Update: I've gotten a lot of comments and now I know it's not normal for a loctician to not make sure the rest of your hair is good outside of reties! Y'all I've been bamboozled by these people and I want to fight 😭 since posting this video, I've experienced 2 more locticians and I'm ready to write a book called "Surviving loctician trauma" 😭
I had microlocs for about 2.5 years….i just combined my micros back to traditional locs. Backstory: I had traditional locs for about 15 years prior. My hair grew to about 17-18”. I had length and no volume. I felt that I wanted volume so I cut and got micros. I won’t go into the details but the short story is that the financial investment versus the changing behavior of the loctition was not worth it to me anymore. I gave it up I’m back to traditional locs. I’m loving my babies!!!! I feel better. I’m 4c then banded the bottom with a rubber band until the merge together maybe after my next wash. I thought about reattaching but I spoke with another loctition and she gave her reasons of why she didn’t really care to do it. I agreed. Your video is great! Advice I would give is like you mentioned…. Keep your hand out or your head!!!!!! I’m sooooooooo guilty!
Thanks for sharing your story! I agree, the financial investment vs navigating their behavior is exhausting! I'm about to drop a video tomorrow because I had some more issues with the loctitian.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I install microbraids, and what I have found to be true is that many locticians do not do more beyond a re-tie if not paid for the service. I have always believed that whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might. In other words, always give your very best at what you do. It would be hard for me to re-tie a braidloc without manicuring it. This is the service I have always performed when re-tying locs and without cost to my clients. I do hope you find your special loctician😊
Very helpful video! I cut out that braiding and banding at around 3 months. Shockingly, I didnt experience much unravelling aside from on my ends. I'm 6 months in now and I love the look of my locs. I am experiencing some bunching, but nothing that I'm concerned about. Good luck on your new set!
Thank you! So far, I love this set. I'm also glad your locs are still looking great without it. I can't wait to get to the point where I don't have to anymore
Your loctition was wrong. Who ever told you that stupid story is also wrong. If you have to ask someone to do what they are trained to do, RUN. Evaluation of the hair that you are doing is something that should be automatic.
That's what I assumed too!!! But the fact that the first loctitian didn't do that for me, and the second one told me it's an add-on charge. At this point, I don't know what's normal or not. Where I live, I unfortunately can't be choosy except I'm willing to drive 6-7 hours roundtrip to find another loctitian who may just do the same thing 🙃
@@astoldbymeso I wish stylist and hair care '"professionals" would do what they are trained to do but most wont. So it is up to each one of us to research and learn out hair and scalp and nutrition and auto immune diseases.
This was my experience, and I agree w/you. I felt like I was not being taught how to care for my investment, all along, and, at each stage. I was always having to ask when issues arose. The majority of what I learned, was from my own research! That did NOT seem like a sustainable relationship going forward, for me. Because she NEVER braided & banded my hair when she washed it, yet, I DID, when I washed my hair myself, I blame her for so much bunching! I asked her why she never braided & banded, and she ACTUALLY told me that, that was only for those w/ sisterlocs!!!Needless to say, I parted ways w/that loctician.

Ive bren two stranding big chunks and bantu knotting them to just orotect and keep my HANDS out of it!!!!😂😂😂😂😅😅😅❤
I’m at 2.5yrs as of today…I definitely experienced bunching, most likely due to not braiding/banding consistently. The bunching was towards the end of my loc, so at around month 15, I cut below the thick part of the bunching…it just annoyed me how it was “skinny, thick, skinny.” I ended up cutting ab 3-4 inches off the majority of my locs.

But i use 2 caps where water still get in on sides. Believe the typical 🙄 creamy mostiureizer you put o. B4 swim 🏊♀️ not good to loosen loc. 😮 Appreciate the info❤🎉
Yes! I would hold off for as long as possible. With the cap I recommended, no water should get through, it's fantastic quality. Just make sure to get the right size.
I needed this video 😭 I was over braiding and banding by month 4 and have been paying the price. I'm 1.5 years in and not a day passes by that I don't consider cutting it off and starting over. Giving it 6 more months while I study for my boards. Your current set looks gorgeous!

I’ve felt the sameee way about my new Microlocs. This video has been super comforting and helpful. Still not sure what I am doing but I feel hopeful now!😊
Less than two months in and I’ve already made 5 of these mistakes 😫😤😱. This video has been really helpful as I now know where I’m going wrong. The loctician I used suggested the two strand twist method for me because I was not 💯 confident that I’ll like my hair in locks as I have feathery 4C hair with low density but high porosity, yeah crazy combo. She initially did gel twists not locked, and I was meant to wear it for 4-6weeks before finally locking, however they started to unravel very quickly and I went back to lock it less than two weeks after. Again this only lasted just under three weeks before some had started to unravel and some strands were breaking off at the tips (due to dryness, she told me not to wash or put any products so my hair was really dry, not sure if this was good advice) and some were thinning out unevenly along the strands. Now I’m going to a different loctician to see how my new locks can be salvaged without combing out and starting all over again 😫
I'm surprised that they were breaking off after actually locking it. Did you interlock the second time around? Or you just put in twists like the first time? The good thing is you're still just a few weeks in so if you hate it, you could comb it out without losing a lot of hair.
@@astoldbymeso Thanks for replying to my comment. Not sure why I’m just seeing it now even though you sent it a month ago. Yes she said she locked it the second time but honestly she did a shoddy job of it as my next loctician revealed. She did the locking properly making it my third attempt. It’s now been almost 6weeks since that third time and I’ll be going back for a retie next week. Can you please advise if I need to moisturise often because the dryness I’m experiencing is too much. I’m going to ask the new lady too but I’d like to know what you think. PS: I’ve always suffered with dry scalp even before getting locks so not moisturising frequently is taking its toll on my hair. Thanks 🙏🏾
Also not sure why I'm just seeing this. Honestly, I would say to go with what your loctician says since she's the one maintaining your hair. Personally, I started moisturizing from the start, but only with water. As time passed, I introduced very light leave-in conditioner like once a week. I don't have issues with really dry scalp so I've been fine. I really feel like loc rules are not a one-size-fits-all and you may just need to listen to what your own hair/scalp needs.
Dry clean and wash? Huh? Im 41 and i have never heard that. Clean is in dry clean. Lol. But anyway, I did not know that they wouldn't say anything about the condition of your locs during the reties. Very informative videos.
So someone in the comments said that when they dryclean, they wash with some type of solvent and not water. At this point, I don't know anymore. Thank you for watching!
Dry cleaning is washing. Stop believing what people say and fact check. Google is your friend. Dry cleaning is washing without water but using a chemical solvent. The machine washes, steams and dries your clothing.
I'm not a loctitian, but it's hard to believe that is the standard. I understand more time and possibly more money will be needed for repairs, but she should have at least informed you about your hair. My current loctitian didn't establish my locs, but she keeps me updated regarding their health as well as my scalp.
I started with braid locs twist locs didn't go well with my hair. I had to comb out my first set which was the twist locs now I've been loced for two years and I'm so in love but my advice to everyone is to start with braid locs. The two-strand twist is a no-no. It's too much work and too many problems.
Braid locs are definitely the best way to go if you're not interlocking from the start but they take so much longer to install and most people don't want to sit that long. Glad you're enjoying the ones you have now!
I disagree. I started mine (my sons and daughters too)with 2 strands, never braided and banded and they never unraveled. I think it's just different for each person. Also, my hair is not dense to start and braidlocs give you the most compact look because the hairs can't expand within the loc and the braid pattern can take a long time to go away, if ever for some. Different strokes for different folks🤷🏾♀️
Started my micro locs with two strand twist in January '23. My hair is doing great. My daughter and I installed them. Found a great loctition to maintain interlocking.
What’s scary about hairstylist I’ve come across so far is that they don’t care about the health of your hair anymore just the final style or what you paid for
I include maintenance in all of my clients' hair reties free of charge. I would not be doing my job if I did not maintain them properly and educate you on how to properly care for your hair. Everything I do would be for nought if they are not properly maintained. I know I could charge more, but for me it's not all about the money. Truly... IJS!
Thank you for being one of the good ones! As much as I believe you should be paid your worth, for some women, their hair appt is the only time they can access luxury. It helps to have a loctitian that isn't trying to charge for every breath you take.
Hie.. can you start micro locs with regular twist on relaxed hair, then interlock later when there is new growth.. please help… lm thinking about starting sister locks cause l hve relaxed hair
Hi, I believe you can start on relaxed hair but it's going to be very difficult to keep it from unraveling. Straight hair just doesn't hold as well as unprocessed hair. You could research others who loc'd on relaxed hair on RUclips
@@astoldbymeso I definitely have bunching on some of my locs, but I'm much too lazy to do anything but wait and see how they turn out over time. I'm only 8 months in.
Idk if my hair is just incredibly nappy but I started my locs with 2 strand twists, never braided and banded, and nothing happened😭😭 should I still start doing it just in case?
It’s not easy to find a lotician who truly takes care of your hair and knows really how to maintain the hair. They just like to retwist and go. I’m a former hairstylist and I could never see myself gaining a client and not taking full care of their hair.
Wow i finished my (first ever set) micro locs July 10, 2023, yay same start date🥳🥳! QUESTIONS: Did you start your new set of locs with two strand twists again or interlocked from ends to root? How many locks do you have?
Yes loc twin!!! I started the new ones with two strand twists again. My arms would have fallen off if I interlocked from ends to roots. Right now, I don't know how many because it's too much to count and I'm lazy 😩
@@astoldbymeso I chickened out for Tuesday lol. But got my life together and ended up having them installed the following Saturday. I love them. I cannot believe I did it but I did and now I’m so happy
I think I’m going through loc envy. I started micro loc twist and it’s very frizzy and I want neater locs but I’m also scared that if I restart with interlocs instead of twist that it won’t be as full. Idk what to do
From what I've heard, the frizziness goes away as your locs mature, except if you had really loose natural hair (Type 3C-4A). Are you maintaining with interlocking?
I knew dry cleaning isn’t washing, it in the name Dry….. Cleaning 😅 Thank you for the advice I’m researching micro locs and probably would have done the same thing with my new locs when I start
Hi, dry cleaning is another method of cleaning delicate fabrics with organic solvents. I believe this method was invented by an African American as well...js. dry cleaning doesn't use water, that's all. 😊
I'm guilty of all except the bonnet. I do wear my bonnet religiously. I also started my Locs with a two strand twist at home. I see a loctian for reties, she usually fix any bunching she see. But after seeing this, I will braid and band. I will also not go swimming with it loose 😢 this video was just for me. I too have been going rouge and doing my own thang.
Braiding and banding is taking sections of your locs and literally braiding it (think of box braids but larger sections) and folding the ends with rubber bands, hair ties etc. The point is to keep your locs from slipping and unraveling - which is the most frustrating thing about starter locs. There's tons of videos on RUclips about it.
Sounds like your initial loctician was an ass! I'm ready to get my microlocs started like YESTERDAY...Im hesitant because many of the locticians Ive reached out to jus seem impatient, jaded, overbooked...generally not welcoming...almost as if youre asking a superstar for a favor just by inquiring about their services...such a turn off!
Yup! I really think it's because of this new boom in people wanting to get locked. They know they'll get clients regardless so there's no desire for exceptional customer service.
@ joinmommy Sounds like most of your “typical hair stylist” here in Australia 😆🤣…geez at least give me a reply of a yes or no through text. Literally leaving you on seen when u inquire about service.
Sorry you're experiencing that, I'm a stylist of 25+ and I want micro locks and THINKING about doing them. I would never treat my business that way...I still love what I do and will make it my business to take care as long as the client allows it ... sometimes THEY are the ones who won't do what needs to be done to take extra care of their hair for the sake of convenience....anyhoo I hope you find a reliable person....🙏🏿.....Ms D
Also lint is sometimes unavoidable unless you are very intentional about the kinds of Clothes you wear.. if you ever run in to lint again.. you can do a color rinse.. mask it
I'm a month in and I was really loving it until this morning. Ugh I know it's a process 😩 I will be very happy once they're a little longer tho. Im considering cheating and getting extentions
I understand! I'd say do whatever makes you feel most comfortable. They take a while to shrink, loc and then drop but I understand many people don't like the short phase.
I don’t know who your dealing with but if who does your loc retie should say something thing to you and should assess your hair because that is just good customer service and will ensure your patronage. When they give you the ex sample like u got run because it’s just a matter of time before something happens and makes u feel comfortable.
I am a loctician in MD. I inspect my clients Microlocs always; especially transfer clients. I will let you know; it then up to you if you like to continue. If the damage is too bad; I will not service your hair unless we will first fix it because I will NOT be responsible for further loc damage. I loc all my clients locs. Every stylist is different
As a professional should! Your clients are lucky. I honestly prefer for someone to be brutally honest with me so I can know how to realistically proceed.
The only great loctician is myself, no loctician has ever satisfied me, they just retit shabily to quickly finish up n grab next client, and true that they don’t care about your hair when they didn’t start it, so needless paying them so much if I won’t even get a great job or a feedback.. I learned to retit by myself and save my money and all the drama at locticians…
The assumption about the loctitian caring for the loc is so true. I was going to mine for reties and several months later I noticed a very thin based loc. I wonder why she would not bring this up or address it for something that will need close monitoring. Soon enough I just stopped going to her for my reties because it wasn't worth it. I started my own reties which was time consuming but at least I was able to monitor my strands better and catch things. That loctitian lady was just retying and giving no other services.
I really think this is coming from people who are not formally trained. Like people who maybe took a quick loc course or learned on RUclips and started doing it as a business. Based on some other comments, people who are properly trained care for the whole hair and not just the new growth during reties. It's unfortunate
Literally same with me, my Loctician was doing reties ONLY . I didn’t have a healthy set of sister locks & didn’t even know until I moved states & went to get a consult before my next retie ….. I didn’t have time to comb mine out so I literally cut my locs off 🥴
As a loctician I hear horror stories and it is true that many will just take the money and just give you your service. However that is solely on the stylist every service should be a conversation of the health and general maintenance of the hair.
I'm so sorry. They combined it without your consent? I would say go back and ask to uncombine them especially since you didn't ask for that OR if this just happened in your last retie, you can uncombine them yourself. It will take a lot of effort & patience. Hopefully they only combined a few and not a lot.
You had a bad loction...how can she not tell you she can see your hair. That is bad practice smh. She did not have to start your locs to give you advice.

@@astoldbymeso Thanks 🤩
Dry clean and wash? Huh? Im 41 and i have never heard that. Clean is in dry clean. Lol. But anyway, I did not know that they wouldn't say anything about the condition of your locs during the reties. Very informative videos.
So someone in the comments said that when they dryclean, they wash with some type of solvent and not water. At this point, I don't know anymore. Thank you for watching!
@@astoldbymeso thank you again and that does make sense. I never actually thought about it.
I had no idea that dry cleaning wasn't washing. In my defense, the fact that 'cleaning' is in the name kinda throws me off. lol
Girl same! It doesn't make any sense
Dry cleaning is washing. Stop believing what people say and fact check. Google is your friend. Dry cleaning is washing without water but using a chemical solvent. The machine washes, steams and dries your clothing.
Me either and I'm 40 lol
I'm not a loctitian, but it's hard to believe that is the standard. I understand more time and possibly more money will be needed for repairs, but she should have at least informed you about your hair. My current loctitian didn't establish my locs, but she keeps me updated regarding their health as well as my scalp.
And that's how it should be! I felt like (and still feel like) I'm begging for scraps
It’s 1 in a million loctician. They’re very pompous and don’t care, they only put in the work to people they started their Locs…
Great advice for the swimming. thanks for sharing

Sis. Aaa3g3
What’s scary about hairstylist I’ve come across so far is that they don’t care about the health of your hair anymore just the final style or what you paid for
Yup and I hate that!
#3 is definitely me, I only lasted 5 months doing braiding and banding before I got sick of it.
Did you develop any issues after you stopped?
@@astoldbymeso I definitely have bunching on some of my locs, but I'm much too lazy to do anything but wait and see how they turn out over time. I'm only 8 months in.
You're better than me, sometimes I wish I had just waited out my old set. Do you have large or smaller locs?
@@astoldbymeso I have microlocs. I installed them myself. About 340 of them.
Great information. Thanks for your honesty
Thank you for sharing! Recently DIY my microlocs and just want to get them to that matured stage with the least amount of complications. 🤦🏾♀️
I get it! Good luck! 🤞🏾
Idk if my hair is just incredibly nappy but I started my locs with 2 strand twists, never braided and banded, and nothing happened😭😭 should I still start doing it just in case?
If it's doing fine, I'd say don't worry about it. How long have you been loc'd?
It’s not easy to find a lotician who truly takes care of your hair and knows really how to maintain the hair. They just like to retwist and go. I’m a former hairstylist and I could never see myself gaining a client and not taking full care of their hair.
Right?!! And for the $$$ I'm dropping, I expect more.
@@astoldbymeso You have a beautiful set of locs! Thank you for sharing your loc journey with us through amazing quality videos😍
I loced on the 1st of July, and now I'm combing them out and starting again... The tears I am crying

Awesome tips! I'm looking forward to restarting my locs🥰
You got this!
For tip 1, braid and band during wash day or outside of wash day too?
I only do it for wash day!
I had bunching but I started palm rolling and they went away
Love that for you! I wasn't so lucky 😔
Welp looka there...I just learned something new too! I had know idea they don't wash (unless requested) at the cleaners 😮😊
So helpful. My installation is Tuesday
I hope you love your install 🙌🏾
@@astoldbymeso I chickened out for Tuesday lol. But got my life together and ended up having them installed the following Saturday. I love them. I cannot believe I did it but I did and now I’m so happy
👏🏾 So proud of you! I hope you continue to love them at every phase! ❤️
Thank you so much for information.
You're welcome!
Great advice, very informative 👍
Glad it was helpful!
I knew dry cleaning isn’t washing, it in the name Dry….. Cleaning 😅 Thank you for the advice I’m researching micro locs and probably would have done the same thing with my new locs when I start
😂 I had to think about it, if cleaning isn't washing, then what is the 'dry' part about 😂 Thanks for watching!
Hi, dry cleaning is another method of cleaning delicate fabrics with organic solvents. I believe this method was invented by an African American as well...js. dry cleaning doesn't use water, that's all. 😊
@MsKBToyz, Thanks for the insight!
Must be nice to have a loctician that fixes your bunches as they go 😭
For those of us that don’t know, what is “ Braid and band”?
Braiding and banding is taking sections of your locs and literally braiding it (think of box braids but larger sections) and folding the ends with rubber bands, hair ties etc. The point is to keep your locs from slipping and unraveling - which is the most frustrating thing about starter locs. There's tons of videos on RUclips about it.
Oh okay! Thank you for enlightening me because out of all the loc videos I’ve watched, you’re the first I’ve heard mention that!
Of course! I'll be making a video on how I braid and band soon so make sure to subscribe!
Thank you bc I never heard of that
@@FeliciaBrown-h2n. Me to. I was gonna ask this same question.
Also lint is sometimes unavoidable unless you are very intentional about the kinds of
Clothes you wear.. if you ever run in to lint again.. you can do a color rinse.. mask it
Good to know! I've given up on the back of my locs. Does a color rinse use henna?
thank you for being honest! this is amazing.
Thank you for watching!
If my dry clean doesn’t include wash 🧐 we might have a problem.
😂😂 technically it's washed, just not with water
Wow! Thank you 👍🏾
You are so welcome!
At what stage should it start to braid and band please, I just started mine now for 4 days ago
You should probably start when you first install your locs but don't stress if you didn't!
I don’t know who your dealing with but if who does your loc retie should say something thing to you and should assess your hair because that is just good customer service and will ensure your patronage. When they give you the ex sample like u got run because it’s just a matter of time before something happens and makes u feel comfortable.
Yep!!!
Looove this video, soooo informative. Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks for watching! ❤️
My hands were in my hair when you started with number 5. Its not easy yooh😂
Ngl my hands are still in my hair A LOT! When I'm not busy, I put on my bonnet to keep myself from playing with it.

Thanks Sis!

I have 4c hair, and started my locs with braids but they still unraveled.

Right?!! It's funny that since this video, I've gone to two other locticians and now back to doing my own reties
What is braiding and banding
Great question! I have a video on it here ruclips.net/video/GHZfEz3np3M/видео.html

Welcome!!
How did you comb your locs out? I want to comb mine out for that same reason
I just took a tiny rat tail comb, conditioner, water, and combed it out for weeks. I'm loc'd back up though! ☺️
What is loc and band?
I have a video on this ruclips.net/video/GHZfEz3np3M/видео.html
Literally same with me, my Loctician was doing reties ONLY . I didn’t have a healthy set of sister locks & didn’t even know until I moved states & went to get a consult before my next retie ….. I didn’t have time to comb mine out so I literally cut my locs off 🥴
I'm so sorry this happened to you. Was the person an official sisterlock consultant?
Hand in hair syndrome and lock jealousy, I'm a big big culprit 😭😭😭 4 months into my journey
You're not alone! 🙋🏾♀️
As a loctician I hear horror stories and it is true that many will just take the money and just give you your service. However that is solely on the stylist every service should be a conversation of the health and general maintenance of the hair.
I think that's why I've been so confused with the locticians I've gone to. It's a shame
I had locs with extensions for a year now and just by watching this video i feel like im doing everything wrong 😭
I'm sure you're fine lol I don't know how much different it is maintaining regular vs extensions
When you greet your guest you are supposed to ask what they want and have a consultation

Girl!! Not even with a cap on!??? 😂
🫣 Officer, I'm innocent
Don’t add conditioner or oil for the first 6mths when you start your locs you don’t want them to unravel
I agree! Unraveling wasn't a huge issue for me though because of my texture
My loctician joined my microlocs, i want to cry so bad
Someone help me
Give me advice
I'm so sorry. They combined it without your consent? I would say go back and ask to uncombine them especially since you didn't ask for that OR if this just happened in your last retie, you can uncombine them yourself. It will take a lot of effort & patience. Hopefully they only combined a few and not a lot.
You had a bad loction...how can she not tell you she can see your hair. That is bad practice smh. She did not have to start your locs to give you advice.
Shame on those locticians!
Bunching is what is happening to me

Now I know it was just a tactic to get more money out of me. I finally walked away from her 😔
Nah, she is already looking at your scslp and hair when she reties off she cares about her clients she would tell you.
