The fact the re-sculpted minis, utilized the isle of blood minis, and got new minis is great for the game and setting. If I weren’t already working on Empire, Goblins, Warriors of Chaos, and Bretonnia I’d buy so many. But I will resist, for now.
I put buying the Empire on the backburner entirely because of the High Elves. And theres even more than I anticipated, I want basically everything they got. Straight up a "shut up and take my money" situation.

As a diehard High Elf fan for decades, I'm stoked that those people who have been fleeced by eBay for years can fill their boots - but this release leaves me a bit flat. We've been spoiled by having some of the best artwork and models for years. Even ignoring the full gamut of 7th/8th edition plastics, drink in the metallic greatness of 5th's mounted hero Eldroth, 6th's unsurpassed Phoenix Guard, and even Aenur for Mordheim. Artwork-wise, it's always pants-off time for the 4th Ed starter box art, the 5th ed S-tier armybook cover - and it all culminates in Paul Dainton for 7th/8th, whose work is my favourite the studio has produced for any game. The Arcane Journal design? Tepid, flat, grim, devoid of magic - sadly, it looks like digital fan art. Where has the studio spent their energy on the models? Nudging around sprue geometry of existing plastics - especially on a chaff unit like Reavers?! A very AOS-adjacent vibey pirate? A Chracian Lord - which is fine - but was it worth the energy in making a generic character and not just updating Korhil's pretty meh second iteration? I'll buy stuff because I'm addicted to the snooty white-robed gits. And I'm glad other people love the new models and finally get access to the kits. But looking at all the monkey-hands in the battalion box, the silver-helmed cartoon horses, the artwork - feels like they've missed a trick here to bring back that old HE magic that sucks people into them.
Absolutely correct. 7E HE introduced ASF for them (and not for DE and WE… which caused inordinate amounts of gnashing of teeth…) and dragons had tiers again.
FOR ULTHUAN!!! Been waiting for High elves since Old World was first announced and aways was a big fan of the White Lions. I'm so fucking hyped they are getting an army and overjoyed at how great the new minis look. Elves with axes will never not be cool!
Ishaya Vess is my favourite High Elf sculpt GW have released in over a decade. Ancient Pro-tip, the hands on the spearmen and archers look way less awful if you paint them like gloves instead of flesh.
I think the island of blood minis have all had a bit of a digital polish especially the cloth, hair, feathers and straps are just a bit crisper. I guess it makes sense if they have to retool it, it's more of a digital kitbash than a full resculpt though.
I’m very excited for the High elves. They were the army that I always remember from when my cousin played when I was a kid. Their aesthetics are peak Warhammer in my opinion and I’m glad so many old kits are returning.
You said to let you know if we were hype, I am hype! Ive always seen my self as a Dwarf Player and have collected Dwarfs for AoS, now the Old World and plenty of other games. However with the announcement of the elves I realised I did actually have my old Island of Blood set, mostly unbuilt from when I was a lad. Ive pulled it out now and have already built the SwordMasters and SeaGuard from the set and looking at the rest of it I am seriously considering picking up an army. As you say it being all plastic apart from the special character is really appealing and although i will likely pick up a dragon the unique infantry units really appeal to me. The special characters are pretty cool, with their matching stances Korhil and the Lord of Chrace will look aloof from the unit of mid swing WhiteLions. Its a reall opportunity to pick up a new army, try some new paint styles, and make something cohesive, modern yet classic. Cheers Rob and Val keep it up!

While I do quite like the big dragons and monsters, I'm a much bigger fan of high elf infantry, cavalry, and chariots. So as long the combo box is reasonably priced I will probably grab a couple. I originally wanted to get into them when I first played TWWH2 and I was SO sad when I learned the setting had been killed off and while the lumineth are great I am so pumped to finally be able to get into proper high elves.
6:12 Its not competitive, but it’ll *feel* like an army and be a fantastic project. For people getting started playing with their mates in my view this battalion’s not quite chaos or dwarfs but solid B tier.
The most fun I had in Total War Warhammer (3) was playing the Imrik campaign where you're dropped in the Darklands with extreme adversity on all sides, but if you overcome (by playing Dragon Pokemon) you snowball in power massively and form a giant Order block in the eastern region of the Warhammer world, all through the power of DRAGON. So I think a re-release of Imrik's old model (with the old S dragon too!) would be nice. I mean the new-er HElf dragon model (the one where its jumping off a tactical rock) is nice, but those S Dragons are pretty classic! So I could totally see them bringing him back for the Grognards (and perhaps if we do Dogs of War one day, I remember there is effectively a Mercenary version of Imrik (and his dragon) whose name escapes me. Also, very happy to see some Island of Blood sculpts returning, they look nice still.
I was really hopeful that Imrik in exile was going to be one of our armies of infamy, since it's actually connected to the Old World and the Border Princes.
The 5th edition HE book was my first GW purchase, when I was about 9, the one with Tyrion on the front in the mountain pass. They remain my utterly favourite army in any system and I have around 10,000 8th ed points of them. Other than the BRB and Forces of fantasy, all my hobby money since announcement has been saved to add to that number Suffice to say, I'm pretty excited
white can be tricky when you start, but very easy once you learn. You generally want about 90% paint coverage of whatever is white to be at your greatest highlight. If using citadel paints: Ulthuan Grey is a good paint to get the clean white look, surprisingly enough. I would probably base paint with Rakarth Flesh, wash with blue(drak nightshade), highlight rakarth flesh, highlight Ulthuan Grey. If you want to do any edge highlights then that's when id consider pure white. As you see I'm more of a base, wash, highlight guy and haven't really messed with contrast paints much, but I'm sure theirs an approach to do it that way as well.
Cant wait to get my hands on some sky cutters (gonna use the Roc's as Eagels and the crew as Shadowwariors) and the new Sea Guard Character. Before the new year the also teased the Merewyrm in a interview. I hope it is in the new Arcane journal.
As a 4E hoighty toighty white and pointy player, good to be back and looking forward to the theming armies. With hundreds of models already most releases are useless but but super keen for the new models and some decent transfers! I already wanted a chariot based army so hoping Chracian army leans in there. But the plastic spearmen and archers suck - I’ll keep my 4E. Gimme the merwyrm though!

fellow wood elf enthusiast here, have you noticed the lack of photos of dryads and branchwraiths in the rulebook and forces of fantasy book? I'm hoping it means new models for both with drycha being one of the named characters, do you think that is likely or is there another reason for there being no photos of them in the books?
@@zdthane for some reason I'm confident of a dragon model for wood elves, although I have nothing to base it on, I'm curious as to if the tidbit of lore with the beastman shaman will tie into one of our characters maybe Ariel or Scarloc due to slaying morghur, the speculation on dryads and branchwraiths admittedly is only because of there being no photos of them in the books which I find weird

I feel as if this game needs a take and hold style mission in order to make infantry relevant again. Having big blocks of cheap infantry pushing each other off objectives sounds like it might work (in my head.)
ulthuan is split into 8 principalities(technically 9, but nagarythe isn't much of a kingdom anymore) plus avelorn. one of the princes is elected to the position of phoenix king, who then marries the queen of avelorn, and all the other princes swear an oath of allegiance to both the king and the queen but the princes have an almost complete freedom to do what they want within their own realms.
The Spearmen were somewhat usable back when they could fight in 3 ranks, still needed support to actually do anything, still I used 2 blocks of them for my 6th edition Citizen Levy army. Cant wait to make a Lothern SeaGuard army now though. Also i thought they teased Merwyrm? or will this be their Unit in the book but make it yourself?
Something I've noticed: The Ellyrian Reavers do not have a photo in any of the books, when presenting army showcases, and now they have updated models which I believe is a telltale sign for kits to be updated. With that said, I don't see a single photo of Wood Elves forest dragon, and I think we'll get a new one. Also, Beastmen don't show a single Razorgor, so again I believe a new Razorgor model for Beastmen.
I noticed that as well, but wood elves are missing a more obvious unit dryads and a branchwraith no photos of them in either rulebook or forces of fantasy book, and on the GW site dryads and tree men kit are online only purchase
@@jacklyons2088 The one big difference with them as that their models are part of the AOS line, so maybe that's why. Also with High Elves, their is no photo of Island of Blood Griffon rider and no announcement, so maybe in near future a update for that, and if so then I think this theory holds some weight.
Agree with the archers and spears are not holding up great but they do have a charm. Dont agree with your opinion on the silver helms. I think they look great! Very nice plastic sets. I am really tempted to get a high elf army. but I already have dwarfs, and do plan to get the beastmen and maybe woodelves. I don't know. I'll check out some of the woodelf kits and decide. Really tough. The lion chariot and the flying one are sick. Also love the phoenix and dragon, even though the dragon is quite derpy. These old dragons are very unique, in a good way.
I am not a high elf player but all the new character models make me excited for what's to come for wood elves. I am hoping we get new treekin at least and mayyybe a forest dragon. I don't think much else

@jacklyons2088 I think it's a possibility due to Sylvaneth being out of stock for AOS. My guess is that they are gonna modify the AOS kits for dryads, branch wraiths etc
@@Bloodthirstier I hope so, they seem to want the old aesthetic for the tree men over the newer ones in AoS, also the description of Branchwraiths in the rulebook mentions they can choose a great weapon or extra hand weapon, I also think we will get a resin forest dragon with generic lord, what do you think about the bit of lore for the new beast man shaman looking for morghur whod been slain, could it link to a named wood elf character in the arcane journal like scarloc for example? 3 Wood elf characters have slain morghur in the old lore, Ariel, Coedil and Scarloc. Another thing I may be reading too much into
@@jacklyons2088 I am confident we are getting a new plastic forest dragon. A lot of the range doesn't need updating and so I think we are getting a new dragon and a new stag I think. I like the AOS aesthetic so we will see whether they chose to update the treekin etc or stick to the older versions. Either way I am happy if we get a few new models and maybe a new unit model. I cant wait for the arcane journal etc. Hoping for a summer release. I also hope for Scarloc and maybe Gruarth and beastmasters.
@Bloodthirstier I agree on the dragon only I think it will be forge world resin, having spoken to others I'm now doubting we get scarloc but i would say he is the one character I would want, as one of my favourites from the old lore and yes it's been how many editions since wood elves had beastmasters would be great to see them return, what do you think the reason is why we've got mo photos of dryads or branchwraiths that seems weird to me can't shake the feeling they will get new models, although there are other units that could do with being made plastic like wardancers and waywatchers over getting new dryads
Any speculation if there's anything Made to order for the High Elves? I'm hoping for one of the old Marauder sculpts such as Eltharion & Stormwing, or at least one of the old Imrik dragons (I'm happy with either). Maybe Alarielle will be M2O?

I’d be tempted by these models except for two things. One: I’m spending all my time crafting a Dwarf/Empire themed game table featuring tons of low linear obstacles, a system of trenches, air raid shelters and anti-aircraft organ guns and Hellstrom rocket batteries. Two: They’re bloody knife-ear elf’s.
My first ever WFB army back in 2001. Always loved the aesthetics. IoB Seaguard coming back is amazing, because they shit all over the spearmen (spearelf?) models.
I would have loved to see that Chracian Lord on a Lion Chariot. Lion Lord on Lion Chariot is a great model in the game, I love to play it in my Chracian themed army.
Cathay is the perfect way to introduce the missing factions to this time period. Lizardmen, dark elves, skaven, ogre kingdoms and chaos are all active around cathay. They can introduce them. Then come back and bring in kislev, daemons, vampire counts etc.
The Island of Blood Ellyrian Reavers didn't have a standard or musician. Also, some of those poses are "breaking the plane" more than the old versions. Then the Swordmasters have additional options for the command group. They definitely did at least some new sculpting.
The Sea Guard don't look redone to me, though. I have 30 metal (there were NINE different sculpts, not including command!) and 40 plastic, and have worked on them pretty recently.
I just need the Character models, and maybe a skycutter and possibly another dragon. I've got all the others. I'd think of picking up the new reavers cause i love the new sculpts, but I've got soooo many of the old ones already I don't think I can justify adding more of them to the pile of shame.
I am happy for everything oldworld, that releases, but as a lizard men player my self I would love to see them being fully integrated and updated as well.

Yes that would be very nice but it will not come most certainly. GW did some nice repacking of old WH Modelkits but they do not make new ones beside some few Heroes or Transfers. We must predict that the ToW project still have a limited budget because GW want to min-max the investment in ToW and want AoS as their primal Fantasy game. Just look one the awesome new released AoS Vampire Models in comparison
I can't stand the sight of those pencil welding Spearman. The rest of the range is either OK or great in my eyes. The sea guard look very like the IOB ones I based on 25s last yr.
Well pleased. New sea guard character? nah. New Chace Lord character? yes! Handmaiden in metal? yes, replacing the older finecast version as she keeps warping. I like the new addition to the Swordmasters - an alternate command crew, and the additions to the Reavers .. finally a complete command. Delighted the Mage kit is back, the White Lions, Dragon Princes, Sea Guard, lots to nibble away at. Maybe GW will release the metal nobles in the future, those were really nice too.

A single data point, but on a forum (yes, that still exist) I frequent the thread on TOW has been fairly quiet, with only really two regular posters (I am one of those) and a couple of sporadic ones. Since this announcement, I've seen a bunch of new people posting their interest in starting or reviving true High Elf armies, so I do think High Elves are a proper draw for a lot of people. I think we'll see an influx into the game with them that, like you say, won't be matched until Cathay are released.
I don't want to brag, but I was applying transfers while listening to this. Also, the Chracian lord doesn't belong on that base. He obviously belongs in a chariot.
I'm buying everything. Childhood dreams will be achieved

The dragon launching off a rock was actually 2007. It was part of the 7th edition high elf army book release.

I already wanted a chariot based army so hoping Chracian army leans in there. But the plastic spearmen and archers suck - I’ll keep my 4E. Gimme the merwyrm though!

fellow wood elf enthusiast here, have you noticed the lack of photos of dryads and branchwraiths in the rulebook and forces of fantasy book? I'm hoping it means new models for both with drycha being one of the named characters, do you think that is likely or is there another reason for there being no photos of them in the books?
Definitely think its possible. Im holding out hope for a dragon replacement myself. Purely becouse the old one is looking really dated .
@@zdthane for some reason I'm confident of a dragon model for wood elves, although I have nothing to base it on, I'm curious as to if the tidbit of lore with the beastman shaman will tie into one of our characters maybe Ariel or Scarloc due to slaying morghur, the speculation on dryads and branchwraiths admittedly is only because of there being no photos of them in the books which I find weird

Ishaya Vess is based in Silent Isle that is in the old world next to Britonnia - The reavers are definetly new sculpts. Im hoping that means that they get better rules. I dont think they needed new sculpts. The old ones were good as is.
Ive been in it already. But i switched to ogres. But now that my elves are coming i have an urgent need to get my hands on so many of these kits

I feel as if this game needs a take and hold style mission in order to make infantry relevant again. Having big blocks of cheap infantry pushing each other off objectives sounds like it might work (in my head.)
As a lover of all things pointy eared I'm never going to financially recover from this release
The reavers do look updated some, the bows positions for example have changed.
ulthuan is split into 8 principalities(technically 9, but nagarythe isn't much of a kingdom anymore) plus avelorn. one of the princes is elected to the position of phoenix king, who then marries the queen of avelorn, and all the other princes swear an oath of allegiance to both the king and the queen but the princes have an almost complete freedom to do what they want within their own realms.
But how do the High Elves interact with low linear obstacles?
The Spearmen were somewhat usable back when they could fight in 3 ranks, still needed support to actually do anything, still I used 2 blocks of them for my 6th edition Citizen Levy army.
Cant wait to make a Lothern SeaGuard army now though. Also i thought they teased Merwyrm? or will this be their Unit in the book but make it yourself?
Something I've noticed: The Ellyrian Reavers do not have a photo in any of the books, when presenting army showcases, and now they have updated models which I believe is a telltale sign for kits to be updated. With that said, I don't see a single photo of Wood Elves forest dragon, and I think we'll get a new one. Also, Beastmen don't show a single Razorgor, so again I believe a new Razorgor model for Beastmen.
I noticed that as well, but wood elves are missing a more obvious unit dryads and a branchwraith no photos of them in either rulebook or forces of fantasy book, and on the GW site dryads and tree men kit are online only purchase
@@jacklyons2088 The one big difference with them as that their models are part of the AOS line, so maybe that's why. Also with High Elves, their is no photo of Island of Blood Griffon rider and no announcement, so maybe in near future a update for that, and if so then I think this theory holds some weight.

Agree with the archers and spears are not holding up great but they do have a charm. Dont agree with your opinion on the silver helms. I think they look great! Very nice plastic sets. I am really tempted to get a high elf army. but I already have dwarfs, and do plan to get the beastmen and maybe woodelves. I don't know. I'll check out some of the woodelf kits and decide. Really tough. The lion chariot and the flying one are sick. Also love the phoenix and dragon, even though the dragon is quite derpy. These old dragons are very unique, in a good way.
In case nobody noticed. The Swordmasters look to have a different option for the command models now even though they are not captured as a "new kit".
I am not a high elf player but all the new character models make me excited for what's to come for wood elves. I am hoping we get new treekin at least and mayyybe a forest dragon. I don't think much else

@jacklyons2088 I think it's a possibility due to Sylvaneth being out of stock for AOS. My guess is that they are gonna modify the AOS kits for dryads, branch wraiths etc
@@Bloodthirstier I hope so, they seem to want the old aesthetic for the tree men over the newer ones in AoS, also the description of Branchwraiths in the rulebook mentions they can choose a great weapon or extra hand weapon, I also think we will get a resin forest dragon with generic lord, what do you think about the bit of lore for the new beast man shaman looking for morghur whod been slain, could it link to a named wood elf character in the arcane journal like scarloc for example? 3 Wood elf characters have slain morghur in the old lore, Ariel, Coedil and Scarloc. @@jacklyons2088 I am confident we are getting a new plastic forest dragon. A lot of the range doesn't need updating and so I think we are getting a new dragon and a new stag I think. I like the AOS aesthetic so we will see whether they chose to update the treekin etc or stick to the older versions. Either way I am happy if we get a few new models and maybe a new unit model. I cant wait for the arcane journal etc. Hoping for a summer release. I also hope for Scarloc and maybe Gruarth and beastmasters.
@Bloodthirstier I agree on the dragon only I think it will be forge world resin, having spoken to others I'm now doubting we get scarloc but i would say he is the one character I would want, as one of my favourites from the old lore and yes it's been how many editions since wood elves had beastmasters would be great to see them return, what do you think the reason is why we've got mo photos of dryads or branchwraiths that seems weird to me can't shake the feeling they will get new models, although there are other units that could do with being made plastic like wardancers and waywatchers over getting new dryads
Any speculation if there's anything Made to order for the High Elves? I'm hoping for one of the old Marauder sculpts such as Eltharion & Stormwing, or at least one of the old Imrik dragons (I'm happy with either). Maybe Alarielle will be M2O?

The Reavers are retooled and got new command and the Sword Masters got an alternate command group

I’d be tempted by these models except for two things.
One: I’m spending all my time crafting a Dwarf/Empire themed game table featuring tons of low linear obstacles, a system of trenches, air raid shelters and anti-aircraft organ guns and Hellstrom rocket batteries.
Two: They’re bloody knife-ear elf’s.
A handmaiden of the everqeen (general) and 40 Sisters of Avalorn (core unit). A level 4 Arcmage. That would be my start.
The friend who got me into the game collected High Elves! I personally always thought they were super lame lol.
My first ever WFB army back in 2001. Always loved the aesthetics. IoB Seaguard coming back is amazing, because they shit all over the spearmen (spearelf?) models.

I would have loved to see that Chracian Lord on a Lion Chariot. Lion Lord on Lion Chariot is a great model in the game, I love to play it in my Chracian themed army.

Cathay is the perfect way to introduce the missing factions to this time period. Lizardmen, dark elves, skaven, ogre kingdoms and chaos are all active around cathay.
They can introduce them. Then come back and bring in kislev, daemons, vampire counts etc.

The Island of Blood Ellyrian Reavers didn't have a standard or musician. Also, some of those poses are "breaking the plane" more than the old versions. Then the Swordmasters have additional options for the command group. They definitely did at least some new sculpting.
The Sea Guard don't look redone to me, though. I have 30 metal (there were NINE different sculpts, not including command!) and 40 plastic, and have worked on them pretty recently.
I just need the Character models, and maybe a skycutter and possibly another dragon. I've got all the others. I'd think of picking up the new reavers cause i love the new sculpts, but I've got soooo many of the old ones already I don't think I can justify adding more of them to the pile of shame.
I am happy for everything oldworld, that releases, but as a lizard men player my self I would love to see them being fully integrated and updated as well.
Agreed, the spearmen and archers are probably the weakest models. Hopefully they get an update in the future.

Yes that would be very nice but it will not come most certainly. GW did some nice repacking of old WH Modelkits but they do not make new ones beside some few Heroes or Transfers. We must predict that the ToW project still have a limited budget because GW want to min-max the investment in ToW and want AoS as their primal Fantasy game. Just look one the awesome new released AoS Vampire Models in comparison
What do you think about the new Vampire miniatures? They are made for AoS but it looks like they can be used for the Old World.

Guys, great talk but it's obvious the reavers are a new kit. They have different poses than the IoB models, and now include a command group!
Well pleased. New sea guard character? nah. New Chace Lord character? yes! Handmaiden in metal? yes, replacing the older finecast version as she keeps warping.
I like the new addition to the Swordmasters - an alternate command crew, and the additions to the Reavers .. finally a complete command.
Delighted the Mage kit is back, the White Lions, Dragon Princes, Sea Guard, lots to nibble away at. Maybe GW will release the metal nobles in the future, those were really nice too.

A single data point, but on a forum (yes, that still exist) I frequent the thread on TOW has been fairly quiet, with only really two regular posters (I am one of those) and a couple of sporadic ones.
Since this announcement, I've seen a bunch of new people posting their interest in starting or reviving true High Elf armies, so I do think High Elves are a proper draw for a lot of people. I think we'll see an influx into the game with them that, like you say, won't be matched until Cathay are released.
I’m still waiting for Lion Cavalry, they are as big as a horse so it makes sense that someone must have tried to ride one
Rob - you feel like High Elves are iconic because you must have started playing Warhammer in 4th edition for that high elf / goblin starter box…

Also, the Chracian lord doesn't belong on that base. He obviously belongs in a chariot.
