Watching this again after a few years I am even more flabbergasted. He makes such beautiful sounds and builds such perfect musical structures, if he only ever just played solo guitar [instead of heading ensembles], it would be more than enough.
What i like about Pat's playing is not so much the obvious proficiency level, articulation and pyrotechnics - it is his musical nature, he always approaches each piece to bring out the music, not to dazzle with modal athletics.
What is amazing is the connections between ideas, the fluency, the rythm and the speed. I would be happy to play this at 75% of his speed. What a beast, my idol! From 3:32 it is just sick. You said triplets...
Absolutely agree with you. I've been playing this warm up on and off for about six months. The problem with me is not the speed, but things like adjusting the pick to cover the vast amount of fretboard, some of the arps variations, the misplaced triads as triplets, and the fluent chromatics. It's not impossible, but I like said this exercise quickly revealed my weak areas and helped me stay focused. I think I can have this down in another 3 months that if I play it everyday. Also his approach to altered chords is brilliant.
This illustrates the difference between a guitarist and a musician (great difference , to me at least !) Metheny is the complete package. The fact that you can watch someone noodling for more than 30 seconds, because he is doing something with those notes, rather than just play scales up & down mechanically. I only know another guy at this level, Jonathan Kreisberg... and yes, I am a quite mediocre guitarist :)
4:52 - He plays the chromatic scale ascending and descending with four fingers, then again with three (no pinky) you need to be able to do your runs both with and without the pinky.
i love this video. you guys remember that one where he puts the click up to the mic and plays turnaround? i can't find it anymore and it's super awesome like this one.

A lot of the right hand picking motion comes from the fingers, as if he’s pecking at the notes from above. other players seem to pick in a much more uniform, economical way from the wrist to the elbow, but at the expense of articulation, especially when playing without distortion. Unique.
You’re right, compared to some of the guys you see on RUclips know, Pat’s right hand doesn’t show great economy of motion. I’m not a guitarist, but I wonder if it has something to do with the unconventional way Pat holds his pick. I’ve heard him say in two different interviews, speaking to young guitarists: “Don’t hold the pick the way I do.” But I don’t know exactly what he does that’s “wrong.”
I’m not a guitarist, but I’ve done the same thing with a couple of piano books that I bought and later realized, “There’s no way in hell I am ever going to play this.”
And he does all that with his weird right hand picking grip! You can get that pinched yet fat/hollow sound but boy, its really difficult to play fast with metheny's right hand picking grip.
Rubbish, he knows how to practice. Still it's great to worry about trivial shit whilst practicing with no control. Maybe watch youtube videos of some arse focusing on the wrong things, in slow mo, for morons.

His warm ups are a concert in itself...
I definitely hear the harmony via the arpeggios, and I often hear a Bach influence....
Pat Metheny is a musical genius and a Guitar Titan.
His tone and articulation is flawless.
Man...I can listen to this all day long and never get bored!
Pat Metheny is one my favourite guitarists. Excellent musician, very much in touch with his inner ear.
I'm sitting here mesmerized watching someone play SCALES 😂
Watching this again after a few years I am even more flabbergasted.
He makes such beautiful sounds and builds such perfect musical structures, if he only ever just played solo guitar [instead of heading ensembles], it would be more than enough.
He has two solo albums: What It's All About and One Quiet Night. More new age-y and self-indulgent for my tastes tbh, nothing like this clip.
Pat is just one of my absolute favorite guitar players... even when he makes a mistake, it sounds good! A true pro!!
Probably because his time is impeccable...
What i like about Pat's playing is not so much the obvious proficiency level, articulation and pyrotechnics - it is his musical nature, he always approaches each piece to bring out the music, not to dazzle with modal athletics.
Well, whatever man...describe it as you will.
Who you jiving , man?
Michael Gorman Well, I am still dazzled though!
Says the person hiding behind an anonymous identity-no courage!
I am not saying his 'ability' is not impressive, rather his approach is respectful of the music-tis all.
