  • House Mountain - The Video
Sculpted by time and the forces of nature; this landmark is visible to all those who choose to look westward from Lexington.
Those two flat topped mountains are iconic in their representation of Rockbridge County and are etched deeply within the memory of all those who live here.
To gaze westward from Lexington one is always reassured by the visual silence and majestic grace of House Mountain and the shadowy contrasts of its ridges and valleys. To see those two mountains on the horizon is to know one is truly home.
Video produced & filmed by Steven M. Shires / PixelProShop
Narrative written By Jim Warren - S. Bount, Jr. Professor of English at Washington & Lee University
    Narration By Doug Harwood

My Father, Carl Smith, was born on the steep slopes of Big House in 1925. I remember back in the 1970's visiting my great uncles, Willie and Jim Moore, still living in their cabin and talking about walking to town and back in their younger days, Thanks for the video, Carl H. Smith Jr. LHS class of '73

So Beautiful! My Mother was raised on Little House Mountain. I have pond memories of visiting family there as a child. Oh, the stories she would tell growing up there...walking to Highland Belle School, digging for sassafras and making tea, trading eggs for groceries and the Hart Family stories. Her Mother would ride a horse across to Nimrod Hall off of route 42 to do their laundry. Thank you..love the video!

As a kid, I always wondered which of those mountains was taller whenever we drove by on I-64. Of course with the internet, I now realize it’s the eastern peak, Big House Mountain!
Well done video. Enjoyed Doug’s narration.

I am greeted every morning out my front door by this mountain. I have hiked it many times and have many picnics on the ledge. Thank you so much for making this video and reminding us again how beautiful it is.

I Grew up in Lexington, used to see HOUSE MOUNTAIN and LITTLE HOUSE MOUNTAIN every day. Hiked and drove it with friends and probably got into some mischief up high in the Beauty of these spectacular Mountains. Used to sit on the Rocks up so high and look down, didn't really appreciate the beauty and where I was so privileged to grow up. But in my later years I realized just how special and all for the better we all are for having the opportunity to have grown up in Rockbridge County !!!

Hey there Jesse Hostetter. :) I know this comment is very old, but thought I'd take a chance anyway. I have been doing ancestry research for many moons. I discovered my great-great grandmother was a Hostetter. I noticed your name, so I'm reaching out in hopes to gain info about the Hostetters side of my family. I found out about a book which contains the Hostetter family, but I'm not sure where to find it. In the 70's, I went with family to see some graves, in house mountain cemetery, and I tried to find it again a few years ago. Could not find it at all, but discovered other ones, so it wasn't too disappointing. If you can help me in any way at all, it would be so appreciated. Thanks in advance, Melissa.
