    Don’t get me wrong I am not criticising your wife just the teacher, when I first started using a saw (I think they had just been invented) I was having difficulty cutting to a straight line, my teacher explained that I should hole my forefinger along the saw and grip the saw with the other three fingers. As soon as I mastered that, I improved a lot, not as much as he wanted me too but an improvement anyway.

    The bench turned out almost as beautiful as Ms. Sarah herself.
    Fine piece of work my lady.
    I love y'all's playfulness together too. It is great to see a couple with your time together that still has that spark.
    I think it may have been asked before, but what is the way to estimate the average height for such a work bench? Would I want it at elbow, mid forearm, or about wrist height with my arm hanging loose (for a good planing height without making my back hurt) then how much lift would I want for a small bench top bench for joinery cutting while standing? I am about 5'8 1/2" tall with a longer upper body and shorter legs (29" inseam).
    Thanks

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  3 года назад +1

      A lot of different woodworking gurus will tell you different things that make the best bench height. The honest truth is that there is no best bench height. It is a completely personal preference. Most old school hand tool woodworkers prefer the bench to be a bit higher and most hybrid woodworkers like the bench to be a bit lower. And there's a lot of different reasons for that but there are a lot of in between. My most common suggestion is grab a board and a plane and go around the house put them on different things at different heights and see how it feels. Then make the bench one inch higher than that. Nice thing is you can always cut it down and if you want to see what a shorter bench would feel like put a couple boards on the floor and stand on them while planning. And then just cut that much off the bench if you like it.

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  2 года назад

      If you want taller you just make the legs a few inches longer to whatever heights you want. Usually I tell people make it a good bit longer than you want it to be and then you can always cut the legs down to a height that fits you in the future. You can put some lumber on the ground to see what a shorter bench would feel like. But I have plans to my bench which is on the higher side. www.woodbywright.com/shop/workbench

    • @WoodByWright
      @WoodByWright  3 года назад +1

      You want to get the screws as close to the middle of the chop as possible. And recessing it 3/4-in allowed us to put them pretty close to the middle. I would like to go a little farther in but that's good enough. If the screws are too far down then there's a lot of twist on the jaw when you clamp something just at the top.
