" I don't even think of myself as writing stylishly; I think of myself as trying to write with precision about what my mind's eye conjures up." Well his works were literally filled with style, His mind must have been amazing.
when he says that ernest hemingway was a priest, well i thought that was brilliant and agree one hundred percent. hemingway's voice in his writing is so prolific and holy and measures up to christ.
To me, there's something about Johns - Steinbeck, Updike, Williams. My holy trinity. In that order, as well. But then there's Jerome JOHN Garcia who hovers way above all other Johns.
his smile is so infectious

beautiful writer, beautiful man, truly great american artist
Thank you Mr. Updike for the beautifully
crafted work all these years.
You can tell from this interview what a nice person he was.😚
I studied his short story "A&P" at university..he was such a wonderful writer. RIP John Updike.
Thank you for this. What a literary genius.
I would have loved to chat with him at the local library table..he's a rare jewel found far and few these days..we miss you Updike.
That this man didn't win the Nobel Prize in Literature is disgraceful.
the swedes don't have any real writers or artists themselves, so are completely unqualified for judging such a thing.

What?
Greatest writer that has ever lived. He formed his own reality with words and a scalpel pen. You read and the world bleeds before your eyes.
#Tolstoy.

I really like this guy
God, I wish I had met this man.
A Truly Great Writer!
Why?
Smells like Updike in here
I've looked all over the internet, and cannot find any explanation, could you please explain what's Updike?
A colossus in my book...

Love his reference to Henry James, as well.
I wonder whatever became of that 1st century AD novel he was tinkering with at 3:45?

He's knowing
He doesn't say whether or not he disagrees with the notion that happiness is to be young, does he?
Why should he?
Sure he disagreed

thanks for this loved breakfast of champion
He should be remembered for the Rabbit tetralogy, Roger's Version and the short stories. The poems are surprisingly naff.
What a loss. I wonder if his novel is done?
Updike is not a favorite author of mine. Catch Patricia Lockwood's essay on Updike in the London Review of Books. It is excellent.
One of the most overly awarded writers I've ever read. Zero energy. just a bunch of word ballet.
Read the Rabbit Tetralogy and see if you still feel the same and daft way.
Just read it; a very good read, thanks.
She says some deeply complementary things about him however.
Screw her and all the cancel culture warriors.
