I do feel conflicted about feeding my gecko and my husbands chameleon insects. I started off with pet insects. I have had pet crickets and snails and sometimes it really gets to me. I go overboard creating little paradises for my feeder insects so they're at least happy until they are fed to my reptiles. Thank you so much for asking. I thought I was the only one. My animals won't eat pre killed all that often, so I just feed live insects. I don't feel all that much for the insects anymore because of it, but I do occasionally keep some and let them grow into adult hood. For instance, right now I've got a batch of superworms set aside to grow into beetles to start a small superworm farm.

Ofc I feel really bad and I will imagine the family of the prey waiting for it to come back. Plus imagine being raised just to be eaten and betrayed by the one that took care of you your whole life, the one you loved the most. And at the few last moments of your life, you’ll stare at the monster while being hold by your owner and is slowly lowered down to the monster, knowing that you’re going to die, painfully. I usually don’t feel bad about feeding mealworms, I don’t feel bad about super worms or roaches unless I have to crush their heads and/or cut them in half. I’ve gotten kinda used to feeding crickets but when they rip their own legs off and when I see their faces, I start to feel bad. I don’t like feeding any of the caterpillars (hornworms). I would be bothered by wax worms except that my gecko loves them so much that it distracts me :) I know it’s not cruel because they would eat this in the wild.

I've only kept spiders and ants; I think that if the animal will accept dead prey it should be offered, esspecially with long deaths like ants. A lizard could kill a roach in a few bites, whereas it can take hours for ants to properly kill their prey if live. For me it's about reducing the overall harm of the animals, feeders included, if this little cockroach doesn't have to feel the fear of being swarmed by tiny but ferocious workers and die a slow painful death then I don't think they ever should. (Of course there's spiders who.. most if not all need live prey to feed so that would be like feeding your cat only vegetables; neglectful at best)

  • @EggBeatzz

I dont have much of a problem at all feeding my lizard insect feeders. My bearded dragon eats crickets and super worms, and I can't stand bugs to begin with so it isn't much of a moral dilemma for me. But I do feel like I would have a bit of conflict if I had to feed my reptile pinkies, or mice

When I owned a lizard growing up, I felt bad at first but then some of his crickets escaped and the constant noises they made were so annoying that all the guilt washed right away overnight.
Nowadays I feel I've matured and if I get another reptile at some point I don't think I'll feel bad, I don't see it as morally any different from the way humans farm animals to eat, and I'm not giving up bacon any time soon.

I’ve never felt guilty for feeding bugs to my reptiles (dubias, superworms, crickets, wax worms, and horned worms). But now that I know Sky Puppies exist, they would be the ONLY exception! They are too cute to kill off, they look like baby bats or like sugar gliders! I can never unsee them as Sky Puppies now, so thank you! I have a new found love those little guys!
