I bought this gun yesterday to use as an every day carry gun. I brought it home, cleaned it and shot 50 rounds through it. It performed flawlessly! I am not a handgun expert, so I’m happy to hear your positive review, it looks like I made a good purchase. Thank you and keep up the good work.
Despite most of the reviews panning this pistol when it was released, I bought one. The biggest issue most reviewers had was the "false" reset that one experiences when not letting the trigger out completely, I think the reviewers who had this issue failed to acknowledge that this pistol isn't a race gun, it's a pocket EDC gun. This gun is going to be used in a self-defense situation where gross motor skills will rule and you don't try to finesse or stage the reset. It works just fine in that situation.
Agreed Mike. It also shows too many of the online “influencers” just don’t have the background knowledge needed to really know guns. I’ve not had any issues with mine, from the get-go. And as you say, I always make sure to completely allow any trigger to return to battery before pressing again. Glad you’re enjoying that cool little gun! Roy
That was a well-thought-out and well-made video. Appreciate your insight on what manufacturers are thinking. Thanks! Really interested in this gun, now.
Best concealed carry gun i have ever owned. Reliable, capacity, accuracy, easily picked up sights, double safety to carry cocked n locked. 300 rounds and trigger has smoothed out, easy to field strip with 3/16 punch. Cant say enough good.
I think they’re real sleepers. Some early internet “testers” said they had trigger issues. I watched a couple of the videos and they were riding the trigger back, not allowing it to re-set completely at times. That was a user-induced issue, not a gun issue. My fingers comes off the trigger after each shot on any autopistol. It’s easy to get used to that and doesn’t affect accuracy at all since you still control the final press. Roy
If you watch my videos and look at my trigger finger in any of them, especially the slow motion bits, you’ll see it comes all the way off. Try it. Roy Again
I saw one in my local gun store today. After watching this video I wish I'd have asked to take a look at it. The Sig 365 is my current EDC, but I'm intrigued by this particular pistol.
Returned to watch this again. Handled one some months ago, and I can appreciate its small size. Similar footprint to the J frames I enjoy so much. Planning to buy one in the next couple weeks.
Great review. I am a retired police officer who carries, and I just ordered a CSX to replace my Glock 43X (an awesome pistol) that I passed on to my LEO son. I hope I like the CSX - it felt good at the gun shop!
I think you will Jeff. Just remember to allow the trigger to reset when shooting. Many “testers” said it short stroked on them, but they forget it’s not a 1911 trigger so don’t ride it forward, just let it return completely. l’ve never had a single issue with mine and I really like it. Roy
If this is a single stack, I assume that there is a transdimensional portal in the grip somewhere that allows you to carry the 3 to 5 more rounds than a single stack in this size can carry. I just looked at one of these yesterday, and it is definitely a double stack.
Really nice video. I like that you pointed out how those of us with hand strength issues may still consider the CSX. I also prefer all metal handguns and this gun reminds me of my S&W 3913 in some ways.

CSX as Chief's Special Xperimental is the kind of thoughtful insight that makes you one of my favorite writers for Guns and AH. I mean, they did have a last gasp with the CS9 and CS45.
I've been carrying this since the week it came out. I love it. You do have to move the front sight a little bit to the left. It seems that the measurement used to press the front sights at the factory is out of wack by a little bit.
Their sight alignment has always been a hit or miss as I have several models. I always double check everything before purchasing, it’s an easy thing to overlook.
Hello and thank you for the nice video. There are a lot of negative reviews about this firearm. Basically the reset on the trigger. Myself, I was brought up with a 1911, Colt, Series 80 in a .45 and I LOVE it. I am used to an external thumb SAFETY. I LIKE the fact and am USED to the fact and idea of manually putting a firearm on safe. I also LOVE the single action. I hope to purchase one VERY soon. I was also brought up NOT learning how to keep your finger on the trigger and utilizing the reset. So I am fairly sure I will get along with this pistol. Thank you again for the video! Take care... Steve in Colorado
Steve, I think the trigger re-set “problem” isn’t a problem. I think it’s just what you say, people riding the trigger forward waiting for the re-set, but preventing it in actuality. It’s not a 1911 action so doesn’t respond like one. I let my finger come completely off the trigger on autos (other than a tuned 1911), to allow a full re-set. I’ve had zero issues with this gun so far and have several hundred rounds through my test gun at this point. I really like it! Roy H.
@@fmgpubs Thank you very much for your response! I would have to agree. I purchased a CSX last weekend and can't wait to get to the range. I will keep you updated on my results. Take care and thanks again. Steve in Colorado
Smith Wesson made a pistol called The Chief’s Special 9. Which was an automatic in 9 mm. Not the chief special revolver. Maybe the CSX stands for Chief’s Special 10.
I love the feel of the csx over the shield plus for micro compact 9mm so much so that I traded mine in after a year and a half (only lost 100 bucks). It’s like a bodyguard 380 on steroids and I can use the same size uncle mike’s 15 iwb holster. Very concealable and well made. Takedown requires some finesse, but it’s a solid option.
I love mine! Had a hiccup with a defective part early on but Smith and Wesson replaced the slide under warranty and I have now put over 1000 rounds through with zero issues. Well balanced, accurate at surprisingly long range, and easy to conceal. I know some guys moan about the trigger but after putting some rounds through, the “false reset” is not noticeable at all.
Agreed Andrew. I think that false reset is actually people riding the trigger forward and not allowing it to re-set. My fingers comes completely off the trigger when I shoot a semi-auto. With just a bit of training, it’s easy to learn and solves that issue regardless of the gun. The 1911 is user-friendly when it comes to riding the trigger to re-set, but not most others. Roy
Excellent Tina! Make sure you let the trigger re-set after each shot. Some of the “testers” ride the trigger forward and don’t allow it to completely re-set, then they complain about a “gun problem” when it’s really a shooter issue! I’ve not had a single issue with mine, but I let my finger come completely off the trigger at each shot. Roy
My daughter carries a SIG 238 and I really liked shooting it so thought I would go shopping for a 938. The gun shop I frequent suggested trying the CSX. I have a L-XL size hand and the CSX with the different sized back straps fit perfectly. Providing better control than the SIG grip, plus the increased capacity. The CSX offered equal concealability despite the thicker grip. I appendix carry and use a safariland 27-184 leather holster (made to accommodate a Ruger LC 9) and it is very comfortable and provides good retention. The "false reset" which hardly exists doesn't bother me at all. My single biggest complaint concerning the CSX is the stupid spacer on the 12 round magazine.
I’d agree about the CSX vs. the 238. On that false re-set, I’ve fired hundreds of rounds through this and not a single one. The secret is don’t ride the trigger back to reset like they do on a crisp 1911 trigger. This trigger simply isn’t designed the same. I allow my trigger finger to come completely off the trigger when shooting a semi-auto. Robbie Latham who is an old bud, showed me that trick 25 years ago or more. As he said, during competition you can’t risk an issue with reset, so letting your finger off allows a complete reset every time. And it doesn’t slow things down and is as accurate as other methods. Just ask Robbie! Roy
neat little ccw pistol. in my opinion your first group for accuracy was high left b/c you were anticipating recoil. that's why on your rapid fire group you were more centered b/c you were focusing on getting hits on target rather than anticipating recoil. i'd get more comfortable with shooting it rather than go adjusting your sights yet. fun review.
It's possibly he adjusted his aim after the first group, too. First group was possibly just to see how well it grouped. I know that's what I do when I try out a new gun. See how well it groups and where those groups are going. I'm a good enough shooter to adjust my aim to compensate for a sight that is a little off.
Thanks sir and not one word about the trigger being crap just picked mine up I love it thanks for sharing and I don't have a problem with the trigger works ok for me just the other demonstrators I guess
Les, I sure haven’t had any trigger issues. I think people may be riding the trigger to the re-set point (like many do on a 1911) but I’ve always found to let your finger actually come off the trigger, then re-press assures a re-set. If you watch me shooting you can see (in some footage) my finger comes completely off the trigger at the return, then I press again. Even when shooting faster. Rob Leatham calls it “slapping” but really you’re still pressing. He’s just so damn fast it looks like slapping! Roy H.
I found if you just allow the trigger to reset completely, there's never an issue. You can't treat it like a 4 pound 1911 trigger. I let my finger come off the trigger on each shot. Easy. I agree there's no issue! Roy
@@anthonyarcher7268 I'm comparing a 1.5 stack pocket pistol in 9x17mm to a 1.5 stack pocket pistol in 9x19mm. Seems like a perfectly valid comparison to me. That said, if you know where I can get paid to do so, please let me know so I can sign up!
@@anthonyarcher7268 Bah. Well I'll have to keep building my channel the hard way to get monetized then. With time and effort, lol. So RUclips can turn aound and demonotize me. Only 894 subscribers to go.
I saw and held one at Academy yesterday. I shoot, now, a .380 EZ (arthritis in thumbs and wrist), but I can't get this CSX out of my head. It is way more comfortable to hold, and, with my small hands and short trigger reach, unlike the EZ, it doesn't force me to awkwardly cant the pistol against the base of my thumb to get my trigger crease where it needs to be. And it very naturally aligns in my grip so that the three-dot sights are pointed and equally separated just right for trigger pull without hand to grip adjustment. I really have enjoyed the exceptional reliability of my EZ, but I think I'm going to have to switch.
Thanks Bill. You’re very kind to say that. But I’m old and have been doing this for a long time so I’d like to take credit, but it may just be experience! Roy
My gf bought the csx about a month ago. The only complaint I have about shooting it is the fact you have to complete release the trigger before firing the next round. (Stupid trigger safety) hopefully you will be able to upgrade the trigger group in the near future. Other than the blunder I did enjoy your review and it is awesome that you replied promptly and earnestly. For that sir I comend you.
My pleasure sir. I tend to get my finger completely off triggers whenever I shoot, and have never had any issues with re-set problems like many seem to. I think people who ride the trigger forward hopling to just catch the re-set, then press again, often run into trouble. Many testers of this gun had that issue, but blamed it on the gun. Enjoy that fun gun! Roy@@loringtillson1187
I bought one last week.....then had to go buy another the next day. Because she liked it and id knew I would lose it 😅. Plus they basically gave them to me. A local big box farm store had them single for 549. Or the one with the plano 5 pistol box, ear pro, eye pro and the bore cleaner for 379.99 then on top,of that they had 15 percent off of their clearance guns so it took another 50 some off as well. I love the little guy. Nice review , glad I found ya and I will like and subscribe
Thanks Jimmy. The vast majority of guns today are “good” guns. Some just need a bit of a learning curve to understand them and assure they work correctly. Plus, at times, a brand new design might have a bit of teething issues with some of the production (ours all ran great) so patience is often the best course as makers sort things out if needed. Roy H.
My edc is a S&W M&P shield 45acp perfect for any fit tight loose etc….. I have no idea why I want the CSX but it seems like a badass little gun to have 😂
It’s addictive … it’s like an Officer’s ACP but I think it’s more comfortable and certainly easier to carry. Mine has been running fine. I think the complaints you hear about trigger re-set is due to the fact so many people tend to ride the trigger forward, not allowing it to re-set. Roy
Is it a single stack? I thought it was a double stack or that 1.5 stack that micro compacts are running. I feel if you place 10 rounds of ammunition in a row, it would be much taller than the CSX
Thanks Kyle. I’m really liking this gun the more I shoot it! Also, Bill Laughridge of the Cylinder and Slide shop has one he’s customizing. I’ll be writing it up when I borrow it when he’s done. Roy
I bought one of these, luckily the only one in my entire area in stock, and I've just enjoyed it. People complain about the false reset but it's really not that bad, there is a faint click and then a normal reset. That's not something that ever caused me any issues. How do you feel about it after a year? Not seeing much anymore about them.
Agreed on the re-set. I think people are riding the trigger forward and not allowing a complete re-set. They are inducing the problem. Note when I shoot an auto, my finger actually comes off the trigger face after each shot to assure they re-set. Mine’s been running 100 percent. Roy
Thanks Frank! I’ve shot it quite a bit more since this vid and I remain impressed with it. No trigger issues either. I think that’s because I tend to come off the trigger during re-set, allowing it to re-set correctly before I press again. Roy
I've shot this at the range twice and so far I love it and would definitely consider buying one. The only real negative that I noticed last time I tried it was that the 12-round magazine wouldn't load past the 9th round or so even with an UpLula loader. Is that very common with this gun?
I read on Hickok45 review of this gun in the comments, that the spring may be installed backwards in the mag. Take it out, swap it around and it works fine. You'll have to sort through the comments there to read it exactly, but that's what I believe was the issue.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PUHLEASE show us videos on how you updated your other weapons with the flat, 1911-style triggers!!! I would (and will) replace ALL OF MINE with 1911-style triggers, if it isn't crazy complicated or expensive. Oh, and by the way, the AWESOME-IST mustache on RUclips.
Thanks for your kind comments on my mustache. It does seem to sometimes have more followers than I have! On the 1911 triggers, you can get drop-in flat faced triggers for 1911s from many sources like Brownells, Midway, etc. Apex makes flat-faced triggers for some autos like Rugers, SIGs, Springfields, etc. Does that help or did I misunderstand your question? Roy
@@fmgpubs Thanks Roy...probably, if anything, I misunderstood, but I thought you said you replaced the triggers in your NON-1911's with 1911-style triggers, AND COULD SHOW US HOW.
There’s no trigger issues. The thing occuring is people are riding the trigger back after firing and not allowing the sear to re-set completely. If you simply allow the trigger to return fully, there isn’t ever an issue. If you look you’ll see my finger comes completely off the trigger when I shoot semi-autos. Most do not have the same trigger feel as a 1911 which is more forgiving of that technique. There is no other model available as of now. Roy
I agree it is a nice gun. My only issue at this point is when there is 6 more than rounds in either of the magazines, it will not eject properly. The magazines do eject but doesn't slide out. You have to actually pull it out of the gun. Any pointers for these issues?
I’ve not had that happen with mine. Frankly, I like a magazine that stays so you don’t batter it by allowing it to drop on the ground. If you push the mag release and hold it down, will the magazine come all the way out then? I’m thinking the pressue of the mag release cross pin may be interfering. Let me know. Roy
Roy, you know I enjoy andappreciate your videos! The “inter-webs” are going on and on about a “false” reset, with this design. Obviously, you didn’t experience that. As you continue working with this gun, can you see if you can induce that situation- even on purpose? Regarding the “false reset “, I would argue it is a training problem vs. gun design problem. But I am interested in your experience going forward with the CSX (Chief’s Special Xtreme?), maybe a follow up video in a couple months?!
Rob, I swear, some people aren’t happy unless they find a fault, real or imagined. I’ve got quite a bit of shooting with this gun done now and nary an issue. I agree I think it’s operator error. Training on a single platform all the time often means people don’t transition well to others. I’ll let you if anything comes up though. Ayoob liked his so much he bought it, and he hates to spend any money! Roy H.
@@fmgpubs Thanks for the quick reply. I totally agree with your sentiment that people love to find faults, real or otherwise. I think a part of the success of the FMG’s products are the seasoned shooters who have a wide range of experience with different platforms. And that is why us readers (and now viewers) keep coming back. Now, I want to find one of those CSX to hold!!
I fondled one in my LGS when they were first introduced. It had never been fired, trigger pull was over 9lbs (measured by the salesman with me), and it had a pronounced audible and tactile click when releasing the trigger, but that did not reset the trigger. You had to fully disengage your finger from the trigger to reset the trigger. Maybe this has been fixed...especially if one of you has a 4.5lb pull on a non-modified trigger...the one I handled was terrible. Again, this one was never fired maybe 1 month after release.
I've been searching for a replacement for my LCP II, which is a headache to rack. This video has pushed the Chief's Special Xperimental to the front of the line.
Whatever I had laying around. It seems to shoot well with any sort of quality ammo. I favor Black Hills Honey Badger for carry though, and that runs fine in this gun. Roy
Strips easy, but not sure on the +P. The S&W website may tell you if you check out the gun specs. I tend to not do the +P stuff as it’s really not needed in a modern 9mm load. Roy

What a great idea, Mark. I still have the CSX and a 9mm Officers. I’ll do it! Roy H.
Roy
Good shooting Roy! That invitation to come check out the Joplin Rifle and Pistol Club still stands.
One of these days, I promise! Roy H.
Just bought a CSX and I really like this gun. Only complaint is needing a drift punch to remove the slide lock to field strip
neat little ccw pistol.
in my opinion your first group for accuracy was high left b/c you were anticipating recoil.
that's why on your rapid fire group you were more centered b/c you were focusing on getting hits on target rather than anticipating recoil.
i'd get more comfortable with shooting it rather than go adjusting your sights yet.
fun review.
It's possibly he adjusted his aim after the first group, too. First group was possibly just to see how well it grouped. I know that's what I do when I try out a new gun. See how well it groups and where those groups are going. I'm a good enough shooter to adjust my aim to compensate for a sight that is a little off.
could also be the fact he stepped 10 yards closer.
Its been my work/run tobthe store carry since its inception. I love it. Also Im a lefty so yeah.
Enjoyed the review. To the point, with zero self-hyperbole...unlike 99% of the other "Tubers" on here.
Well, that’s great to hear from you. I too get tired of the hype and arm waving on youtube. Oh .. and the “Oh my god” faces … Roy
Roy H.
@@fmgpubs that's how I do it too most of the other reviewers end up saying my 1911 don't do that thanks Roy have a great weekend
This will be my next purchase, can't wait to get my hands on one.
Love mine! Thanks Roy!
You’re welcome you guys! Roy
I love my csx especially since I’m a lefty
Very nice groupings, mag dump was excellent 👌🏼
Very kind of you to say, Texas! Roy
Double stack 1st 2 were singled and the rest are offset called a double
It reminds me a lot of the Sig Sauer 238 handgun!
Thanks for sharing your review!
I continue to enjoy this gun Steve. Thanks for commenting. Roy
Good review. Glad you didn't jump on the false reset bandwagon some others have been gasping about.
I found if you just allow the trigger to reset completely, there's never an issue. You can't treat it like a 4 pound 1911 trigger. I let my finger come off the trigger on each shot. Easy. I agree there's no issue! Roy
like your style. Good job
Thanks Adrian. We’re just all shooters here so it feels like I’m talking to friends. Because I am! Roy
20oz unloaded for the CSX is 5oz HEAVIER than a FULLY LOADED 13 shot Ruger LCP Max.
What’s the comparison to the max-9 9x19 tho cause those are closer to the same size tbh
@@Kiffyyy thats a polymer gun bro thats the difference except the max comes with fiber sights and 12 round magazine
life card is the lightest one but doesn’t kill hummingbird
Good HD video. Thanks
I really have enjoyed the exceptional reliability of my EZ, but I think I'm going to have to switch.
....I kept seeing them in gun magazines and I couldn't get it out of my head or stop looking at them. I bought one....
Love this man and his mustache
Very kind of you to say! Roy
You are very good at what you do.
Thanks Bill. You’re very kind to say that. But I’m old and have been doing this for a long time so I’d like to take credit, but it may just be experience! Roy
I just found the CRX, as I am looking for a off duty 9mm. And my favorite Sheriff is going to cover all the info. on it. Thanks Sheriff.
I think you’ll really like this one if you haven’t gotten it yet. Accurate, easy to shoot, carries well, what’s not to like! Roy
I can not believe you are a professional . That is a double stack mag. Wow!
I know …. I know … I was thinking about the single action trigger, then lost my mind ….
A screaming deal for sure! Thanks for subscribing. Nose around our channel I have hundreds of videos and we also have lots more from others Roy
The CSX is a DOUBLE Stack not single.
Yeah … I was so focused on it being single action it just came out! Roy
Finally a positive review!!!!
Roy H.
...great quality video...thanks....
You’re welcome Rick. Thanks for letting us know! Roy
Roy
Looks very nice!!! Greetings!!!
Thanks Jose! Roy
Is it a single stack? I thought it was a double stack or that 1.5 stack that micro compacts are running. I feel if you place 10 rounds of ammunition in a row, it would be much taller than the CSX
It’s a double stack, kinda. I had the fact it was single action on my mind and it sort of slipped out! Roy
Excellent video great gun
Nice review.
I like what I see I’ve wanted one but I don’t see them often.
Forgot to say ,Great video
Solid review buddy!
Thanks Kyle. I’m really liking this gun the more I shoot it! Also, Bill Laughridge of the Cylinder and Slide shop has one he’s customizing. I’ll be writing it up when I borrow it when he’s done. Roy
I have one and I like it. My new carry gun.
I really like the design too. Roy
I would like to see the CSX in 30 Super Carry. Great review.
It’d be perfect for that, Pat. I’ll “remind” ‘em! Roy
I carried the hellcat until my son bought me the CSX for Christmas last year. And the CSX out performs the hellcat in every way. Hands down!!!
Glad to hear that Bill. I think it’s a swell gun. Roy
I want one 😍
I looked at one of those decided not to buy it because I still have a S&W 3914 which I really like! Great video.
I always thought those 3914s were a sort of “perfect” gun in their own way. But I confess this new CSX is pretty darn cool too! Roy
@@fmgpubs I agree. My 3914 works well in a shoulder rig and I bet the CSX would too!
Roy
I have one. I'll get another when it comes out in 30 Super Carry.
It’d be a perfect platform for that cartridge! Roy
Great review! I want one.
I assumed that CSX stood for Chief Special 10 (shot.) That looks like a nice gun, Roy. Good shooting.
Thanks Frank! I’ve shot it quite a bit more since this vid and I remain impressed with it. No trigger issues either. I think that’s because I tend to come off the trigger during re-set, allowing it to re-set correctly before I press again. Roy
The CSX would be a decent candidate for the 30 super carry if it hangs around.
Boy howdy!
CSX that's a Railroad gun. and it's on my short list!
Nice stache, bro!
If i didn't already have s Shield id have to consider this pistol
Very similar idea but I do like the fact this is single action. Roy
Looks like a great gun. Garrett thinks a lot of you.
Hey Mark, thanks for taking the time to say hi. Garrett is a swell fellow! Roy H.
I like this gun. Will buy it in near future. I like hammer fired pistols.
Cool.
My edc, I love it
Is there any 4" alternative to this without trigger problem? TNX for video.
Roy
@@fmgpubs thanks sir. For full answer 👍
Might be my perfect gun if it was da/sa and had a decocker/hammerblock safety
Get a cheetah berreta then lol
I feel like these might be collectible one day
Might be right as they don’t sell a lot of them. Which is strange because it’s a cool gun.
I just picked one up and it does not have a false reset.
It has a trigger pull around 4.5 pounds and breaks clean.
I really like this pistol!
Looks like a cross between a 1911 Officers ACP and the Smith 39-14.
That’s a pretty good take on it. Look at the heritage it comes from and you might be a “bit” right there! Roy H.
DA/SA and this would be perfect.
I've been searching for a replacement for my LCP II, which is a headache to rack. This video has pushed the Chief's Special Xperimental to the front of the line.
Also check out the S&W EZ 380 and Ruger’s new Security 380. They have a light rack slide and are a joy to handle and shoot. Roy
Question... what ammo are u using .. ?
Everyone that's having great accuracy what ammo are u running
Whatever I had laying around. It seems to shoot well with any sort of quality ammo. I favor Black Hills Honey Badger for carry though, and that runs fine in this gun. Roy
Is it plus p rated. And how well does it feild strip?
Strips easy, but not sure on the +P. The S&W website may tell you if you check out the gun specs. I tend to not do the +P stuff as it’s really not needed in a modern 9mm load. Roy
I really like mine
I looked at one but the trigger reset issue bothered me. Going to go with the SIG 365.
Solid choice! Several on our team are big fans of the P365.
Ist his one a little bigger than a pocket pistol like the LCP?
Barely
I haven't seen anything on this pistol for a couple of years? Was it discontinued?
No, they still make it. I still like it! Roy
@fmgpubs thanks Roy
