I have been learning finnish from Duolingo , on a 29 day streak now , but Duolingo doesn’t really give you too much info about concepts and stuff, it’s mostly based on examples , but you have given a nice theory background behind the logic and it’s really helpful ! Loved it and definitely going to come to your videos often now !
Duolingo introduces (in 2024 anyway) the past tense in Finnish in the very last lesson. And it is restricted to the verb "to be" and only in the third person singular. I couldn't believe it when I made it there. I was getting excited and then,,, it was already over. lol
Очень крутые видео! У меня довольно слабый английский, но объяснение финской грамматики от Кати на английском мне более понятны чем те, что я смотрел на русском. Спасибо, Катя и успехов!
Wow...I was just trying to learn the "Cha, Cha, Cha" lyrics and this one popped up. So present tense....I am going crazy....past tense....I went crazy trying to learn finnish! Looking forward to more lessons. Thanks Katya. Kiitos.
I've never seen Finnish past tenses explained so simply. I think it's still better to practice and encounter those verbs used in the past tense, in films, radio or books so you remember them and it sounds right to your ear. But yeah, if it's a verb you are not too familiar with then the "Katchats system" can come in handy.
Thank you for such a helpful video!! I had problems with past tense, but everything is explained so simple and easy that I finally started to understand this topic!!
I appreciate that your eyebrows are the same color as your hair. You especially see dyed blonde hair with whatever natural hair color on the person, exampled via the eyebrows Bravo!!!! I enjoy listening to you teach. I would consider living in Finland if I was half my age. One other question I have is how do you stay up with your Finnish? Do you live there, which seems like the final necessary way to take your Finnish to the "finish line" Chow!!
Well! That was quite the lesson! It is almost llke a private session (except my yelling the wrong answer did not impress the teacher). Thank you very much for this lesson, teach! I will practise these instructions by realising what I am listening to en what I am reading. That gives me sort of a passive practice, thank you!!
Hey Kat, nice to meet you! I^m new here. Thanks for your content🌻 My answers are below 👇 minä katsoin minä heitin minä kannoin minä sain minä tykkäsin🌻 Eva

Well the consonant gradation can be tricky for some, I didn't use those as examples. And yes I'm 100% sure there are more exceptions xD But it's good that it seems simple at least! hahah
moi! i would like to ask, if i subscribe to your patreon account, will i be able to get workbooks for past tense? i need plenty of it since im so slow about this topic. Positive and negative past tense. I'd appreciate a reply from you.
Could you explain something to me? You said 'herätä' turns into 'minä heräsin'. I've read the book of Job in Finnish and in one place it says this.... 'Epätoivoon vaipuneet siunasivat minua, lesken sydämessä minä *herätin* ilon.' (29:13) What's the answer?
That is because it is two different verbs. The one Katya mention is herätä, which is to wake up (intrasitive) and the one you mention is herättää, which is to wake up something or someone (transitive). The latter one requires an object in this case the widows heart and what was awaken was joy. So in past tense herätä becomes heräsin - I woke up and herättää becomes herätin - I woke up something or someone. Hope it helps :)
thank you very very much! that's great explanation (instead of reading a lot of stuff in grammar books/websites...). of course, I keep trying and practicing!
And! As I see from your examples in the description box, 3rd singular (hän) doesn't have any personal ending, like: katsoa -> (Pres) hän katsoo -> (Past) hän katsoi I just add -i according to the rule, and don't add anything else, right?
@@KatChatsFinnish yeah, I figured that, it was just a stupid joke, sorry :( I really like learning this language, but it's just too funny sometimes... I meant no offence

Minä kantoin is it correct for kantaa?
It would be "minä kannoin" because of consonant gradation :)
Could you explain something to me?
You said 'herätä' turns into 'minä heräsin'.
I've read the book of Job in Finnish and in one place it says this....
'Epätoivoon vaipuneet siunasivat minua,
lesken sydämessä minä *herätin* ilon.' (29:13)
What's the answer?
Oh that is if you wake someone else up. Not you waking up yourself. So you woke up joy. ”Minä herätin sinut” = I woke you up
That is because it is two different verbs.
@@JeppeR-un2kv Aaah, I get it, thanks!
Herätit todellakin aivoni! (good?)
minä kannoin , minä heitin , minä katsoi. are these correct?
Yes! Just remember the -n on minä katsoin :)
minä tykkäsin (i liked). is it correct?
Yes! 😁
Great video, I assume that the negative statements follow suit? Ex: mä join --> mä en joi (I did not drink)? Kiitos paljon taas(?)!
The negatives are a tad different so I’ll have to make a separate video about that!
What are verbtypes?
Hi bro can you help me set p7-p-10-p11 what should I choice
Very clear as far as it went but what about hän in past tense?
Oops, sorry. Found them down in the exercises section.
Thanks so much but I don't understand Rule 4 on SYÖDÄ. You didn't explained how you removed the 'y' before arriving at sön
She explained to take away the first vowel y. Eg syödä=to eat. Syön=I eat. Then take away y, and add in= you get söin=I ate
Moi! Why did you change the maksaan (maksain) to maksoin, how did you get the zero?
Maksaa=to pay. Now genetiivi n for I. You get maksan. Cos it's two vowel present, you add Io and it gives maksoin=I paid
Minä sain. which means I got something. Is it correct?
Yes it’s correct!
thank you very very much! that's great explanation (instead of reading a lot of stuff in grammar books/websites...). of course, I keep trying and practicing!
And! As I see from your examples in the description box, 3rd singular (hän) doesn't have any personal ending, like: katsoa -> (Pres) hän katsoo -> (Past) hän katsoi
I just add -i according to the rule, and don't add anything else, right?
kiitos tosi tosi paljon sullekin! And yes exactly! For hän you don't need to add anything else after the -i :)
How do I know this verb belongs to verb type 1,2,3,4 or 5
Still finding answer to this. For me so far, it's a mystery that should be memorized. If you get answer, reply this comment
Learn the ending
Maybe in Rule 3 it's two-syllable words (and not more) since rakastan --> rakastin and not rakastoin
Minä katsoin…❤ Minä kanoin😊 Minä tykkäsin
