Three thoughts: I don’t see that fear-wise, it makes a whole lot of difference whether it’s 2000’ or 200’; but the physical exhaustion of 2000’ would take a toll that doesn’t necessarily come through in a video, leaving limbs that much less coordinated as the climb up, and then down, proceeds. The coordinated movement of harness and carabiners with hands makes sense, but I’d be nervous (especially when going through the cloudy section) about a boot slipping as I climb to a new step. Which brings me to the third point: I can see there’s good redundancy in how the safety harness is attached on both sides, minimizing risk of sideways slippage, but I’d be interested to see how one recovers after any sort of problem where one is left dangling from one of those straps. I’m certain it can be done, just curious about how precarious the recovery process is.

@@TheBBbandit Seems quite small though, the carabiner he's using on them looks thicker than the end cap. Feels like it would be a bit too possible for it to hop over that bump if you fell.
i second that choice, but no bloody way i go up there the hand rails do look sake whats stopping the karabina from falling off the climming pegs why does someone make it so dangerous
The navy put a lanyard brake system on all radar and flag mast on us navy vessels. It consist of a narrow pole (2 inch diameter) the entire lenght of the mast with teeth along the front edge going upward (think of a car hoist mishap prevention system). Whenever you climb upwards, you push this brake up along this pole as well it is attached to a lanyard, thst is attached to your harness. In the event that you slip off a ladder step/peg, the braking system will take your weight preventing one from falling to death.. This hook only on peg contraption is a deathwish in the making..
You’re only half right. Scaffold hooks are industry standard fall arrest. You use them in pairs so you’re always attached. However they’re designed to be a closed loop, using them on open pegs instead of their being an installed wire track is a death wish.
This is what I was thinking. Sure, you always have one on and for a brief moment you're double-connected, but these COULD bounce right off the side when you uncontrollably fall. This looks like it gives you a false sense of security when in reality there's a good chance your safety line will come undone.
That's why there is the protruding piece on the end of the step. Keeps the safety harness loops from slipping off. Besides, it's not like they're at an angle.
Summit X makes sense, for some reason I thought there harnesses were attached at the sides , not at a narrow point. I don’t even know how they trust these small pegs or any of the connections up there to stand on
I went up a 1,500 foot tower in Missouri City, TX with my Dad a few times. He was big into Ham radio and he was the designated maintenance guy for the repeater for their amateur radio club. Ever time it needed work, he would ride a rickety little elevator up the middle of the tower to get to a platform at the top. It took about 20 minutes. I don’t think he would have been interested in climbing though. This takes guts and endurance.
Which companies do I need to apply with to get this job to make $80,000 in a year? I only have to work two months out of the year. Please somebody answer me.
And I thought the dude in South Dakota was badass for climbing that 1500 foot tower to change the bulb for $20,000 per climb. This guy went up 500 more feet. Wow
Can I ask a question? My friend and I are arguing about the safety of this job, whether we can prevent unnecessary accidents as long as we take sufficient precautions
Typically towers that tall have an elevator that takes you most of the way. I never realized Towers of that height existed, because you can ever really get close to them. You always see them at a distance. But my company did some work at one of those sites a few years ago, on a tower like that one, 2000 feet tall and it was amazing to see just how tall it was standing at the bottom of it. And the fact that there was an elevator that took you to the top was really cool.
Mike V 2000 feet on a stair climber at the gym takes about 45 minutes... that is totally nonstop with gym clothes. Now add 50 lbs of equipment and two anchors you have to raise with each step.... THEN add the large object you have to straddle during the entire ascent... OMG... I’d recommend paying for a helicopter ride to the top then a parachute ride to the bottom.

Tony Montana Yes, they are and I only know they gym as it relates to this job. This job is much harder than the gym. That’s what I was trying to articulate in my comment.
The tower has an elevator that goes about 50-75% of the way up. It’s required, also the structure has to have a sturdy and strong foundation to support such a tall tower, therefore having enough clearance for an elevator for servicing

Are they jumping with parachutes to get down? Or are they climbing down the old fashion way? I'd think, that jumping would be more efficient. And you can do 2 of them a day, instead of 1. Also, how much money they get per climb? I'd imagine around 1.000 USD.
used to work in a building that had aircraft warning lights, high voltage strobes (like the one in this video) and low intensity red lights like you see on top of tall buildings. changing the type of light in the fixture was not as easy as just switching the bulb, the building would've been required to jump through regulatory hoops with the aviation authority, pay fees, have inspections, etc. it was cheaper and easier to just keep using regular old incandescent bulbs and pay someone to go change them.

The ends are thicker than the handhold poles themselves, so even if they go on loose, if someone falls, theyll pull in the direction the person is falling, so they wouldnt slip off the end but instead be caught by the rim of the cap

So when you fall straight down beside the tower how exactly do you think it will open?
You would wish you weren't carrying that parachute after about 100 feet. That would be a lot of extra weight to carry.
my concern would be hitting the guy wires......
Tony Fisher you’re a fucking idiot. Seriously.
I have a 1000 skydives. Watching this video makes my knees weak. My hats off to these people.
Watching aircraft land on aircraft carriers is amazing and terrifying
You’re only half right. Scaffold hooks are industry standard fall arrest. You use them in pairs so you’re always attached. However they’re designed to be a closed loop, using them on open pegs instead of their being an installed wire track is a death wish.
This is what I was thinking. Sure, you always have one on and for a brief moment you're double-connected, but these COULD bounce right off the side when you uncontrollably fall. This looks like it gives you a false sense of security when in reality there's a good chance your safety line will come undone.
@@aaronanderson6958 "good chance your safety line will come undone"
Extremely unlikely, but there are better ways to clip in.
Looks like those hooks would slip off the pegs
That's why there is the protruding piece on the end of the step. Keeps the safety harness loops from slipping off. Besides, it's not like they're at an angle.
if one happens to hop over the end of that little bulge you'd be fucked
Summit X makes sense, for some reason I thought there harnesses were attached at the sides , not at a narrow point. I don’t even know how they trust these small pegs or any of the connections up there to stand on
The protruding piece on the end doesn’t look big enough it should be wayy wider, it looks like it could jump over it easily.

Big salute for that tower builders🙏
I went up a 1,500 foot tower in Missouri City, TX with my Dad a few times. He was big into Ham radio and he was the designated maintenance guy for the repeater for their amateur radio club. Ever time it needed work, he would ride a rickety little elevator up the middle of the tower to get to a platform at the top. It took about 20 minutes. I don’t think he would have been interested in climbing though. This takes guts and endurance.

Does any one realize that the safety harness is useless because it can slip off the steps???

2000 feet on a stair climber at the gym takes about 45 minutes... that is totally nonstop with gym clothes. Now add 50 lbs of equipment and two anchors you have to raise with each step.... THEN add the large object you have to straddle during the entire ascent... OMG... I’d recommend paying for a helicopter ride to the top then a parachute ride to the bottom.

Make sure you install a LED bulb so you don't have to go up there so often.
But that kind of goes against job security
used to work in a building that had aircraft warning lights, high voltage strobes (like the one in this video) and low intensity red lights like you see on top of tall buildings. changing the type of light in the fixture was not as easy as just switching the bulb, the building would've been required to jump through regulatory hoops with the aviation authority, pay fees, have inspections, etc. it was cheaper and easier to just keep using regular old incandescent bulbs and pay someone to go change them.
He does it every 6 months and makes twenty k off it each time.
