Congratulations! I draw as well. Trust me…we put a lot of time, and work into what we do.
The Process:
That particular art looks like it was Penciled Digitally, then it was sent digitally to the Inker, that person then prints out an 11” X17” Non-Photo Blue-Line art board. Then, the Inker uses, Quill pens w/ Hunt # 102 Nibs, Brushes, Disposable Ink Pens or, all of the above, to Ink the artwork to finish it all. Then the Inker scans the Inked board, sends the Digital File to the Publisher, who after Editing it, is responsible for sending the File to the Printer.
The Inker gets to keep the Blue Penciled Board he Inked, to sell at Conventions, and / or to Comic Book Art Dealers.
The older…more analog format ( which I still prefer ), is where the Penciler draws a sequential page, or splash page with Graphite Pencil, scans the page to keep for his records, then FedEx’s the Original Pencil Art board to the Inker. Once the inker receives it, they will lightly erase any deep Pencil lines, to better lay down the Ink, with either Ink Pen, or Brush, usually both. Once the board is completely inked, you can go over certain parts to erase any remaining Pencil marks.
Both procedures work.
However, because of the modern insert of the Digital step, what you hold in your hands is a Blue Line Inked Art Board / Page.
Is it exactly the same as an Original Penciled page with a graphite Pencil, in my view - No.
Is it the next best thing? Yes.
As an Org. Comic Book Art Dealer, being a Penciler / Inker myself, I own both. Blue Line boards to practice my Inking on, and Org. Penciled pages, that I would make a copy of before Inking it, then Ink the drawing right over the actual penciled artwork.
Should you decide to start collecting ‘Org. Comic Book Art’, I say be careful…as it is a far more an expensive hobby than collecting Raw and Graded comic books, and there is no trusted-third party to authenticate Org. Comic Book Art. That you learn on your own over many years in dealing with Org Comic Book Art. Although, unlike graded comics in a plastic case, there is little room for deception in this Business. But, it can happen, to an individual who may not be as experienced as other say, 20-40 year collectors.
