Thanks Michael. You explain Finnish to a native English speaker in the most effective way. Your simple explanation of osata, voida and saada has really helped me. And the tip about not using "tarvita" in that certain way.
I think we English express ourselves in a certain way, and how we construct sentences don't necessarily translate to Finnish. I suppose what I am trying to say is that you explain these differences very well.
    Thanks for your pioneering work.

Hi, Michael! Was having so much trouble with the present tense section of Duolingo and struggled to understand it. Thank you for breaking down the rules of each verb type! This was exactly what I needed! Now that I know the pattern, it will make forming the sentences a lot easier

16:30 "vaa'alla" ("on a/the scale") would be an example of a non-compound word with 3 same vowels in a row. (The hyphen in this case denotes a 'k' deleted by consonant gradation, in whose place we put a glottal stop when pronouncing). Luckily in writing there's never more than 2 same vowels in a row without some intervening symbol - a hyphen, or a dash in case of compound words.

Thanks. This is very helpful, direct and clear. My only comment is not including one example of verb like tehda where (I think, the hda all get removed...also no a-doubledot On my keyboard). You are really comfortable in discussing this. I like hearing this explained by a native english speaker.

Thanks a lot for this! Always have trouble with verb types! Lots of info crammed in here!
Just a friendly (hopefully helpful) critique: I know you were trying to have a fluid, more discussion like video, however I found it a bit hard to stay attentive as you were effectively just talking at the camera for 25 minutes. Might be worth taking a bit more time to edit with some cuts to remove the ums and errs and the like, and maybe use some exercises or something to make it a bit more engaging for the audience? I often use song lyrics to practice stuff in Finnish, so maybe that's something that could help?
But again thanks heaps for the video! I used your website a bunch when I was living in Finland so hoping this will be just as useful!

Thanks for the feedback. I’m learning to edit as I go and the videos will become a bit “cleaner” over time, and also shorter I think.

I think he is, and even implied being one. Whatever the case, his English is delightful and perfect. The accent sounds Australian, which is the accent I find the most beautiful 😊
I am a native Finnish enjoyer, but I find it interesting to refresh my "analytical" knowledge of the Finnish grammar and language, too.
About rolling the 'r's: that sound is usually the last one that native Finnish children, too, learn to say when growing up! Before they ace it, they usually replace the sound with 'l'. Even I vaguely remember the time when I still couldn't make that sound but was avidly trying to.
Your first example of "purra" sounded just fine to me. Personally, I like to say the long 'rr' in a less harsh-sounding manner, quite similar to how you did. I still roll the r, but maybe just with the side of my tongue. It's a feature of the dialect which you could hear in Tampere region. Especially their short 'r' is more like the Japanese counterpart, with just a very brief roll.
