- SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg changed the world. With SpongeBob thriving now more than ever before, a large group of students, the SpongeBob cast, and even Hillenburg's family, came out to celebrate his life and everything he brought.
It's important to keep Stephen Hillenburg's legacy alive, no matter what. SpongeBob has brought joy to countless fans around the world, but none of that would've been possible without the mind behind the character. As the years continue, let's look back and appreciate what he gave.

Hard to believe this Friday will be 3 years since we lost Stephen Hillenburg.
He is truly an animation legend who created an animated icon. I don't think Steve knew how much of a global phenomenon SpongeBob would be, or how much of an impact the little square dude has made on so many people, when he first created him. We all have Steve to thank for literally making all of this possible.

I love how even on my worst days, he brightened up my mood by providing SpongeBob to us. A nice way to escape from reality at times. A forever legend in my opinion that will never be forgotten.

Many felt that post-2004 movie, the quality dipped significantly.
It hit seasonal rot. Sure it dishes out some decent episodes now and then, but it’s painfully obvious it’s heyday is long over.
Hillenburg should get on the walk of fame. People like seth mcfarlane, mister rogers and matt groening all have stars for making some of the longest running shows that also had huge impacts on people. I don't see why hillenburg shouldn't get one.

If I remember correctly, Stephen preferred to avoid the spotlight; he was a humble guy. I can see the opportunity to be on the walk of fame being presented to him, and he probably wasn't interested.

This is so heartwarming. Those kids must be so proud that the creator of SpongeBob went to their high school. He definitely deserves a memorial because his legacy will live on for generations to come.

Man, it's been 3 years since his passing, and yet, it's still heartwarming to see people honor his legacy and how he made a massive impact on all of us. Thank You, Stephen Hillenburg, for not only making our childhoods memorable but for creating the face of nick, the most famous and longest-running nicktoon of all time and one of the most recognizable cartoon characters out there. You truly will be missed and remembered for your creativity. RIP, fellow legend.

This guy was LITERALLY my childhood. I would not love animation as much as I do if it weren't for Stephen Hillenburg and SpongeBob. This was such a beautiful way to honor him and his legacy. My little brother and I grew up loving Spongebob. It was our favorite show growing up and the first and only show we could both love and agree on no matter what. We quoted it to each other. The last thing I gave my brother was Spongebob socks before he past away earlier this month. This is beautiful. This is exciting
I used to watch SpongeBob a lot when I was child, I watched it everyday and makes me happy. All thanks to Stephen Hillenburg, these cartoons and animations gives me nostalgia and it made my childhood better. I wasn’t even a child when this show started, but it was everything good and wonderful to me! I felt like this show was visually and comically everything I loved about Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network at the time. My late teens/early 20s into my 30s were spent watching this beautiful show. It holds so much Nostalgia. I still choke up thinking that the creator passed away so young.
There will never be another cartoon like SpongeBob no matter how many reboots or spin offs they do it will never be the same Stephen made so many childhoods fun

When I heard he passed I cried. SpongeBob is one of my favorite cartoons of all times. It got me through some really dark times especially after I lost both my mom and dad when I was little. I still go back and watch just to remember all the good times that made me laugh
