I'm just getting used to the feeling of death. The thing about Stoicism and its emphasis on the individual is that you have to want what it offers. Otherwise, if you're like me and wasted 30 years of your life and its too tiring and sad to think of restarting - well, I just finished life early and there is no obvious exit.

I’ve watched several of his videos on Stoicism. They are great.
Watching this as I eat my eggs and drink coffee, also fighting with the spouse. Memento Mori is something that always brings the act of eating or drinking into focus, allowing enjoyment in each bite. It can break the catatonic phase of the argument away, sweep it under the rug and allow you to sit down for a proper chat. No matter how hard of a talk it is.
I needed this. Great reminder of our own mortality, and that the past and future are but concepts, all we have is the here and now. Thanks Ryan.
Ryan Rocks !, He is a blessing to humanity at a time when we most need to hear his stoic wisdom. I only wish I had learned about stoic philosophy sooner. A breath of sanity when we are surrounded by so many different versions of insanity. Thanks Ryan !
I am Christian, and this message still connects to me. Every time you do something, that may be the last time you do it in this world, in this present mode of being. And i think that’s something we can all agree on; whatever happens after death, it will be different than now. And you won’t experience the exact same things in the exact same way you do on earth, while being alive. There is still urgency.

My grandfather told me at the age of 96, "Ask any 96 year old who wants to be 97?", and the answer they would all want to be 97.
He sadly passed several weeks after his 98th Birthday in 2019 - so thankfully he never met COVID, and the COVID era, and for that I will be eternally grateful.
@@veechu7 I am sorry to hear you lost your grandfather too. But, agree with the sentiment of him avoiding the Covid bit. My FiL died in Jan 21 in a covid ward, of dementia, and with none of us able to see him. Very sad, and I was grateful for the exit my grandfather had been allowed, with us seeing him on the day he passed.

@@Tomm9y It's an Eastern European audience. Ostentatious display of emotion is not only frowned upon, but could be dangerous or potentially lethal, given the history of government benevolence in those, or should I say, these lands...I'm EE as well.

I wish I had come across this when I was in my 20’s. Maybe I would not have spent so much of my time drinking, chasing girls and getting high...then again, maybe not. It was the school of life, and it shaped my character. What a conundrum!

I'm a practising stoic have been for most of my life and stoiciscm is about being happy and in control of your emotions that leads to actions, acknowledging that death is on our door step and once you can accept death and it will happen then live your life and enjoy and if playing video games makes you happy then you are living your life.

The past belongs to death, Seneca said. In the concept of time this means that the only thing you lose when you die is THIS moment. No big deal , I would say. :)
If I die now, I also lose my future time. Wouldnt I? So there is definitely more to lose.

I wonder if this concept could be considered dismissive of rebirth beliefs? Death is in fact an end. There are beliefs that uphold there is no end to someone who is remembered because they exist in a living body though memory. Thoughts to ponder.

The problem is not Death. The problem is that at some point we ll face pain and we ll suffer horrible physical degradation when we'll get old or some cancer will strike us .... What a pity that nobody worries about trying to answer the most important questions! Death whithout pain everyone should accept whithout the help ofany expert philosopher.... Talking about things that matter should be the first concern of philosophy....

In my philosophy studies at university, I have personally read all of the above sources quoted but one. There is no evidence that Marcus Aurelius liked to tuck his son in each night and recite Epictetus’ quote to himself. This quote is written in his meditations, but there is no record of Aurelius practicing this ritual nightly. I would be most grateful to anyone who could furnish a credible source quote. Ryan relays that “it was said...” but by whom?
I don't think he said that he practiced this nightly, but rather it was something to do when he did it.

The orator states we should not infringe on another person's time. Iacocca expressed it "Lead, Follow, or Git Outta the Way." If you knew me you'd say that I'm a lackadaisical, unambitious soul. You'd be right. I found paradise in northern Michigan. Little traffic, no stop signs, no need for a watch. You git the picture. If you are a commuter rushing to work, I'll pull over+ let you pass ASAP. Maybe you are 21 years old and think your time is more important than that of someone 79. But what if you are just a throwaway plastic bottle floating in the ocean. Maybe I cherish and respect Time more. Go ahead + git back to your classroom b4 the bell rings. May the wisdom of Trump continue to be with you.
I agree with you 100% about finding a slower pace of life in a smaller community. Chasing big dreams and big city life can drive people to despair. Trump may be the least stoic public person in America. He is a boiling cauldron of ego, anger, hate, fear, violence, and resentment. I doubt he ever settles his own mind and has a moment of peace or tranquility. Obama was quite a stoic. Unruffled, but caring. Thoughtful. Deliberate. He lifted and connected people, rather than trashed and divided them.

@@TwinkieReid I’m super late too, but I think it might be the _delivery_ of it. The message was great but it could use some “polishing” at times. For me, I wished it had more natural pauses because I didn’t really like the non-stop talking he did for the majority of it.
If it had more breaks, it would’ve been easier for myself to process the things he said and maybe even _reflect_ on it even if only for a brief moment.
Well, if it's a contest, I'm even later. Just curios if the pandemic already spreaded this was made, but since it's a live one and not online, might be after.
Anyway, I wanted to say that I enjoyed the talk and didn't notice the fast speaking, or at least it didn't bother me.
It’s just Ryan’s delivery he has a unique way of speaking that isn’t for everyone
