When my homeroom teacher (theater teacher, hard-nosed, bitch...lol) asked what our name was after the tryout, we said S.O.S. She asked what that meant. "Sick Of Society". She said u can't use that name. We said "What??!!! That's our name". We told her we weren't changing it. She said we couldn't be in it with that name. So we said "We're NOT gonna be in it then...." lol We were badasses...at least we thought we were.
That can be done. All you need is some high voltage and a couple of electrodes. You won’t remember shit.....or maybe even how to shit. I’m sure there are easier ways but nothing quite as metal. I accept all forms of payment.

Some history on this one; Fade to Black was one of the first songs ever to try to tackle this subject so openly and bluntly. Metalheads back then (80s and 90s) were mostly outsiders; nerds, dorks and other weirdos. The fact that such a song came from a metal band was a huge deal - and it really resonated with a lot of the listeners. James has said in numerous interviews that he and the rest in the band continuously get letters or people coming up to them talking about how Fade to Black "saved their lives". It might sound corny as hell, but I don't doubt for a second that there are many thousands of people who have been helped away from the edge by this song.
Fade to Black absolutely saved my life back in the mid-late 80s when I was in junior high and high school. I learned to play guitar then and playing Metallica’s catalogue at the time really helped with getting emotion and aggression out. This song in particular saved my life numerous times when I was really on the edge of ending it. I finally got to tell James that to his face when I was lucky enough to meet them in 2009. It was an experience I’ll never forget.

I can not recommend Iron Maiden strongly enough. Specifically, Hallowed Be Thy Name. It was on number of the beast, my first cd ever at 7 years old and dear to my heart. I have been watching Creeping Death Moscow 91, for almost 18 years. I have the video saved on my comp, and it is, imo, the heaviest Metallica live video I've ever seen.

You can't imagine how many times I was told I worshipped the devil, it didn't help that I listened to Slayer (and their album covers). I remember when Congress called Dee Snider to testify. A kid killed himself while listening to heavy metal, and everybody blamed the music. It was a ridiculous time back then.

I know I’ll catch some grief from some who have recommended “ONE” and not the official video because of the distraction the background visuals and narration from the movie, but I strongly believe if you do some research before watching the official video, it WILL give you the “fill in the blanks” and make you understand and get the meaning of the story. It lends a different experience when you can watch the members play to the song imbedded in the video which is a generic version of seeing them in a live concert. I like both studio and the official video equal and I understand it’s because I’ve heard it hundreds of times, but for a first timer it helps going on prepared. If you’ve read this far let me help you understand the synopsis of the video/song. It’s about a soldier who stepped on a landline and basically got blown up losing his eyes,legs, arms, face and he’s in so much pain and can’t communicate and wants to die and the ONLY way he can try to communicate is with his head bobbing on a morse code way. And he’s asking the medical staff to kill him. It hits you in the heart, but at the same time, the instrumentation is the words that draw out the emotions that the soldier is going thru. Deep deep stuff.

The first reaction to point out "I was me, but now he's gone." Great line! Their songs are like rollercoasters and will take you on a journey all the time. Fade To Black was written when they were 20-21 years old. They still kick now in their late 50's. Check out Spit Out The Bone.
A few people I know got together to play Fade to Black at my best friend's funeral because it was one of his favorite songs. He was riding his harley when he was tragically hit by a drunk driver. Song's got a hell of a lot of meaning to me! :)
Fade to Black was written during the 'Master of Puppets' tour cycle. They were playing a show in New York I believe, and the van they were using to tour was robbed. All of their gear was stolen, guitars, amps, drums, EVERYTHING. Luckily for the band, at the time they had recently befriended the guys in Anthrax (could be wrong which band) and since they had been touring together, they let the guys in Metallica borrow their equipment for the show. Of course they replaced everything over the next few days/ weeks. The despair they felt after the theft is what inspired Fade to Black. Its also the key reason you can hear a huge difference in tone from the earlier albums (Kill 'em all, Master of puppets, and ride the lightning)to the later ones ( ...and justice for all, Metallica st/
The closed eyes and sounding so much better, it is a thing. A good song takes you on a journey and it usually into your self and your own mind and soul. Closing your eyes removes the visual distraction from this process... And yes, this is about suicide and feeling worthless. Just do Metallica Orion and you can close your eyes for all of the song as it is an instrumental song with no lyrics and it is huge journey... I'm quite sure you would like it. Metallica, 39 years old in November... Big 40 next year. They are working on new music as they cannot be on the road with Covid going on. They are the ultimate road warriors... And have played at least a concert on all of the continents... Think about it, all continents.

Metallica literally saved me and continues to every day. I have been relying on them since 1985. You should see them live. I have about 25 times. I have in my living will to have this song as I pass and also when my ashes are being scattered.

Be sure to listen to the whole thing .... my mind was blown the first time I listened to it ... being a teen in the 80's I got exposed to some really ground breaking metal music. There are themes in the album that are still quite relevant ... especially with what is going on right now in 2020 .

When those different melodies of the backing guitar establish the mood and are already so awesome - and then solo starts and gets more and more intense until you think your mind can't take any more intensity... and then it gets even better... Just think... this song has probably helped countless people through suicidal depression shepherding them back from the brink. I honestly think that this song has saved thousands of lives for that very reason. And you are absolutely right about the metal community. Metalheads are attracted to metal, and metal faces the horrors & tragedies of life honestly. This really shows how music impacts people. I really enjoy feeling his feelings in a way because certain songs do that to all of us. It's one thing to listen to music but it's another thing to actually feel it. Every piece of music is absolutely beautiful in its own way (Respectfully speaking). This is how everyone can kind of think the same way. At least for however long the song is and that's enough.
I used to work at a fast food joint, and this one weekend in 1991 there were two concerts back to back. Friday was a Simple Minds concert. Sunday was a Heavy Metal concert with Metallica, AC/DC, Queensryche and more. A lot of people who went to those concerts stopped by our fast food joint. That Friday, the restaurant was filled with university students, and it was a goddamn mess. Burgers were drooping from the walls, chairs were thrown through the restaurant, and we had to call the police to restore order. Saturday the restaurant was filled with people with tattoos, long hair, beards, wearing black shirts, denim and leather. It as intimidating as hell, but there were absolutely zero incidents. Everyone was very well behaved. That one weekend upended all my preconceptions. It would still take several years before I really started listening and appreciating Metal.
Dude this is timely as on Jayvee channel I was recently shocked at how aggressive fans of Simple Minds seem to be. I think it might be good to draw a distinction between bands and their fans as to attitudes. Personally I'm not a fan of Slayer the band (musically) however I've found their fans to be generally cool tolerant open minded people. Personally I am a big fan of Rush but I find a lot of their online fans to be arrogant entitled pushy rude. Likewise I like Allman Brothers but find a lot of their online fans being too aggressive for my taste. I'm not sure that the bands cited do or do not play a huge role in their fans' behavior, but I hear you as to how one fan base comes across differently than another. (And of course there are always exceptions, a few bad apples risk spoiling outsider perception of the orchard)
During my meanwhile 36 years of being a metal fan and visiting countless concerts/festivals, I only experienced one time, when metal fans acted bad. That was in 1987 on the Monsters of Rock festival in Nuremberg. Most of the fans were peaceful, but a few idiots were acting absolute disgusting. Pushed people away, started fights, even destroyed things like places for food and drinks. That was very sad, although the festival itself was great. Pretty Maids, Helloween, Cinderella, Ratt, Metallica (already with Jason Newsted), Ronnie James Dio and Deep Purple in original line up played.
@@strogaa there is often at least one jerk in any crowd, at least in Philadelphia PA sadly. I saw Don Henley on his 3rd solo tour, and one drunk loud obnoxious ass was pulled out by security. I saw Suicidal Tendencies and Queensryche in the same venue, and saw one guy get pulled out. Probably not the same guy, but I was at both shows so who knows.

Metallica changed my life and have given me such a tremendous sense of self since finding them when I was 10-11 years old. This song was part of my first listening experience of them (the entire Ride The Lightning album while playing video games at my cousins house). Like I always say... better late than never! I'm 56 years old and have listened to a fair amount of Metallica off and on over the past 30 years, but somehow I had never crossed paths with this song until last summer. And oh my, what an unexpected surprise it was! It quickly became my favorite, or perhaps a tie with One. Both are incredible works of art!
Speaking of love from the metal community. Look up some of the stories from metal bands that gone out of their way to help their fans. For example the band "Korn": a student was kicked out of school for wearing one of their shirts, and the band heard of it and went out of their way to come to him and play a private concert for him and his friends. Metallica in the early 90s had their "motherload" contest in which the loaded 4 semi trucks full of Metallica gear. Drums, guitars, shirts, and even a Jeep. Yes, a brand new Jeep. One of the trucks actually contained the band. The surprise winner that had the semi truck show up to their house got to meet Metallica and they put on a private show for their friends and family. The love not only between fans, but from the bands themselves is entirely unmatched.
Fade to Black is one of the 2 songs from Metallica (along with One) that I still love a lot. Master of Puppets was also my "gateway drug" into metal. The day you want more technical, complex and epic than that, I highly recommend Dream Theater. Seeing how you liked Fade to black more than Master of Puppets, I would say a song like "Trial of tears" would be a good introduction to them. And when you want really epic you can check out "A change of seasons" or "Octavarium".

This song has officially beat everything to me. For about 23 years I have proudly stated that this is the greatest song ever written. And, suicidal as it is, to me it's "Being ok that it's your time to go." instead of the more traditional "committing suicide." My main auditory goal in life is to be sure that the last song, or maybe even "thing" I hear is fade.
Watch some of their live clips from their tour last year. When you see them playing to huge crowds in Poland, Russia and Bucharest you realize how important they are.
So glad I caught your reaction to Metallica. I tell you, even though this song is obviously about suicide, when my step dad was dying of cancer this song really helped me through a lot of emotions. It still does help get a good cry out. I wasn’t ready to let go, at times it hits hard that he’s gone and this song just helps me mentally and emotionally. I love Metallica. Such a beautiful and sad song. I always think of my friend Floyd who had told me as a kid that he wanted this to play at his funeral. He passed away a few years ago and "Fade to Black" played on and on. I recommend "Orion" and "Nothing Else Matters" for songs that feel real good like this
You mentioned being a Big Room guy. I actually MAKE Big room house, but I came from Metal. Specifically Metallica, as I learned in my teens and 20's learning their entire catalog on electric guitar, and fade to black was the 1st song I set out to learn. I know I’ll catch some grief from some who have recommended “ONE” and not the official video because of the distraction the background visuals and narration from the movie, but I strongly believe if you do some research before watching the official video, it WILL give you the “fill in the blanks” and make you understand and get the meaning of the story. It lends a different experience when you can watch the members play to the song imbedded in the video which is a generic version of seeing them in a live concert. I like both studio and the official video equal and I understand it’s because I’ve heard it hundreds of times, but for a first timer it helps going on prepared. If you’ve read this far let me help you understand the synopsis of the video/song. It’s about a soldier who stepped on a landline and basically got blown up losing his eyes,legs, arms, face and he’s in so much pain and can’t communicate and wants to die and the ONLY way he can try to communicate is with his head bobbing on a morse code way. And he’s asking the medical staff to kill him. It hits you in the heart, but at the same time, the instrumentation is the words that draw out the emotions that the soldier is going thru. Deep deep stuff.

A few people I know got together to play Fade to Black at my best friend's funeral because it was one of his favorite songs. He was riding his harley when he was tragically hit by a drunk driver. Song's got a hell of a lot of meaning to me! :)

Fade to Black was written during the 'Master of Puppets' tour cycle. They were playing a show in New York I believe, and the van they were using to tour was robbed. All of their gear was stolen, guitars, amps, drums, EVERYTHING. Luckily for the band, at the time they had recently befriended the guys in Anthrax (could be wrong which band) and since they had been touring together, they let the guys in Metallica borrow their equipment for the show. Of course they replaced everything over the next few days/ weeks. The despair they felt after the theft is what inspired Fade to Black. Its also the key reason you can hear a huge difference in tone from the earlier albums (Kill 'em all, Master of puppets, and ride the lightning)to the later ones ( ...and justice for all, Metallica st/
The closed eyes and sounding so much better, it is a thing. A good song takes you on a journey and it usually into your self and your own mind and soul. Closing your eyes removes the visual distraction from this process... And yes, this is about suicide and feeling worthless. Just do Metallica Orion and you can close your eyes for all of the song as it is an instrumental song with no lyrics and it is huge journey... I'm quite sure you would like it.
Metallica, 39 years old in November... Big 40 next year. They are working on new music as they cannot be on the road with Covid going on. They are the ultimate road warriors... And have played at least a concert on all of the continents... Think about it, all continents.

Metallica literally saved me and continues to every day. I have been relying on them since 1985. You should see them live. I have about 25 times. I have in my living will to have this song as I pass and also when my ashes are being scattered.

Be sure to listen to the whole thing .... my mind was blown the first time I listened to it ... being a teen in the 80's I got exposed to some really ground breaking metal music. There are themes in the album that are still quite relevant ... especially with what is going on right now in 2020 .

This really shows how music impacts people. I really enjoy feeling his feelings in a way because certain songs do that to all of us. It's one thing to listen to music but it's another thing to actually feel it. Every piece of music is absolutely beautiful in its own way (Respectfully speaking). This is how everyone can kind of think the same way. At least for however long the song is and that's enough.
I used to work at a fast food joint, and this one weekend in 1991 there were two concerts back to back. Friday was a Simple Minds concert. Sunday was a Heavy Metal concert with Metallica, AC/DC, Queensryche and more. A lot of people who went to those concerts stopped by our fast food joint.
That Friday, the restaurant was filled with university students, and it was a goddamn mess. Burgers were drooping from the walls, chairs were thrown through the restaurant, and we had to call the police to restore order.
Saturday the restaurant was filled with people with tattoos, long hair, beards, wearing black shirts, denim and leather. It as intimidating as hell, but there were absolutely zero incidents. Everyone was very well behaved.
That one weekend upended all my preconceptions. It would still take several years before I really started listening and appreciating Metal.
Dude this is timely as on Jayvee channel I was recently shocked at how aggressive fans of Simple Minds seem to be. I think it might be good to draw a distinction between bands and their fans as to attitudes. Personally I'm not a fan of Slayer the band (musically) however I've found their fans to be generally cool tolerant open minded people. Personally I am a big fan of Rush but I find a lot of their online fans to be arrogant entitled pushy rude. Likewise I like Allman Brothers but find a lot of their online fans being too aggressive for my taste. I'm not sure that the bands cited do or do not play a huge role in their fans' behavior, but I hear you as to how one fan base comes across differently than another. (And of course there are always exceptions, a few bad apples risk spoiling outsider perception of the orchard)
During my meanwhile 36 years of being a metal fan and visiting countless concerts/festivals, I only experienced one time, when metal fans acted bad. That was in 1987 on the Monsters of Rock festival in Nuremberg. Most of the fans were peaceful, but a few idiots were acting absolute disgusting. Pushed people away, started fights, even destroyed things like places for food and drinks. That was very sad, although the festival itself was great. Pretty Maids, Helloween, Cinderella, Ratt, Metallica (already with Jason Newsted), Ronnie James Dio and Deep Purple in original line up played.
@@strogaa there is often at least one jerk in any crowd, at least in Philadelphia PA sadly. I saw Don Henley on his 3rd solo tour, and one drunk loud obnoxious ass was pulled out by security. I saw Suicidal Tendencies and Queensryche in the same venue, and saw one guy get pulled out. Probably not the same guy, but I was at both shows so who knows.
That's how to listen to Metallica song. Close your eyes, listen to the sound of drum, bass, melody, and rhythm.

Metallica changed my life and have given me such a tremendous sense of self since finding them when I was 10-11 years old. This song was part of my first listening experience of them (the entire Ride The Lightning album while playing video games at my cousins house). I still remember it vividly and I a now 33 years old. \m/

Like I always say... better late than never! I'm 56 years old and have listened to a fair amount of Metallica off and on over the past 30 years, but somehow I had never crossed paths with this song until last summer. And oh my, what an unexpected surprise it was! It quickly became my favorite, or perhaps a tie with One. Both are incredible works of art!
Speaking of love from the metal community. Look up some of the stories from metal bands that gone out of their way to help their fans. For example the band "Korn": a student was kicked out of school for wearing one of their shirts, and the band heard of it and went out of their way to come to him and play a private concert for him and his friends. Metallica in the early 90s had their "motherload" contest in which the loaded 4 semi trucks full of Metallica gear. Drums, guitars, shirts, and even a Jeep. Yes, a brand new Jeep. One of the trucks actually contained the band. The surprise winner that had the semi truck show up to their house got to meet Metallica and they put on a private show for their friends and family. The love not only between fans, but from the bands themselves is entirely unmatched.

Fade to Black is one of the 2 songs from Metallica (along with One) that I still love a lot. Master of Puppets was also my "gateway drug" into metal. The day you want more technical, complex and epic than that, I highly recommend Dream Theater. Seeing how you liked Fade to black more than Master of Puppets, I would say a song like "Trial of tears" would be a good introduction to them. And when you want really epic you can check out "A change of seasons" or "Octavarium".

This song has officially beat everything to me. For about 23 years I have proudly stated that this is the greatest song ever written. And, suicidal as it is, to me it's "Being ok that it's your time to go." instead of the more traditional "committing suicide." My main auditory goal in life is to be sure that the last song, or maybe even "thing" I hear is fade.
Watch some of their live clips from their tour last year. When you see them playing to huge crowds in Poland, Russia and Bucharest you realize how important they are.

Such a beautiful and sad song. I always think of my friend Floyd who had told me as a kid that he wanted this to play at his funeral. He passed away a few years ago and "Fade to Black" played on and on. I recommend "Orion" and "Nothing Else Matters" for songs that feel real good like this

You mentioned being a Big Room guy. I actually MAKE Big room house, but I came from Metal. Specifically Metallica, as I learned in my teens and 20's learning their entire catalog on electric guitar, and fade to black was the 1st song I set out to learn. It's no surprise you love these songs being an EDM guy. They surprisingly go hand in hand
