As I said before the video was taken down by RUclips, Five Star Stories is the GOAT mecha epic. It's so incredibly epic, Tetsuya Takahashi practically took notes from it as he was making Xenogears.
I was stationed in Japan when FFS came out. It took me 2 years to hunt down the VHS . To this day that it is the only VHS I have. Nagano is my favorite mecha designer. I'm glad you discovered FFS and shared it with everyone.
I love five star stories. I read a lot of the mangas and own the movie on dvd. In my opinion it is the greatest saga in anime/manga. It has mechas, gods and demons, dragons, tragic love stories, heroic fights, moments of pathos, game of thrones level political intrigue, and all on a scale that's span millions if not billions of years and maybe more then one universe. If you want something a bit different then gundam or macross to talk about you might want to look at the super robot genre, the Getter Robo series is a interesting one or some of the lesser known ones like Captain Earth or Star driver or even Dancougar.
someone already beat me to it but yes, FSS is literally the Japanese version of Dune. The animation adaption in 1988 is the story of the first novel exactly how the 1984/2021 version of Dune is based on the first novel. Both Dune and FSS span different planets/galaxies and both have houses and kingdoms with their own unique worlds and political intrigue
Like I said, it is hard to overstate the impact Five Star Stories had on anime and manga, because you see things that remind you of it everywhere. I believe that without The Five Star Stories, anime and manga would look a lot different today. We probably wouldn't have Turn ∀ Gundam, Gundam Wing, Iron Blooded Orphans, Neo-Genesis Evangelon, or that neo-baroque aesthetic that distinguishes today's anime, from the anime of a previous era.
My favorite mecha franchise of all time! FSS is so majestic, and impressive. It's truly EPIC. Not only is the artwork mind-blowingly beautiful, but the complexity and intrigue of the universe reminds me of Frank Herbert's "Dune". I just wish we had more in-period OVAs or perhaps a series in the style of the original anime. The movie is a masterpiece of animation.
I have had this movie in my DVD collection when it was available many years ago, and the mechanical designs are among the most compelling designs I've seem to this day! They were way ahead of their time IMHO... Hopefully the rebranded Gothicmade will get rereleased in a digital format and get expanded in the near future.
There are model kits that were made from plastic, resin and soft vinyl kits from several companies like Volks, Wave, Work shop cast and Kiyodo for five star stories.
And all of them are for pro modellers, essentially statues with no colour separation (and with steep price) right? Nothing to have looking good out of box and pose safely
Love the anime, great art and music; however the manga was even better. The clothing and outfits were brilliant, you can see that Mamoru Nagano was a fashion designer.
Just recently starting to get into this series, I recently acquired the full set of JP mangas, including the ones that never got english translations. I'm gonna do my part, folks.
I completely agree, "mecha" is just an ingredient, a part of the world or setting, rather than something as narrow as a "genre", all of them are very different and each is unique in its story, characters and world building, I can't have a TOP 10 because I don't feel that one is better than the other, my favorites would be all in the 1st place, but for me, there have been at least 4 mecha designers who I think that have influenced or inspired 90% of all real robots in the industry and even in hollywood and videogames, those would be Kunio Okawara, Shoji Kawamori, Mamoru Nagano and Yutaka Izubuchi, each one of them has contributed a lot for the industry, the super robots are another whole story as well
Indeed it is very ambitious, too ambitious for any single man. However I respect what Nagano Mamoru is trying to do. BTW, Rognar and Kaien were my favorite characters, the cast is wonderful. There are so many characters and they are (mostly) well-written.
@@mattmaddogwheaton4724 well Sopp and amaretsu are the same person, amaretsu is literally God according to nagano, so sopp is his alter ego when going out
there isn't much deep discussion about this franchise online since I found out about this on a fansite back in college (ages ago). I had a handful of Newtype magazines that I can't even read, I just wanna know its world /lore beyond the anime since the manga is as old as I am.
I'm often mystified by how so much great classic anime seems to just vanish. There's so much I'd be willing to pay to see again. So many great films... I won't pay you 20bucks for them (get a life. They're 40yrs old ffs), but I'd toss ten bucks to watch any of a dozen old Anime I could name. And quite a few more I can't remember the names of.
Is it still ongoing? Ive only read all of the manga that is on mangadex, and its not the entire manga currently, so i am curious to know if the manga is still ongoing to this day, also the Led mirage V3 or the blue knight are my favorite mortar headds
Yes, still going strong. 2026 will be the 40th anniversary of it being serialized in Newtype. No real hopes of it being translated into English, though.
Still ongoing and naganos even admitted the story is so massive he might never finish it he at least said he has no plans ending it any time soon. But hey 90 page chapters are more then enough what’s both agonizing and fun is he already has written the entire timeline and story is told non linear so it’s fun and infuriating to see which part of the timeline each chapter or usually arc focuses on. Still wanna see the part where laichess hides the knight of gold in 1945 in Poland! Hehehe
Ehhhh, I actually prefer this Mecha style more than the Gundams. Crazy how the algorithm work. First I get shown a short of the golden mecha fighting, then next day, I get suggested your video. THEY are ALWAYS watching us. 💀😬
I agree, it’s why the later 90’s and early 2000’s Tomino series, Brain powered, wings of rean, king gainer, and Turn A Gundam, are the only ones I have interest in, in my honest opinion, Nagano is so much better then Tomino at space opera he takes a lot more from the poetic style of leiji Matsumoto (who is the best at anime space stories up with the author of logh), with the robots of Tomino, and its absolute peak
I’m late but it’s ongoing as of volume 12 he retconned it to fit with his mecha film gothicmade, a film which he refuses to release on home video as he insists it can only be seen in 4k in theatres with Dolby surround sound. Not making this up. Still cool though
Too bad the English version of the manga is incomplete and extremely expensive. A long with that, L-Gaim doesn’t even have a blu-ray and the dvd looks and sounds terrible. Two of my favorite mecha stories and I can’t fully experience either.
Nagano's design never gets old for over 30 years...... spent hours as kid drawing the mirage series and now my fav is the bang doll
The thing that I always loved about FSS is that it is mecha sci-fi. In the vein of epic far future space opera such a Dune and The Foundation series.
Agreed allways loved the star empire/distant future vibe ... Funny you brought up foundation

Lmao when he started describing the premise I just kept thinking to myself “That’s Dune, he’s just describing dune” glad I wasn’t the only one

Another anime like Five Star Stories will be Escaflowne, Magic Knight Rayearth, Gun x Sword, Dunbine, and Knight's & Magic
Escaflowne I can’t recommend enough!!

I just hope that Gothicmade and its continuation can be broadcasted worldwide. Manga too
Love Nagano's mech designs! Please also review L-Gaim

Shoujo Romance in Mecha's Skin. Prince charming with a golden mecha rescuing maiden in distress. The storyline is unique in the mecha genre.
Much like Escaflowne!
Until he becomes unknowable lovecraft space hitler.
Glad i got to see this video the first time around.
Sad you had to reupload this but I’ve been getting more into the FSS model kits and this was really to watch while I work on my A-Toll kit 😄
I've got a 1/220 jagd mirage twin tower to work on myself

I'm here for all of it. Even the re-uploads 👍🏽
my holy grail of anime. some day i will own this
I think the Hyaku Shiki Crash is a nod to Nagano’s FSS designs. The torso of the kit is reminiscent of the Mortar Heads’ design.
Love the anime, great art and music; however the manga was even better.

FSS and particularly Gothicmade = Best designs in all of Mecha anime. I have a 1:72 Z.A.P and its mind blowing in 3d
Needs a Blu-ray release
Damn right, it does!
Two days I will go the rest of my life anxiously awaiting: a home video release of Gothicmade and a competent English translation of the FSS manga.
Indeed it is very ambitious, too ambitious for any single man.
However I respect what Nagano Mamoru is trying to do.
BTW, Rognar and Kaien were my favorite characters, the cast is wonderful. There are so many characters and they are (mostly) well-written.
I read a few Manga volumes Soap plays multiple roles in the series.
He's practically the main character of the entire saga. Basically, he's to FSS what Fei is to Xenogears.

Escaflow is definitely my favorite outside Gundam.
Excellent video. Loved the movie so much I started reading the Manga. Definitely worth it.
I’ve seen the clip at 6:12 as a GIF in so many videos and now I know the source, thanks!

Try " Fight!!! Iczer One!", Dangaioh, and Madlax.
one of the most beautiful movie mech i and design i have ever scene and the landscapes wow 🤘🏻🤣👍🏻
If you are a Mecha fan, please consider Patlabor series for real robot and Gunbuster for super robot. You will love both I think.
This series even inspired type moon
where in the world did he watch this?! I've been looking for a while and found no place to watch it.

The music as well...fugghh
This seems interesting, shame its hard to find it physically, just like Heavy metal L-gaim and Dangaioh.

Sorry but xenogears from ps1 deserve that title more
