What Is Durban?
Durban is the third most populous city in South Africa after Johannesburg and Cape Town and the largest city in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal. Durban forms part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, which includes neighboring towns and has a population of about 3.44 million, making the combined municipality one of the largest cities on the Indian Ocean coast of the African continent. Durban was one of the host cities of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Sub Continent cooking has NOTHING on a proper South African mutton curry, for those who dont agree...I invite you to come and try our cuisine..this is NOT, i repeat its NOT a Durban mutton curry this is an Indian version of a Durban Classic....close but no cigar!!!!
Few things that would improve this recipe as it is not true to a Natal (Durban) curry:
1. Use brown onion and at least 2 cleaned and chopped
2. Use roma tomatoes
3.Peel your potatoes
4. Add curry leaves and some green chillies towards the end.
5. Simmer at the end
Share your recipe please
It was simmering, the lid has a simmering hole to allow for the water to escape and thicken the sauce, I think it she let it go longer it would have continued to reduce and get thicker.
Onions are burnt and nobody wants skin on potatoes in a curry
No..Durban curry is UNIQUE. Sub continental spices and methods are very different from ours. Our curries are rich, hot and kicking with flavour. Check out our local recipes and do the comparison.
Why u always over burnt onions??
Thakyu for show this recipie masta
I tried this recipe and it was just mind blowing. One of the best mutton curries I have ever made
Looks divine but tell me please by putting the Chilli powder and other spices after meat does that not leave a raw taste of masala.
Soo proud that you showcased the favourite dish of our Indian community in South Africa and my hometown of Durban 🇿🇦
I follow you on tiktok, love your videos!
Mouth watering recepie thank you mam
Best believe, this will be on a plate asap.
Being a durbanite myself, you sure have the knack of a good curry.
Well done
Looks delicious just like a typical jummy Durban curry would like
What I pity I live 6,000 miles away from Durban, but luckily Durban curry mix is available in the UK and I can make one when I wish . I do miss sitting on the marina with a bunny chow tho
Burned the onions.
I'm from Durban and this looks yummy. goes well with Rice or even sliced bread
Ooo you make me homesick for a Smith st bunny chow. Greetings from the Netherlands
Home dick too. Have to perfect this haha. Found that lamb rogan josh is closest takeaway but without potato
Yum…from UK …lived in Durbs

A Port Elizabeth curry beats a Durban curry hands down, those Durbanites are scared of heat
Superb, i always like yours and Varun recipe.
Love it!👻🍭🎃👻🍭🎃👻🍭🎃👻🍭🎃
Whilst I love ur recipes ...
I fail to understand..how is this different from any random mutton curry!
Really quizzed
Curries from Durban are much different from curries from India due to Ingredients, wealth etc. Perhaps it's not depicted here but as someone who is from Durban I must say our curries are far less extravagant. We don't use any curd or coconut cream etc.
Our onions and tomatoes are very rustic, they are NOT pureed or have cream or yoghurt in it...the onions, whole spices, curry leaves, chopped tomatoes and masala are all sauteed together before adding the meat or chicken and half way through the cooking process once meat is 3 quarter cooked, quartered potatoes are added in..but you can also steam the potatoes to shorten the cooking time and then add it to the meat.
We don’t make our curry as a ‘sauce’ by putting the ingredients into a blender nor do we use coconut milk. Our curry is a work of art ♥️🥰
Perhaps the chef didn't do the right steps. Other than the curry leaves, this is basically a bihari style mutton.
Lovely recipe 👌🏻 Greetings from Scotland 😊 Have a wonderful day everyone 🌻
Wow so exciting! I'm from Durban, South Africa and so glad you attempted to try out our Durban Mutton Curry, that looks delicious ...the curries in Durban is intensely red and fiery hot with the usage of Kashmiri chillie powder and paprika which gives that RED colour to gravy...the blending of spices and masala/curry mix varies from each household. But this looks so yummy!😝😝👍👍👍

Hmm interesting flavour profile, have to try this! 👍
This is the second time I am making this Durban Mutton Curry, and it is delicious and the family can't get enough. Thank you for sharing this really special recipe. I love it!
Been using this recipe now for a while and yet again I am blown away with the flavor. Thanks again for sharing this amazing recipe. I can't get enough of this Mutton Curry. Just finished making another pot :D
Nice recipe however...we love heat, our use of spices is a bit different from yours, nothing beats an authentic Durban curry, we just have our own way thats evolved down the generations. Curry might have been invented in India however...it is perfected in Durban.
Do share your recipe Randy. For all of us expats who are longing for that taste we grew up with! :-)

Looks very scrumptious...thanks for sharing 👏👏
I tried out this recipe...but there's one problem...Too much water...the curry became very watery...How much less water can I use for this recipe so as to make it thicker?
500 ml for 750gms mutton or less?
😀
looks great. Why Mutton not Lamb?
This is brass or bronze uruli used for cooking?
I sure do miss a good ol Durbs mutton curry - yum
My home city Durban, South Africa's play ground!
Can you make a delicious beef curry
Hi do u have a what's app cooking group?
Hi, my wife has tried your recipe..it turned out extremely good. Thanks. Only one tip needed is how to mutton meat xtremly soft??
Use a pressure cooker.. or marinate the meat with raw papaya paste 1 hour prior
Simple but delicious 😋
What pot are you using
Im drooling🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
excellent video
I was taking a walk with my son wondering what to cook my husband that is proudly African and Durban curry came to mind. Can't wait for him to try it. Will have to use chicken since he's not big on lamb.
Don’t u add salt
Tomatoes kill original taste of basic item. Don't use it, never use potatoes with non veg it spoils the dish.
I really do like your solid brass cooking pot. Where may I purchase one?
Great video Smita. Love from South Africa 🇿🇦❤️
What could I use if I don't have curry leaves I live in germany 🤔 😕
Looks Yummy and Delicious 😋😋💐💐💐
Mutton curry recipe is delicious
Who non-vegetarian here yummy 🔥🔥🤤🤤🤤
Great recipe ma'am 👍 Do you use home made or store bought garam masala? If it's home made, could you please share the recipe? 🙏
I'm a Kapie, but love Durban curry ❤
Can you please share where you've sourced the vessel from? The one in which you have cooked in this video. Have seen it many times in your videos, it is awesome!
This vessel is available in kerala..(its name is uruli) We keralites use this vessel for cooking non veg and also other items like payasam.
@@sree5920 Can one get it in Mumbai and where
@@ashishshirke9102 plz enquire in keralites vessel stores in mumbai or else you can purchase this brass URULI in amazon...also check out that sizes vary from small to big.
@@sree5920but is it safe to cook citric stuff in brass? As tomatoes are used in this recipe..
There is nothing new about this recipe. It's the usual mutton curry with a different name. Instead of slow cooking for 45 min, use a pressure cooker n take 8 whistle.
It is actually very different. I'm from Durban and our curries are not the same as curries from India. Although you won't be able to tell the difference from this video as we don't make curries like this. For one we don't brown our onions nor do we use red onions and we use masalas like Kashmiri. Bay leaf is also missing along with a few other ingredients.
Sis i love yr all types u cook mutton😊
Oh i like this so much sis its not a gravy.thank u ssss much.
Hi, can we cook this recipe in pressure cooker?
Looking very tasty
luv this aunty very pretty 😘😘
I don’t have to try it to know it’s tasty. The look of it and what is used to cook it means the food is delicious.
Delicious, thanks !🌷❤🌷
