Kinda reminds me of Nannie Doss - she was the most obvious suspect in basically all the murders she committed. Can't help but wonder if there's an element of sexism to it, like with Myra Hindley and the Moors Murders - people weren't prepared to believe that a woman could do something like that back then.

    • @camillosteuss
      @camillosteuss Год назад +39

Just goes to show that even the most hardened criminals with technically zero remorse have conscience and sensibilities... Being a hitman takes quite the capacity to disregard morals and ethics, but every human has limits and principles, even the most hardcore cases... Even Isreal Keyes had restraint and principles... Practically everyone does... Its just that sometimes those sensibilities are quite offset by being a psychopathic murderer or similar... Hell, Eddie turned himself in after whacking his mother, as he knew that he cant stop on his own... Hell, i have 100x more sympathy for Eddie than this disgusting woman... He at least had some trauma to ``justify`` his madness... Even the monster that is Gacy had a fucked up childhood... This woman may have had some hardships as a youth, but those were no worse than what 99% of the populace had suffered a bit over 100 years ago or more, when we all plowed the fields by hand tools and horse/ox drawn implementation and synth fertilizer was an unknown concept, we all risked starvation and death every day with near 0 medicinal aids, 0 life comfort accessories, 0 whatever... And its not like 99% of medieval population was abhorrent monsters with 0 redeeming qualities...

Well, isnt it true? Most people, nay, 99% of people have standards, and most often, the standards are at least somewhat paradoxical to the person`s nature...
I for example am a lazy piece of shit, but on the other hand, im a fanatical perfectionist who once the inertia is broken - relentlessly does the job until its done to perfection...
How many anti-gay politicians and right-wing hardasses turned out to be quite soft assed sodomites who were not just gay, but were even pedos and other sorts of degenerates...
How many parents expect and preach shit to their kids, but at the same time dont live up to the golden standard they are trying to force onto their kids...
I could go on and on, but yeah, as someone who is somewhat familiar with criminals, i can attest to the fact that most people have standards, even the criminals, be they lesser criminals or the worst of their kind...
Having standards is practically synonymous with being human, more so than even having the full emotional range, as there is quite a few psychopaths out there, and yet they all have some standards... Its just the wonky side effect of sapient sentience...

He was racked with horrible pancreatitis that hospitalized him. Stints were put in, he lost about 100 pounds, spent weeks at the hospital, couldnt even drink a drop of water while he stayed there...all kinds of horribleness.
After all was said and done he looked at the unadjusted bill. It was about a half million dollars. If he wasn't insured, it would have financially devastated him and mom. Safe to say, he hit the fuck out of his out of pocket maximum. Which was still a lot of money but...yeah.

This case was particularly baffling in so many ways. How brazen she was, not seeming to care about a single of her supposed loved ones, it taking so long to be able to officially arrest her... I feel like at least a small part of that is due to most of the victims being black and struggling financially. The way several of these murders were basically shrugged off is sad to see.

Like Simon said several times, how on earth did she still have a job?? Especially since she often just failed to show up.

Yeah sadly it's one of those diseases you'd think we'd be on top of by now, but we're really not. We're still struggling with outbreaks amongst cattle, nevermind humans. Here in the UK they still have a badger cull every year, and this is despite the fact it's long since been proven that badgers aren't responsible for most outbreaks (they have caused some, but not _every_ outbreak). But it's the only thing we know how to do that can even reduce the outbreak risk by _any_ amount, so it continues. TB just isn't talked about nearly enough - especially human strains.

Not to be petty Simon, but TB has never gone away. There are several reason. 1 is the bacteria that causes TB can attack other organs such as the spline, kidney and brain. Those infected don’t show signs of illness and this can lead to wide spread exposure. Also TB left untreated takes up to 5 years to kill. That means the people who are infected but not treated will suffer. TB can be cured if detected rather early. Another reason why TB is so insidious is the initial symptoms are similar to a fever or the common cold. During this time those infected are carriers of TB and unknowingly spread it to others.

Funerals can be very expensive. But with planning, they don't have to be. My mom passed away in August. She had a prepaid cremation plan that paid for the cremation & several copies of her death certificate. You'd be surprised what you need a death certificate for, including turning off the service for her cell phone. All my 2 siblings & myself needed to do was to sign consent for the cremation.

Yes, prepaying the services can be better than having life insurance. Family or in some cases friends or the state doesn't question what the person wanted, no waiting for the insurance to pay and no question of it being paid (ie the benefitter not paying for the funeral). Also can be cheaper but you need to be sure of what you want and that not changing due to life changes.

Hey Simon, quick comment to let you know that tuberculosis killed more people than covid during the same time period. John Green has done a great job advocating for more accessible drug prices and educating everyone here in the interwebs about the scale of this very treatable disease that still kills millions of people today in 2023.

I remember when Coffeehouse Crimes covered this case, it still absolutely blows my mind that she got away with these murders for so long. What sucks most is that it's probably likely that it took so long because her family were impoverished and, tragically, sudden murder isn't an uncommon occurrence in the impoverished parts of Johannesburg. Often times the police don't give priority to those sorts of cases and the fact Rosemary was a cop could mean she had people willing to look the other way for their coworker.
Seriously though, South Africa has had huge protests and calls to action regarding their legal system in recent years. There's likely dozens of serial killers running around South Africa and the rates of femicide is insane. One case from 2019 made international news when a 19 year old college student in Cape Town was assaulted and murdered by a postal service worker in the station, and this man had a long criminal record that should've never allowed him to obtain that position. South Africa is a beautiful and culturally rich country, and I do hope that changes are made someday

I know a lady that works for the police and normally 50%+ of her shifts she 'sick' or awol and the most trouble she had in her whole career was 1 month of suspension without pay and that was split over 2 months. She has been to rehab on the police's dime nearly every year and when she feel like a little holiday she gets the psychologist to book her into a facility for 26 days for her 'mental health'. While in the facility, the psychologist will provides loans that are recouped from the medical aid as fees for treatments/consultations.
