Diorio, is an incredible accompanist. His chord vocabulary is far beyond most other guitar players and his melody lines are belonging as well to the top ten of all Jazz-guitarists since Montgomery. It is sad, that he never reached the fame of Metheny, whose CD "Question and Answer" is to me one of the best Jazz-guitar albums of all times.
Joe's teacher, Vincent Bredice, had a Master's in Music Theory. Joe knew every thing he was doing as a well schooled guitarist. If you studied with Vince, you had to learn the material and play it. Vince, rarely mentioned, was brilliant and a contributing factor to Joe's incredible style. Pat is another one of a kind guitarist that loves his instrument and has aa wonderful style. God bless Joe and Vince, as they have both passed, leaving behind a bar that few musicians will surpass but can learn from eternaly in Jazz and musicianship.
Both guitarists are brilliant. I studied with Joe's early teacher, Vincent Bredice, who little credit is given to. Vince had a Masters degree in music theory that few have. Vince played in Segovia Master classes when he was young and I was one of the few students that ever heard him play classical guitar. Vince taught at Miami Dade Community College for years. He was always an inspiration and a brilliant teacher and musician. I miss him as a teacher and friend. He is rarely mentioned as are so many great musicians and teachers. Everyone wants the limelight but few ever credit the teachers that enabled them to reach that level. One year Vince had a guitar seminar and Tal Farlow was there, another amazing guitar player. Then, another seminar with Joe Diorio. Joe knew theory as well as he played. He was one of the nicest and humble musicians I have ever seen or met, even at his level he would talk about anything you would ask in music or guitar. He had nothing to hide. God Bless Joe and Vince for leaving the world, students and musicians in a better place and raising the bar. I hope that Pat will continue to play and inspire others to become great or above average players dedicated to guitar. Joe and Vince, RIP.

Joe Diorio is one of the most underrated jazz guitarists of all time!! He's up there w/Pass/Montgomery/Martino, etc. And of course Metheny...
Yeah … that was during my year at GIT (93/94) … Pat played so understated and musical …. and later that evening he played with the Joshua Redman Quartet @ Catalina Bar&Grill and “burned the house down” 🔥😅 What a great time we had 🙏🏼🥰 … thank you MI to have graced us with performances of this caliber throughout our time there … unforgettable ❣️❣️❣️

It's like Joe could almost predict what notes Pat will choose to play, and building his own comp by it. Absolutely mindblowing.

Súper I saw them both just like this, 1989 -90 when I studied at MI , maybe this is the concert, fabulous both, I was always at Joes workshops.

all the voicing are so wide open that Metheny could play any pitch and it would have worked ... "All the things you ain't" ;-)
Ive been playing for 45 years and I am still amazed that 2 musicians have the same access to 12 notes, yet approach those notes entirely different. Wonderful duo. RIP JD.

Joe was probably the only guy at MIT that could keep up and play standard tunes with Pat.
Joe played so many chord voicings in the first 10 minutes that my head is spinning. Wow.
Was at this show. I have an incredibly thick binder of chords that Joe showed me over a year, every Tuesday and Thursday. A very kind person.

@@GeraldoHBulhoes1 Well, it was 4-5 years before this. They did this exact duo at GIT in 1989, and then again, which is this performance in 1993 or 94. I was there! I just cannot remember if it was 1993 or 1994.

I did GIT from 1987 to 88 And This first concert you said ,was already available in The school for students watch or listen . I used to have This tape recording ( haha ) , we didn’t have Cd Recorder avaliáble in that time yet . Thanks for The confirmation Vincent . All The Best ! At the very beginning of Pat's solo on Insensatez I can hear a note that he actually doesn't play. I cannot make out where this not is coming from. Any idea?

The camera operator has a Metheny fetish. Diorio is ripping during "Old Folks" and the camera is practically fixed on PM.

Pat went several times everywhere and the concert in 1979 was here too, but with the Pat Metheny Group. ;)

Wish PM used this tone through his career. This sounds less processed to me.
He likes reverb/delay, but if you're referring to the chorus sound, he ditched that more than 30 yrs ago.

Couldn't agree more. As 'timeless' as great art might be, it still requires the context of time, for that is also what enhances its impact, provides perspective and also for the sake of the player' development, a 'simple' - but crucial - thing as a date, informing when it happened makes all the difference and also enhances the significance of human creativity.
I probably shouldn't say this, but I prefer Joe's solos in this setting; he seems more harmonically and rhythmically developed than Pat.

As much as I like this and have liked pat since the late 70’s joe pass and Wes Montgomery are light years ahead of these guys Wes is the man also jahn Ackerman from focus who is still around today making great jazz at 74 years of age

i once heard an interview with a jazz guitar legend, can not remember which one, but he talked about metheny and that he is often underestimated for his soft sounding slow stuff. then he said, he is 100 percent sure that if metheny would play fast bebop with the legends of bebop guitar, he would smoke anybody in terms of speed creativity and crazy licks. here you go. :D

@@davidsheriff9274 Some msuicians are just "borned" to be fast, and others to be slow. And this is ok. But when it gets to be some kind of a competition of tempo, and more and more notes, it's just not music any more... at least less music can take place.
