    This is a clean example of the second-generation "R56" MINI Cooper S "JCW GP." The John Cooper Works GP is a special edition of MINI's fastest three-door, with extra power, stiffer suspension, rear-seat delete, unique wheels and aero, and exclusively a manual transmission. For a fan of the marque, this is the ultimate MINI, though in my review of the stock car, I remarked it had "The performance of the Fiesta ST for the price of a BMW 335i."
    This example has been modified with a host of bolt-on engine modifications, full suspension upgrade with TC Kline coilovers and associated parts, TC Kline wheels, and upgraded brake lines, pads, and fluids. The aftermarket is limited for MINI's in general, and the JCW Most of all, so to see a modified GP is very rare.

      Yeah as much as I dislike these cars because I see to many of them and they don't make sense to me, I can't hate on the fact that they are fun. If they weren't fun then people wouldn't be enjoying them so much. Personally I can never get myself to like them because they are overpriced and I can get sick RWD cars for the money, possibly an AMG, it can lift off oversteer but it doesn't drift, some of them don't let you turn on the ESP and the system won't let you give it throttle while steering (probably not hard to bypass though), it's complete shit on the autobahn and I just don't like the looks and the interior (except the shifter and wheel). Looks and interior never stopped me from liking a car though.

    I work at a mini dealer, r56 engine is known to have issues after 50k miles. We replace lots of engines. That aside, mini owners are people with money and can pay to play. They are ridiculously fun cars for their intended purpose, canyons and tight roads are amazing. They are special cars as far as options too, there really isn't another car like this you can customize so much. I see off road road oriented countryman with rally lights of them that people take to the logging roads, I see tracked minis that people race at thunder hill. These cars are really awesome if you can afford it. I don't have one btw, I would lease one for sure though.

      Minis are rather portly for their small size; they look ~500 lbs lighter than they usually are.
      I dunno, seems that the sure-fire mod is to remove excess 'go-slower' weight like the back seats, noise baffling, install a smaller battery etc before touching any mechanical internals.

    • @ChristopherWoods
      @ChristopherWoods 6 лет назад +1

      shaft9000 true there's weight savings to be had, but having had a passenger ride in a MY17 JCW, I was very impressed. My daily drive is a Fiesta ST for comparison and the mini holds its own very well. What it might lack in weight saving, it makes up for with a very nice interior - way better than my own Fiesta. I'd buy one if I weren't so happy with my pocket rocket!

    • @markyb3575
      @markyb3575 4 года назад

      @@francogroppi406 The best years for R53 are 05-06 for two main reasons, optional LSD and better geared transmissions. Also, the xenons are much more stylish, but those can easily be swapped to an older model as I did with my 03 JCW. I would opt for the JCW IF you can find one, even if it's an 03 or 04, but they're fairly rare. I would look for one without a sunroof if you care about performance/handling. It's about 75 lbs up above you where you don't want it for driving dynamics sake. Lastly, as with all cars, low km and well maintained with service records is key.

    • @UnlinealHand
      @UnlinealHand 6 лет назад +6

      That "massive bonnet scoop" is half blocked off from the factory anyway, and the intake sits behind the engine about 1.5 feet back from where the scoop is. I've had that intake on my Mini, it's fine once you're moving and makes a whole bunch of noise which is fun, but once you get below 20 MPH or sit for about 30 seconds, the intake temps spike up to 100F faster than a thermometer in boiling water. The AEM intake is a much better kit for the money as it has a attachment on the hood that funnels air into the airbox from the hood scoop. Or you could just use the stock airbox which has a cold air feed from the grille anyway. The NM intake in the video is just an open filter sitting between the valve cover and the intake manifold.

    • @SI0AX
      @SI0AX 6 лет назад +7

      For a turbo-charged car, hell even supercharged... -basically anything with an intercooler negates the "hot air intake" setup anyway. The intercooler does like 99.9% of the cooling job as the air is going to get hot anyway from the compression of air, so you could run with no intake at all, just having the turbo suck in air unfiltered and it would make no noticeable performance difference if it's running an intercooler or even with no intercooler, but with a water/methanol injection kit.
      Non-forced induction cars are usually the ones that benefit from long intake tubes to suck in air from a cold place. But for a turbo car, it's pointless and you just add a hydro-locking risk for virtually no reward.

      Supercharger. It's the previous generation of Mini's that are all supercharged.

    I think Mini marketed the 2013-15 Mini Cooper Coupe John Cooper Works is the fastest, no?
    I miss old Matt, new Matt seems car jaded now (understandably so) with all the cars he has driven.

      Macht Schnell not really, big brand tires only come to shine on high end tires (pilot super sport, cup 2, Pirelli trofeo R) that cost 4 times a Sumitomo tire of course I expect them to be better, read some reviews about it, I’m not making it up some people even comparethe Sumitomos to the “mighty” pilot super sport, beat the Hankook V12, i personally use them and track them, and can assure for what they cost they are an outstanding tire.

    • @ThePrinceOfSanDiego
      @ThePrinceOfSanDiego 6 лет назад +1

      Macht Schnell a good set of summer sumitomos will wash 90% of Major Brand tires at damn near half the price. I love my Pilots and Trofeos etc but don't hate on a brand you obviously never used or tried. Quality tire.

    Little off on how much power you can squeeze out of them , software will take his car to 300hp , turbo up grade can easily go to 400whp although upgraded internals will be needed. Heck there are a few r53's busting 400whp. As always enjoy all you vids

    God I miss my r53 S the supercharger whine was soo good. They definitely fall apart after 100k though, shame as you’ll be pressed to find a low mileage now

  • @mattportnoyTLV

    09 R56 JCW here. I bought it 3 years ago with 56k miles. 17k miles later I’ve spent almost 60% of the purchase price on maintenance. I’ve also got a ‘13 BMW 135i. It’s faster and much more refined. The Mini is pretty much a rich guy’s cheap car.

    I have an 04 mini s with the jcw kit 120k miles driven hard. Only thing it's needed is clutch so much for unreliable. Also I've taken some impressive cars on the track with it . Biggest issue is the lack of LSD. I sadly didn't have the money to do the LSD when I did my clutch.
