professional
Unfortunately, for a long time, building code allowed vinyl siding, as well as other types, to be installed with no waterproofing behind it. I honestly couldn't count how many chimney chases, rotted windows, rotted doors, and leak damaged ceilings I've replaced because of this.
Replace wood, paint or stain both sides, and caulk behind them not on top of the seam. This is a shabby job which will we water tight for about 2 years tops.
That actually would do very little to solve the problem. Osb is never code rated to be a waterproof part of a structure, no matter how much sealant you apply. Waterproof membrane must be applied over the OSB, then it must extend down over the proper flashing to ensure a leak proof chimney. I've done hundreds of these repairs.
Very simple chimney to flash. The cricket behind a side chimney is bizarre. That deserves a " come on man!!".

Very good job how much you charge for that project?

Nice work. But why not paint the metal chimney cap ¿
tested roof, hold 200 lbs?

Man you didn’t even show your work with the most important parts to flashing.
It's amazing how incompetent a large number of professionals are.
