    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Furious (Laurence Fishburne) convinces Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.) to give him the gun instead of avenging Ricky's death.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    Director John Singleton's debut chronicles the trials and tribulations of three young African-American males growing up in South Central Los Angeles. When young Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.), a bright underachiever, begins to show signs of trouble, his struggling professional mother (Angela Basset) sends him to live with his father (Lawrence Fishburne), a hard-nosed, no-nonsense disciplinarian. There he befriends Ricky (Morris Chestnut), a burgeoning football star, and Doughboy (Ice Cube, in a standout performance), a would-be gang banger. Over the years, each chooses his own path: Tre seems bound for college; Ricky is a blue-chip running back with his pick of schools; Doughboy is a dope dealer and bona fide gangster who drifts in and out of the county juvenile facility. All is well until, without warning, a rival gang chases down Tre and Ricky with tragic results. Doughboy immediately prepares for revenge, forcing Tre to decide whether to jeopardize his future and, perhaps, his life for the price of revenge and self-respect. Sometimes riveting, Boyz'N the Hood is not without its problems. The film tries to cram every single issue facing the black community into an hour and a half of screen time, making the film seem at times forced. The symbolism seems forced as well, and the film is often unbearably heavy-handed. Also, the characterization often relies on cardboard cut-outs; every white character in the film is a one-dimensional bigot, and the black police officer with whom Tre and his father deal is even worse than his Caucasian counterparts. Still, the unevenness of the film is redeemed by some moments of true brilliance.

    This movie becomes so heavy & emotional after Ricky dies. It exhausted you..

    • @Onlyrealmusic4life
      @Onlyrealmusic4life 9 лет назад +184

      Yeah but it made the movie. What would have been the point if he went off and succeeded at USC or joined the Army? It would have been a nice Disney ending, but the way it did end made it so much more impactful. Mostly because this shit happens all the time but we don't think as much about it because we don't have an emotional connection like we did for Ricky by the end of the film. I enjoy movies that end like this the most, like American History X, Hardball (which always makes me cry) because even though the exhaust me and make me cry, it makes you feel and think for hours after the movie ends. Know what I mean?

    • @gerawallstar3487
      @gerawallstar3487 7 лет назад +55

      Onlyrealmusic4life I love endings like this, too. I especially love the message that they said in the end called "Increase the Peace." It shows how powerful and also kind of an exceptional impact that this film had. If they ended it, like with Ricky, and Trey succeding, it would be great, but also kind of predictable.

He went through the gang life and found no payoff, and tries his hardest to keep others from that life, especially his son. I can see why so many fatherless kids viewed him as a role model in their life.

Terrified that after all the work Furious put in, all the lessons he gave Trey on how to be a man, everything he did to put him on the right path instead of ending up like his gangbanger friends, he might be losing his son to the streets. He knows that he has ONE SHOT (no pun intended) to save his son from himself and the streets, and if he can't get through to Trey right here and now, he might never be able to reach him again.

    There is no greater righteous pride a man can have than to be a father. None. Not money, not status, nothing...... Fathers are the essential cornerstone in all our lives. To my black brothers, if your biological father was never present, you still have a father; OUR father. Don't ever forget that. Not ever.

Best father ever. Laurence Fishburne hands down made that movie with his performance as Furious. He nailed it and that scene was one of the best in the movie. What I really loved about this scene isn't that Tre just dutifully listens...he STILL sneaks off to go with Doughboy, Dooky and Monsta to get revenge. But the impact of the father is felt in the car...the weight of that presence in his life, the lessons...he realizes this is a life altering thing that's going to happen and not in a good way...and rightfully asks to get out. And Doughboy, to his credit, obliges. Teenagers will test your gangsta no matter how well you raise them. But the idea is, if you raise them right, eventually they make the right decisions BECAUSE of how you raised them.
