- Tommy Cooper was one of Britain's funniest comedians. Famous for his one and two liners, known as “Cooperisms”, as well as magic tricks that appeared to go spectacularly wrong, but were in fact meticulously choreographed.
A year before he died, he was performing in Jersey. So, just like that, here's our interview with him, unseen for 32 years...
Serious interviews with Tommy are a rare thing. They are usually with him in full blown Tommy Cooper mode. Priceless, because he was gone within a year of this interview
No smut, no swearing, just genuinely funny guy, loved him. Like so many of that time, gone & never to be replaced.... Or forgotten
Probably the most serious interview he ever gave. Fascinating, wish there were more.
Warren Baxter i
This was one year before he died of a heart attack...just guessing after seeing some of his other interviews, he probably didn't feel much like cutting up.
"have you ever died on stage?" And he did just that. Superb comedian.
What an absolute gentlemen. We were so blessed with performers like him.
THE most serious i have ever seen him in an interview..even 'Parkinson' never got this close...nice man was Tommy..very funny..and says it like it is..sadly missed..still watch his shows from time to time..his mastery of 'play on words; was insurpasable and sheer genious!..loved it when he was in a restaurant and said to the waiter 'Do you serve lobsters?' and the waiter says 'yes sir' and then Tommy puts the lobster on the table next to him...priceless! there's no one like him and there never will be..RIP Tommy Cooper x
I’ve never seen the ‘lobster’ scene. Hilarious.
I tell you what though, Parky played straight man to him on that interview and it was wonderful television.
A decent human being we all love🙏
Surely this interview wasn't just 3.57 secs, Tommy was a genuine, sober entertainer and we deserved at least 30 mins of serious talk, RIP Tommy, you are not forgotten!!
Sober? He was a chronic drinker.
James Bowie ....Yes in the 70's he became a heavy smoker and chronic drinker, but never appeared intoxicated on his shows, but in the end the TVs channels wouldn't have him on. His theatre shows were a hit though.
@@dennisjeffs4239 He was regularly on TV until his death.
Probably short for a snippet to be added to the local news programme for that night.
@@christown2827
3 57 secs is not a snippet, hardly even a blink!!
It's such a lovely thing seeing a true comic talking seriously. It is absolutely lovely to see. RIP Tommy, a comedy genius of our time.
I wish there were more interviews like this where he is just himself.
He seems like an incredibly wise & insightful man.
He died where he felt at home making us laugh the greatest our Tommy
There was not one single 'arrogant' fiber in this man's body. He was just a humble, yet very intelligent man.
MMM I'm not sure that's true. He had a bad temper
@@jahno7154Agreed. Whilst he was indeed a true comedy genius, he had his Demons. Really sad how he went but Tommy would have loved the fact that he literally left them all laughing. He's paid his dues in the end. God rest him
I can remember so well the day he died i was watching the Begining of "Live from Her Majesty's" on the 15th April 1984 but then i'd gone out to play football with some friends and came home to be told by my mum that he had Collapsed on stage it was watching the News that night that i found out he had died...Tommy Cooper was a Genius and one joke he told always makes me laugh it's just a simple little gag a very silly gag but still makes me chuckle "Sorry i've something in my eye... Oh it's My Finger" still makes me laugh
One of the all time great comedians. A true gentleman great father to his kids. A wizard a true star!
My hero I grew up with him Tommy your my hero remember the day he died I was seven years old in 1984 I'm now 39 a lot of today's comics could learn from Tommy rip ur legend is still with us all
He actually looks well in this video. Not dripping with sweat and pale and seems quite relaxed. Shame he didn't have long left.
"Have you ever died a death,on stage" wow? what a legend this guy was.
Interviewed from heaven xD

One of the GREATS...
Talk about for seeing the future.
Tommy Cooper was a class act with ethical standards. I don't think there will ever be anyone as good as Mr Cooper as it would take centuries for some one of his elk.
My old man was a grumpy bastard. He couldn’t stand the great Morecambe and wise,or most of the outstanding acts of the sixties and seventies, but Tommy cooper would have tears of laughter running down the old bastard’s eyes. I miss them both.
A good interview. Very honest. Lovely to see Tommy just being a normal bloke and having a sensible conversation. Legend.
A big, sweet, funny man who was taken from us way too soon!! Love him!!
I really didn't want this to stop it was so nice seeing him being serious, even tho we loved him being daft it was brill to see him not acting about, very eerie when the interviewer asks if he's ever died on stage and he said yes.

Legends live on ,God Bless You Tommy .
I was 7 years old when he passed away.. So sad, he died on stage doing something he loved. He is not the only famous actor to have done that, Sid James also passed away on stage. One of the best
Sid James died in the ambulance.
He died in hospital an hour after having the heart attack.
@Buffalo 66 he pass away thats all to be said
tommy cooper what more can you say a one off performer keep his memory alive long live his name
An unforgettable personality and very funny comedian! 😁👍
oh blimey... what a lovely little clip. the most serious i've ever seen him and that's so welcome. and the little bit where he say's "Well you said it!" and the look after - wow - something of the sharp mind he kept so well hidden. brilliant, brilliant, brilliant - thanks for the upload!
Yes, I didn't like the way the interviewer implied he used blue humour. He didn't, not in my experience.Kudos to Tommy for turning the question back at him. RIP, you lovely man.
Tommy was en still is the best!!! R.I.P.
Well done Channel TV for their archive there is some brilliant footage of interviews with actors and comedy greats. Tommy was very relaxed this was helped by a good interviewer who asked sensible questions.
Quite literally a class act from an age that I crave for. 💜😪
Never a bad word . Legend
He seemed like a lovely bloke
crazyclive Yes when I heard about that I was saddened as I thought he was hilarious but now I only see a drunken wife beater.
His daughter said it was massively exaggerated, 95% of the time he was a great father and husband according to her.
jimbob, must be heavenly only being beaten up 5% of the time.XD
@crazyclive As others have said, it was prob exaggerated. Typical media. Also, his wife was no angel either! She liked the odd bottle and a good fight by all accounts.
@@topneorej 😂😂😂😂😂
Great memories of Tommy from childhood, he could always make people laugh. And as he says, with clean jokes and inoffensive comedy. Tommy was rarely this candid but you have to wonder what he thought of this interviewer's daft questions.
Tommy died on stage but he spent his whole like killing audiences with his superb humour , he never ever resorted to blue jokes or expletives , he was the most wonderful comedian who ever lived and he was unique in all respects. What a gent and still so badly missed . We shall not see his like again
" Have you ever died on stage?" An eerily prescient question given what was to happen the next year.
It's really fascinating to see him being himself in this interview, revealing something of the person behind the comedy persona.
rare to see tommy even half serious. never heard him curse or do blue gags. one of those few performers who was as funny as he looked.
Never heard him curse?? Did you ever talk to him in real life? He was worse than Hughie Green. I have never heard language like it. I was shocked. Some women walked out, they couldn't stand it. I am serious, he could have been arrested for language like that.
@@offrampt I DON'T BELIEVE IT! 😂
JUST LIKE THAT? 🤔
What do they mean by blue jokes?
@@r4h4al Jokes that are offensive.
My word! The question at 2:05.
I saw that as a kid. Lovely Tommy! RIP. What a gent.
Interesting how they ask Tommy if he ever died a death on stage and he actually did the following year. It's nice to see him being serious with the interviewer on this one and not clowning around too much with the questions.
not to spread any blasphemous conspiracies but in the video where he passed out his last words were,"who did that?"
Actually his last words were "thank you love", spoken to the assistant who was helping him put on the magic coat.
This is amazing given the fact that Tommy was prepared and allowing to do a serious interview. He rarely turned a question into a comedy bit like he did in all the other interviews.
So I'm very envious of the man who is interviewing Tommy. Surely there is more than these 3 minutes???
I would like to have a had a pint with old Tommy. Bet he was a good laugh.
'Have you ever died a death on stage, in front of an audience!?'. How ironically true that question turned out to be.
Unlike a lot of comedians these days which are LAZY when they rely on profanity, sexual jokes, or gross-out humor to be funny.... you don't have to do that!
Comedy is all about timing!
Look to Tommy Cooper ~ You can be creative & colorful! It's not hard!
Don’t paint everyone with the same brush.
@@thegrimreaper1991 He didn't..he said "unlike a lot of comedians" That isn't saying, everyone, is it!
I can't be easy or everyone would do it.
@@roytheboy1963 More than likely a Yank, you have to spell everything out to them.
A brilliant interview. Well done to Channel Tv as well top interviewer!
Definitely the GOAT. Never will be another Tommy.
A rock band I know met Tommy in a hotel bar and invited him to their table. He sat with them for a while then said, "oh dear, I left my change on the bar, I better go and get it. It's only a shilling but you know - it's not the principle, it's the money!"
"I was cleaning the attic last week with my wife. Filthy, dirty, covered in cobwebs............. but she's good with the kids".
A great performer for people of all ages.
Wow!!!! Not suggesting Parkys interview wasn't great but this just adds to my admiration for Tommy. How untimely a death and for him, how else would he have wanted it. On stage, making people happy.
My cousin had the good fortune to have met him in a pub and have a drink with him he said he was obviously funny but really nice ...
I’d luv to have met that man -Absolute legend
What a legend.
At 2:06, the interviewer asks, 'have you ever died a death on stage?' It could only have been days or a few weeks later he literally died on stage - April 15, 1983. RIP Tommy, you were just wonderful...
Yes April 15, 1984!!
Yeah that's spooky.
Well he had a saw head
Wrong year ha ha ha!
its an expression
As serious as I've ever seen Tommy Cooper. Great interview.
He was funny and clean. one the best of all time. thats why he was always sold out. his offspring must be proud to this day of him. a pros pro
Taken way way way to soon. RIP Tommy.
Unfortunate question at 02:05...
Used to pump it up in several Ealing pubs..
The man died in his proper environment, not all of us will have that opportunity.
The funniest man ever brilliant 🤩
Never any foul wards . or bad language and today's acts almost half to yous it . Tommy was the best i was four when he died R I P tommy
Nice to see Tommy being serious
An inkling of just how seriously the 'clumsy, fumbling magician' actually took his craft.
I love this man !
Great comedic performer very sadly missed
Brilliant, ta for video (WHAT A GUY)
Have just read MANY, MANY, MANY favourable comments here. Tommy Cooper has to be (even today) a World Class performer. Never fails to make me laugh! I particularly enjoyed this interview because I'm from Jersey. He was always welcome on this island. If I remember correctly, he used to enjoy a libation or two in the "Seaforth" before his gig at "Fort Regent" or the "pavilion" at West Park. He will be missed by many. Can't say any more than the accolades below.
Funny guy...God bless.
Have you ever died on stage? 😁 Yes... Twice!
Tommy could be quite eccentric - For example, when he was staying in a hotel, rather eating in the restaurant, he brought a camp stove with him and cooked his own meal in his room !
Great to see Tommy being serious like that, just like that in fact, not like this, or any other other way for that matter, but just like that .. ha hah ha .. you like that one do yer ha ha ha ..
Tommy was so right, at the closing question, that the audience knows if the performer has a cockey attitude. Nothing kills a performer's streetcred, or the affection an audience might previously have felt for a performer than ddiscovering they have acquired a cocky attitude. It is even recognisable in videos made years ago! Tommy Cooper didnt suffer from a cockey attitude any more than his act sometimes contained inuendo or smut. Stupid interviewer, it was his own dirty mind! Tommy Cooper was a straight down the line 'clean humour' comedian and you knew without a doubt you could relax and enjoy his show. He was the ultimate in witty and humour because of it. Akin to bad Dad-jokes, his humour and actions just evoked spontaneous laughter like that of a young child - joyful and fun, pure magic. Comedians who use foul language as the driving force of their act really are not comedians at all. like singers who have to have hitech editing to make their songs listenable when their singing is very weak they are not, therefore, singers with a natural lovely voice! Tommy Cooper was authentic in every cell of his body. I think his almost exaggerated humility hid a very sad man. What a pity he couldnt believe that his audience loved him and wanted him to feel as happy at all times as he made them.
My God, 2:04 to 2:35 is so heartbreaking, it's like he's describing the night of his death..
It has been great to live in the same time as Tommy, the Beatles, Abba. Billy Connolly, Robin Williams and now Jacob Collier and funny men like Bill Burr etc. Its all changing for the worse now. Such a shame.
Great great magician.great commedian
"Have you ever died on stage ?" (2.02) ... Wow.
Great man
Tommy didn't need blue gags. He was naturally funny
"Have you ever died on stage?" *Oh yes I have!*

I cried when he died on stage...
Me too Bob. Wonderful Wonderful,Very Very Funny Man, who is sadly missed!!! He made us laugh, and will still have everyone rolling around up there! Put it this way...Our loss is heaven's gain.💔

One of the all time great laughs!
Cooper was one of the only comedians who, didn't even have to open his mouth and could still have people laughing.
Dean Martin loved Tommy copper.
RIP TOMMY COOPER 🕊

A good interviewer too
Have you ever died a death on stage? Ohh have I ever?! Oooof foreshadowing.

a 10/10 comedy god.
So crazy that this interview was just a few hours before he died
No it wasn't, he died the following year
