I used to have a LoadHaul 56 on this era and it was a good model, even by today's standards it wasn't all that bad. Good to see you not giving up on older locos and not affriad to get your hands dirty under the body! Tbh, I'm too scared now on most modern models as there so expensive to break! Keep these vids coming bud as I like to see helpful and tutorial vids, always handy when I'm stuck! Keep safe buddy, Keiran 👍👍👍
Thanks for your positive feedback Keiran, much appreciated. I've sold some of my older DC locos on but this and a few good looking models are getting chipped & staying with me. This 56 is one of my favourites so it's getting the full upgrade treatment ! :) Thanks again buddy & all the best...........Andy
I was amused by this. I have a Mainline 56, one of the earliest I bought. I gave it 3 new traction tyres, oiled the bearings and gears and now it runs as sweetly as anything. I agree with you, it was ahead of its time. Maybe I'll replace the old bulbs with some 12v LEDs to make the lights brighter. Compared to modern stock its a doddle to maintain too (like Lima).
Hi Alan, many thanks for your feedback & thanks for watching. i was planning to make a couple of further videos about this model - including adding led lighting & weathering but other commitments got in the way. Maybe this year I'll get round to it. The model is still in my collection & will be making an appearance in future videos. All the best...Andy
Great video, useful and informative. I recently got one, and it is in a heck of a mess! It's a full strip and rebuild and you have explained it well. Thanks.
@@Andy-SharlstonEastgate I have to say, I have completed the overhaul and it's because of your excellent video! You are quite right about the brushes and springs, what a stupid design! That took longer to do than absolutely anything else I have done on model railways. Keep up the good work and I have subscribed.
Hi Aaron, sorry for the delay in replying, I've had PC problems. I'm really glad the video was helpful and that your 56 is now serviced & running how it should. Many thanks for your wonderful feedback, it's feedback like this that makes it all worthwhile :) Thanks for the sub & all the best...............Andy
Thanks for your kind comment Andy, I've deceided to do a few refurb/electrical videos while the layout is out of action, keeps me busy and I gain some experience at the same time :) Cheers.......Andy
Very well explained and I am now going down the route of getting Lima locos and converting to DCC and adding lights and with some extra detail and wethering you are getting a very nice loco at half the price of a new one................Cheers Kev
Many thanks for watching Kev, practicing on older locos is a really good way to start, not only for the experience but also so I don't make a mess of my newer models. Plus, it's good to keep these classics running and at a minimum cost as you say :) All the best.........Andy
Hi, its my first time seeing a Mainline Ringfield type motor, they look to be much better designed and constructed than the Hornby version. It looks a though they can run very well at low speeds so are probably more suitable for DCC. Thanks for showing this video it was very interesting, cheers Paul.
Thanks for dropping in Paul. Yes, the motor does run well, we'll see in the next installment if it takes to being dcc converted. Glad you enjoyed the vid and thanks for your comment.........Andy
great video i have the west yorkshire enterprise still runs well but it does derail alot i think it needs new driving wheels but cant find the right ones any ideas would be helpful. i am more a Lima fan cant go wrong with them still have mine from 80;s and still running
Thanks for your comment. Mine is still running well and no problems with the derailing up to now. I did plan to weather this model & fit some lights but a list of other things got in the way ! Thanks for watching..Andy
Thanks for watching and your comment James, I've got attached to this model so it's going to get a chip and be the first loco I to try to weather. All the best......Andy
Hi, Thanks for a very good video. I have a very smooth running Mainline Class 56, following your guidance. However my Model 56114 (Maltby Colliery) has an original light fitting at each end of the body with both white and red elements. Accordingly the grain of wheat bulb illuminates both the driving and tail lights at the same time! Is this the same on your Class 55 or am I missing a vital point? Any advice most welcome. Best Regards, Tony 🚇
Hi Tony, Many thanks for your comment 👍 I'm glad the video has been of use to you. Unfortunately, the Mainline lights all come on together, one bulb 💡 for four lights ! You can upgrade them, I've seen a kit somewhere to make them independent and directional, can't think of the name now 🤔 All the best.....Andy
I’ve just serviced one of these first time ever servicing a loco I used oil not grease but it seems like it now runs horrible or barley it’s like the motor stops or is stuck is this because of I didn’t use grease or have I really messed it up
Hi Andrew, what oil did you use? I can't imagine oil would jam the motor. Check the cogs are seated properly and run freely, then check that the brushes & the springs are seated. Let me know how you get on..........Andy

These models were well ahead back in the day, just used to be a bugger for derailing on points etc.
Thanks for watching and your comment James, I've got attached to this model so it's going to get a chip and be the first loco I to try to weather. All the best......Andy
