- During the first hour of the race. Great scrap as Pedro Lamy in the Aston Martin tries to get pass Johnny O'Connell's Corvette.
Part of it wasn't shown on Speed TV's coverage.
And here we are again. It's 2017, 45 minutes to go at Le Mans, Corvette vs. Aston Martin, half a second apart!
I love that the Astons are cars "007" and "009". That's awesome 😆
Opera: Le Mans. Singing tenor: Aston Martin DB9R. Singing Baritone: Chevrolet Corvette C6R. Overture: The Mulsanne Straight in D Major (ala Presto)
i can only assume the audi r10 tdi sings bass here
Best demonstration of European Auto vs American Auto. V12 vs v8
well ford and ferrari battles are pretty good too
Or 2017 v8 vs v8
*British
When Corvette Racing started about the same time the LS engine was made, and then about 10 years later they have destroyed or almost destroyed the GT1 class completely, that's determination and hard work shown very well
Smh now aston Martin got them stupid turbos...only the vettes still use N/A v8
why the hell does the race director always always go to a random camera right when the action heats up. who the hell really cares about the lmp1 car going unscheduled to the pits. leave the cameras on the gt battle
both the C6R and the DBR9 are extraordinary pieces of machinery, and which car wins on this competition is more of a question of the driver's skill with those two. too bad there wasn't much of a long-time rivalry between those two...
those are the two most badass racecars to ever touch pavement
Wicked!!! I was there and the support for the Astons was MASSIVE! This video has me hyped up for next year now.
Nice 1!!
@freedomsoldier187 The Corvette had the better mechanical grip where as the DBR9 has the best straight line speed. The Aston's were actually the faster cars, and the factory team qualified above the P&M Vettes both times they won Le Mans, the Corvette was just the better car over the course of the race. But still lost.
how are they boring? The C5 & C6 have helped establish the corvette name through out the world. Many victories at Lemans and still continue to compete with the best at Lemans. Hardly call such achievements boring.
Seeing the DBR9 race always makes me flutter. I love the fact that Aston Martin are going for an all over win with cars in pretty much every category for '09, loving the new Aston Martin LMP1 car by the way.
ASTON MARTIN FOR LE MANS '09!
I miss the DBR9 wail :/
This was thee most intense race in GTLM I've ever seen still to date.
wow, great video. both those cars are amazing. but everyone, you gotta give props to what the corvette racing team has done. they have really gotten the job done. dont wanna take anything away from the aston martin, it is a beautiful car.
nice video.
This is THEE greatest rivalry in professional motorsports ever -- period!
wow that was an awesome race. Jimmy O'connell's mental focus is just amazing. Any one who races in tracks knows this; getting pressured by an opponent is no fun at all while trying to maintain your own pace and avoid making errors that will force you off the track or lead the opponent to pass you. The DB9 attempted the drafting technique; but was always shut down at the end. Jimmy if you read this; your the man.
@MikeNoran Last time I checked Chevy and Pratt & Miller where American companys.
AMR doesn't have an F1 team, but they are helping the Charouz Racing Systems team with their all-new Lola B08/60 Aston Martin. AMR's 'official' DBR9s are only running in the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans this year.
I loved GT1, amazing cars. Cant believe how long ago this was, times gone so fast
what happened to the dodge vipers? how come you dont see those any more
this is one of the reasons i see lemans 24 hr besides being the best existing race every year because these two cars always give a great battle
I love this. I really like racing this on the game GRID its pretty legit:)
Chevy is making a GT2 version of the C6.R it is based on the Corvette ZR1 and it will make its race debut at Mid- Ohio the race after the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
oh sweet! where did you get this info mate, could you give me the link?
I remember watching this. I'm a Vette guy through and through, but Astons leave me weak-kneed. This was a great rivalry, even better than the Vette battles versus the Vipers and Ferraris.
Clearly, Corvette is boss here
Yes they are, they are running the Gulf liveries in the LMS this year.
I think i read somewhere that the mc12 was 17 feet long. I might have read wrong.
It's much easier to be the follower. Maintaining a lead like this is incredibly difficult.
@Northax Ah right yeah - Aston was never going to get past and he knew it, the Corvette had the correct line, the 'inside' isn't the racing line. The only reason the Aston is there is so he didn't have to lift off or risk running into the back of the Vette.
Can anybody please tell me which race classes participate in this race?
Especially the first car in the video (/ the audi with the fuel problems = same race class) i would like to know which race class..
WHERE IS THE SECOND PART TO THIS?
So is AMR only running the 007 and the 009 in the 24 and thats it?
Got to love the Vette Boys!!!!! brilliant.
@ Kw12345ff
I may be looking in the wrong places, so if you can provide a link that definitively says that Opel designed and built the C6.R's supension, I'll be satisfied. Don't get mw wrong- I lived in Europe for two years, and I LOVE Opel. They just don't seem to have anything to do with Corvette racing as you assert.
@Koruephiroth
There are 4 classes at the 24h of le mans.
LMP1 and LMP2 (the first car in the video is one of those): le mans prototpyes. Fastest cars on the grid. Usually take the overall win. The winning cars were powered by diesel engines for the last 5 years.
GT1 and GT2: More or less production based GT cars
ok im american, and i'll admit our production cars don't take corners well, but all of our race cars are astonishing
nice battle! love both cars
No, Team Modena is the only full-season DBR9 LMS team.
they should have made the vette with rear independent suspension. It is still design based on old technology. It would do even better. This race version C6R doesn't even have the stock suspension setup....all been modified to independent at all 4 corners.
the corvette is definitely competitive, they are saying the corvette has old tires and the DBR9 has fresh tires and just cant get by
I heard that Laguna still has some 917s around once in a while.. now almost 40 years later.
@AutoFanBoy I will agree that the Mazadas in the early 90's were dominate. But Japanese car companies have only won the 24 hour of Le Mans once. ( in 91and in a Mazda) For all of their technology they should have won more 24 hours of Le Mans races.
I do agree also that racing regulations can go overboard sometimes.
@DecadentOpiate I myself would rather have the vette. It just seems more practical and more acceptable to aftermarket changes. Love astons though, my favorite of all time is the vanquish
Looks like GRID
The Viper went out of production but is back now. The new 2013 gts-r is going to be racing GT in the ALMS later this season
Yep! Corvette one this race in 06. But Aston won 07 & this year. All races between the two cars are very close!
Man your so right. americans have produced good drivers. Jeff Gordon not just in NASCAR but he is a talented driver in other cars. And America needs a LMP1 car. Im going to school to be a mechanical engineer in hopes that one day i can be the american LMP1 team
Well there was already one in the 2009 race.
is that a Toyota Supra at 4:44? It looked like the Au Cerumo Supra.
Nice! I remember watching this :p That battle was a nice one.. But I can't remember if the Am ever got passed the Corvette.. Did it?
Both cars sound great together.
Prodrive did NOT purchase Aston Martin. Several investors purchased the company. Ford gave Aston Martin huge capital and their own engine plant.
@osp80 It would seem the DBR is faster on straights, and C6R faster in corners, so I think it's quite the opposite :)
THis was really one exciting battle! I remember this clearly :)
I think that when the Aston pulls out of the slipstream, it was because he knew he couldn't pass, so he was getting some fresh air into the engine to cool it down
Pratt & Miller and Corvette Racing paid their dues to get as fast as they are, as far as getting their tails kicked the first few years of the program...but nobody changed the rules for them. But Aston comes in and immediately the rules are changed. There's no question about it, when both teams were under the 'SAME' rules, it wasn't even a contest. Whatever happened to makeing your car better the old-fashioned way? Instead of getting a rules change to get on equal ground?
@dojOdRiFTeR uhh dude the 787B is from mazda, your thinking of Ford with the Gt40
are you sure? i havn't seen it this season. nor the matech ford gt
Circuit de la Sarthe looks exactly the same as portrayed in Gran Turismo 4 in real life.
But the corvette is the exception, because the zr1 and the zo6 performance on the street, benefits from some of the success of the c6r racing program.
@gaddyify not just handle well but have smashed the competition.
You can buy a DBS9, which is like the racing version, but it's road legal.
The aston has been knockin on the door of the vette for years now. Its been more of a match for pace but has been a constant victim of reliability issues. It should have won le mans 2006, it shouldv given a serious challenge in ALMS 2006 but reliability again but this year in the LMS it has had the vette beat completely and it cemented its position with this le mans win. The aston is finally the car to break the vette hold on GT1.
man that corvette destroyed that dbr 9 on that backstretch. chevys rule.
Sorry Angelico but it's not true... please check out about C6R conception, the suspension projetc's it's by Opel.
how the hell can you have any "speeding violation" in a race
that was a good battle from both drivers
We all know why the Corvette won. They have the power of LS, which proved to be stupidly reliable
Corvette has not rear rigid-axe anymore.
Corvettes haven't had solid rear axles since 1963.
What do you mean by that? If you're implying that American cars with decent handling are the exception, you're mistaken.
endurance sports car racing? yes.
the gt1 class in 2010? not likely.
the original world sportscar championship got rid of the "1000 km of ..." races in the late 1980s in favor of "480 km of ..." and then the 3.5 liter engine rule came. thanks a lot bernie and max (fia)
ahh no, but any kind of violation related to speed in a race seems a bit (ah) strange lets say
Prototypes (LMP1 more than LMP2) are more about pushing technological limits than providing entertaining racing.
@ninjafatballz If your looking for good handling cars from BMW, Mercedes, and Jaguar from 30/40 yrs ago why don't you try the BMW3.0CSL, or the Mercedes 300SL, or Maybe back a bit further for an E-type Jag, I think you will find they all handled pretty well.
i just went to the exotic car dealership to get reaquainted with astons. while the dbs are not that appealing to me, i saw a "just off the truck" vantage. THAT car was sharp. it was the light green with gunmetal colored wheels and beige leather interior. my vette has butterfly valves that open at full throttle. it's pretty quiet around town, until you step on it. oh, it works on the street as well. the ride is fine to me, but maybe not on european roads.
I truly wish they would've taken the cuffs off of all the GT1 cars and let them fly. Who cares if they beat some LMP1s? They don't seem to mind Penske running rampant in LMP2s. Alas, we won't get to see it as all the rules are changing again. I heartily welcome the return to the 'Group C' or 'GTP' look being mandated back for 2010 (bubble tops). I also welcome Corvette making both up & down moves, up to LMPs and down to GT2s at the same time. Should give us years of great fun ahead.
You can only buy a DBR9 (DBRS9) if youre an aston martin racing driver.
let this be a reminder to Europeans that America CAN produce talented drivers and cars outside of NASCAR.
Now all we need is an LMP1 American car...
Let's see, most of the cars in europe with large displacement engines are not normally aspirated. the bugatti has 1000hp. The ultimate aero has ONLY 6.4 liters(387 cid) and it gets 1180+hp. The bentleys are all pressurized, the maybach, and so on. We prefer to keep things simple. We had a 32 valve, ZR1 that was designed by lotus, assembled by mercruiser, we all know how that went. There are few secrets left. We could do what you do, but prices would soar.
@Dominator5515 I know, I was there both years, in fact I haven't missed a year since 2004. If you read what I said, I said that the Aston had a very rough first 2 years, but once it was sorted, as in once it wasn't exploding when they ran it flat out it was the better car around le sarthe, but the better car around say laguna seca or lime rock? Corvette every time.
actually this was the last time corvette won its class. the aston won in 07 and 08
@909Monopoly in a Aston Martin, handling comes standard. it shouldn't take 500,000 dollars to get an american car around a track with some competition. Although, a few decent cars sometimes slip through.
@smallblocksupercharg You can take any car.. and with the right engineering you can make it a winner. Pontiac GTO R, Pontiac GXP R, Winners of the Grand Am series. Thanks of course to the Pratt and Miller engineering.. the same group that engineers the Compuware C6 R. Ford Mustang wins all the time vs Porsche, Corvette and others (Continetal Series) Look at the Saleen S7 2 time Championship with Chris Bingham.
@Northax beside the Astons are Quicker on qualifying
That's what I think. Corvette won 2005 an 2006, and Aston won 2007 and 2008. We'll have to see who wins 2009.
Lucky enough, huh? well, i have a 2008 z06 sitting in the garage! Did you just "drive" a Z06, or do you OWN one? If the vette could not handle, it wouldn't have posted a 7:43 at the NURBURGRING! Since i have one, i know the ins and outs of the car. Being in Carmel, Ca., i drive the Pacific Coast Highway all the time. If you don't know about the PCH, look it up. This vette handles a well as any exotic i have driven, or bought.
Corvette Racing will move to the GT2 class in the 2nd half of the 2009 American Le Mans Series and sell customer cars.
The only reason corvette won is becuase the aston had reliability issues. I think for a small team (which they were) to only lose to a team with all of general motors funding them, with more experienced drivers and crew, more sponsors becuase of a clutch issue is a damn good one. The next two years the more experienced aston team with better funding blizted the vettes. They got so bored of winning so easily the moved to the lmp1 class.
Corvettes awesome!!!!!!!
Yeah and the P1 astons are all we get to watch this year - they aren't running the two DBR9's in GT1, so Corvette will win GT1 this year.
I notice you left out the year Aston came to "compete" in the ALMS. They couldn't keep up so they cried until IMSA forced restrictions on the Corvette.
AMR did themselves a real disservice with all that disgraceful whining and a lot of people lost respect for them because of it.
Corvette has not rear rigid-axe anymore. The suspensions were rebuilt all around by European GM (Opel). Before that, Corvettes were the same shit-handling of ever. Now, it's a true race car.
hell yeah i agree
Remember that this is the last race the Corvette won. For the past two years, '07 and '08, the Aston Martin's took the lead. An now Aston Martin has their own Le Mans Prototype with which they are going to try and go for an overall win.
tht was intense
oh....my bad...I think Freesafety25 was right....looks like a Spyker....
Just look at that low, wide-stanced, mean profile, with the air intake at the nose! i understand you all chose aston because of it's heritage, but corvette has heritage, both street and racing. if you do not like the shape of it, then you must not like the ferrari 575m maranello! they BOTH look very similar. look at the top gear Z06 episode.
RIP David Leslie
Maybe they will maybe they wont. I will be the first to congratulate Corvette racing if they win. Shame you and whatheheack cant be so gracious towards Aston and the Brits. If Aston win i will look forward to you offering your congratulation's. I wont hold my breath though. I love both cars by the way. You should just take of your USA big head every now and then. You might find you could get on with some people on here who just appreciate great cars not just be a fanboy of one!
