ELM sound designer here. Agree or disagree with AI, the debate is interesting to see. Yes we put in some significant work to mix all the audio just like you would with actual recorded sound fx/music, but it was crazy to see AI do as well as it did, even if it’s not perfect.

Sound Editor and Mixer here. How long did it take you guys to go through the entire process for one of these clips?
These types of videos make it seem like yall just typed a few words, hit a few keys and boom: you have a scene. I know you mentioned you had to do the mixing but can you go more in depth with your process? I'd love to talk to you guys about it!

    • @stephen1moyer

@@BoomMikeAudio Yeah, so we spent a decent amount of time generating sounds until we found something that fit. Sometimes it would go quickly sometimes it’d take us a while. Ultimately started off with finding sounds for the key elements of the scene, and then got more detailed from there. Mixing was all done in Logic in a matter of 2 hours or less per scene. If I had more time I could’ve made everything much better, (less squeaky handle bars in hindsight lol) but we like to complete our videos fast once we start them. At the end of the day, we don’t even necessarily agree that AI is better or the right tool, but was more of an experiment and commentary on the current state of AI and sound design.

Right now we use AI to "copy" human creativity, but soon it'll be AI copying the works of other AI's, and it's at that point we get "shit in a can" by Piero Manzoni (Artist's Shit - 1961).
Interesting that we've seen this long before computer were invented.

How many generations of this before "art" is nothing but a thin, synthetic ghost of a thousand generations ago?

  • @AshNair26
    @AshNair26 11 дней назад +7

The best use case right now is for folly, and maybe sfx. Actual scoring, you just don't have the control. Its good to create melodic references, that can be recreated, but you're just not going to get enough fidelity for a proper mix, if you are a filmmaker. Its just not going to work. Unless at some point, you're able to feed an entire film, and then in real time get AI to score it based on the emotional beats, and have AI create separate wave files instead of just one. If that ever happens, that would be a game changer.
You'd have incredibly small teams making blockbuster level productions.

The best stuff created with AI always seems to have a decent amount of work and artistic direction behind it. I think of things like what Corridor Digital has been working on. The generic stuff that isn’t so interesting and has that VERY “generated by AI” feel is just whatever AI pops out first is good enough. If it’s used as an “easy button” it’s usually pretty apparent and uninspiring. But when used as another creative tool I feel like there is still merit to the art.

I do respect you guys a lot but this feels wrong. SAG AFTRA and the Writers just finished striking over this exact thing. I think AI audio works for older films because its already trained on those older films. The music is derivative because it was derived from these sources. And John Williams deserves every penny for what he made that fit the films he worked on. Same for the other composers and sound designers that worked on these. Stripping the artists that make cinema great from the process because it sounds “just as good”, doesnt progress the art form because we are making copies of copies of copies. I hope this helps you however you need but I wont be participating.

There’s a lot of potential for AI tools in small-team or fast-turnaround applications to get a “good enough” solution. Much like how things like
hybrid cameras and LED light panels made quality video production affordable to the masses. If the budget exists, being able to tailor the music and audio to be exactly right and consistent across the production rather than good enough will still win out. Larger productions might still want to use the tools to speed up production of some sound assets, particularly elements to be blended into layered sounds, or for more generic sounds that are not a point of audience focus.

The rapper wrote and performed his own raps. And he also wrote raps in the style of Jay-Z, and then performed them in the style of Jay-Z. And then Ai altered the texture of his voice to sound like Jay-Z for those parts. It turned out to be about 5% Ai

We could’ve mixed it in 5.1 or any other standard if we wanted to. Second time I ask them to test translating with the chapters that wasn't in training files, the output (which was from the same trained data - my translation), instead of fallowing my style, it came out like used another person to translate it and the characters in the story became like insane. I searched for the original jones clip just to watch side by side for comparison and there really is none. First of all the music is timed to the action. Whether the music is made before or after the action sequence they are assembled together with that intent. IE a film maker cutting to action based on existing music or the musician creating the music based on the film makers cuts. This makes for a much more powerful and emotional scene. Likewise the sound effects are tuned to exactly what you are seeing on screen the motorcycles grow loader as they approach. And the voice acting is far better. The high pitched yells in this is the first thing that stood and and seemed off when watching. In the original they voices and screams are done with a deeper male voice. and fit much better.
I do not denounce AI as a useful tool. It just all its going to be is the mainstream low quality tool, available to everyone. let anyone make some decent things with it. But if studios start thinking they can cut corners and use AI and have great movies they will be mistaken

I appreciate that you're trying to bring attention to the coming AI shitstorm, but is that what this channel is going to be now? I liked the channel because you are one of the best educational resources for film making on youtube. I'd appreciate more of that than videos showcasing AI slop while you take some weird centrist, fatalist stance.

I feel like people in the industry are in denial about this and have their heads in the sand when it comes to advancements in AI. Videos like this-made for this audience specifically-are really important and I commend you guys for putting it together. This stuff is getting good fast. It's not 100% there yet (especially the music) but think about how far off this all was 5 years ago. Think about how much work it took to rip off John Williams... Digital instruments, sample packs, etc. Now you can generate something in seconds that 99% of people won't recognize as not being made by a human. Just insane.

I can see using AI to sketch out an idea and maybe even present it to others to get them motivated to work on it. However, I feel it is cheap and nasty when people leverage the work of 100s if not 1,000s of other people through prompt writing by themselves and expect others to take is seriously. Ideas are easy to come up with. Most ideas probably find people as opposed to the other way around. Realizing ideas with a group of humans - that is actually doing something.
I do give more support to ideas that don't get made because of gate keepers, but even then - I stand behind if an idea is good enough and sold passionately to others it will get made.
Also - groups of people coming together to realize ideas has a much larger impact then just the end result. Watch any behind the scenes content to understand why that is.
I hope more people reject the siren call of AI augmented creativity. It has a limited sweet spot in creation that is respectful of others own efforts.

You used a clip from Jurassic Park, and didn't pick up on the irony of the movie's most iconic line: "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, that they never stopped to think if they SHOULD."
AI is just an easier method of plagiarism, and an ethical nightmare. This is very disappointing from a channel that usually tries to instruct other creatives.

It´s cool that you show the possibilities that some modern tools can give us, but (and i know is probably just for the "clickbait") you shouldn´t write in your thumbnail "AI sounds better", because it just doesn´t. Plus, you used as examples clips from some of the best movies of all time, that employed artists at the top of their craft; which in this case are Ben Burtt, Gary Rydstrom and the incredible John Williams. Maybe this kind of tools are better fitted for making "content", but not art.

It is pretty much guaranteed that, in less than 20 years, we can make entire feature films with AI that are indistinguishable from the real deal, from actors, to voices, to acting, to sets, sounds, music, editing, scripts, everything. We will have a boom in AI cinema as many more ideas get to be made because of how cheap it will be. An AI trained with all the movies that were made, with a sense of how the language of film works and how it makes us feel, will compete, and ultimately make movie-making, in the traditional sense, obsolete. A few people specialized in movie AI will be able to make, for instance, Alien 3 from scratch, from a community voting system where the script is decided by fans, it will feature a young Sigourney Weaver just like we see in Aliens and it will be able to mix the styles of Ridley Scott and James Cameron if we wish so.

so... illegally scraping the original work to train the system that then recreates the original work but not as good. it's so weird. how does anyone think we have animal sounds and motorcycle sounds and gun sounds to begin with? someone went out with a microphone and recorded them, and then sound designed them into a film or series. then AI comes along, swallows up all the work like a mega-Jaws, and poops it all out again and calls it extraordinary. but it's all just a bunch of Terminators stepping on the skulls of the artists who did the work in the first place.
