Guitar Mic Shootout

- Field test comparing and contrasting five of the most classic dynamic microphones on a clean guitar cab. The microphones are: Shure SM57, Shure Beta 57a, Sennheiser e906, Sennheiser MD 421 ii, and my trusty Shure SM7B! For the tests I played a Fender American Deluxe Telecaster into a digitech looper and then into my Fender Princeton Reverb. The mics are running straight into a Focusrite Clarett 4pre usb interface and into Logic Pro X without any eq, compression, or any added effects. What you hear is just the naked mic tone!

57a and 906 are great mics, but to me, nothing compares to an Ehrlund EHR-E for guitar cabs. Also like the Telefunken M81 better than any mic in this video.
Hey, the 906 has the high boost, I’m not sure why we didn’t hear it? Especially since you thought it needed more high end? Lol
It’s literally made to offer 3 options to make it work in more situations. it’s like, THE point of the mic.
LOL Imagine my relief that the mic I've used on every album I've recorded with you won the shootout! For what it's worth I've used the 421 in live settings for decades when available. My desert island mic is a pair of 421s, I can record damned near anything with them.
SM57 for me, 421 being a close 2nd. Thanks, great shoot out - is this a late 70ies Silverface?
I hear the Beta 57a doing the best job of bringing out your Tele sound. All the other mic's took something away in their own way. For Studio recording, the MD 421 could have the advantage only because it is fuller. That will have it where you have all the frequencies there and if need be, they can be taylored according to what you are shooting for in the song. But live, you want that Tele to be right there and I have to say the Beta m57a sounds like it did just that.
