Tesla Ripped off the Previous Owner of my $7800 Model S and Offered ME $7500 to buy it Back!

- This is not a good look Tesla. I love the cars but you have to do better! Tesla service lied about the cost to repair some issues, and the owner traded this in on a brand new Model S AFTER spending $12,000 to fix this car!!!

Tesla will resell that battery pack and scrap the car that’s why they can splurge to buy it back
Nope. Tesla resold the car to me at auction. If they were going to scrap it they would have when he traded it in.
It would have never went to auction if so
Bingo.
@@AutoAuctionRebuilds Tesla is in big trouble now they lost 25% or even up to 40% of their sale value on new cars. No company can sustain such losses. But offcourse Tesla is nothing more than a tool of the USA government to controll a certain narrative.
Oh boy here comes the conspiracy theorist 😂 Elon has more money than you could ever begin to imagine in your wildest of dreams. Tesla is not going anywhere. And if anything Elon is against government and for the people that’s why he bought Twitter. Don’t spread your conspiracy theories on my page I don’t subscribe to your bullshit.
Keeping the older Tesla and not paying out for a new one is one of the best decisions you could of made, what the car cost you and what it has had replaced already makes it a wise move to keep it .
I like your perspective on the older Tesla feeling more like a car than a brand new one.
Couldn't agree more, I have a model 3 and I'd love to disable all the nags and beeps, and just be able to be quick and maintain a set speed where required, don't need all the autopilot and other driver "assistance" features.
Randy you're the best storyteller I have ever heard. You speak from the heart no bullshit. I have learned so much from this Tesla experience. Keep up the good work!!
Thank you so much.
I agree, even videos he just talks like this one are entertaining
Except for the actual mileage and the whole repair history thing, no BS.
I bet Rich Rebuilds could unlock that full battery for you.
the buffer value is already there, to prolong the battery health xd
Being a car guy it's neat when you find the previous owners and get thier story. With the condition of that car and the mileage you know someone cared for it. Same reason I took my time looking for months and just splurged on a 2014 535ix, one owner that still looks and smells new, plus has both key fobs. I've always been a Chevy, Ford, Jeep and Toyota owner but wanted something totally different but held out for the right luxury car that was taken care of it's whole life before me.
Not an ‘umm’ or an ‘ah’ just a well spoken and enthusiastic story of his experience! Infectious! Credit to you fella, you’re talented 👍
Car dealerships will do this…they will “try” to fix your car and all of its problems, meanwhile a guy in their sales department is sending you emails asking if you want to sell your car.
That’s what happened with me and my Ford Focus RS. There were so many issues that were instigated by one of their lesser technicians. Took me over a year to diagnose all the problems myself, but finally got it back to perfect working condition. That’s the extent you’ll go to when you love a car.
I like this idea of keeping this and fixing things up. Tesla owners are probably leary about working on anything and you may save people some money by watching you work on your own.
Actually Tesla has made working on your own car pretty easy. Service mode allows you to easily pair a new battery to the car both HV and LV battery which are both lithium. They also allow you to control basically everything on the CAN bus and the Ethernet Bus. Some modders have even been able to implement drift mode using an Arduino.
Or you can just buy the S3XY buttons, probably the most impressive soft-mod kit ever made.
You can change the drive motor bias on the fly, disable traction control, burnout mode with MAX regen on front motor and max torque on rear. Also custom rear sceens for older Teslas, and the ability to turn the lumbar support into a back massage (more like back rubber)
That isn't even getting in to aftermarket suspension, breaks, wheels, aero. Look up Dark-helmet, that is a track car...
@@Flutter9i6Awesome info, I'd like more if you can offer! We're hacking cars here in Austin.
Your blower switch mod reminds me of what I did on an old Ford truck. The wiring harness fried, so I added switches to control the turn signals, and ran a new line back to the brake lights. It was all cobbled together. 😂
Nice!!
If it works it works. I'm only a teenager and I've done stuff like that to random electronics I own that fail and at the end it works
Also remember he did have free supercharging for life, but when you trade them in Tesla will make you an offer and give you discounted supercharging or free supercharging on the new car for a period of time and then they turn off the free supercharging on the old car from what I understand.
Makes me think that Tesla sales employees get a large commission by getting a old Tesla off the road that has free supercharging (Tesla hates free super charging), getting that turned off, and getting that person into a brand new Tesla versus just somebody coming in for a new Tesla. every Tesla that they get off the road that has free supercharging is a win/goal for Tesla
In Q4 2023 Tesla offered to transfer UFSC from an old Tesla if you bought a new one. Didn't even have to trade in the old one.
Moral of the story: be sure to check for UFSC if buying an old Tesla.
Tesla sales people don’t get commission
We’ve got free lifetime supercharging on both our Teslas. Only use it when traveling but def a nice perk.
I actually tried to offer to give up the free charging on mine - I only use it once or twice a year, and I didn't want Tesla to have any incentive to try to take it off the road. They said that the charging/power was completely separate, so they weren't interested or couldn't do it.
Good morning Randy. The 2013 Tesla Model S P85. Finding out the modes of the problems from putting the car in service mode.
Good morning
That's a beautiful old Model S! You have a real gem there, don't ever trade it back in to Tesla! Most of it is as repairable as any other car, and Rock Auto carries more and more parts for it every day. They even have heater blower motors from your choice of three manufacturers AND a 'Blower Motor Control Module / Resistor' which might be exactly what you need. It's only $22!
BTW, The EPAS error is because you have no auto-pilot. 'DAS' is 'driver assistance system', and it sounds like you don't really want that anyways (I agree!) Some KFC would be tasty, though! :)
And I am SO jealous of that new battery!
I have a Model S from 2016 and had the opportunity to sell it for a new Tesla but i kept it. It still is driving like i got it 7 years ago. Keep the 2013 Model S. They don't make them like this anymore 😎👍
Well I just got back from Tesla and it was a 14 hour ordeal. Video soon…
@@AutoAuctionRebuildsThat really doesn't sound like fun 😮😮😮😢😢😢😢
It was horrible.
@@AutoAuctionRebuilds I will subscribe and I can't wait to see the new Tesla video
I am contemplating getting an older tesla just for the mileage deduction as well. 2024 new mileage deduction is up to $.67/mile. Even better than what you expected!.
Because of the buffer this car's battery will probably last twice the time the former battery has lasted.
Bingo
It will also go for quite a while below 0 SoC due to that large buffer.
newer battery chemistry too
@@empedance1933 any information about that? Would love to hear about that in Randy’s show. Thank you in advance.
@@FransvandenBergeMuziekschuur I think it's still nca instead of LFP but since it's a newer manufacture date and the fact that they stopped making the 85wh batteries would lead me to believe that haha
You became my favorite car RUclipsr. Good work men..
Appreciate that
I just bought a Model 3 four months ago. I don't know why I'm jealous of your 2013 Model S. :) I agree with you. I also feel that this Model S will take care of you for a long time. Great vlog. Thank you, sir.
Best car purchase yet. I wouldn't buy a new one when this one has a new battery and motor for $7,800. Makes me question the logic of those expensive new trucks you keep buying!
As I’ve explained a thousand times - TAXES TAXES TAXES TAXES.
I wonder if the original owner had taken the car to a compentent 3-rd party shop they could have diagnosed and fixed the front suspension issue reasonably? The PTC heater would have been a drag however. You found/lucked into an amazing deal.
For the swaybar links (or anti-roll bar drop links as we say over here) you could probably DIY it, it's only a 20-30 min job per side (jack car up, remove wheel, remove the nuts on each end of the droplink, take out old droplink, put new one in, torque nuts to spec, replace wheel, lower car, job done!)
I'm hooked on this series so far. Great content!
Good vid and great pushback on the negatives floating around on tesla's.
Thanks! 👍
The 2013 model actually had an unlimited mile warranty on the battery and the drive motor.
I love how he talks about not being a parts cannon and then immediately says ehh let’s replace this computer deep in the dash it might work
In my opinion, what makes keeping this Tesla a smart move is that you can enjoy it for a while, take care of the maintenance/small breakdowns it has yourself (generating content and money for the channel), and when it breaks down "serious" to sell it in copart or similar without losing too much money since most of the depreciation has already been borne by its previous owner...
You know that one of the most expensive problems, which is the battery, is practically new, and for the rest you can surely fix things yourself, while as you say, if you buy a new Tesla, apart from having a lot of electronic toys that They take away your driving experience - and they can be prone to failure generating more expenses - you will have to deal with an extra cost in interest from a possible loan in addition to the initial depreciation, which is much higher in a new vehicle...
I can’t argue with any of your points. Well said
This is why I say delayed EV adoption is just a math problem. Until people realize what you just said 24:03 (260 miles = $10), only those who get this math will try EVs.
Yeah alot of people in service lie to make money
This video and its prior counterpart is starting to convince me to upgrade to one of these from my 2015 Leaf at some point
The error code active aero just is correlated to the radiator flaps, dont worry about it
Loving the story time! Especially from original owner to you and pricing everything in between
Unlimited for eight years*!
Tesla has no problem offering you $1000 more than you paid because they're making $30,000 on the new Tesla you're buying.
....and Ford announced they're *losing* $36,000 on each EV they build 😳
No, theirs not $30k make up in anything,, except furniture
@user-ce9wg1zx4q You've never worked in the RV business then, I can personally vouch that dodge makes on average, roughly 8-9k a car, that's without any of the extras (like extended warranty and rim and tire protection).
Also, most of those dealerships can hide what they pay you in the paperwork. They will make it look like your giving you a number, and in reality they're giving you half.
I hope you’re not speaking on dealers making $8-9k per unit? They only make that on you. You need to learn how to negotiate @@nhehlers4265
@@nhehlers4265 try googling how much did Ford lose on each lighting. Hint: you are wrong.
I’ve been watching your videos since the Uber days. Great series of videos on Tesla cars that are definitely worth buying used.
A great video RandyI,m not surprised by the antics of Tesla looks like they got more than their pound of flesh from the previous owner. Keep the great video,s coming.
I think the style of the car looks better than the newer ones
Being at one with the car really hits home. I have two older manual transmission cars in the garage and drive them with a smile on my face every time. Meanwhile, I needed to replace a 2008 sedan that is our big and 'practical' car and by chance a friend's dad was giving up his 2020 E450 wagon lease. Had to buy it. But oh my gosh all the electronics and high-tech is insane. First order of business when the title comes through is to turn off every nanny feature possible. Time will tell if I feel engaged with the car or that it's just over the top.
"A parts cannon is not the proper solution..."
Proceeds to aim the parts cannon based on one broad error code.
I jest and am really enjoying the series! I hope the parts cannon works for you this time. 😀
Lol. But he did explain why on a tesla you cant diagnose it electronically
@@lilrob19944 And it didn't help when he showed it.
The sum of it's parts is > than buying the whole car.
Bingo
My 2012 MS85 had its battery replaced 2nd time due to main contactor failure (cells were fine both times). 3rd battery was the same "90kwh" that you got (as per sticker visible in passenger wheel well). Also on sticker is "350 volts" instead of 400v. Car is on 2nd motor and currently has 110k miles.
I'm rocking one of the new Mustang Mach E's and I love it from a charging stand point... you'll also love the fact that you can let it sit and charge and then warm up with departure times so it can sit in a closed garage and be warmed up or cooled when you're ready to get in it. I'm not sure we'll ever go back to only owning ICE vehicles.
The transmission type torque transfer unit gets the oil and filter change every 100k miles.
Randy you're the man the right thing to do is to keep this car I enjoy it
Just subscribed, great video. Looking forward to ongoing videos as you complete yhe upgrades. 🙂
😲 That's so shady!
Randy, you got the hookup on this tesla!
For sure 👍
Beautiful - nowadays unique - silver color, not available anymore.
Request. Can the Toyota and that little japanese car be improved with better springs and maybe isolation underneath the carpet, to drop noise level. Are there aftermarket products to improve the ride quality on a long drive?
Having this Tesla model car is the equivalent of owning an iPhone 6 plus with 64gb, it’s still usable as vintage and cost less to operate 😆 That’s great on the battery and motor being replaced, Randy!💯
Hey if it works, it works! Don’t toss it out if it’s lasted you this long! ☺️ You can always jailbreak those to run the latest apps. May not be the fastest phone, but if it gets the job done, who cares!
I saw your video with Mike and the road trip yesterday. That led to seeking out this video .
This video led to me subscribing. Keep up the good work.
Hey Ho~! This writer understands the 'real car feel' you have with the old Tesla. And he has circa 05 decades of driving to his log books. Hence, my EV is the 2019 NIRO BEV which retains the feeling of control of the car with its environment. And yes, you made the correct choice to stay with the P85. Kyle Connor of "Out of Spec" channel commented-"The P85 is the Tesla for the car enthusiast, the new Tesla is more main stream.'
Seems Tesla wanted to recoup that 3k they lost on that battery upgrade. I would keep that old one as well.
You can keep the old HV battery, but Tesla will charge you for the "core charge"
Sounds like you scored on that Tesla…fantastic maintenance history, indestructible door handles, new motor and a new larger battery. You can’t loose on that car…with the entry price I can understand your wanting to keep an EV in the fleet. I wonder why Tesla offered you more on trade than what they offered the original owner?
What I keep telling people is to buy a high mileage Tesla, because you know the battery packs have been charged regularly, and the owner has kept up with maintenance. If you buy a lower mileage Tesla around the same year, you will more than likely have battery pack issues because it’s bad on the batteries if the car sits more than it does being driven. A high mileage one usually costs $12-16k. If you can get the $4k tax credit, you can get it for $8-12k. You can’t find many nice cars like this for around that price.
What’s more crazy is that Tesla has never changed the body style other than the front face, and interior. I think they made the Model S a little wider to fit a bigger battery. But you’re still getting the same driving experience either way, it doesn’t matter how old. Now sure, the newer Tesla’s are much quicker, but I like having a comfortable car. And tbh, I think the seats in the older ones are a lot more comfortable than the newer ones. I’ve sat in a 2020 Model S, and a 2013 Model S. The 2013 felt more like a luxury car, while the 2020 felt like a sports car.
I’m just curious to see how DIY friendly the car can be to work on. These videos have me thinking, should I get a cheap used Tesla.
Hey Uber man! Haven’t seen you in forever. I’ve need researching Tesla and found you again!
Welcome back!
Great video! Question- how do you take the car out of service mode? Are there prompts? Just curious-
There is a button to edit service mode
Watched the original video for this car. Did I miss it? Does this car still have the Unlimited Super charging?
Randy, Great Content and I agree I find it really interesting to see how long this Vehicle will last It’s Greener than buying a New one because the carbon footprint in building it is already done. It’s a Nice looking car and look forward to seeing you work on something left field like a Tesla, Bravo Sir 🇺🇸👍🏴
You stole that Telsa Randy. Enjoy your ride 😎😎👍👍
you speak so passionately about this car
Are you sure it doesn't have adaptive cruise control? My 2014 eventually got it via update.
ACC hardware was added November of 2014 in the '14 model. Must be an earlier production date.
That cold was bad in south Colorado last week.
Super interesting and exciting video. Love it when you get Lucky!
So they tried to charge him for the larger battery, which would have had the additional capacity locked out?
Or they locked the additional capacity out because they came down on the price?
That's a nice car, I'm dying to by 16-18 p90d or p100d, love those year models.
Keep it randy... great work on this channel
Hey, I just watched your video. If you bring the car to California, I can get that battery software lock off your tesla 😎 I no longer take my tesla to a service center they lie about everything to get money out of your pockets.
Sooner than later these Tesla centers will get the manufacturer in a world of shit . 😮😮😮😊😊😊😊😊
Would love to learn, were working on friend's Tesla in Austin
Great video😀🔥
Thanks 🔥
hope you keep this tesla its a good one. such a bummer tesla lied to him.
What was the reason for the new battery? What was the mileage he was getting at 250K miles when he got it replaced?
Did the previous owner mention at what millage did the battery failed. And also other major problems started.? I'm guessing the car didn't give him any problems until after 200k miles. does that sound about right?
Very very interesting serie of video's on this Tesla and their high mileage wear.
Just asking wondering how long will Tesla support the software on your car ? Thanks
Tesla no longer updates the software in this car.

@@AutoAuctionRebuilds You can do a MCU upgrade, which if you can find those parts 2nd hand, can be done yourself for around $1k. And you’ll get the latest updates then! Yours had MCU1, which can be upgraded to MCU2
I hope Tesla brings back that silver for the new cars. It’s just perfect
I injected grease (red something) into the upper link. Noises when away (noise started at 90k km)
Great story! So no free supercharging carried over to the new owner?
Looking at a 2014 p85 but Maximum battery charge level reduced for $6,500 im really tempted i have yet to go see it but im trying to get info on this error and if it always means that the battery is going bad or it its work taking the risk on and seeing about replacing a modules in the battery
There's a bad battery help group on Facebook, bMS error something
I’m not a big EV fan however, I dig the content. So I’m all for it 🤝🏼
Were you able to get the free supercharging for life turned on for your car?
Smart move to hang on to the old one , its a cool car .
Just saw a lucid Air what a great looking car! Expensive but much nicer than most ev cars i have seen.
lucid is going out of business, be careful, they just fired 70% of their employees
I saw in another video that consumer was told the extra battery capacity will be released over time as the battery degrades. So charging to 100% still not a good idea. If that is true who knows.
It’s pretty old and has not a lot of modern features so I think a Chevy Malibu would be a good comparison if it was newer and had lot of technology maybe a Mercedes-Benz
What happened with the free super charging you mentioned in first video
See if you have power into the blower motor fuse module. See if you have power out of the module. There may be a resistor on the resister module circuit board.
This is a great video.
We have the same car, I got mine for $9k when my friend got the new Plaid
The Tesla dealer, wanted the $3k back, which the owner had got them to swallow for the P90 replacement battery.
Agree. About keeping the Tesla S. The Nanny computers do compete with the driving experience to the detriment of all. Do get new tires before taking that trip which could involve snow and ice. That car will pay for itself.
Right there folks. Listen to people who HAVE Teslas, not people who HATE Teslas.
I took my beloved 04 Honda Pilot with 100k for service (all fluids) a few months ago and they said my transmission was faulty and i needed to replace it at a cost of $3500 which i declined! I noticed it jumped when i shifted and when changing gears so i ended up replacing all the motor and trans mounts with brand new honda parts i found online and the engine and trans jumping went away. i spent like 300 bucks on parts! Dealers unfortunately are a rip off some are good but many just want to replaced whole assembly they don’t want to just replace the part they want to do everything because it’s easier and makes them more money!
I absolutely respect your decision on not trading in the tesla, It definitely still has some life and could go for more in the future. It will keep going for many more miles without a problem, just some regular maintenance and its as good as a new one😄
The trip with the tesla an the prius was awesome
This is why some people will buy a car, pending on the make & model... buy it with a lot of miles on it because the previous owner had paid for all the major repairs & you'll be riding pretty. ( Some cars)
Enjoying the ongoing saga of the high mile S!
Tesla Model 3 owner here- I make it a point to hammer on my brakes at least a couple of times a week just to keep them moving properly and not rust up from lack of use. 84,000 miles and my brake pads look like a lot of life left on original brakes.
Tesla tried to get the balance of the battery replacement when he needed the links replaced. That's what that was all about.
You should look into unlocking the battery I'm sure someone out there is going to know how to make that happen.
What years of Model S could benefit from the rear camera upgrade? thank you.
Anything prior to 2016
Hey randy, love the content on your channel. been watching your videos on the tesla. It made me think, I don't know if you know this but hertz the rental car company is dumping 20,000 tesla models from there fleet. so my guess(and I could be wrong) is that used tesla models will be going down a little in value/ price once they hit the market. so it could be a good time for buying used tesla models. Seems like you got a very good deal since all of the stuff that was replaced!!!
I miss the obeche gloss wood from my P85D.
Sounds like you might keep the old Tesla. How will that work out as you can't sell it too yourself to put it in your name. Would you just register it under AAR? I've done that with my car and found insurance is cheaper for some reason, though registration is a little more, I get to claim it as a tax deduction so ends up actually being cheaper. Plus I get a tax deduction on maintenance and gas.
