She hasn’t been the mayor very long and a place is only as good as the people that’s in it. Give her a little more time.

I worked with Chief LeRonne Armstrong at Juvenile Hall in the late 90s. He is a good man. However, from what I’ve heard concerning “misconduct”, you cannot allow incidents of the nature of this caliber to be swept under the rug. The new Mayor did the right thing.
They were minor incidents and weren’t swept under the rug they just weren’t presented to the chief.

Oh, wait, are you referring to the Sergeant involved in two separate incidents?? Well, crashing an OakPD cruiser without stopping to render aid or firing his service weapon within the confines of OakPD’s administrative building doesn’t seem like “minor incidents” to me, as you put it! 🤔
@@battleaxe. Both of them were minor, nobody was hurt and the incidents were documented and the officer was held accountable. The minor car accident was on a parked car with nobody in it, ergo no need to stop and render aid to non existent people. This is besides the point, the chief was fired for saying things the mayor did not like, as she stated.

If it is so great why is crime so high and over here it is bad enough small businesses are still leaving and closing. Because of our mayor here in San Francisco and the mayor in Oakland are telling the same story and nothing is getting done I think we need to vote for better people and get things like crime and drugs and homelessness cleaned up and taken care of.

@Michael Beary The problem is probably cultural, that isn't going to be changed by the Chief alone, it needs a overhaul of the whole system. On the other Hand the Mayor has to make sure she has a Chief she can believe in and a Chief that believes in the mayor. These are some of the most important positions and they have to be totally in sync, for things to work the most effectively.

Tell us what kind of crimes. I don’t want to speculate. Prostitution and drugs are the two common things I noticed at night when I was in Oakland a few years ago. I’ve had my bag and wallet stolen from 24 Hours Fitness’s locker room in downtown once. They didn’t check who goes in and out thoroughly at the front desk.

I saw this coming a long time ago. You can't keep the same people around and expect the future to change so they must go. Plus all the things he did can't be swept under the run especially if you are here for change. The optics would be bad so see ya. It's about time and it takes strength to do this cause nobody likes to go up against police even bad incompetent police. Most politicians just talk the talk but Sheng Thao walk the talk. As she said he can't just dismissed these as just mistakes. I do not envy her job of trying to make Oakland better. It is going to be a uphill battle for anybody and no small task for sure. Going after these powerful and connected law enforcement personnel is no easy task as they have deep ties and political sway. She is taking on a lot but I am so happy she didn't let that stop doing what needed to be done despite the risks to her own pollical career. The city has been left to decay for way too long and it's going to take a long time to turn it around. Good luck to Mayor Sheng I wish you the best and the people of Oakland.
It might cost her significantly in the long run, like, for example, re-election and a lawsuit. If Armstrong can prove he was screwed out of a job, it will look bad on the mayor. She should have the council member be part of the vote of firing him just in case she needs to cover her ass.
And nothing will get better one way or another.

You should have fired everyone behind you because they was there also. Who was his 2nd in command where was he or she they are the ones who should have been tasked or stepped up to handle the discipline actions. Patrol officers vehicle accidents do happen all the time, but you have to look at how many driving hours they have this maybe only .00099% accident level. He said something you thought was not responsible, you have stood up as the mayor and said right there "wrong answer chief I will speak with you later." that call standing up to someone. What are you going to do when a really bad complaint come in. Not down talking you but this is not Administration or Human Resources these are real problems with more to come. Bad decision who ever you legal advisor or mentor is bad decision. Trust me the Temp chief behind you will have disagreements with you don't be soft skinned. Police Officers are rough and can be direct because that's how they enforce Laws.

It sounds like the problem is in the department, so hire another chief outside which have experience in a larger city they could be a assistant chief from outside if you want changes.
This was an experienced chief from outside. He disputed everything she accused him of. She apparently didn’t do her homework to see if he did do anything about the things she accused him of. He had the paperwork to prove her wrong.
When you hire a mayor with no experience . Your going to get someone who doesn’t know how things are done. She should have investigated thoroughly what she was accusing him of. Maybe she would have seen that he did take action on the things she claims he did nothing about.
