  • In this video, I'm sharing with love my journey to body acceptance and body confidence. It took me a long time to feel comfortable in my body. I’ve fluctuated over the years from a double zero to a size 10 and I remember being so embarrassed and ashamed of that. I wish I was kinder to myself because I am only human but I thought models were meant to be a 00 and stay a 00. I was always hesitant to talk about body positivity or body diversity because I am aware being a size 6 or 8 is nothing ground breaking but in the modeling industry, my size hasn’t always been represented, celebrated or accepted. For me, feeling comfortable in my skin has taken a lot of work and effort and I wanted to share that with you guys. ❤️

i love that you mention over-exercising because taken an extreme, it can be equally as dangerous as ed’s 💔

I love seeing you two talk about this! As someone who has suffered from an eating disorder, hearing about body image issues from others is so helpful. I do just wanna say, although overexercising can be extremely harmful, it’s not exactly the same as the psychological and physical havoc an eating disorder can wreak. The scariest health effects come from restriction and purging. These are mental illnesses with a genetic component and they are so hard to come back from. It’s hard to equate such a debilitating illness with simply overexercising (which I agree, can be super dangerous). Not trying to attack or discount any experiences. We all need to start a conversation. There is a distinction to be made though. Lots of love! Xx

Makes me wonder how we should view the talents of these designers if they're only able to make clothes look good on a very specific body type. If a designer is unable to make clothing that make the average woman look beautiful, or if they think the average woman can't fully represent their image of some dress, maybe THEY'RE the ones who need to change their designs instead of demanding the models to mold themselves into an unhealthy shape.

When I feel bad about myself, I just think of me in the future, let's say 80 years old (with another body, another skin and surely some health issues) looking at a picture of me of today saying "Gosh, look how good I looked at that time! Why did I waste my time counting defects?". Then, magically, all the negativity thoughts go away. Let's appreciate what we are and what we have today. Thanks for sharing this, Emily. Kisses.

Thanks for this video. It’s so sad that a size 6 on a taller woman is considered “bigger” in today’s society. I was a size 5/6 in high school but because i’m tall (5’9) with long proportions, people actually thought I looked like a size 2/3 in real life. It’s still a very thin size for a tall, longer legged woman. I would have had to starve myself silly to get into a size 2. That size was pretty much made for a petite, small boned women. Cindy Crawford said that a size zero didn’t even exist in her modeling days. The smallest was a 2, and even then that was usually a petite woman’s size, not a tall girls. Most 90s models were a size 4-6/7. I hate that society is the one who put the pressures on. That’s why almost every person outside of the fashion world still thinks the 90s models were the best. Emily totally could have been one!

    • @anewchapter1336
      @anewchapter1336 3 года назад

I completely agree and I am petite. In high school I wore a size 2/4 and now (thirty years later) I only weigh five pounds more, yet even some size zeros are too big. This all happened because of the modeling industry. Am I to need negative sizes now? I have to get most clothes altered now for an accurate and flattering fit. It's really a shame that women of different shapes and sizes and health in general are not celebrated in this industry. It made me sad to hear how a beautiful and healthy young woman with a perfect body such as Emily was made to feel inadequate, but at least she was able to overcome what happened to her.

    • @ezramillie1345
      @ezramillie1345 3 года назад +2

You have to take into consideration that a size 4 and 6 back then wasn't the same as now. Today, clothing manufacturers are often using “vanity sizing,” the labeling of clothes with sizes smaller than the actual cut of the items. So a size 4 or 6 in the 70's does NOT have the same measures as today. Don't fool yourself, high fashion models were always extremely skinny since the 50's

  • @nurandanac8507

Wow it is so interesting to see this issue coming from a very succesful model. I had struggled with my body image for all these years although I was probably nothing of a model material I used to receive compliments from people(sometimes from complete strangers) on my looks yet it made me feel good about myself for a few hours and then I went back to dislike the way I looked. I hated my photos and thought I looked horrid in each and every one of them. Now I am 30, looking through my old photos and all I can think is how stupid I was! I looked perfectly fine! It was all in my head.. Wish I hadn’t been this harsh on myself at all..

Designers used to have personal relationships with the models, they were heavily involved in the casting. Most of them have outsourced that part of the job so they no longer care about the models. Now you have designers like Riccardo Tisci complaining to his casting directors that the models they proposed are all too fat.

I am your age and I have been living with an incurable and deadly disease for almost two years now. I also had so many insecurities about my body. Now I try to look at it with gratitude, because, despite everything, it resists.
Obviously it's not easy looking at myself sometimes.
Please 🙏 when you are not happy with your mirror image, when you dwell on too much or too little weight that you have, or complain about your waist, or thights or height, think about what your body allows you to do. Breathing, walking, running, jumping, dancing, laughing ... living.
Love your body, nourish it, strengthen it and be grateful of it.

Thank you for sharing your story Emily! I've struggled with Anorexia in my teens as a result of someone calling me fat in high school and now that I am an adult, - married and with a kid I still feel pressured to look a certain way. I tried modeling in my 20s and now a flight attendant. I've always been skinny but people can sometimes be too cruel that if you don't look like them they try to make you feel that there's something wrong with you. I am 5'7 and 110 pounds. I worked out regularly and eat healthy. I can say I am a fit mom and I like looking and feeling healthy. My husband loves the way I look. But most of the time I get mean comments from women who are not like my size telling me " you're too skinny, you look like you're sick " and discouraging me to work out . I feel bad whenever I hear it just because I don't have curves like them I don't deserve to feel good about myself or something. Like you, I started just turning off the voices that's not helping me love myself. Women have different body types. And I believe that at the end of the day, it's what you think about yourself that matters most. As long as you're happy with how you look and feel great about it , you don't need to fit into other's perception of what it beautiful.
Always loving your videos! Take care. God bless u!

Emily, it took me over 10 minutes to re-write this comment as I struggled to piece together the words that could pull together my personal experience, which I’m certain countless other women and young girls have gone through or faced at some point in their life, as well as the gratitude I have towards you making this video and just, YOU. We need more women like you, sharing their personal struggles and stories, shining light on important issues that modern women come across, bettering and even saving lives. I guess I settled on just a short message that I hope acts as a thank you. Thank you thank you thank you, Emily.

Thank you! You know people think that models always are confident. Let me share my story- I almost always been size 8-10, then I got +5 kg and couldnt get rid of it, I wasnt fat (10-12 size) but I was obsessed with loosing weight. And nobody understand me, everybody just say- you are OK, why do you want to loose weight? And for me it was like a torture- thinking about it, like you said -24/7. Now Im OK with my size 8-10, and I feel good about myself. But those two years of hate about my body was awful.

damn! now that you showed those old photos of you, I remember seeing you in ads. for some reason my brain didn't connect that you are that same girl! it's hard to imagine that an industry would try to change someone as beautiful as you. i've never been very interested in the modeling industry but it's been very interesting to see your take on these issues and other parts of everyday life! keep up the videos :D

Besides the modelling thing, this is so relatable. I've been really skinny and I was never satisfied, it didn't make me happy. I had a huge wake up call when I was ill and lost more weight than ever (I plateaud) and my mind told me that I could lose even more if I started throwing up my food. But a at the same time, I was like NO this isn't who you are. I stopped obsessing and I don't allow myself to stand on the scale or measure myself. It brings nothing good for my mental health. I work out, eat healthy and allow myself treats and I still have areas where I feel self conscious about, but I have accepted that I can't change it in the moment and it's better to accept reality than beat yourself up over it.
Getting older and wiser has many benefits 😅
    Thanks for sharing Emily!

This video was almost too relatable! I'm glad that instead of continuing to hold off on watching it, I painted my nails through it and just absorbed it. Growing up I wanted to model so badly but am only 5' 7" barely and I've always had the body for it (and the face according to my s/o) BUT I just couldn't see it myself. Consistent comparing of myself to these new faces on magazine covers has destroyed my self-image over the years and while I look awesome, some days it's really just impossible to understand.
I'm glad my mom never let me go farther past being scouted twice because I would've ended up with worse dysphoria than I struggle with now. It's a shame how this industry just sucks in girls, chews them up, and spits them out. And it's more of a shame that I've for a long time recognized that and STILL struggled with not wanting to model.

I have literally become a model because of Emily. I always thought that she must be so happy with all the success she experiences that she has no idea what rejection really means, that she was a born model that knows nothing but winning. This video is so so inspiring and important for young girls that join the industry (or not) and believe that happiness only comes in a certain package /weight/ image . Thank you Emily for put this out for the world to see that there is success, happiness and joy in more than just a certain clothing size!!!!!!

I have an eating disorder but I had anorexia from 13-19 but I loved Emily in the georgio Armani Aqua do Goioa advert and I was obsessed with wanted to look like you because I thought you were perfect (you still are) and I bought the perfume and worked out really hard etc. I was offered to model for models1 and I declined after years of wanting to be one because I read how much it was tearing these young woman apart! Now I still struggle definitely but I'm so proud of you Emily for being honest and speaking out as I looked up to VS models etc and every year would watch the show and then I said last time no! These girls are unhealthy and being pushed to be a certain way. I love you Emily ❤️ and thank you cause I think like when I was younger you think models are having the best time.

What’s more important than being a top model is being a top role model & you excel at both.
I’m not a model & can’t fathom the pressure models go through to look a certain way, but while I’m thin & lucky to be so, I survey every inch of my skin & convince myself I am bigger than I am. I’ll be sitting on a couch & my stomach feels huge or talking to someone & feel like they’re thinking of my size. What takes me out of it is thinking of how big whatever room I’m in is & how small I am compared to that. Then I think of how big the building is & eventually I lead my way to how big the world is & how many big problems it contains & then I’m reassured my body isn’t one of them. I don’t know when I started doing this or why, but it helps every single time when my mind is spiraling down a not-so-good path.
Thank you for this video, Emily! We all love you!

Thank you so much for putting yourself out there and telling your story, you really made me feel better about myself and body confidence. I also have always wondered why there is little space for sizes 4-10 in the modeling industry. I am a healthy girl, I listen to my body, eat when I am hungry, nourish my body with real, healthy food, and workout to build muscle and feel my very best. I would like you to do a video on tips for modeling as a size 4-8 girl! :)

Emily, thanks for sharing this. I went to Sullivan West high school and played against you in basketball years ago! I’ve been following you since and am very proud youre another sporty upstate New Yorker! I’m also a size 6, 5’11 and 150lbs. I’ve gotten “you should model” countless times but always respond “id have to lose 30 pounds”. It’s only made me more obsessed with what I eat. How do you enjoy a glass of wine or a not-so-healthy meal and not feel guilty? Guilt is my issue! I see models posting drinking margaritas etc and I’m like how?!

Confidence truly isn't something that all of us are born with, it's something that one needs to build gradually especially when it comes to body image. So thank you so so much Emily for breaking the barriers especially coming from a model like you. Lots of love ❤️😍💋

I believe your on to something kiddo. :O) I shared the quote on my FB & Instagram about "Be careful how you talk to yourself because your listening." So awesome!! Your comments regarding we're not necessarily perfect for everyone. Spot on!! Thanks for the honesty in mentioning that your a size 6, and have at times been sent home because you didn't fit into the clothes. Bless your heart girl...because size 6 for your height and wt. is healthy and very athletic. Lastly, thank you for mentioning that self love has to be a constant daily, weekly mantra. Thank you for sharing this. I literally broke down to tears, because of how much I relate to this. I’m not a fat person but I’ve been hating the way I look for years now and always comparing myself with my friends and other people. I’ve always suffered at times when I go to the beach instead of enjoying, all because I’ve never been confortable in a bikini, and I never enjoy those trips because I feel like I can’t eat or drink a thing because I’m even more aware of my body. It’s nice to hear that there are many people out there feeling this way, even when they’re insanely good looking models!
Keep working on that positivity because you’ve come so far! And always remember you’re beautiful!

I'm 60 years old, never been a model, never been a size 6 either. It's sooo sad to know that you struggle with body image. 90% of American women are bigger than you are and most of them look great. I struggle with depression which causes me issues like "I wouldn't look good even if I were a size 6 or 4 or 00 anyways, so why bother". Time flies so my advice to you is please please know how truly beautiful you are and you're 3 dimensional not a picture in a magazine.

    You're a breath of fresh air! 🙏❤
I have dealt with the same negative self-talk about my overall appearance. When I was 15, I went to John Cassablanca modeling school. I thought modeling would help me learn to appreciate my body, or at least take care of it so I could. Back then, I was 100 lbs at 5'4". Too short, too big (which was shocking because I had always been called a toothpick by others). So for me, the external criticism made my negative self-talk worse. Over the years I have learned to accept myself, but at 44 years old, I still struggle. I think as women we will always deal with negative thoughts about our appearance because of the mold society tries to fit us into. But I like how you said you judo those thoughts by telling yourself "you don't have time for this." It's amazing how a little redirection can change the entire day! Keep doing what you do, inspiring other women with your realness. I come to your channel often for skincare tips, but felt the need to comment on this and say what a beautiful soul you are!!

"Judo Chopping" made my day!! Respect Emily, you're a great person and for me still the most beautiful, size 6, 7 or 8! I was shocked when you told that agencies say you're too big for some jobs..and this make me think...This Industry Is not so understood by people are not in, we just see pictures, covers, and could be interesting and helpfull to understand and discover what Is behind It. Maybe some standards are definite by a specific period or "wave". Could be interesting to explain differents sides about this world that affects so many people and could give us good or unfortunately bad intensions specially for all the girls who wants to became a model.
    Keep Going! You're Great.

Great way to show support to a lot of kids out there!!!! If you ever come to Europe during the summer for vacation...mainly in Spain...you will notice that the majority of the women that are doing top less or going to a nudist beach ( very common practice here in Europe) are older women! And that for its self makes me admire them so much...there’s a point in life ( if you allow it to happen ) you come to peace with your body and with yourself! And it’s a stage that you could do it earlier in your life it’s a matter of paying attention to the way that you’re building your self awareness and if you’re seeking for external validation ( in whatever matter in your life ) you’re just complicating the process...don’t take life too serious because it’s not taking you seriously either...be happy (not 24/7, no one is) be positive, don’t be so hard on yourself, love the ones that lives and have fun!
P.s: Emily is a great opportunity that models now have their own platform to change this reality...but most of them just want to show the glam part of it ( which is cool) but it not all about that...hope we see more models stepping up to this field...
