      I started replaying it after they announced D4 would be more to the tone of D2. There's a lot I do like about D2, but I am quite often frustrated by limitations of the engine. Getting caught on corners, lights, etc. Lightning bolts being "blocked" by pillars which aren't directly in the path. Merc's being stupid and always walking through poison clouds, getting stuck, lost.
      That said, I played it from release up until D3's release, and it is a good game. I do miss that tone, that "feel". I miss hearing dialog that's not made in a cheese factory. I miss the skill system, leveling up a skill rather than progression being soley about gear and paragon.

    • @clublulu399
      @clublulu399 4 года назад +4

      @Username In case you're unaware, there's a reason why Diablo 2 differs from Diablo 3 in many aspects, lore, and gameplay just to name a couple. It is because the core team (Blizz North) behind the original Diablo series (1 & 2) left partway through the design & development of Diablo 3 in 2005, and a team (Blizz South) with an entire different mindset took over and started development from complete scratch, resulting in the Diablo 3 you see today. The lore is completely unexpected, the game lacks the look and feel of what honestly all of us had expected when Diablo 3 was first announced. The loot system is garbage, Auction House, and "Loot 2.0" to name a couple. Where is the awesome random level generator we're so familiar with in D2? Oh wait, non existent. I've played both versions of the game, and there's a reason I keep crawling back to the Diablo 2 series. It's just that D3 holds your hand in so many ways it's honestly insulting to a veteran Diablo player. I can keep rambling but thought I'd stop there. Hope that was enough substance for ya..

    Imo, at its current state, the art looks too dull. They were right about D2 having colour when they talked about the D3 art direction, except D3 just took it in the wrong direction. Lighting is too balanced in D3. Now, D4 seems to be going in the opposite direction. I think they need to up the contrast, make the shadows sharper and lighting a little harsher, and bring out some colours. I think Dark Souls and DS3 have more D2 feel to them in terms of colour and lighting. This looks like higher res D3 with different colour palette to me. And I know it never will happen anymore because the game will come out on consoles too, but I miss the camera being a little further away!

    The more I think about it, the more certain I am that I genuinely just want D2, with the engine/physics shown here, new items/classes/story and all that stuff... but keep the progression how it is, keep the skill trees (new skills of course), keep itemization the same (runewords, god tier uniques, randomly op rares, etc), keep difficulty scaling the same. I genuinely don't think they can outdo the character building and itemization of D2, D2 just does it the best by a landslide IMO. They could genuinely just stick to the D2 recipe (with _small_ tweaks/improvements), release it with a fresh engine and new classes/items/bosses, and repeat every few years.. and I'd buy it every time.

    The entire game depends on the loot engine. The reason D2 is so good is the treasure class system. This is the key to replayability. You have to be able to farm specific areas for a chance at getting a rare item. Period. And it has to be rare as hell. Llama also mentions charms, which are key to customization. The point is, we want a grindy ARPG with loot rewards that are difficult to obtain, and skill choices that matter. It has to be a long term game....the type of game you grind for months to find the perfect items.

      Replayability was the downfall of d3. It just felt the same when switching builds. Then getting forced into whatever is the best build because the others don't compete. Kinda light having to pick between a super heavy weight Mike Tyson and a woman in the flyweight division.

    • @vagabondwastrel2361
      @vagabondwastrel2361 4 года назад

      @j. d. You are right and wrong. There is some of the mmo mentality but it is enough to just play for a little at a time hunting for waypoints or just doing mfing. The main difference is diablo 2 had meaningful choices. You could pick a build that was easier in the early game but harder in the late game. If you try hard enough you can skill kill the bosses.
      Diablo 3 differs because the choices are all made for you with the current meta and normalized weapons. Rifts felt more grindy to me than spamming baal runs for some reason. It probably has something to do with enchants on mobs mattering more than the mob types.
      All of these are still not quite mmo because to me the mmo is exemplified by the end game pve content that requires large parties to kill. The hard content that requires everyone to be on point. No matter how high you get in diablo 2 you can still die unexpectedly. Diablo 3 is a hell of a lot more grindy in it's fights that progressively take longer and longer to kill the same mobs. Rifts literally reward you by taking longer to kill the same mobs.
      The loot system in diablo 2 is much better... even if it could be improved. It allows for you to have a flavor. You can pick weapon types and speeds. the itemization in d3 all it really matters is if you are 1h or 2h or dual wield. Their fix to the auction house did waayy more harm than it did good. If they were not losing money on the auction house I wish they didn't remove it. Then all they had to do to keep the auction house relevant and not stagnated is give items more durability but have that durability max reduce over time with usage. That would have fixed the main flaw of diablo 3. The lack of community... or even the need for a community. In it's current state it is a single player game you have to play online.

    • @ScorchHellfire
      @ScorchHellfire 4 года назад +3

      I feel the exact opposite. D2 felt slow and clunky in its mechanics. Having to walk most of the time and play inventory tetris was lame. After playing through the campaign a couple of times, I couldn't even bring myself to get all the different classes through normal before becoming disinterested. However, when D3 came out I played only that for many hours each day for 2 weeks straight and eventually played through the campaign several times with each class before RoS came out and then hundreds of hours on each character in Adventure mode and Rifts thereafter. Playing through the same story and zones in the same, slow way over and over is boring, even with more randomized areas. Being forced to do so to even try different builds (that you could easily screw up permanently) is even worse. D3 destroys D2 for replayability even with it's flawed endgame and itemization and despite the freely changable skills. I'd rather grind for and save up different items to try and maximize different skill builds in higher and higher difficulties than grind a new character every time I want to switch things up. That sounds awful to me. Then again, I also never really played alts in WoW back in the day and prefer to keep progressing with my original characters without having to start over and reset multiple times. Leveling isn't compelling replayability to me unless the leveling process itself is very compelling, but in most games the late game is far more so and I'd rather spend my time there. And the item grind is only fun if the core gameplay remains fun, and it doesn't if it's too much endless grinding of the same stuff. Which is also why I don't play D3 anymore either. I sincerely hope they fix this with these Dungeon Keys and whatever else they're doing for the D4 endgame.

    Been playing D2 for almost 20 years and D3 for some months, things I would change of this D4 gameplay:
    - Option to fade the map in the center of the screen or in a side, that minimap is little help.
    - Bigger inventory items, wanna see items closer.
    - Skill trees. We need to choose from more skills choosing 6 out of 15 isnt enough. More skill trees means deeper char customization. That means you CREATE your own char. Choosing 20 skills among 60 is great. Also forcing to choose wich skills you wont use is great. Having all skills would be lame.
    - Complex runewords mechanic. Having to choose just a pair of runes to add an effect is waaaaaay not enough. Every D2 player will tell you runes and runewords are 50% of the game meaning and goal. We played to get that rare runes drop and making a 4 5 6 runewords after looking them for 2 weeks WAS the game by itself. ¿Why would anyone get rid of this unique D2 succes feature?
    - Spell cooldowns... As a player of PoE Im used to cooldowns too but Im not a big fan. Better mechanic ever is cast/hit speed based on fcr and ias ¡Bring back fcr and ias! With cooldowns action will be just as any other arpg out there 😕.
    -Conclusion: We want all things that were a big succes in D1(dark atmosphere) D2(fcr ias and runes) D3(big and epic bosses) + next gen graphics and light effects. Diablo doesnt really need to add a lot of new features to de great again. Just use what worked well in the past and add better graphics.

The mainquesting should feel really rewarding. Like a lvl up or a unique item for reward like d2 did. They should feel personal and like ur really making a difference to the npcs of sanctuary (getting the hammer for charsi or saving deckard cain from the cage).. hate the blue ghost ingame sequences of d3. If anything they pull me out of the immersion by showing things that happened to other people, some other time. Do something to our character or friendly npcs in the moment instead. Have our character be a bigger part of the story... I didnt like the dialogs with boss antagonists of d3. These are monsters and demons were fighting. They should treat us like food for the most part. I also didnt like being a demigod nephalem special chosen one. This was all possible on the journey to powering up and how far you went with it was your decision.
    I'm not saying a replica of this is required for D4, but I think some inspiration from this would work wonders.

    It's gonna be tough appealing to the D2 crowd :) The loot does not feel special at all. In D2, even low level sets and uniques have substance about them, the stats, the art work, the names... Watching sequels of the game makes me appreciate the sheer detail about D2 even more. The music and build options is also a huge aspect of D2. As Llama said, there is plenty of room for improvement, yet there are also key elements to emulate as strictly as possible to make D4 a keeper. Who are the guys who worked on item creation for D2? Sure, runewords made a whole bunch of unique items obsolete in the game which is a shame considering how much work was put into creating them in the first place... But then RW were also very well integrated. Despite a definite imbalance (at the fair cost of being very difficult to find) , it was a new element that remained well within the impeccable structure of the game. FHR, FCR, MF%, FRW, CB, DS/CS, OW, auras... Incredible attention to detail in the item mods. As it stands with the current D4 demo, aside from obvious aesthetic improvements, I really like the idea of a much larger map and would appreciate well contrasted landscapes with mobs to suit (D2 acts worked great but D4 could streamline it better as a single map that evolves as you explore the territory and background music needs to follow suit...another core element of D1/D2 feel). I'd say get rid of damage numbers popping up all over and as someonw in the comments mentioned, health bars as well unless you scroll over the specific element. It clutters up the screen and disrupts immersion, as does the glow-upon-hitting effect. A bit more colour would be welcome to highlight world design which is convincing enough so far. Work on the sound effects associated with item use, equipped/removed from char/inventory, whether it be weapons, armour, runes, pots or scrolls... Game mechanics/animation looks fine, just lacks the soundtrack and immersive feel due to too many on-screen distractions. Watching the demo like this definitely won't help though, I get that. Background blizzcon noise etc... Just remember that no amount of pretty graphics can make up for lack of substance and I think D2 nailed the devil in the detail. Would be really cool working on this project :)

      @@BmoreGaming This is a very 2d interpretation of Ultimate skills. You comment seems to assume that your ultimate is just a bigger normal attack. Sometimes this is the case, however there are different skill types besides dmg, buffs, debuffs, movement skills, all of which can benefit from being supercharged into a stronger or 'ultimate' ability.
      You also have to weigh up CD on ultimate's. It's just a different way of getting power on command instead of power over time from standard style skills.
      One could also argue that the final skills in many D2 class trees were precursor ultimates, many had CD's and did extreme damage, in this case the only thing that's changed is the label on said skills from 'skill' to 'ultimate'.

    If you don't have cooldowns, you'll end up spamming your most buffed up skill through the entire game, just like in Diablo 2 and Path of Exile. There's a huge amount of enemies near you, you spam your Q (or 1) since it's your most damaging spell. If there's one single boss in front of you, you just spam your Q (1) because it's your most damaging skill.
    With cooldowns, it's possible to balance out the damage that you will be using lots of skills instead of just the one that is your highest damaging spell, the one spell that you've specced into. It worked amazingly for Diablo 3, before they started making items that buff one specific skill like, 400 %. Then it turned into just spamming your one skill every time. Speccing into using one skill is fine, but if the damage of that skill makes all other skills obsolete, the combat turns into; Use skill number 1, use skill number 1, use mobility skill, use skill number 1, etc...
    All in all, it's a matter of balancing out the items, but if there are no cooldowns, it's impossible to do. Earthquake with a 2 minute cooldown should ALWAYS do more damage than a skill you can spam, it gives the player much more options what to use.

    The mechanics of D2 was so intricate and customizable. There are so many things one needs to understand to enjoy the game fully. For example, regarding the loot system you need to consider item level, area level, monster level, mf%, treasure classes etc.
    And when it comes to combat system, unlike D3 and 4 which where “damage” is all that matters, in D2 you really had to consider the likes of attack rating, defense, resistances, block chance, and your character level vs monster level etc.
    It just feels like Blizzard is targeting the younger audience of this generation, which needs everything spoon fed to them.
