I know this video doesn't cover exact details and tell you everything to do, because it's very hard to do that for this. The standard pieces are: 1. Level up. Be at least low to mid level 60 if not higher 2. Have items farmed up from Mephisto/Chaos/Cows/Pindle/Etc. Life, resists, FCR, FHR, IAS, FRW. You can die very easily in Hell without these 3. Do not engage monsters in the same way. Learn to kite and position yourself in doorways and abuse monster AI so you only fight a few at at time 4. Avoid immunities you can't fight. You will encounter some and you can either run past them or use a Mercenary (Who is Merc bugged. Video in description) to fight them slowly to progress through dangerous areas.
I was wondering if you have a guide on how to understand the map cells. Like knowing where the exit will spawn relative to the entrance etc. I remember watching one of your speed runs, I think it was the most recent world record and you covered some of it. A comprehensive guide for that would be really great for people looking to get more efficient with their playthroughs.

Some pretty good advices. I am glad that you mentioned that this game is not as easy as people would like to believe. It is rather easy when your characters are fully decked out but for the average players who doesn’t have access to a plethora of high level rune words, making an efficient character is not so easy even if you know what you’re doing and know how to play the game.
I've found that with a relatively small number of tips and the right approach to building your character, solo self-found budget gear is no problem. Then again, I lean towards caster characters which are not particularly gear sensitive. My only serious failure was a charger paladin who started struggling in act 5 hell. Then again, before I got the right hints my builds were probably less good. Here are the hints: put enough points in strength and dexterity for your gear and everything else in vitality (chug mana potions instead of pumping energy), or optionally put enough dexterity for max block. Make sure you max your resistances, especially lightning (high damage _and_ high variance) and fire (high average damage). Put 20 points into your one chosen skill and all its synergies, modulo having a plan for immune monsters.
Bonus fact: chest armor & shields fall into light, medium, and heavy categories with heavier armor penalizing movement speed and stamina drain. Thanks, MrLlama!

A dedicated leveling guide would be useful. Ie, trist runs 1-15, tombs, cows, etc. I'm sure you have a wealth of knowledge and knowing when/where to take a break and farm for gear, then knowing when to keep pushing would be great expertise to lend
For me, i usually run counteas to about 15 and thats decent enough to not need to level the rest of the way through normal. Then just run players 3 baal.
Thank you for this video MrLlama, I got a shock when I got to Hell and started getting whooped. Your guide has given me a direction I can take my Paladin. 😃
Watching this as a vet. Almost 88 fully geared storch included. Suprised how good I still am at this after never getting good drops in PoE. So much better
I hate PoE loot system tbh. I just want to play the game and have a nice dopamine rush when my shit drops as loot, not spend hours at this bullshit crafting table and rerolling items lmao
Great video and great advice. D2 is most rewarding when efficiency is the modis operandi. It can be pretty frustrating being in Hell and hitting that brick wall for long periods of time.
Still watching these even I have beat hell in past. YT was not a thing back then. Just watching these to entertain myself and avoid mindlessly scrolling in social media/internet.
Great video, have learned alot.. Played alot d2 back in the early 00s but I am really rusty, so really nice with this guide.. I don't seem to be able to find your Mephisto run guide video.
Hi Mr Llama. Thanks to you finally I finally finished Hell. :) Take time, take farm and take learning. My Char is a Paladin Zealot. Thanks for your guides.
Got to hell mode for the first time, and was unfortunately on a frenzy barb and had to learn some very tough lessons fast, thankfully I still had all my re-specs and made it work but rather then going into it at level 58 ish I should have put it off tell like 73, I wasn’t hitting ANYTHING, but one of the perks I quickly learned was getting a point into berserk to deal with physical immunes and I loved realizing I can kill anything, so it made the grinding nature of a barb the whole game to make the end game have an absolutely amazing end game
Made a barbarian using my little knowledge of Diablo 3… Diablo took me 13 times to beat lol, but I’m on hell now and have a real build. Thank you big guy!
Just reached hardcore hell.. Most resistances are +-50% (after reductions) and am level 61. My merc went down instantly, I went through my potions not much longer (yet, I live! :P). But hell this scares me so much more than on softcore.. Thanks for the guide though! Your guides helped me on my first hammerdin as well :) (which is the char I'm playing now)
Is there any chance you'll do a gear progression kind of video for new players like me? Such as good early game gears for the player + mercenary. I'm so overwhelmed since all your gears are mainly end-game gears.
I lost my HC LVL 83 Sum Necro to Ball, made it back to hell in about 20 - 25H of gameplay. Now I'm back to LVL 76, yes I'm doing it only for a trophy, but every time I look up some kind of guide, I feel like the RNG in this game is just messing my run up, not to mention I was stupid enough not to do offline char. And yet you have MrLlamaSC here having the best charms in the game at LVL 87 :D
Damn all my years of diablo 2 and i never knew about that interaction about character level, monster level, and attack rating. And that explains alotta things
Haven't played in years. Made a javazon and imagine my surprise when I arrived at travincal and the council is lightning immune. Needless to say my merc was not up to the task.
I feel like either the game is trolling me or like 50% of the monsters and a good chunk of elites are lightning immune. I knew I should have made a sorceress.
this was very good to hear, i've been struggling a bit with playing safe on my fury druid mostly because he's so damn fast and i easily get overwhelmed by mobs in tight corridors and i was wondering if i was just under geared or something and needed to farm in safer places, but now knowing that i just need to play more safely and it's a part of the experience i feel more confident that i can do the content that i was struggling a bit with, just play slower and more tactfully until i get the things i need and sometimes don't even worry about it, just run past it.
That's been my issue bro, I leveled really high going into hell with ww Barb. I didn't change up my play style and I regretted it, now I'm taking it slower and I'm enjoying it. Damn physical immunes!!
It gives me chills seeing your gear laying on the ground. I hope you have a hard wired conntection. I learned not to leave my gear on the ground with wifi. Thanks for the info.
Its funny, when I was a kid 20 years old, I didn't run any builds, didn't respecs or use any rune words (no internet to check recipes), I just use whatever drops for me and still manages to beat HELL with all the characters. Not sure if I can do it still today. lol
Same for me lol and back then i literally know nothing about english and i just equip anything that got bigger number, because when i first touched diablo 2 i was at 6 grade and in my country we starting to learn english at 6 grade at that time haha
I was like 12-14 when i played d2, now im 32, i did the same as u, just get whatever i get from drops or npcs, and try to kill diablo in hell with summon necro in 1-2hs 😂😂
@@introchris6083 Id be inclined to trust him. I also remember taking like 6 hours to kill Hell Diablo because my build was probably atrocious but I had levels of time/patience/dedication I'll never have again.
I didn't realize how much my summonmancer build wad making my playthrough a cakewalk. I wS breezing in hell, then respecced to poisonmancer(with only some of the endgame gear) and it brought where I was ready for in Hell back down to Act1/NM runs so I'm definitely excited for this video
Thanks for this explanation. It really helped but I also understood a lot of this from playing Grim Dawn, where the same system applies, you go into 3 difficulties through the game and ever higher one gives a resistance penalty. Skipping the mobs is a good point, although as a Blizzard Sorc The Den of Evil is a bit meh. I got by with Static Fields and let my Templar murder them but he still died 3 times (with 60ish res all).
Low budget gear: Iratha's Finery. The combination gives lots of elemental immunities. Upgrade the belt (in the Horadric Cube) to get the necessary potion slots.
@@faustomadebr Is it possible to ‘skip’ it? I mean, you have to pass it through to get to the next location. I barely could take it with a sorc, but those light immune kinda ghosts… I‘ll have to do some research for my javazone *facepalm*
@@faustomadebr Yeah, I guess. I just always think that streamers have some magic ways to bypass such dangerous zones, while we mortals have to kite, dodge and what not 😆
I find the easiest way to farm nightmare/hell mephisto in the beginning is to make a Firewall sorc. He can't hurt from beyond the moat, You can kill him quickly with no gear at level 60, Warmth is the main synergy for Firewall so it really helps with mana to have that maxed. On PD2 the Moat trick doesn't work, but you can simply make your sorc MaxBlock with a Stormshield or Whistan's Guard, telestomp mephisto and he uses physical swipes instead of lightning and your firewall will kill him before he kills you. Once you get some better gear you can respec to something easier to use and more versatile than firewall.
I put probably thousands of hours in this game when I was a kid, but now playing Diablo 3 which keeps it fresh with seasonal changes, I just wish D2 (D2R) had an actual endgame instead of item farming for no other goal in mind.
all it really needs in that regard would be something like a leaderboard with uber Tristam clear times, maybe overall and for each individual build/class so that loot hunt in the endgame has a purpose...even if its just internet bragging rights (see d3 for that). I hope they keep supporting D2R in that way, any way for that matter
Diablo 3 endgame was EXTREMELY weak in my opinion, there’s 3 things to do - bounties - rifts - Ubers?? BORINNGGF you farm for a primal for hundreds of hours and it gets boring as hell
@@billyschroeder2671 How is that any different from D2? Hundreds of hours killing Meph to get loot to make yourself stronger to fight..... oh, wait, nothing because you are already OP. At least there is a leaderboard and a sense of progression while farming. If you're MFing on D2 for one specific item then you can do it for literally months before you see it and it's a very minor improvement while in D3 you're still leveling up, pushing for higher level Grifts and making your place on the leaderboards.
As an Assassin main who never min-maxed, the ultimate challenge of Diablo II single player is the Rite of Passage quest in Act 5. All my efforts are geared towards THAT particular fight. I dunno if that changes this time around with guides all over the place.
MrLlama! MrLlama! Can you PLEASE make a video on common hardcore mistakes or tricky places / packs / situations you have to watch out for or avoid when a noob? I died yesterday on my lvl60 HolyFreeze Paly while opening seals at Diablo’s crib on Nightmare. There’s one pack that spawns between you and your escape route and I constantly struggle there. There are probably more places / situations like this one and it would be great to sum it up in a video. Cheers! Ps love your content mate, keep it up because d2 is my game of choice and I’m thrilled to be back in action.
I’m already leveling up another chara and I have a teleport ring ready for my next seals approach but maybe there are other ways to avoid being gang banged
Another example would be the mother hugging Undead Stygian Dolls which are the meta boss of hardcore play throughs. Tiny bastards that killed more unfortunate hc homies than any boss up to date.
Next matter not all players are aware of is that running lowers your defenses to absolute crap so often running away from a pack can be the worst way to survive a shitty situation, especially when you’re being heavily surrounded. Switching to walk instead and charging away might work better. Oh you know what I mean, MrLlama, you’ve been places xddd
This video kind of scratches the surface but there are surely some fixed packs and situations where ppl often make mistakes or simply are not prepared for what’s coming. It would save lives man, literally xddd
One more thing, when I’m struggling to cover some resistance for a certain boss I end up chugging frost potions on Duriel or antidotes on Andariel fight. It gives a decent +50 res for 30 seconds so 3 pots on a belt are often enough for a fast boss fight.
Early runewords are usually way stronger than uniques and set items. Stealth, Rhyme, Ancient's Pledge, Lore, Leaf, Insight, even Honor are powerful and cheap and can be used all the way through Hell.
remember you can dual wield spirit weapon and shield for fat resistance. make sure to get a raven frost if possible for cannot be frozen. rhyme is also good covering both with overall resist plus cannot resist. If you can score a paladin shield and play a pali you can get over 20+ to resist socket shields that stack on top of these words to really make the move into hell alot easier.
Extra tip: you can take easy S class build, that clears all, including immunes. These would be: trap assasin, necro summoner, hammerdin, mb blizz sorc (but u need lvl 20 cold mastery to deal dam to immunes, and still will be hard). Otherwise aim for the party with a friend. 2 Coldl and ightning sorcs can clear all together in a blink of an eye and have same movespeeds. Only con would be that you need same drops.
People keep mentioning your name on my single D2 vid with soj gamble, did you ever get one? You have excellent content glad to be exposed and subscribe. Diablo has been a mainstay game in my life over 20 years and I appreciate your content! I probably have played d1 and hellfire as much as D2 but both hold a place in my heart. Sorry not a fan of d3 except roll mechanic on console was dece. Wishing you all the best! My advice for hell hardcore is max resist, play kiting classes, play synergizing duos. Almost done right now with my buddy, he's hammerdin and I'm summon necro, with act 2 mercs(auras). Excellent synergy. Don't play high player count in maggot lair though, it's hell for that duo.
Your guides have been super handy but I cant help but get PTSD when you grouped all those imps/fetishes together. Flashbacks of a blood and gunfire (poison darts hehe) in a hail of chaos and add a few firebreathers to ice the napalm
If you're goin' through hell keep on going. Don't slow down if you're scared don't show it. You might get out before the devil even knows you're there!
this video was perfekt for me! i leveled up several times watching it. one question: how important is defense as a stat? is it even worth to prioritize? for example updating a runeword with a better base? you mentioned that it is used for hit chance calculation, but is that all? does it also reduce the damage i take when get hit
usually what you want to use is light armour, because those need the lowest str and doesnt make you run slower. Def is much less ismportant. so in normal use studded leather, hard leather, etc. then later the superior or preferably the elite versions, like wire fleece, scarab husk. And when making more expensive runewords, just look up the reccomended base for that one. TLDR: Use highest possible light armor. higher def is nice but literally any other stat is more important early on.
@@GaryKingg hey, man. thank you for your reply and clarification. does a high defense stat get more important in the late game? or is it literally just a nice bonus and nothing else? i only change gear depending on the mods even if there are 100 points or more of defense in difference? i have that case a lot upgrading my gear in hell difficulty. mods are similar or even a little less good but huge jump in defense. since i ran monarch, i do have some strength to play with anyway. still not worth? anyway, your comment already helped me out a ton. thanks mate
@@sebastianvega4576 its a nice bonus just not worth sacrificing mobility or anything else for it. U usually have better means for staying alive, like crowd control and shit. But for ie as a mage if you just tele around, you can go for heavier armor since you dont run and probably got 156 str for monarch.
An excellent item with lots of resists is Moser's shield with two perfect diamonds in it. This shield is one of the reason why picking up rare shields isn't worth it, as (no exaggeration) 99.99% of all of them are worse.

It's not bad if you know going in, but nothing like going from 100(75/95) resist in nightmare to 0(>0) in hell, marching into battle like a demi God to be eaten like demisauce.
My bad. Didn't see the 3y. I am from the future!!!
You're a vet?
One of my rabbits has this bald spot on her neck. Is this something to worry about?
Great video and great advice. D2 is most rewarding when efficiency is the modis operandi. It can be pretty frustrating being in Hell and hitting that brick wall for long periods of time.
@6:50 “Is Minus 40?!”
*Contemplates for a second if his whole life is a lie” 😂🤣
Mr Llama Open his mind - Matrix really exist :O
Still watching these even I have beat hell in past. YT was not a thing back then. Just watching these to entertain myself and avoid mindlessly scrolling in social media/internet.
tip lama: you can trow items in floor with control instead of dragging. ;) thanks for your videos!
Thanks to MrLlamaSC's videos, I have my first ever character to make it to Hell, not only that he has beat Act I
Great video, have learned alot..
Same story for me, I've never beaten hell with my zealot pally, but I'm so close now!!!
The very first time I played d2, i was so freaked by Andariel that i grinded to lvl 30..in act 1..before i killed her 🤦♂️
With or without players x? You'll end up about 25-30 on Players 8 Act 1 thanks to the extra EXP.
haha, I remember my dad had a lvl 45 assassin and he still hadn't entered nightmare, but you take the cake here.
@@Bloodlyshiva oh i was alone..literally the 1st night i played, b4 even LoD dropped
@@yankochoynev652 AND you're here talking about your dad playing which means he didn't ruin his relationship like I did with my then gf 🤣😂 Oops.
@@_Cicero_ Well my dad recognised the bad side of computer games and basically hates them, but for a short time he was into d2.
If you're leveling for hell, do it on Nightmare Baal. He can drop many Hell items like Shako. Also, the XP is really nice.
Made a barbarian using my little knowledge of Diablo 3… Diablo took me 13 times to beat lol, but I’m on hell now and have a real build. Thank you big guy!
And to add I was level 41 on normal and 68 on nightmare :o
I liked your videos. Im new to Diablo 2 and I'm finding your videos very helpful.
Just reached hardcore hell.. Most resistances are +-50% (after reductions) and am level 61. My merc went down instantly, I went through my potions not much longer (yet, I live! :P). But hell this scares me so much more than on softcore..
Thanks for the guide though! Your guides helped me on my first hammerdin as well :) (which is the char I'm playing now)
Thanks for the info man! First time here and been rockin the charged strikes and thunderfury Amazon. So much fun 🎉 crazy damage
Is there any chance you'll do a gear progression kind of video for new players like me? Such as good early game gears for the player + mercenary. I'm so overwhelmed since all your gears are mainly end-game gears.
The way llama say those equips name is like shouting out your killing skill LOL.. thanks for the guide!
i played a lot as a relatively young kid, i when random 1 poitns each in all stats etc xD i'm glad to have found your chanel to get to next level :d
At least im not the only one who did it...
And yet you have
MrLlamaSC here having the best charms in the game at LVL 87 :D
Damn all my years of diablo 2 and i never knew about that interaction about character level, monster level, and attack rating. And that explains alotta things
This video was exactly what I've been looking for, thank you.
Haven't played in years. Made a javazon and imagine my surprise when I arrived at travincal and the council is lightning immune. Needless to say my merc was not up to the task.
Chapter 4 is bad for lightning and fire lmao
All of act3 is light immunes basically.
Act 2 can be a little bitch aswell for javazon lmao sweet maggot lair lightning immune, gl kiting on this lvl 😂
F
I feel like either the game is trolling me or like 50% of the monsters and a good chunk of elites are lightning immune. I knew I should have made a sorceress.
Every D2R player needs to watch this
Hey you, thanks for the guides!
Tip: If u press Ctrl + left click in some item, it will be dropped.
Been playing this game since the early 90s, and it still an awesome game
this was very good to hear, i've been struggling a bit with playing safe on my fury druid mostly because he's so damn fast and i easily get overwhelmed by mobs in tight corridors and i was wondering if i was just under geared or something and needed to farm in safer places, but now knowing that i just need to play more safely and it's a part of the experience i feel more confident that i can do the content that i was struggling a bit with, just play slower and more tactfully until i get the things i need and sometimes don't even worry about it, just run past it.
That's been my issue bro, I leveled really high going into hell with ww Barb. I didn't change up my play style and I regretted it, now I'm taking it slower and I'm enjoying it. Damn physical immunes!!
Thanks MrLlama. Definitely learned alot from that. New player here... Your guides are very useful ❤️
Before I watch this most likely excellent llama video. Mindset: don’t expect anything good to drop. Ever. Just accept the goodies as they come along.
It gives me chills seeing your gear laying on the ground. I hope you have a hard wired conntection. I learned not to leave my gear on the ground with wifi. Thanks for the info.
I'm playing Trap Assassin and absolutely loving it. Just beat Hell Act 3 at level 80, but lightning immunities are very, very annoying.
Got my Trapsin to Hell and can't get past the Stony Field lol. Still gotta get the right gear
Hell A3 is sooo brutal. A5 can be easy peasy or honestly worse than A3 thanks to guest monsters :(
Its funny, when I was a kid 20 years old, I didn't run any builds, didn't respecs or use any rune words (no internet to check recipes), I just use whatever drops for me and still manages to beat HELL with all the characters. Not sure if I can do it still today. lol
Yeah buddy! They called that 'roshambo' (rock, paper, scissors) in reference to the basic tools used. Well played 👏
To be honest, i highly doubt that.
What lvl were you going into hell? I'm 67 summonmancer and I finished nm.
@@nebojsakmezic9763 62. I respecced Poisonmancer and it's just not as good without the gear(particularly death's web) as summonmancer.
great guide, you nailed it. Hell is named that for a reason lol
19:13 "Fight the mobs that you can.."
Proceeds to run around the map for 5 minutes realizing everything is immune 🤣
Javazon: skip City of the Damned. Hahaha
Hey, it be like that sometimes, lol.
@@faustomadebr Is it possible to ‘skip’ it? I mean, you have to pass it through to get to the next location. I barely could take it with a sorc, but those light immune kinda ghosts… I‘ll have to do some research for my javazone *facepalm*
@@johnswire7859 You can explore carefully, wait for them to engage you, them you run away. Do it so you can find a safe way to the next level.
Once you get some better gear you can respec to something easier to use and more versatile than firewall.
having great fun ssf to hell act 4 chaos sanctuary now, reminding me why I Iove D2 so much again.
D3 is worthless. Level 70 in 10 minutes, then rift or greater rifts endlessly. What a mindless game compared to D2. Lol
@@joekerns1298 So running Baal/Meph 3000 times per char is not mindless?
Diablo 2 is mad hard. You're right. It's old school.
‘This would be a fine belt to take you into hell..’
Great video 🤟
Llama you are the goat of d2(r) content all the time, thx bro 🙂
Very good guide. However, you mention a Mephisto farming video you were supposed to link and it’s not there. Did you take it down?
Early runewords are usually way stronger than uniques and set items. Stealth, Rhyme, Ancient's Pledge, Lore, Leaf, Insight, even Honor are powerful and cheap and can be used all the way through Hell.
But you need equipment to put them in, none of my stuff has even 1 slot for a rune and I’m in hell difficulty
I love how going over spirit you didn't even mention the 55 fhr, it's so strong hahaha
The RUclips algorithm probably just startled a lot of non Diablo 2 players with this suggested video.
remember you can dual wield spirit weapon and shield for fat resistance. make sure to get a raven frost if possible for cannot be frozen. rhyme is also good covering both with overall resist plus cannot resist. If you can score a paladin shield and play a pali you can get over 20+ to resist socket shields that stack on top of these words to really make the move into hell alot easier.
yeah, I got a 4 socket paladin shield with 24 resist all, put four perfect diamonds in it, giving me +100 resist all on my shield alone.
Ancients Pledge works pretty well before Rhyme as well.
Would you guys recommend sacrificing high def in favor of high res for the shield?
@@jkkim6928 I can't imagine defense being worth more than resistance unless you're already maxed in Hell difficulty
Only con would be that you need same drops.
playing hardore in nightmare right now and i'm nervous about getting into hell
Man, was looking for this ! Thx a lot
"hey MrLama im lightning dmg, how do I kill lightning immunes?' - MrLama -> "That's the the neat thing, you don't"
MrLlamaSC you're the best!
@ 2:53 Todd Howard agrees: "It just hits"
A Stoicgamer once said
1 - Face what you should face
2 - Avoid what you still can't face
3 - Be wise to distinguish one from the other
People keep mentioning your name on my single D2 vid with soj gamble, did you ever get one?
Ur videos are just great to watch.
You might get out before the devil even knows you're there!
does mercenary bug work in D2R? I got a merc with Treachery but he still just dies. And in cow level? lol.
Spamming potions just isnt enough.
this video was perfekt for me! i leveled up several times watching it. one question: how important is defense as a stat? is it even worth to prioritize? for example updating a runeword with a better base? you mentioned that it is used for hit chance calculation, but is that all? does it also reduce the damage i take when get hit
usually what you want to use is light armour, because those need the lowest str and doesnt make you run slower.
Making versatile runewords in low str armour is also good for being able to use them on other chars later.
This is a fantastic video - thank you!
An excellent item with lots of resists is Moser's shield with two perfect diamonds in it. This shield is one of the reason why picking up rare shields isn't worth it, as (no exaggeration) 99.99% of all of them are worse.
a BIG OL BUMP! HECK YEAH BRO!
U read my mind dude
Great info much appreciate it
What is your strategy for Duriel killing you before the screen loads?
Actually, I had difficulty when I reached hell with my barb. However, I realized so much things in order to survive hell:
1. Resistances
2. Tankiness
3. Warcries (very important as they can buff your barb greatly)
4. FHR
I badly need Titans revenge, do I need to move through the Hell without it?
Btw ty for everything MrLlama
I need advice. I mainly solo/single player. Which is the best build for sorc? Meteorb? Pure Blizzard? Blizzball? I'm having hard time in hell as of now. Can't progress. Only until andariel. Im currently pure blizzard and freaking annoyed by immunes. Please help.
