The mushroom with stars around it is a checkpoint, you'll start from there if you die in a level. It also doubles as a mushroom powerup if you're small.

That's why there was no section where you find 2 hidden blocks to climb on to progress, because it's not actually that level. However, that level from Lost Levels you were thinking of is very similar so I get why you thought it was the Lost Levels level.
I think I beat this before I beat the OG 3 games. There is so much new content and quick tip: you have to find the alternate exit in the ghost house to open the other levels.
