CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Doughboy (Ice Cube) tells Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.) that he understands why he decided not to be involved in avenging Ricky's murder.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Director John Singleton's debut chronicles the trials and tribulations of three young African-American males growing up in South Central Los Angeles. When young Tre (Cuba Gooding Jr.), a bright underachiever, begins to show signs of trouble, his struggling professional mother (Angela Basset) sends him to live with his father (Lawrence Fishburne), a hard-nosed, no-nonsense disciplinarian. There he befriends Ricky (Morris Chestnut), a burgeoning football star, and Doughboy (Ice Cube, in a standout performance), a would-be gang banger. Over the years, each chooses his own path: Tre seems bound for college; Ricky is a blue-chip running back with his pick of schools; Doughboy is a dope dealer and bona fide gangster who drifts in and out of the county juvenile facility. All is well until, without warning, a rival gang chases down Tre and Ricky with tragic results. Doughboy immediately prepares for revenge, forcing Tre to decide whether to jeopardize his future and, perhaps, his life for the price of revenge and self-respect. Sometimes riveting, Boyz'N the Hood is not without its problems. The film tries to cram every single issue facing the black community into an hour and a half of screen time, making the film seem at times forced. The symbolism seems forced as well, and the film is often unbearably heavy-handed. Also, the characterization often relies on cardboard cut-outs; every white character in the film is a one-dimensional bigot, and the black police officer with whom Tre and his father deal is even worse than his Caucasian counterparts. Still, the unevenness of the film is redeemed by some moments of true brilliance.

"Ain't got no mother neither....she loved that fool more than she loved me"
Damn. Gets me every time.
rite. sad part is dough literally risked his life to save avenge n look out for ricky. had dough n the crips not been there on crenshaw on the first encounter with the bloods rick would be dead rite then n there.
+adict108 right. The mother only loved Ricky cause he was good in school and had a bright future in football. She shouldve given them an equal amount of love and attention. I was sad when ricky and dough were fighting outside and she pushed dough off and slapped him instead of ricky.
+adict108 and then she got mad and started hitting Doughboy, blaming him for ricky's death. "YOU DID THIS! YOU DID THIS!" crazy
+Faith ricky might not have died had she not slapped only doughboy
+Richard Bao and i bet she didn't care when doughboy got murdered 2 weeks later
"This movie was way too real to get an Oscar."
Rob Gonz I know right? It’s widely considered to be one of the best movies about the hood of all time
Kathy Jones Fantastic movie, but it’s definitely not underrated at all.
The irony this comment is under
Who said that?
@Joel Villarreal 💯💯💯👏👏👏💪💪💪
"You still got one brother left." If that line doesn't touch your heart, then you ain't got one.
I guess I have no heart.
I had once said that to my best friend who had recently lost his brother.
Yea tru
Hamza Khaliq shut up dumbass up nigxa u sound stupid asf
I have a heart but this line didn't touch my heart
Doughboy was a true friend..he knew Tre wasn't but that gun play and he never judged him for it!!! Stand up guy
Lisa M ice cube is my favorite rapper /actor. He is my hero
Bashy Mitchel mine too

A stand up guy shooting people and killing them 😂
Only thing you forgot is that "Hey, dough.. you still got one brother left."
It''s that one line that makes the whole movie a masterpiece.
i think that emote can be interpreted as laughing or crying
vjakamirmirakanewnew I think that's the crying emoji…
vjakamirmirakanewnew 😂😭
The movie is goated without that scene all scenes in this movie is great
Only thing you forgot Is that "Hey Dough! Why she hit Chu????
"You still got one brother left."

Cuba Gooding was bloody sensational in this movie.
Pazuzu what you doing here ?
Dont he got like 2 or 3? The other 2 guys in the car
Every time I watch this film I always feel bad for doughboy. His mom treated him like shit all his life, very little support and had no guidance. Even though he appears tough he had a good heart.
Just cuz you have a good heart don't mean you not tough
I feel that Tre's father was like a father to all three of the guys.
Than he gets murdered
Wasn’t even his fault he was defending his brother when those guys were stepping to him
He wanted her love and caring..He wanted to please her even in doing little things...Like always looking after his little brother..
He saw how different she was him and knew he was the one she pinned her Hope's on...
A sad fact about this movie is that it's still relevant today.......
floyd brown uhh this will get WORSE if the welfare state is broken. Welfare is what keeps the insanely poor and homeless from rioting and dragging the rich from their mansions and eating their flesh.
Stop voting Maxine Waters, it's all much of the same.
Saint Luis and Detroit has entered the chat
Cleveland Ohio trying to join the military I'm living in the hood I'm trying to make it out
A rap group call bone thugs are from your city Zachary, i love bone thugs.
...Two weeks later he was murdered... Damn
Francis Albert For real :'(
....at least he don't have to be "hard" anymore...no more fighting..no more...
mrm64 :/
That's so unfortunate n was a product of his home n environment he became a statistic
April Martinez well he knew he was going to die, when you kill a rival gang it just continues and continues...I think if doughboy had support from his mother he probably be better off
@@seanalexander8558 true. Payback is their motto.
Cube should have got an Oscar
+2pacexpert his acting was fucking god but thay only give oscars to main stream actors
+2pacexpert "don't matter tho" as cube says
Should of but either they don't know, don't show or don't care what a great movie this is
+2pacexpert Oscar?? For this All Black Hood Movie??
White people would've been spinning in their grave
Yeah he played his role so well.
I always feel sad when ice cube said that his mother cares more about his brother then him because I could relate to not being my mother's favorite
niko lugo
niko lugo
theycallmethedoc thanks bro for saying that it doesn't affect me anymore like it use to I just accept it now it's the way it's going to be
+niko lugo look forward man. I'm in a similar situation where a woman's mom seems to care more about me than her daughter does. Even though I really like her, I can't really do anything about it. "Keep moving forward." Walt Disney.
niko lugo I'm sorry bro. That mum did favratism, treating Ricky way better than Doughboy, I'm glad Ricky was not involved in any shit but Ice Cube Wouldn't have got involved had his mum would have treated him just like she treated Ricky. I'm sorry you felt that you weren't your mum's favourite. That hurts. Stay strong brother
one of the best movies ever made.. Still makes me tear up.
+Long Live└A What do you think about Menace?
+Garviel Loken I havent bruh.. Its good?
Long Live└A
I meant Menace 2 Society. I'm pretty sure you know the movie. Greetings from Germany
Garviel Loken havent seen it homie but ill watch it later! Greetings from norway bruh
Long Live└A
I insist! If you liked Boyz n the Hood you gonna love Menace!
Cube killed this scene. Almost make yo ass want to cry on how REAL and how deep Cube got about hood life, sibling favoritism, and how the world don't really give a mad fuck about brothers dying in these hood streets every day.
He does more comedic stuff lately, but I would love to see Ice Cube do more dramatic roles.
As you get older you have to evolve. Ice Cube has come a long way from his streetwise beginnings.
@@ericrhodes5174 true
Man, John Singleton really deserved to win the Best Director Award at the Oscars. I even wouldn't have minded if Ice Cube got a Supporting Actor nod.
t1gertank19 Even in those days, Oscars were all white!
Fishburne should have gotten a supporting actor Nomination for sure but cube is fantastic
Bruh it grossed 57 Million and he would have been the youngest person to receive that award.
They robbed my guy for sure.
This movie kickstarted Gooding, Cube and Chestnut's careers
Sure Dough was a kid that acted up and talked back but the Mom is to blame as well, no seeing beyond the kid's face (looking similar to his dad's) and treating him just like he treated Ricky....shiz is so sad...
mrm64 Agreed! 💜 Dough boy he had an awesome heart.
I agree that was sad, Doughboy has a good heart and loved his brother. I wish the ending would have been where Doughboy take the SAT and pass and better himself.
Lateshia Childs to be honest I think that would spoil the film. This is much more realist
Lateshia Childs no I think they were aiming for reality and not a fairytale.
Youwill Regret I think you should reread what mrm64 said because your the only dumb one in this scenario.
This time use context clues and ignore the minor mistake and maybe you’ll realize that’s not what he said.
the next day doughboy
saw his brother buried
two weeks later he was murdered
i never forget that scene :(
Ronnie Juarez And then to make things sadder, Dough eventually just fades away and Tre goes back in the house. A sad but legendary ending to a legendary film.
By his own mother... the mother became the old lady on don't be a menace with doughboys 64' 😭
I'm glad they didn't show a scene how dough got murder, that would of been sad.
@@thedarkknightman6150 it doesnt show he was murdered but do they ever explain or talk about it?
Later...he’s reborn as Craig Jones in Friday
The best part is left out. "Hey Dough, you still got one brother left man." That's one of the best parts of the whole movie. The music and everything. You should redo this and include that part up until the epilogue where it talks about what became of everyone.
Doughboy had so much hurt in him. It's very sad, his mom didn't care anything for him. She blamed him for Ricky's death. Tre was an example of a real true friend. Doughboy had a messed up life! SMH.
KingdomMinded 87 💯💯
Tre wasn't a true friend he was a opp he was wearing a Crenshaw shirt he could've got shot by some crips u don't wear that stuff in a crip neighborhood
Here is the thing though: his mother messed with the wrong kind of man who did not amount to anything, and Doughboy seemed to have picked up on that and developed ways like the man who left her. No father figure or positive male role model, as their neighbor across the street Furious noted.
The ending, when Doughboy walks back across the road and his image fades away, is absolutely heartbreaking.
Such an underrated film, I always feel something as simple as the spelling of the title, "Boyz N The Hood", is what makes people overlook this film as a masterpiece. Had it just been called The Hood or something, I think far more critics would've taken notice.
Agree wit you man
What are you talking about the movie was a hit, critically acclaimed, and received several nominations
+Courage cdawg Shit even the French at Cannes gave this movie a 20 minute standing ovation.
+Ricky Veronese I cry every time
I don't think it's underrated. It was one of the first of its kind and is now considered the true test of "American hood movies" for lack of a better term. It's pretty much gone down in history as a classic.
The mother lost both her sons, Ricky and doughboy in less then a month, that would be terrible. This was such a great movie. Me having a father who is 68 right now and grew up in Long Beach, Compton and Crenshaw, I have heard some stories that are chilling. This movie did a great job of showing the brutality of the hood lifestyle in LA.
Same! My dad is 62 years old and from South Central. He went to "Washington" high school like Tre did in this movie lol. My dad has some of the craziest stories
@Ellie5621 What's wrong with that statement? Where you from?
still like this here in south central
This sceen always made me cry!! Especially when he told him ''You got one Brother left''. And they way his mother treated him was just terrible! You should never do that to your children!
Awwww!
Mr. Singleton, Thank you for creating "Boyz-N-The-Hood" and all of your other contributes such as "Poetic Justice" and "Higher Learning." BNTH still speaks volumes 'till this day. It's obvious that you knowed, showed, and cared. Rest In Power.
U forgot baby boy with Tyrese
This film was nothing but a masterpiece.
Ice cube is a legend and the best NWA member
I'd argue Eazy then Cube

Why the hell should they.

"You still got one brother left"
That line became my reality in 2015 😔
"Get the FUCK OUT MY FACE!" Loved that part.
It’s a shame to what happened to Doughboy afterwards. The next day, Doughboy saw his brother’s body getting buried. 2 weeks after Ricky’s funeral, Doughboy himself was murdered.
By his own mother.
@@saj8 Who said that to you?
@@user-ur9wy1lt8z I came to that conclusion on own. Doughboy's mother probably killed him for all we know.
@@saj8nah, the gang came back for revenge most likely. That’s how it works.
@@kiloprinzest. She probably killed Doughboy in his sleep for all we know. She still blames him for Ricky's death. It isn't always about gang retaliations.
They left the most powerful segment of this scene out in my opinion: "you still got one brother left..."
I actually TEARED UP, when this movie said Doughboy was murdered...
“Two weeks later he was murdered.”
Dude had a tragic life and got a tragic end.
Doughboy carried so much pain...
Man this scene always gets me a little emotional I like how he says we all gotta go sometime.
True
- Ey, Dough.
What's up ?
- You still got one brother left man.
Rest in peace, John Singleton. ❤
Ice Cube is such a fucking national treasure.
Having Doughboy fade out was a visual tribute to the end of "Stand By Me"
Interesting you mention that because the “want to see a dead body?” scene also (obviously) paid tribute to Stand By Me.
RIP Ricky. Still breaks my heart 30 years later
The part that got me was that Doughboy died two weeks later 😱😭😰🙏🏾
the thing is this film made not one bit of difference. gangbangers continued to kill each other.. that year gang related murders hit an all time in LA & continued to stay high until the late 90's
Name Less I agree with you. You would think that people would stop gang violence after watching a movie that exposes the harsh realities of gang violence.

MESSAGE
This is one of the most powerful moments hat i have known in cinema. Cube was brilliant. RIP John Singleton, whose vision for this film included Ice Cube, even before he had met him. Timeless. Peace
I get the feeling that if Doughboy actually had a mother who gave him love and attention or if he had a father in the house, he would have succeeded academically or have had the commitment to do a sport himself. He just seemed like he had a lot of street smarts and instincts, something that Ricky lacked. Combine that with an actual focus in school, it would have done wonders for him.
Dough´s fate is less graphic than Rickys one, however I find it more scary.
Advice to parents: Don't ever love one and don't love the other. It's okay to love them differently but love one and hating the other is not cool. Love your kids.
@SupremeEgyptianGodsMan I'm sorry man. Seriously shame on your mom for that.
Every man needs a man in their life, a father... or even a step father whatever to steer them right. One that will whoop your ass if you don't. A mothers love is what it is, but it takes a man to raise a man.
Cube still rocking that N.W.A. LOOK
I laughed when he cussed out that girl when she asked him for something
As doughboy says: "Shit just goes on and on, you know. "
Man I still get emotional over this scene
😢
My heart breaks for Trey knowing he lost Ricky and Doughboy ❤
1:11 “ Either they Don’t Know , Dont show , Or don’t care about what’s going on in the hood “ deepest line.
"All this foreign shit, they didn't have shit on my brother man… I ain't got no brother. Got no mother neither. She loved that fool more than she loved me."
To this day I always wondered if Monsta retaliated for dough..
still till this day they either don't know or don't care about what goes on in the hood B
that line is still relevant till this day damn that's so sad
I'll bet doughboys mom cried more at his funeral than she did at Ricky's.
Steve Borelli how tf did you come to this conclusion
A.K.2K I'm basing this guess on experiences that I've encountered personally. Guilt can have a rediculosly powerful effect on a person's conscience. Obviously Ricky was the favorite so he always felt loved while getting deserved attention a boy without a father needs from his mother. No parental regrets there. At the sight of her oldest son's lifeless body, I could picture clearly regret, about the way she treated him, and knew she could've done better, could've loved him more. And now her chance to be a better mother towards him is gone.
Steve Borelli you got point
Steve Borelli i think they was all the same age
Kennedy Wilson yea same age so doughboy and Ricky are twins right ? Dumbass
"You still got one brother left"
Ricky had horrible instincts. In a situation like that, you need to be mindful of your surroundings instead of scratching lottery tickets. One brother was stupid, while the other had no life to look forward to, because his mother never cared about him
So sad as Dough would be killed weeks later. I grew up in that era many of my love ones got killed to gun Violence.
When Doughboy fades away........man.
I would've liked to see more of their childhood years to see how close they all were...
These types of movies in the 1900’s were the best. Best actors, best directors.
Yes, I especially liked those silent Charlie Chaplin movies...ah the good ol' 1900's
“You got one brother left”
This scene was always sad to me, because Dough is ultimately accepting his own fateful death, while realizing that no amount of murder would bring back his brother.
Cube shoulda got a Oscar or some kinda award for this shit.

If this scene and the scene where Ricky dies didn't make you tear up...you cold and heartless lol. I remember me and my bf at the time (he grew up in South Central) went to see this. Hardest and toughest guy you would ever meet, he shed a tear. Good movie!
Ice Cube rockin' the beard in 1991, before beards went mainstream.
Cube was the man in this movie and still is today, his character kept it real till the end scene, even say "She love day fooh more than she lived me" meaning his mom was foul and preferred Ricky over him, which was so wrong to do.
When Cuba looks at ice cube, it's like he doesn't want Cube to be there but rather Morris...who had more hope
“Increase the Peace”. I still get chills when I see that caption at the end
I will be honest.
I saw this movie like one or two years after it came out, and it is a "good" movie.
So many people probably feel like nobody cares about them.
. . .
If you got kids, let them know as long as you're here on this earth, they always can count on you.
he's actually a pretty good actor
"you don't want that shyt to come back and haunt you"..I've talked to people with bodies and they both told me the nightmares never stop, the restlessness at night, seeing the person's face in their dreams is real like they are being haunted etc...taking a life is no small thing
Doughboy's mum is just as much of a villain as he turned out to be at the end
A lot of people didn't know or didn't care. But John Singleton changed that for a lot of us. RIP John.
R.I.P John Singleton, he directed some of the best hood movies
Happy 30th Year Anniversary Boyz N Da Hood 🎂 Original Release: July 12th 1991.
I just noticed that Ice Cube is wearing the exact same outfit that he wore in the opening scene of Friday
Adjoa McKelvy he wore a green tshirt
“Got no mother neither”
He was talking about how his mom disowned him after Ricky was killed. However, to be fair the mom probably wasn’t the best mom TBH. She was verbally abusive, she had kids with the wrong men, and so on.
DAMN THE BEST PART WAS WHEN HE SAID SOMEBODY MIGHT TRY TO SMOKE ME WE ALL GOTTA SOMETIME THAT SHIT WAS DEEP
"I ain't got no brother"
I feel him on that...
RIP LIL BRO JOEL BACA
🙏🥀
It’s so sad how the mother projected her hatred for Doughboys father on to him. Meanwhile she treated Ricky like a King. Either Ricky’s father was good to her or she saw the potential in him at an early age and knew his talent would be a lucrative investment, so she poured all her energy into him hoping one day when he grew up and made it to the NFL, that he would financially take care of her. She was a terrible parent.
We slept on Ice Cube's performance in this movie.
when i watched this movie for the first time i was hoping that doughboy became a successful hood rapper like ice cube. hoping he didn’t die.
The underlying message of the movie is the difference that fathers make in a rough environment. Everyone in that group without a father died or was maimed
Young gangster: "What I'm 'posed to do? A fool roll up, try to smoke me. Imma shoot the mfer if he don't kill me first."
Furious: "You're doing exactly what they want you to do. You have to think young brotha, about your future."
- Furious (gentrification speech)
It's obvious to those who UNDERSTANDS the world from a perspective other than what you're partial to. Throughout the movie....Ice Cube's character showed having a heart. A heart that was trouble by his environment he attempted to find his significance in. What the movie doesn't depict is the ongoing, day to day struggle in preserving his brother's dreams and talents by those who attempted to pull "Ricky" into the same mentality and world "Doughboy" faced as the older brother amongst their peers. "Choice" or having the ability to choose goes out the door in certain environments. And the Hood environment, of many, is definitely one not to shake a stick at. Being solicited to become "street/hood/gangster" does come with a choice. You either choose to be or not...but there could definitely be dire consequences if you choose NOT to. All in all.....it was a great movie for it's time. Ice Cube, Cuba.....and Morris, portrayed what many would never understand, as some of these comments reflects. Some would say you're lucky to be so damn ignorant....yet many that knows what it is would say what Doughboy said in this clip about those who fall short of understanding the plight that exists being raised in the hood.
most of these kids came from homes where there was no father. Fathers are important!
this was another sad scene doughboy missing his brother knowing his own mother didn't care about him knowing he was gonna get killed eventually and accepting it I was always glad tre told him he still had a brother I thought ice cube was great in this especially considering it was his first movie
