We live in a world of monophonic sound sources, so it's not unnatural. The only stereo sound sources are playback systems, and some electronic instruments tailored to them, created since the 1960's. The fact that our hearing is binaural (not stereo) creates a source of confusion. Live concerts are in mono - wouldn't want one side of the audience getting a different mix than the other. But we see the players in different positions. The "soundstage" and "phantom center' of the Stereo Revolution was just that - a way of using sound to recreate the visual image of a concert. But Beethoven and Mozart would have been flummoxed by the term "stereo piano" as the thing doesn't actually exist.

Exactly! Thank you. This same idea applies to big churches and cathedrals -there are no stereo pipe organs per se. The electronic organs simulate "stereo" but physical pipes in a room are set up in an array from high to low :)

Use one speaker. Simples. Also one ear.

And watching this after so many Dolby Atmos vids appear on my feed makes laugh with joy. I completely agree, BTW. Well, and it's not even a matter of agreeing or disagreeing, those are facts ;) It just makes me laugh to have on the one hand mono resurgence, and 7.1.4 on the other ;) Just gimme mono or stereo, I don't walk and move my head around 360° all the time when I watch a film or listen to a gig.

@@DarkSideofSynth LOL... right?! Remember Quad?? The audio industry has been
trying to sell us surround sound since the 1970s and we still ain't buying it :) Ha!

@@seanemmettfullerton I'm from 1971 ;). Yeah, hi-res audio, audio DVDs, the list goes on and on. People stream lo-fi files on crappy phone speakers or listen in their cars to the mp3s they downloaded 20 years ago from Napster and Kazaa ;) Ironically, vynil and cassettes came back with a bang, go figure :))

Nice talk. At the same time big studios are investing a lot of money on speakers for Atmos so they can help sell the Apple products...

Exactly, noise made by none musicians, for people that aren't interested in music and sold by hype. I love listening to old mono records, but there was depth in those recordings.

@@bernie8835 Right?! I think of an excellent mono recording as like good black and white photography. With mono you get contrasts, depth of field, early and late reflections, separation of instruments, and an impact that can sometimes get diluted in a subpar stereo mix.

@@seanemmettfullerton I don't think *mixes* have to be in Mono but I do think it's good practice to *mix* in Mono.
