    The upper cover is used to cool the cylinder from the fan. Without it, the cylinder does not cool!

    I have been running a craftsman hedge trimmer with straight pipes, for almost 6 seasons now, never even had to tune or put a new plug in it yet. But then again I own (straight pipe, straight cut ) lawn care.

    You might want to look into expansion chambers! As any 2-stroke racer knows.

    you should definitely put the plastic on top because it can not get cold

    Looks and sounds fun but not adding any HP. The idea of a two stroke exhaust is to reflect a sound wave back at the right time to keep the fresh air, fuel and oil charge in the cylinder that came up the transfers from the crankcase. This pipe actually converges and gets bigger... you would likely have to run the saw with the high speed screw backed out a lot more than with a stock can type exhaust. It is what it is take it or leave it.

    • @toast47624
      @toast47624 3 года назад +1

      This saw was running rich. This exhaust would have reduced backpressure or even created a vacuum. For peak power this is an advantage in chainsaws. More fuel would be required as you say and this guy has clearly added fuel, possibly too much. I expect he gained some top end power with this pipe. Stock 3120's are pretty detuned stock, they need to be ported to get them going. 395 is a better saw for pretty much everything. You can play around with mufflers but if you want a saw to go you need to port them.

    • @cobre7717
      @cobre7717 4 года назад +2

      Its okay only if you adjust the jet or air/fuel mixture.

    • @jiveturkey231
      @jiveturkey231 4 года назад +13

      No the cover is part of how the flywheel pushes air over the jug and cools the saw down

    • @cobre7717
      @cobre7717 4 года назад +3

      @@jiveturkey231 yeah that is true! The fan shroud directs air over the fins. But I think (guessing) he only ran it briefly - vs running saw all day. As the fuel goes through it does cool the cylinder a lot. That exhaust may sound nice but it could be bad. need some backpressure on two stroke. Megaphone exhaust help pull the air fuel charges out of the crankcase and into the cylinder. However It "may" be causing too big of a vacuum and sucking the fuel out of the cylinderas well. Its definitely fun to have a loud two-stroke regardless of the performance and "numbers". As long as they are having fun and not causing the modifications to melt anything then it's a great time!

    2-stroke engines need something like an expansion chamber to efficiently work. No exhaust, which works similar, the unit cannot reach its destinated power output.

    That exhaust will ruin your engine. Back pressure on 2 strokes is very important. You lost your cooling effect with that open pipe on there. It will hopefully ruin the reeds before you ruin the engine. Take that exhaust and throw if far away from you.. unless you put silencer on the saw

      I was planning on welding a custom exhaust for my chainsaw engine, only because I'm using the engine to make a custom scooter. Is there a way to make an exhaust that won't damage the engine?

  • @ihd-3603

    How did you recreate the expansion chamber? Two strokes are pretty anemic without them

    • @ihd-3603

      Also two strokes are more sensitive to having proper back pressure for more complete combustion.

    Looks hot but it's not. I have a stock Husky 2100CD with a 36 inch bar that would wipe that saw head to head.
    His rakers are too high or the saw is dull. He is forced to used the bumper spikes to push the saw blade into the wood. A sharp properly filed saw with the rakers at the right level will pull itself through the cut effortlessly. This guy is working his saw when the saw should be doing all of the work while he just holds on.
    Panbubak is right. That saw will burn out without the upper cover. This saw is not a motorcycle. It has to create it's own wind. This man is not a pro. He is just having fun.

      You’re right. A bar and chain bolted to a V8, cutting through dry poplar is the exact same as a 3120 pulling full compliment in solid red oak. I’m very impressed by your pro designation. Do you have a link to a video of your own that you can share?

      I set the camera at the wrong angle. I was cutting several 16 inch Rock Maple logs on 8ft. forks with a 36" bar. The 36" was fully engaged. If the camera were set to the side, the cutting would have been more impressive. Rock Maple is so hard that you have to file the saw different with high rakers or the saw will bounce around or bog down.
      When you work in the woods with mixed timber, you have to bring two saws. One is filed for Rock Maple and the other for all other woods.

      Actually its rich. A lean 2 stroke does not 4 stroke at all. Peak power drops off, heat builds and they lean out more a generate more heat till it self destructs in a worse case scenario.
