Apple snuck out a meaty new update to GarageBand for Mac yesterday, featuring literally thousands of new loops, hundreds of new instruments and dozens of new drum kits.
As if that wasn’t enough, they’ve also added a few new features - one of which I can almost guarantee will completely change the way you use GarageBand...

Also with the Garage Band update for IOS, there was over 60 improvements with Voiceover, which is the screen reader built into Apple devices, which is what blind and visually impaired users use to interact with whatever Apple device he or she has. As someone who is blind, this is really cool from my point of view.

Hi Patrick, great content as always! My Garageband disconnected from my Soundcloud account with this new update & now when I try to re-connect it, after I hit "share" it brings up the Soundcloud login screen, then when I log in, it just says "redirecting" and never connects. Any ideas how to fix this?

Yes the producer packs on the iOS version are now on Mac. Although they’ve changed a few maps on the Chinese Percussion kit so I’ve had to change existing recorded MIDI for the kit, and I’m also having a problem where drum instruments either completely drop out or suddenly become very quiet
This update has killed me because ever since then ive had AT LEAST 5 projects crash and become corrupted.

I’m using a 2017 MacBook Air, and I can’t find anything saying if it was or was not supported yet. I have a lot of recordings I’ve done with SD3, so I’m still slightly weary about updating just yet.

Hey I’ve been having with third party plugins. I have the Howard benson vocals plug-in and last night I started getting an error message saying I needed an updated version or I needed to update my license software. I did everything but I still can’t use my plug in. Any way you could help?

So...I need to check this out when I get home. I downloaded it but haven't opened it yet. Did the guitar players get more amps? More effects? Just curious. Nice overview but I really only use it as a guitar player and it's basically a modern version of a 4-track recorder for me. If there are new drummers, that's also exciting.

My problem is that Garageband never supplies any loops in 3/4, or 6/8 time. There is a lot more to music than just 4/4 time.

I cant use the AU sampler and my plugins after updating to this new version.They open up but there's no more graphical display for plugins and for AU sampler I can’t load in my own sounds. If anyone knows a solution let me know. Thank You.
Do you need to upgrade to Big Sur to get these? I'm still on Catalina and see no update. I still have 10.3.5 as the latest.
Yes Big Sur has been required since v. 10.4
Let me know whenever it occurs to GB to have a master channel with at least rudimentary means of final mix mastering. It's the only DAW in existence which lacks that. I have the basic iPad and Reaper on my Windows hi-end gaming laptop is my main DAW, but if I use GB, I old-school bounce the results via RCA cables (lol, but it works, and my stuff is 1 and 1/2- chord punk/garage rock which sounds best with minimal processing anyway, so all good) from one interface to the other, then I use the fave plugins I have there, my Ferox tape, my Voxengo Elephant master limiter, and usually Reaper's saturator, and a master channel strip which I can't remember the name of, "Over"-something, I think. I only see it twice or more a week for over 5 years now. Oh, my aching 61-year-old, decomposing brain...
Seriously this is a massive, lazy oversight. If they had this, it would be really worthwhile to build projects in GarageBand.

Is there a lot of difference between GarageBand (Mac) and Logic (Mac).
As a Logic Pro user for over the last 10 years, I was surprised to see how much the new GarageBand looks/uses like Logic Pro
Bizarrely, GarageBand actually got the new design first.
When did the update for mac actually occur? Mine looks like it's up to date, but I don't know how to check if I have all the packs :)
The update came out on the 19th I believe. If you click on GarageBand in the toolbar at the top of the screen and then click about, you’ll be able to see what version you’re on (this update is 10.4.4).
If you want to download all of the sounds available to you in one go, again click GarageBand in the toolbar, hover your cursor over sound library and select download all available sounds.

I would say backup your computer on an external drive

No not at all. They updated their own audio units in the latest update, but I’m pretty sure they didn’t remove any?

my friend sent me a file from his GarageBand through email, but when I try to open it on mine, it says I need to update GarageBand. Then I try to update in system preferences or through App Store, And no update required! It just says "open"! WTH??? I have a Mac book pro 2020. my system software is updated as well!

What steps have you taken so far? Its usually just plug & play. Are you saying your computer is not seeing the interface or are you getting no sound?

10.4.6 was released a few days ago. Nothing major though, mostly bug fixes 🤷♂️

Personally, I’m not really waiting for yet another bag of samples and loops, but I get the value it brings for many artists. I’ve since jumped into Logic and am pleased that iOS and macOS versions start to feel more and more like a real family. I’m using Ableton a lot less lately… but on the iPad Cubasis still has a decent pair of control and sounds. There are no bad DAWs these days.

10.4.2 pre-installed on my latest MacBook pro but I guess licensing prevents upgrade. The update buttons grayed out.
Licensing prevents upgrade? How do you mean?
@@TheGaragebandGuide you can't hover over the library or updates. It is grayed out (like non functional) . I remember a few months ago there was some sort of instruments upgrade as well and there was a problem because the licensing was for a specific setup on this laptop.
You’d need to update via the Mac App Store, not from inside GarageBand itself. Open the Mac App Store, search for GarageBand and you should see the update button on its store page.
If your Mac can run 10.4.2, then it can run this version too.
@@TheGaragebandGuide I tried that but same message appears. "Garage Band cannot be updated because it was refunded or purchased with a different Apple ID.' (strange, I bought this machine new from Apple Store and Garage Band was pre installed.)
I was considering getting an M1 MacBook Air but I decided to stick to my iPad Pro because of the regular updates. AAAAAAAND now I'm gonna get a MacBook 😭

Why I can't update my Garageband (10.4.3)?
Why can’t you update you mean? If you’re not seeing the update, search for GarageBand in the Mac App Store and you should see the update button where the get button usually is.

Try opening the Mac App Store and manually searching for GarageBand. You should see the update button on its store page 👍

Why oh why does GarageBand 10.4.4 require Big Sur? My Mac can only be upgraded to Catalina. I mean, sure, I'm planning on getting a new Mac next year but I would have loved to have gotten the latest GarageBand. I guess I'm just going to have to suck it up with GarageBand 10.3.5 until I get my new Mac.
Everything after 10.3.5 has required Big Sur. It definitely sucks,
YET AGAIN NOT FOR ME!!! Only for Big Sur or later, my machine itself is late 2012 and happily running Mojave, so I'm not impressed with Apple one bit, I guess people like me are penalised for not spending more money on yet more machines when the one I have works fine. Yet they're happy for the old machine user to BUY apps for this sad old machine, but free Garageband updates are off the table. Thanks a bunch Apple, is there any point in me watching these videos if they're just about things I can't get? Anyone else in this boat or is it just me???

@@TheGaragebandGuide And THAT'S a big flaw in GB. None are truly useful in their "stock" iterations without performing major edits. Guess I'll still have to dig out my Alesis Compact Kit 7 and DIY drums. Have you done any tutorials on using Steven Slate Drums in GB?

I found a slight annoying feature of GarageBand using it on my imac----it doesn't actually work without an internet connection----so when I'm cut off from my social media on my HP pc I can't do work in garageband---another good reason to never buy apple again ! I had to force quit garageband just to shut down my imac---to force quit a program that never actually opened---kudos to apple genius here---real marketing savvy that ! Goodbye apple !
