‘Don’t ask me for any more notebooks’ ‘This notebook is so cool! Nice leather cover, all the rules, this is awesome!’ ‘No really, this was a nightmare, I don’t want to make anymore’ ‘This is the best notebook, screw those other notebooks’ Awww come on Simon, just raise the price to $25 and let more viewers get one 😂
I would totally pay at least twice as much for that notebook. I was so excited about it for so long but I somehow missed the announcement when they were ready 😢
Hearing Simon say "I can't do a kickflip for s**t" made me laugh way too hard. Him and his Vessi's, out on the cobblestones, light drizzle, screaming in frustration at his deck. Excellent visual.
I was laughing hard at Mr G having that tantrum. I used to really enjoy Chris Lilley's hilarious characters, before he started doing racist crap for laughs.
Fun fact: I grew up about an hour from Eustis at the same time this took place, and also played a live-action version of this game. It was great fun, and we killed exactly zero people. The people in my group were actually pretty pissed that this guy was bringing us so much unwanted attention. 😳
Happy Halloween to you all from The Basement! This was a weird but fun one to edit lol. Hope you all enjoy it. Thanks Matt for the killer (lol) script!
Simon Whistler, the man who has repeatedly stated he wishes to be cryogenically frozen in order to live forever, and loves collecting capital, and who I've only ever seen in a dimly lit old building in eastern Europe, has a fondness for vampires. Who'dve guessed?
IDK if I'd call it the most iconic - I've loved vampires since I was a little kid, and I'm only one year younger than Simon, and never heard of it until a couple years ago, and only watched it last October. It's not talked about enough, and lots of people have no idea it exists - which is a damn shame!
There was SO much left out in the Dismembered Appendices: 1. This story was featured on America's Most Wanted were the host, John Walsh, had his crew interview a local group of the game's fan club, which was called The Camarilla (named after one of the factions from the game). They played the game in the "Live Action" style and explained how there was no physical contact allowed and absolutely no blood drinking or animals allowed. At the end of the segment, John Walsh showed several of the game books (several of which I personally owned at the time) and said, "If you see your children with any of these products, they may be murderers." My father, who already hated me and anything I did, demanded I get rid of my books. Had it not been for my mother, things would've gotten abusive. 2. The parent company for Vampire: the Masquerade threatened to sue Fox, John Walsh and America's Most Wanted for slander and defamation for Walsh's false claims, which were very reminiscent of the speeches given by clergy during the Satanic Panic of the 1980s. Walsh, a stanch conservative, surely got the idea from various false news reports and the like. 3. At the same time as the America's Most Wanted episode aired, television and movie producer, Aaron Spelling was in the midst of producing a TV show loosely based on Vampire: the Masquerade called Kindred: the Embraced. Spelling, who was also producing Beverly Hills 90210 and Melrose Place for Fox Television (the same Fox that aired America's Most Wanted), threatened to pull all of his shows from the network if Walsh didn't recant his statement about the game and its players. Spellings shows were Fox's biggest money makers at the time, so Fox had choice but to force Walsh to apologize, which he did via written statement an a future episode. 4. This seems to have been the straw the finally broke the camel's back, however, since America's Most Wanted wasn't renewed for another season after this incident, though I believe it had a short revival some years later. 5. The Camarilla, which was a non-profit organization at the time, issued an order banning all members from discussing the game and its activities with the press from that point forward. We weren't even allowed to advertise for members or any charity actions we were conducting. I know this, because I was a member for several years after these murders took place. It left a scar of the game and those who played it.
Wow. I mean, good on Spelling for basically forcing Walsh to apologize. I've got nothing but sympathy for the man for the loss of his son, but trying to bring back the good ol' Satanic Panic is... certainly a look. Thanks for all of the additional info!
Its too bad Kindred the Embraced was pretty terrible. Cases like this and the Satanic Panic really hurt TTRPGs for ages. Even now LARP gets a pretty bad rap despite the fact it's really just improv with game mechanics.
Fantastic additional info! Had my husband watch this episode (and shared your comment with him) because he's been into TTRPGs since High School, where he even helped start an RPG club -- which got banned shortly after a teacher saw the "disturbing images" in the World of Darkness base handbook. And this was in 2006. 😅
John Walsh has a complicated legacy. He did a lot of good and a lot of bad and still is continuing to do both to this day. I hate that Conservatives in general hold on to the fallacies that games and television shows make dangerous people when they’ve been disproven so many times. Walsh is no different than any other conservative in that regard. He has however put a giant spotlight on missing and exploited children though, so it’s hard to necessarily hate the guy. I do find some of his beliefs distasteful and morally dubious though.
Simon, you of all people should know that "Don't f**k up your kids!" has been steadily moving up the charts since the early days and is now solidly #2 but making a reasonable case for the top spot. Also, I now have an ache in my heart for the 'Definitely not my crimes' notebook that I will never own.
I'm with Simon on this. Heather didn't get off scot-free... she lost her parents and has to live with that. As for Rod, I honestly think that a death sentence would have been lighter on him than life without parole. Oblivion is easy; there's literally nothing involved. Staying alive and un-abused in prison when you're that young is another matter entirely.

Hey Simon, an idea for your journal would be to reach out to a nonprofit and let them handle the distribution, you can get 15% or whatever and I can order your journal while knowing I'm benefitting survivors
Great suggestion. CC is the only channel I watch of this genre that doesn't actively create ways of assisting victims of violence or crime/unsolved crimes (that in aware of). I think it's highly commendable to do such a thing. After all, they're profiting from the trauma of others.
I remember watching a documentary on this a while ago. Something that Simon didn’t mention was that Rod’s mom, after her son was sentenced to death, did an interview where she declared that “we don’t die”, apparently still believing they were vampires.

I ADORED Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I went to a convention and I got the full musical score to Once More With Feeling, and all kinds of Watchers Manuals etc etc. I cannot wait to listen to the audible thing they made recently!
I don't care it's 11 months after this one aired, I am commenting. I did not expect Simon to be ranting about how he likes Buffy and how Edward Cullen is weird, but I am here for it! ahaha!
I feel like now basically everyone agrees child beauty pageants are just super creepy and should NOT be a thing, unless you're one of creeps putting your kids in them... Stop fucking up your kids! (Edit: I also very much enjoy the term "edge lord" 🤣)
Thanks for the book plug! I enjoy Matt's scripts so much and I'm a massive fantasy fan so I've just bought it and look forward to reading it - thanks Matt! :)
Simon “the book was so hard to deal with it’s not worth it” Also simon: “this is the coolest fucking book around and I have 100 left, but you can’t have any”
Omg the fact that Simon brought up Buffy made my day. Im 23 and it hasnt been on air since i was a little kid. Its been my favorite show since I was 14
You're entitled to *alllll* the shameless plugs Matt. And please, keep it up. I'll pick up your book when I can afford to do so. Which means shameless plug reminders are fantastic.
Simon, you could set up an Etsy shop to make life easier for you for selling the notebooks. While they would take a small fee, you could definitely sell them for more and charge for shipping, which they can calculate and such 💜 I was saddened by the fact I missed the notebooks too but I get that it’s a lot of work for something like that. I would have zero problem paying more than 15 bucks for sure. Also Spring is not great. I’ve dealt with them on numerous occasions and their products just aren’t great.
Had the most perfect ad break moment: at the point t Simon is saying “ he turned to her and in all seriousness said” the advert cut in with “I don’t have time for a healthy breakfast or lunch so I have been using Huel…” Hilariously perfect timin.
Spelling mistake in the thumbnail lol. It's awesome we're getting back to back episodes, it makes work less boring whilst listening to Simon and his tangents
It did come out on Halloween! Good job! Was so excited and suprised when i saw this video, clicked immediately. Hope everyone has a wonderfully spooky Halloween!
the ad cuts are always terribly hillarious; took her to the graveyard, looked her directly in the eyes and said.... "I chose wix for my buisness" I dont know if i love or hate these translations, they give me emotional whiplash
Wait- you AND That Chapter doing an episode on the same criminal?? This is cool! You two should do a crossover episode! Now THAT would be KILLER!! Thanks so much for your work y’all
You know, it happens some times with so many TC channels, especially with a Halloween episode. I love TC though so I'll probably watch that one after this.
Man i just watched a Casual Criminalist episode yesterday. This is a treat. Edit: Its also been awhile but I played Vampire the Masquerade with a few friends in Highschool and starting to get into Werewolf the Apocalypse, so hearing this is just sad because I'm pretty sure this incident caused many people ti look at the game and the developers with a side eye.
First off!!! Happy Halloween to all my CC friends 👻 second!!! Another episode so fast!! This is the best way to end my day ☺ now gonna dive in and enjoy.. be well to everyone and thank you to the basement crew... ♥
I feel so much better hearing this. I found your channel earlier this year and wanted to buy a journal and couldn’t find them. I was upset cause I thought they sold poorly but if it was your mental health good for you. I have a couple therapy clients that I build rapport talking about your work so you and the whole team are amazing!!!!
I remember reading a true crime book about this case a few years after it happened. They helped give us late 90's to early 2000's goth kids a bad rep. Most of us were just little oddballs befriending other oddballs and having fun. And I still play VtM to this day.
Anyone feel like they new what was coming after the murder cop a couple back that the ones he mentions having scripts for then he's keeping us in suspense
I've watched stuff about this story a billion times but as with many episodes, I like hearing Simon tell me about it.. Thank you Simon and Thank you to your writers and Jen!! I APPRECIATE YOU ALL AND YOUR WORK. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
I'd always been curious about the incident that prompted the guy who started a tabletop roleplaying game club back in high school to add a bit about being able to separate fantasy from reality to his little intro to TTRPGs during our first meeting.
Simon, you should consider giving The Lost Boys a go. A great 80's film. Campy vampire fun at its best. I know you are not a big film guy but I imagine you might enjoy it.
I’m from Murray, KY and one of the ladies I went to church with was one of Rod’s teachers. She said that he’d always made her uneasy and that sometimes when she looked in his eyes, she could see the devil- but she always had a flair for dramatics so we didn’t take her too seriously. Rod and his vampire cult are definitely still prevalent in the local lore, and every once in a while you’ll find someone who interacted with him and has a story to share. I know the crime happened in Florida, but Murray seems to take a weird type of ashamed pride in the fact that it’s Rod’s birthplace. Everyone who moves to town hears about it pretty quickly and the rumor mill never seems to stop. Regardless, it’s always surreal to hear people talk about this case on a larger scale, I never hear about my little town anywhere else. Lovely job, Matt!!
I went to college in Murray. There was a place we walked to in the woods at Kenlake in LBL and I was told the Vampire Clan used to meet there to sacrifice animals. No idea if that was true, but just part of the lore, I guess.
(Editor Chris here) There was an early cut of the video where as he says, "Are they just born with the ability to be super charismatic?" I actually cut to an old 90s Maybelline ad, but I thought the reference was too obscure, so I cut the joke out. Now I regret that decision hahaha
For the past.... bunch of episodes, don't fuck up your kids was upgraded to rule number two, despite it technically being a rule to prevent criminals happening vs not being caught. BUT... it is a very important rule, and often the way criminals get fucked up is through the parents doing crimes to their kids.
Re the whole generations and pop culture thing: I went into a coffee shop today, background music sounded terribly familiar, but I could not put my finger on it so I asked the girl behind the counter, who looked early-mid 20s (I am mid-30s like Simon), she showed me her phone screen, I saw it was Hans Zimmer's "Now We Are Free" and I was like "Gladiator, of course!". She stared at me blankly and replied that she had no idea and she hadn't seen the movie. Silly, but that left me kinda rattled -"Gladiator" is one of those movies every millenial either saw or at least heard about. Weird to see kids to whom it doesn't ring any bell.
As a goth we do not claim this people. Yes, Sondra too loved roleplaying as a vampire and was too focused on that game. I guess that her being assaulted didn't leave her very stable, but she should have been the responsable one, what the hell? Damn, I missed the notebook launch X'D
Welcome everyone to the CasCrim Halloween Spooktacular! Yes he let me do a Halloween special, and yes this is two scripts of mine in a row! I’m so pleased right now! I hope you all enjoy and any comments and criticisms are welcome! Happy Halloween! 🎃🎃🧛🏻♂️🧛🏻♀️ (And yes, we did everything in our power to make sure this came out on Halloween!)
I watch all videos of CC and think you all do a fantastic job of bringing the stories to life while providing overall indepth information about the crimes and impacts to lives involved, keep up the brilliant work, love you guys (and gals)!!!😊😊😊😊
Thank you Simon, and a happy Hallowe'en to you and all your viewers! This is a very nice treat, two episodes in a week. Hope you have a lovely late autumn with your family in Prague. Over here in the middle of Canada we've already got quite the wintry wonderland going. Hope the kids' costumes are big enough to put a snowsuit underneath! (Also oh dang, I was SO going to buy one of those "totally not my crimes" notebooks. But if distribution sucked that badly I can't blame you)
I don’t get people who brag about GOT so much. I’m a HUGE fan of the show but I always say it’s not for everyone 😭 Edit: hearing Simon say he would take his child to a doctor if they harmed themselves is actually so comforting. That’s absolutely the right move to make. Speaking as someone who’s parent did the right thing at the right time, it saved my life.
I think its because of the politics. I never thought of GOT as fantasy in the beginning. It wasnt until the end of the season that anything involved magic. So idu why he didnt like it. I know theres people who didn't like all the sex involved but honestly I think simon would actually fall in love with the characters.
@@jrmckim yes I always tell people to atleast get through the 1st season bc if you don’t know anything abt the universe it’s gonna be confusing for a little while!
@@jrmckim There was an Other/Wight Walker in the opening of the show lol. Literally the first scene involves a magical creature killing members of the Nights Watch.
Speaking of boardgames Simon, Settler's of Catan (plus all of its expansions) was awesome. I loved playing that and Risk with the boys back in the day. Man, good times.

I went to a convention and I got the full musical score to Once More With Feeling, and all kinds of Watchers Manuals etc etc.
I cannot wait to listen to the audible thing they made recently!
As a Buffy fan I have to disagree about the audio book. Just leave the series where it stands.
If Simon didn’t like Buffy, I was gonna stop listening to him.
I missed getting a notebook, I didn’t even know that they came out!! I want one!!
I don't care it's 11 months after this one aired, I am commenting.
I did not expect Simon to be ranting about how he likes Buffy and how Edward Cullen is weird, but I am here for it! ahaha!
Aww... I was really hoping to get one of those notebooks. I really need to write something down.
I wanted one of those notebooks so badly. I’m so depressed.
Those notebooks look amazing. You could possibly auction the notebooks for a charity as you did with your old blaze scripts.
Matt - I love your scripts. Kevin, I love yours too, and the pics from the Magic the Gathering ... gatherings (?) were cracking!
I feel like now basically everyone agrees child beauty pageants are just super creepy and should NOT be a thing, unless you're one of creeps putting your kids in them... Stop fucking up your kids!
(Edit: I also very much enjoy the term "edge lord" 🤣)
Those parents are a special kind of @&$?ed up
Says the people who think kids can change their sex lol
@@tiffanywyatt5137 No one wants your opinion on psychology. Thx.
@@mburton9253 lolol creep
Child beauty pageants are icky AF
You have extra cas crim journals??? 👀 Simon, I sure would pay for one
A CC about a Vampire Clan on Halloween. Well done.
I love how he puts the extra things in the stories
Thanks for the book plug! I enjoy Matt's scripts so much and I'm a massive fantasy fan so I've just bought it and look forward to reading it - thanks Matt! :)
You have never seen The Lost Boys??! It's a classic. It stars Keifer Sutherland, Cory Haim, and Corey Feldman. Highly recommend it.
Simon “the book was so hard to deal with it’s not worth it”
Also simon: “this is the coolest fucking book around and I have 100 left, but you can’t have any”
I know!! I remember when he was creating it and kept checking merch, and never could find it, now I know why😢 wanted to buy one so badly
Omg the fact that Simon brought up Buffy made my day. Im 23 and it hasnt been on air since i was a little kid. Its been my favorite show since I was 14
YOU ARE MAKING MY WEEK! Just pushing these videos out is bringing me great joy Sir Simon
They're not tangents, they're Viking Tales. Colorful, informative, entertaining and completely random ❤
You're entitled to *alllll* the shameless plugs Matt. And please, keep it up. I'll pick up your book when I can afford to do so. Which means shameless plug reminders are fantastic.
Simon would totally love Vampire the Masquerade, he could use his rules for crimes.
Had the most perfect ad break moment: at the point t Simon is saying “ he turned to her and in all seriousness said” the advert cut in with “I don’t have time for a healthy breakfast or lunch so I have been using Huel…”
Hilariously perfect timin.
Two Matt scripts in two days? He's on a roll. Great job to the CC fam.
Spelling mistake in the thumbnail lol. It's awesome we're getting back to back episodes, it makes work less boring whilst listening to Simon and his tangents
Unsure if mistaken but the thumbnail says 'Murers.'
Other than that, awesome, 2 videos in quick succession relatively.
A little proofreading would go a long way
😂 Worst ad placement! “He looked her in the eyes and said-“ “🎵Badahbadah🎵!”
It did come out on Halloween! Good job! Was so excited and suprised when i saw this video, clicked immediately. Hope everyone has a wonderfully spooky Halloween!
the ad cuts are always terribly hillarious;
took her to the graveyard, looked her directly in the eyes and said.... "I chose wix for my buisness"
I dont know if i love or hate these translations, they give me emotional whiplash
Wait- you AND That Chapter doing an episode on the same criminal?? This is cool! You two should do a crossover episode! Now THAT would be KILLER!!
Thanks so much for your work y’all
Stephanie Harlowe did it too,
You know, it happens some times with so many TC channels, especially with a Halloween episode. I love TC though so I'll probably watch that one after this.
William SRD also mentioned this story briefly on his video on one of the video games based on Vampire: The Masquerade that he released today.
When the topic of violent video games come up I always counter with “what game did Vlad the Impaler play again?”
I was wondering what ever happened with the notebooks. 😆 Not all parents are good, he had parents.
It's actually embarrassing how excited I get when Simon mentions Buffy the Vampire Slayer, it's my comfort show, I love it so much lol
I thought it was just me! I love Buffy and the Scooby Gang. I even listen to a podcast about rewatching Buffy. 😂
Thank you Simon and team. ❤
I would pay way more for one of those notebooks, you should have made them $50 and made all the money. The OGCC would still buy them
But Simon I WANT A JOURNAL ! I'VE been waiting for SO LONG
Matt coming back to back with these scripts like he’s Drake in 2015. I love this for him!!!
Woa woa woa wait, the notebooks *arrived*? Was this announced in any video? I never caught that! I wanted one!
Same.... I'm also shooketh at the revelation
Seeing a gif of Matt Mercer in the middle of a Cas Crim episode was a very strange crossing of the streams
I always hope at least ONE person will get a kick out of the random references I make lol
*Not mentioning "Last Vampire on Earth" the greatest vampire kino*
😂😂
First off!!! Happy Halloween to all my CC friends 👻 second!!! Another episode so fast!! This is the best way to end my day ☺ now gonna dive in and enjoy.. be well to everyone and thank you to the basement crew... ♥
I feel so much better hearing this. I found your channel earlier this year and wanted to buy a journal and couldn’t find them. I was upset cause I thought they sold poorly but if it was your mental health good for you. I have a couple therapy clients that I build rapport talking about your work so you and the whole team are amazing!!!!
This was just wonderfully written, Matt. ❤
I love everything y’all put out! Etou…. Typo in the thumbnail, though????
I remember reading a true crime book about this case a few years after it happened. They helped give us late 90's to early 2000's goth kids a bad rep. Most of us were just little oddballs befriending other oddballs and having fun.
And I still play VtM to this day.
Me too! I even own one of the old-school Ravnos pins. Such a fun game
When you said, don’t know who The Lost Boys are….. I died a little inside.
Omg Simon's killing it ....feeling so spoiled 2 glorious episodes in 2 days happy Halloween all and happy hunting 😂
Anyone feel like they new what was coming after the murder cop a couple back that the ones he mentions having scripts for then he's keeping us in suspense
As a kentucky native when simon said "wait why am i doing a british accent theyre from kentucky. YEEHAW" i started crying 😂
Thanks for making my nightshift less boring, good stuff Simon ✌🏼
I've watched stuff about this story a billion times but as with many episodes, I like hearing Simon tell me about it.. Thank you Simon and Thank you to your writers and Jen!! I APPRECIATE YOU ALL AND YOUR WORK. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!
I'd always been curious about the incident that prompted the guy who started a tabletop roleplaying game club back in high school to add a bit about being able to separate fantasy from reality to his little intro to TTRPGs during our first meeting.
I was excited when you started talking Buffy, but I was VERY impressed when you knew about the "remastered" problems
Look at this gorgeous notebook you can never own! 😅😭😭😭
Great job all. Would you guys cover the kids who killed that family in South Carolina from the rest stop maybe early 90s?
Also Pee Wee Gaskins, I grew up right near his haunts.
Two videos in two days woohoo!! Happy Halloween 🎃
id love a digital list of the rules i could paste it in my journal and pretend its one simon made lol i love the rules that make their appearance
Did Simon just go into a tangent from another tangent? Also: "born with super-charisma"? Sounds like Simon likes super powers after all, lol.
I have been wondering about the notebooks for so long! I wanted one so bad!!
Simon, you should consider giving The Lost Boys a go. A great 80's film. Campy vampire fun at its best. I know you are not a big film guy but I imagine you might enjoy it.
He’s BIG into films. Films are primarily what exists inside his memory.
Simon! Teasing us with that notebook!
Sell your notebooks for more! It really is a great idea.
@@mossomness I heard about that too! I was always too scared to go exploring in the more creepy and “haunted” parts of LBL, but it was tempting.
Well, you managed to get this out on exactly Halloween, well done Simon and team!
"Are they just born with the ability to be super charismatic?" Maybe it's Maybelline, Simon. Did you ever think of that?!
(Editor Chris here) There was an early cut of the video where as he says, "Are they just born with the ability to be super charismatic?" I actually cut to an old 90s Maybelline ad, but I thought the reference was too obscure, so I cut the joke out. Now I regret that decision hahaha
@@XtianzzyzxDefinitely would've gotten a laugh out of me. So that's at least 2 people who would've gotten it. 😂
The editing was On. Point! Also, i love Buffy, so hearing someone else talk about it made my night!
I WAS SO EXCITED!! Those of you who got a notebook, cherish that ish!
Damn it. I want one of those notebooks
STOP TEASING US WITH THE NOTEBOOKS, SIMON 😭😭
Welcome everyone to the CasCrim Halloween Spooktacular!
Yes he let me do a Halloween special, and yes this is two scripts of mine in a row! I’m so pleased right now! I hope you all enjoy and any comments and criticisms are welcome! Happy Halloween! 🎃🎃🧛🏻♂️🧛🏻♀️
(And yes, we did everything in our power to make sure this came out on Halloween!)
Nice work bud! Stoked we got this one out in time!
I watch all videos of CC and think you all do a fantastic job of bringing the stories to life while providing overall indepth information about the crimes and impacts to lives involved, keep up the brilliant work, love you guys (and gals)!!!😊😊😊😊
Thank you for sharing your talent with us! U r a God. 🙏
I have a suggestion have you heard of the Carnival Mafia Murders
Thank you Simon, and a happy Hallowe'en to you and all your viewers! This is a very nice treat, two episodes in a week. Hope you have a lovely late autumn with your family in Prague. Over here in the middle of Canada we've already got quite the wintry wonderland going. Hope the kids' costumes are big enough to put a snowsuit underneath! (Also oh dang, I was SO going to buy one of those "totally not my crimes" notebooks. But if distribution sucked that badly I can't blame you)
I don’t get people who brag about GOT so much. I’m a HUGE fan of the show but I always say it’s not for everyone 😭
Edit: hearing Simon say he would take his child to a doctor if they harmed themselves is actually so comforting.
@@PumpkinHoardI think they meant the earlier seasons had less magic.
The first couple of episodes and the last season were terrible but the in between were great.
Speaking of boardgames Simon, Settler's of Catan (plus all of its expansions) was awesome. I loved playing that and Risk with the boys back in the day. Man, good times.
The notebook is real? And we can’t get it? What horror is this!!!
Simon "He looked at her and said..."
RUclips ad: "tacos, burritos, quesadillas"
Me : 😲
