What were the most impactful parts of this talk for you?
The humbleness of focusing on getting better all the time rather than stroking your ego. (The Metallica part).
Malcolm X part....I love the idea of using your deadline to your most alive time....the idea that every moment in some way we can get stronger and stronger is so inspiring
@@Human_Evolution- an amazing example of adopting the student's mindset
@@fellow9yro578 If Malcolm X can turn jail time into alive time, we can turn our days of freedom into alive time certainly
Daily Stoic The internal vs external score card part was big for me.
A great antidote to the Golden Age of Narcissism.
exactly my thoughts...
wow so true!!!
perfectly said
Each night before bed I always find myself thinking about how lucky I am to be alive and able to experience the precious moments life gives us.
Out of 2 billion spermatozoids, end up a winner? So upsetting !
"Do not place your identity in the outcome, but rather, in the input of your efforts"
"Where i am putting my identity is not in the outcome but in the input...Wow i love that.Thats solid for me.14:10
If there is no outcome what is the point?
@@carolmosher7745 you got it wrong bro. He never said there is no outcome.Read again i recommend.
@@raymondtendau2749 Ok, so you compete but you don't win? You build but you don't complete? What is the point of that? Ego is all about outcome. It's why we exist!
@@carolmosher7745 Unfortunately,you still decide to Misunderstand it,thats your choice tho,you are right i think😂
The best thing happened to me during this pandemic : Robert Greene, Ryan Holiday, then it leads me to Stoic Philosophy 🙏🏼 Hard time, but I start appreciating everything happening to me 🙏🏼 I’m slowly but changing !!!! Thank you
"you focus not on how good you are, not on what you've done, but on how much better you can get"
Well said!
You've just blown my head off🤯 !! I always look at the world with a positive attitude and try to be humble too but I just had to subscribe to your channel sooooo much truth in what your saying. Love ❤️ what you do ! keep up the good work!👍🏾🙌🏾
Keeping ego at bay by always striving to get better could be the most impactful part for me. But the part that exposes how ego limits us is very useful also.
Working, studying, learning and working out, and be around other people are great methods for keeping yourself humble and gracious. Staying home alone and engaging in social media will easily create a puffed-up ego and false image. This is why having any kind of job is so important.
Super inspiring for everybody. We all struggle with our ego. Its so much more attractive to have your own personal successes yet remain humble throughout.
Shimi Shiba yeah.
I can't even explain how grateful I am to have found your books and RUclips channel. Thanks for this jewel
Very easy to lose sight of these things day to day. Good talk
I am crying as I hear this, I wish I had been schooled in this. I should have known this 60 years ago. In middle to high school and college.
My ego is my friend, we hang out... Some say they have a soul, I am a soul and I have an ego. When I finally learned the difference between the the two voices, everything changed...
He who humbles himself will be exalted, he who exalts himself will be humbled. - Jesus Christ
Just like buddha says, "learn how to suffer so you wont suffer no more."
The majority of the worlds religions teach the same thing - be humble and learn. This makes sense that this universal idea was.echoed in the religions and major secular thinkers before, during and after Christianity.
The idea that you should lean on confidence over ego and confidence is based on your experiences, learning and practice of your craft! Leaning on ego is like walking with your shoes untied, eventually you will trip up.
Ego is the engine that drives confidence. Without Ego there is nothing.
What a great video! The most impactful were the examples of leaders who do the right thing when the right thing affects them negatively. Such an aspirational goal!
Selfless leadership is incredibly inspiring
I'm just 8 min into this talk and already I can see how good Ryan has become in delivering his talk. He is sharper with great flow and punchlines in between. Really engaging to watch. I have seen most of his previous talks and I can really tell the difference in the before and now. Great job sir. Great job.
This message takes on a new meaning during those crazy time! Instead of watching tv, scroll though SM, take a book, learn, so we can leave the isolation better than when it's all started!
RUclips : "Here's a speech on stoicism."
Me: "Okay, sure."

Hello Ryan. How the fuck did you learn so much at such a young age. I have a tremendous amount of respect and gratitude for you. You are a great student, teacher and a mentor. Thanks and wish you all the humility .
I hope this will be mandated curriculum in every classroom from this day forward, starting in 8th grade, or high school. Your ideas are big. People will see how valuable this is, probably late.
The death of the ego is the awaken of the soul; ego is the enemy.
Great summary. I'm fairly familiar with stoicism and keep it close to my hear but this brings it back down to earth well.
Learn it till you earn it.
Great video.
Love this perspective.
For someone so young...yr insights are wonderful...just shows how a soul is ageless.....bravo!👍
I'm impressed by how clear and moving your message is, officially a new subscriber!
The reality of his words and how he defines this mindset to live freely with being intune with oneself " humility and being present , learning to not worry about anything ...
Such an enlightening lecture. Simple yet profound. Thanks Ryan👍👍
I´m almost done with this video, but the one thing that caught my attention is post-traumatic growth. I once injured my whole back practicing archery and I was forced to take an 8 month break. When I came back, I had the best season of my life and that was even better when I missed half of it due to the injury
I watch your videos and I think it's working out many thanks iv led a HECTIC SELF CENTRED APPROACH TO LIFE IM TRYING TO BE A BETTER PERSON THAN BEFORE AND THESE ARE HELPING ME 💯💚✌
The fact you mentioned Joe Satriani made my day!!!!!!!! These are guys are looked up to my child hood, Kirk was also mentored by Steve Vai btw :P
One of the best lectures I have ever seen!
I have ur book and I love ur videos. Keep doing you man.

“Why shall the Roman people suffer if I don’t feel it first “ absolutely love that
We need more videos like this! Love the book, thank you for making it!
Aloha Ryan, I love your stoic messages! I want my 11 year old granddaughter to hear them. However, I hesitate due to the not very often but, in my opinion, unnecessary expletives. In the future, could they be beeped out? Please? Thank you!
Incredible insights for a truly balanced life. Wisdom at its finest, great job Ryan
Amazing talk..we need to embrace of what we are ? Don't let ego get the best of you...
As a guitarist , you touched my soul

Awesome information. Thank you
Awesome video, thank you!
So so good
You are awesome Ryan thank you
Thank you!
Where is the video where Ryan talks about the toxic news cycle? He talks about how news is always "breaking" or "developing" and how news is designed not to inform but to sell ads.
Wish I could give this 10 thumbs up. Literally first thing in RUclips where I turned on my notifications
Do not put too much emphasis on humility and gratitude no matter how nice these qualities are, because they won't necessarily drive you forward. Also, every person is wired differently and someone is more naturally humble than others. But there are many ways to Rome (ego or not), and thus - what people really should be focusing on is their strengths and abilities and go their own way.
There are many more people out there with a sense of false humility who are too scared to take big risks and really make it (and thus secretly hate and envy those who have a more grandiosity spirit) than people who have the guts to be who they really want to be. Being constantly humble, following the herd and keep your head down with gratitude is not a great recipe for success... It's just people deluding themselves to think they are so "good", but really just afraid...
Thank you.
Memento Mori is often a very and awkwardly misunderstood meaning:
Lots of people do not realise how life can end abruptly, i.e. my own life can cease at any instant, and then my questions would be ...what have I done with it? Have I done the right thing?
Just hope to have revealed it in the end.
Very good speech.
Memento Mori is actually, if you read it, one of the principles of The Bushido Code. It prompts every Samurai to imagine himself on his death bed, looking back at his life, and asking himself what he regrets and what he would have done differently.
Great content. Thank you for sharing!
Great talk Ryan. A lot to learn from. But if it had just a little bit of humour it would be so much more engaging as a talk.
I don’t think he has much of a capacity for quality humor.
He’s doing really well with what he’s been given.
Thank you so much for this video!
Thank you

We can all learn from Buddy! :)
"I write about the ancient stoics a lot in my books"
-- Ryan providing the greatest understatement in RUclips history.
😂😂
I sincerely wish that our world's most powerful leaders would absorb the amazing message in this video.
Great video
"Fake it till you make it." Another meaning: Act he way you want to be and one day you will become the way you act.
That's how I interpret this phrase.. Subconsciously we need to believe that we can achieve our goals..
Kick ass, well said. Keep it up. Real Deal Stuff
Glad he knows about John wooden and his approach to success.
Love it! Thank you
Great video. You Rock
Ryan is a metalhead. Fucking awesome.
Awesome!
Marcus Aurelius: "Never let the future disturb you. You will meet it, if you have to, with the same weapons of reason which today arm you against the present."
Ego is a edifice built out of the increasing self awareness of the mortal feeling child in relation to the world it lives in. What it is made out of becomes its expression. Usually it becomes a reaction to suffering and death.
Jalaja Bonheim’s book “ The Sacred Ego” has a unique positive perspective on the ego.
Kawhi Leonard - Humble. Confident. Best basketball player in the world. #kingofthenorth
Lebron is the best.

“The greatest ego-trip around is getting rid of your ego.” - Alan Watts
You can’t avoid ego bc it doesn’t exist...it’s an idea you have about your who you are.
So what we should do?
@@pedroarrosi6324 That is the question. Isn't it?
Why do you need something to do?
Ego is like a persona that basis comes from other external factor, like telling yourself you’re the greatest. Like affirmations that you’re special, that you deserve the title or your great because of stats instead of doing things that you want. Ego will remove when you stop measuring yourself based on other people’s opinions and other worldly standards. That’s why when you remove your Ego it’s very liberating.
great talk! worth re-watching
The one who puts the finishing touches on their life each day is never short of time.
Love your example of the guitarist for Metallica. That's the difference between someone who creates from the heart with passion as a supposed to someone who does it for money. Wonderful, terrific presentation. It's just important to meet one's own needs. To go within and listen to your own guidance. I took over a month off on social media it was wonderful. Sure I missed it at first but, I've learned solitude is a good thing if you want to hear what you have to say to yourself. Thank you...do the next right thing. It's my moto to too!
For me, inner scorecard makes most sense because lot of other things I am already familiar with and have been practicing lot of it with some success; inner scorecard and external scorecard is the key for me. It also keeps me humble and keeps me stay away from ego. After watching this video now I sleep well because now I know I am doing my very best and measure myself against my internal scorecard…I still need to find what I would like to have in my inner scorecard but I have few things and already helping me. I see this concept relatable to ‘ Not giving F**k’ mantra of Mark manson’s book.
Brilliant...
Brilliant!
to get better every day dont think you know it all no matter what you already know and have done and prepare for the setbacks in life and fokus on what is in your control . the internal scorecard.
Superb...
Very well said
That was great thank you
The beautiful of ancient philosophy. its that you can applied that knowledge to this amazing moment in our lives. and if humanity learn how to management his own egos the world. would be completely different in any sense. by the way! awesome video :)
Gold!
Ryan Holiday 👏👏👏 You are the real MVP. Thanks for sharing and inspiring 😍❤️ “Amor Fati”
Where was this when I was a teen...lol. Better late than never!! 😀
Great🔝
What's your opinion on the 50th law were Robert talks about people with a strong ego pg 262 I agree that ego is the enemy but do you think you should see ego as an ally and developing a strong ego if only for a day to develop a fearless attitude? Or do you think ego in all its form is useless?
Ego is temporary
Thank you @ryanholiday
Malcolm X... absolute genius and incredible human being
Marcus Aurelius inspires me to waste as less time as possible. I'm currently improving my coding skills and created my youtube channel as a result.
Thats a first step once you grow in awareness you learn to utilise your ego to your advantage thats what it's there for. Not just avoid it, thats silly and immature.
Is that ego or confidence?
Ego is personal importance. Ego comes in many forms like thinking and saying you’re great or other bullshit words instead of doing the things that makes you happy. Like being shy that everyone will laugh at your work. That everyone thinks of you as something better than everyone else instead of doing the task you reall want to do.
Everyday is faster than the last.
18:18 good shit!
