Simon, I have an uncle who died of Tuberculosis in America within the last decade. If they don't catch it early enough, then it becomes impossible to treat.
Yeah sadly it's one of those diseases you'd think we'd be on top of by now, but we're really not. We're still struggling with outbreaks amongst cattle, nevermind humans. Here in the UK they still have a badger cull every year, and this is despite the fact it's long since been proven that badgers aren't responsible for most outbreaks (they have caused some, but not _every_ outbreak). But it's the only thing we know how to do that can even reduce the outbreak risk by _any_ amount, so it continues. TB just isn't talked about nearly enough - especially human strains.
My stepdaughter passed at 17 and in 2023 it cost $12k plus $1800 for the headstone.. thank goodness for life insurance cause we only paid the $1800.. and we buried her in a cashmere white casket, it was gorgeous!! So yes please get Life insurance.. I know it’s macabre but it’s so so helpful!!

Not to be petty Simon, but TB has never gone away. There are several reason. 1 is the bacteria that causes TB can attack other organs such as the spline, kidney and brain. Those infected don’t show signs of illness and this can lead to wide spread exposure. Also TB left untreated takes up to 5 years to kill. That means the people who are infected but not treated will suffer. TB can be cured if detected rather early. Another reason why TB is so insidious is the initial symptoms are similar to a fever or the common cold. During this time those infected are carriers of TB and unknowingly spread it to others.
I was watching a different CC video but my dog came over, flopped on top of my phone, clicked on this video, fast forwarded the first 20 seconds, and then subscribed. So just to let y'all know, 'Appealing to dogs' is definitely something you can market yourself as now
The average funeral in America costs $9,000. The average UK funeral costs £3,900 the equivalent of $4,700 USD or a little more than half of a funeral in the US.
Unexpected death in Canada gets insanely pricey. A lot of funerals in my hometown for young adults/teens were 10-15 thousand. The funeral industry is private and everything privatized has some assholes that drive the prices up You can have a funeral for under 1000, but you have to have a plan for it, or a family member that has an insanely good compartmentalizing abilities in charge of your arrangements. Grief is not great for "how do i not go into debt here" decisions
@niamclean6077 that's sad about young people. There is a funeral director in my local area who provides funerals free of charge for newborns. Which is nice of them.
As a South African I am impressed by your research, you tried to read the names shame wow I knew about her but I never knew some of the information you gave out
Simon, first of all, condolences on the loss of your grandmother. Funerals can be very expensive. But with planning, they don't have to be. My mom passed away in August. She had a prepaid cremation plan that paid for the cremation & several copies of her death certificate. You'd be surprised what you need a death certificate for, including turning off the service for her cell phone. All my 2 siblings & myself needed to do was to sign consent for the cremation.
Yes, prepaying the services can be better than having life insurance. Family or in some cases friends or the state doesn't question what the person wanted, no waiting for the insurance to pay and no question of it being paid (ie the benefitter not paying for the funeral). Also can be cheaper but you need to be sure of what you want and that not changing due to life changes.
I've had a pretty grim 2 years. 3 deaths - Brother early last year, close friend a year ago, then my sister in law (via the brother above) a couple ofmonths ago. My grim years started 2 years ago with the loss of job and a few other things. I've reached the stage in life where I see waking up in the morning as a success because I've survived another night. Actually thankful to be alive in the morning and in generally OK health ☺ I've recently started taking active steps to get my affairs in order just in case. I'm only 47, but after everything that's happened I know as soon as I get that sorted there's nothing left to really worry about. Hopefully I've got a good few years yet 🤞
And if your lawyer says they dont need a death cert, give them one anyway. They totally will and then youll get charged for the call/email telling you they need it. My parents had to deal with that when my brother died. It was stupid.
I really enjoyed the dive into another culture that we got in this episode! Unfortunately the context involved the corruption and manipulation of those cultural norms, but still interesting!
the pronunciations made the horror in this episode palatable, thank you Simon. that's not to say that this woman's crimes should ever be condoned but I appreciate the dedication to cover this case.
This woman really sent shockwaves around our country. I was still a young teen when this story broke and was ignorant to the fact that South Africa had so many serial killers until I started reading about this case years later and fell down the rabbit hole of South African serial killers. I didn't know that we even had any in the first place. To realise that this woman was a cop was crazy. I hope all of Rosemary Ndlovu's victims' families find healing. PS. I must say, as a South African, the mispronunciation of the names of people and places by anyone who isn't South African is always fun and kind of endearing. Always makes me giggle. "Mo-dja-djis-kloof" and "Soo-wee-too" was the best for me. It took a second for me to figure out what Simon was talking about. 😂

Hey Simon, quick comment to let you know that tuberculosis killed more people than covid during the same time period. John Green has done a great job advocating for more accessible drug prices and educating everyone here in the interwebs about the scale of this very treatable disease that still kills millions of people today in 2023.
Was this globally? Because a certain unnamed country (that definitely is NOT China) were putting tuberculosis or pneumonia in lieu of Covid, because the numbers would make the authorities look bad.
I remember when Coffeehouse Crimes covered this case, it still absolutely blows my mind that she got away with these murders for so long. What sucks most is that it's probably likely that it took so long because her family were impoverished and, tragically, sudden murder isn't an uncommon occurrence in the impoverished parts of Johannesburg. Often times the police don't give priority to those sorts of cases and the fact Rosemary was a cop could mean she had people willing to look the other way for their coworker. Seriously though, South Africa has had huge protests and calls to action regarding their legal system in recent years. There's likely dozens of serial killers running around South Africa and the rates of femicide is insane. One case from 2019 made international news when a 19 year old college student in Cape Town was assaulted and murdered by a postal service worker in the station, and this man had a long criminal record that should've never allowed him to obtain that position. South Africa is a beautiful and culturally rich country, and I do hope that changes are made someday
This reminds me of a terrable story from Poland. Few years ago in Łódź, first aid workers (doctors and paramedics) were systematically killing patients in the ambulances - because they had financial agreements with funeral homes... Maybe that is also a topic for the next video here. I can provide more details.
@@gasmonkey1000 I'm Polish. Unfortunetly I heard that from the news, when it happened. People were actually throwing rocks at the ambulances, so massive was the anger.

Hey just a heads up Tuberculosis is still very much around, in fact because of my job I need regular TB screening tests to make sure I haven’t contracted it while at work.
Simon, in regards of tuberculosis, no it is not eradicated. In 2021, my dad got hospitalized and became an inpatient for 2 months because of tuberculosis. Hes still alive thankfully, but it still exists. And for reference, this was in the United States. In Illinois.
More people here in SA died of TB in 2019 than died between Jan and Oct 2020 from Covid. I looked those up on South African government sites in Oct 2020, while under lockdown. Drug-resistant TB is on the increase.
Tuberculosis is still very prevalent in South Africa nowadays even, although we have beauty and huge developments in our country- the hardships of SA are not so few and far between

22:08 Her not losing her job is not so strange in South Africa. I know a lady that works for the police and normally 50%+ of her shifts she 'sick' or awol and the most trouble she had in her whole career was 1 month of suspension without pay and that was split over 2 months. She has been to rehab on the police's dime nearly every year and when she feel like a little holiday she gets the psychologist to book her into a facility for 26 days for her 'mental health'. While in the facility, the psychologist will provides loans that are recouped from the medical aid as fees for treatments/consultations.

All I could think of during Simon's comments about the different kinds of assassins was "Professionals have standards."
Sweet! And I thought today was gonna suck beginning to end. Thank you Simon! You bring enjoyment to alot of people. That's a big in my book man. Your kiddos have an amazing dad to look up to. Keep it up dude!
whoo! I'm early again! these extended CasCrim episodes are a treat y'all! And I mean that in the most respectful way possible because the scripts, editing, storytelling & presentation are all specially tasteful. thank you Simon & team, let's go! (respect to all the victims)
Anything under an hour feels too short.
An hour twenty isn’t “extended”. That’s normal around here.
Don't forget the tangents
Some episodes have reached 3 hours or longer. This is normal
How could "treat" ever be considered disrespectful in this context? I swear some of yall just like to blab
South African here. As grim as this is, it's nice to have the Casual Criminalist team cover one of our cases.
So just to let y'all know, 'Appealing to dogs' is definitely something you can market yourself as now
"Some people are just pieces of shit, aren't they?"
Truer words were never spoken.
The funeral industry is private and everything privatized has some assholes that drive the prices up
You can have a funeral for under 1000, but you have to have a plan for it, or a family member that has an insanely good compartmentalizing abilities in charge of your arrangements. Grief is not great for "how do i not go into debt here" decisions
@niamclean6077 that's sad about young people. There is a funeral director in my local area who provides funerals free of charge for newborns. Which is nice of them.
These cases are the greatest way to get through the day at work. I love listening when im working alone
As a South African, I watched this case as it happened.
What was the initial reaction in the community when she got arrested?
@@Mechabang One of disgust more than anything else.
Actually thankful to be alive in the morning and in generally OK health ☺
I've recently started taking active steps to get my affairs in order just in case. I'm only 47, but after everything that's happened I know as soon as I get that sorted there's nothing left to really worry about. Hopefully I've got a good few years yet 🤞
@@Rachel_M_ Sorry for your losses.
@@jedijessic thanks ☺. Much love ♥
And if your lawyer says they dont need a death cert, give them one anyway. They totally will and then youll get charged for the call/email telling you they need it.
My parents had to deal with that when my brother died. It was stupid.
So nervous and excited to watch this on one… Thank you Simon, Robert and Emma for this awesome video!
You're welcome!
I really enjoyed the dive into another culture that we got in this episode! Unfortunately the context involved the corruption and manipulation of those cultural norms, but still interesting!
Emma this was an excellent episode. Your writing is great
the pronunciations made the horror in this episode palatable, thank you Simon. that's not to say that this woman's crimes should ever be condoned but I appreciate the dedication to cover this case.
Simon: "Jesus. Have we not got rid of that yet? It's 2004. Tuberculosis? That's like a disease of my grandparents."
*JOHN GREEN HAS ENTERED THE CHAT.*
Yesssssss!!!
First of all, my condolences for your grandma.
And yeah, I'd love to see Mike from That Chapter cover this case. Non stop Life Insurance Dance, baby!
omg yes!!!
It would be the entire episode!
Tu tuuut tuututturu
Been a long time subscriber across all your channels, and its kinda fun seeing parts of buisness blaze come across into all the others 😂 keep killing it simon and the whole crew!!!!
Ty for keeping the content rolling. You’re the best and have made sure our Simon addiction has remained satisfied.
Absolutely brilliant script. A well written story with an engaging flow.
Brilliant 1 hour 20 minutes of Simon waffling on, just what I need.
Yay!!! :-) Another masterpiece by Robert! Could hear it immediately. The smoothness and perfect subtleness, mixed with classic memes from Community. Robert is seriously one of the two best editors in the whole Whistlerverse. The Blaze is strong with this one!
Applause for Emma, this was a very interesting insight into SA.
Yes! I've learned so much from John Green about TB. Wow!
I think these are recorded way early, like this may have been recorded around the time that all popped off if not before it.
As a South African I love the SA videos. I enjoy the UKified pronunciations. Beautiful!
As a South African, I realize that we've been through a lot as a country....
Enjoying all these South African episodes - still hoping for one on Boetie Boer
Nope, Tuberculosis is still going strong, as a matter of fact, drug resistant strands are popping up more frequently, which is worrisome
This reminds me of a terrable story from Poland. Few years ago in Łódź, first aid workers (doctors and paramedics) were systematically killing patients in the ambulances - because they had financial agreements with funeral homes... Maybe that is also a topic for the next video here. I can provide more details.
I was thinking of that one too. Ya hear or it from Shrouded Hand too?
@@gasmonkey1000 I'm Polish. Unfortunetly I heard that from the news, when it happened. People were actually throwing rocks at the ambulances, so massive was the anger.
@@martanowicka3340 Honestly I'm surprised that no ambushes took place on EMT's based on the bullshit that those assholes pulled
@@gasmonkey1000 There were few murder attempts in retaliation. True horror.
I hope he takes you up on this. It sounds like a fascinating story and I would like to hear the details.
Thank you to Emma and the rest of the team for putting this together.
I love how the detective Mamumnba is so humble. Even after staring in the movie or documentary, he just says "I simply have one of those faces."
That is awesome that the possible fame has not corruptrd him or changed his humble manor into a giant ego.
Love you Simone!
P.S. I still have and often wear my Business Blaze Hoodie. The one with your head in a line outlne on the front about 6 inches tall.
How about doing a limited edition release of T shirts, Hoodies, full like Today I Found Out" Addidas jogging out fits, coffee mugs, etc...
All being reissues of the most popular merch item from previous shows you have done that now only exist in the archives.😢
Plus all new Casual Creminalist merch!
What do you think?
16 policies is insane!!! I’ve heard of a murderer having like 3 or 4 policies but Jesus Christ. That detective is amazing!!! I dint know how no one else had paid enough attention to the MANY red flags before that, but thank god he took initiative.
Once again, Simon has woken up every Apple device in my house by yelling “HEY SIRI” 🤣🤣🤣
Me too! 😂
This was on my iPad, my phone and my kid’s phones and this iPad all freaked to answer him 😂

This was another hard one to get through. A long stretch of pointles misery with no understandable reason for letting thing to get as bad as it did.
Finally!!! I've watched practically every video on the channel and I was running out of stuff to listen too while I work.
Funerals in America can cost upwards of $10k dollars
Really $10k?
Easily.
"My grandma was from Johannesburg. She recently died. RIP." The way Simon said that so casually, you're taking the name of this channel too literal 😂😂
As a South African 🇿🇦 watching this I feel like correcting you always when u mention names of the places like Soweto , Khayelitsha , Mamelodi 😭😭😭
“HOW DO YOU SERIAL KILL ON THIS?” New shirt idea I have to have one 😭💀
Love a Friday when we get a CasCrim and Brain Blaze episode on the same night, a great start to the weekend 👌🏻👍🏻
Sorry for saying this again but could I request the case of Michele Avila? Her story is hardly talked about. One of the people who hurt her was on Doctor Phil. I want to so badly have her story told. It breaks my heart
I really enjoy these videos. Your script writers are amazing 😊
Horrific serial killer aside, very interesting to learn more about some of the local tribal culture.
In Illinois.
was he vaccinated?
@@PutinsMommyNeverHuggedHimVaccination against TB is uncommon in the US since infection is rare.
@tiryaclearsong421 good point
More people here in SA died of TB in 2019 than died between Jan and Oct 2020 from Covid. I looked those up on South African government sites in Oct 2020, while under lockdown. Drug-resistant TB is on the increase.
Simon, this is the highlight of my very busy Friday! Thank you!
We acknowledge you tried Simon in regards to the pronunciations and we appreciate it.

I’m absolutely fascinated by your personality Simon! 🤷♀️✌️
Tuberculosis is still very prevalent in South Africa nowadays even, although we have beauty and huge developments in our country- the hardships of SA are not so few and far between
I feel slow, I must of lost and found the thread of this story over five times. But I love the video and I understand it now.
37:35 Simon's realization punctuated by an "uh oh" like that is golden
Considering the Krugersdorp murders, I'm surprised that the insurance companies didn't catch her and not pay out.
Ubuntu was named after the literal definition because the idea was to make computers (their operating systems) available to everyone, not just those that could afford it. And it absolutely worked -- you can thank open source competition for why Microsoft had to give up on enforcing consumer licensing. They might be nerds, but they were good hearted nerds, so the name fits
Oooo a long one!! Thank you!!

Oh, the old intro isback. I love it. Not that the new one was bad or anything. But the old one has this Neo Noir Mystery Vibe......

Emma. Fantastic case study!
This lady has to be the worst, most obvious killer in history. How the hell did she get away with it for so long?
South Africa, that's how :P
Her victims were black and poor. Being from a village you will be shocked how many people are murdered and nobody cares
14:46 “$290! That’s extraordinary. I pay less to go to the doctor”.

Yeah I was stabbed 14 times, on 3 July, 2019, and I'm happy to be alive. ❤ And let me tell you baby I got scars. Got stabbed twice in the face, narrowly missing my eyes. Stabbed 5 times in the left leg, having to relearn to walk. One went in my liver, one in my back... Yeah, i am covered in scars. I was dead on arrival to the hospital and they had to resuscitate me on the table. I remember having a choice to let go of my life or to survive for my daughter's sake and my choice was for my daughter
Their union is so strong that it is hear to impossible to fire a policeman/woman in S.A. I know a policeman who is a crackhead & is often seen full uniform at drug dens. He was sent on the governments dime to rehab twice but he still smokes.
In my old hood a cop-turned-[Insert Crime Here] was just a cop.
In the United States in some neighborhoods "law enforcement" simply means occupying army or a systemic crime organization.

South Africa used to have an independence day on 31 May celebrating independence from the "British" empire in 1961. So, I think the apartheid problem started a bit before that. I am a South African of colour by the way.

I am just as aghast as Simon as to how her brazen obviousness had this go on for so long. That officer is a legend for sure just for noticing her suspiciousness and basically telling the other police officer yeah I got this case now.
Truly one of the most psychotic people I’ve ever heard of.
There was a group of women in England who did the same thing. They murdered their husbands, children, neighbors and their friends. It was when life insurance policies were new.
