HIDDEN FIGURES is the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monáe)-brilliant African-American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation’s confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.

I love Mary's attitude. She's angry enough to know what she deserves and smart enough to grab it when it comes along.

They are very beautiful! 😍
Was the sirens necessary?!
Speeding in the car they said it was 1961!!!! The year I was born (I try not to tell anybody though, I look younger)!!! Late 50's and early 60's, these girls had hard times yes, and those late 60's, when I was a kid, was chaotic, with Vietnam, and King and Robert Kennedy getting shot, a very chaotic decade. But we keep on striving. And every now and then, if you're lucky, you get a [metaphorical] police escort......

it's sad that it never gets better for the POC
My mother had a car like that and the same color.
I love this movie so much... being a woman in the science and technical fields back then was hard enough, but being a woman of color as well... Wow...
@Chief Tahchawwickah that's a bit harsh. This is a story that needs to be told and shared to all or else how do you expect to break down the stigma towards race and color? This is for all. This is to say that color and race are very well capable of a job and getting it done. If we set aside our differences this is how NASA got their job done. That is the message here.
@Chief Tahchawwickah that was so mean lol at least she didn't say anything rude
@Chief Tahchawwickah im sure you dont look like a burnt chicken nugget
@Chief Tahchawwickah are you african? Do you live in Africa?
Chief Tahchawwickah the lady was acknowledging that black almond had it so much harder than regular women, while also saying that women in general had it pretty rough in STEM fields and still do. No reason to put her down, she’s trying to uplift.
"There are quite a few women who work at NASA" Yep that's how it's done.
Slayed it
That was a great scene just like Janelle Monae said "Three black women chasing a white cop down the highway that is a "GOD ORDAINED MIRACLE"

and another miracle was the fact that they were chasing a 64 ford police car in 1961, lol

You have to love how those 3 talked themselves out of trouble and won the cop over, the way they did!
Oh wow nice dogwistle
@Lord Farquaad why were they in trouble in the first place its not a crime to be black or broke down on the side of the road
@Lord Farquaad 1) it was based off true events and 2) people are people regusrdless of year. Just because they were racist back then doesn't mean they had done anything wrong. They were being harassed they hadn't done anything wrong
@@ConstantChaos1 Apparently this scene didn't happen in real life.

6:28 that sign reading coloured computers had me believing there were going to be computers in there with monitors capable of portraying colour. Now I realize it refers to the humans doing the calculation being coloured.
I DO like how Ms. Minnie made the officer's racial remark into a classy remark. I have a feeling he wasn't going to say "women" at the end of that sentence.
Exactly!!!!
I mean is it more inoffensive that he'd assume NASA doesn't hire based on gender rather than based on skin color? Sexism is acceptable but racism isn't?
You know it! Miss Minnie don't burn no chicken.
I think it would have been "colored women"

I think being pulled over for driving while being black is still dangerous.
That's an unwritten law in Texas. If you are an African American in any car that looks newer than than 2015, you're getting pulled over.
We call it DWB (Driving While Black)

Captain Obvious in the commonwealth of Virginia, just a be black... You can be in a 1978 pinto and still get pulled over.

You>re sure right.
Looking back ... she should have been authentic, bold, matter-of-fact and forthright... She is 'near-God' as far as science/math is concerned.
I saw the white cop pulling over and my heart started pounding. I’m sorry, but for a colored person, there’s not other terrifying thing than an being pulled over by a white cop.
What about a white cop that gets out calling for backup before approaching the car?

So much for the two second follow behind rule. Do they think they are NASCAR drivers? I've always thought this scene was rather stupid.
As a black woman I’m ashamed I haven’t seen this movie. I’m buying and watching it today. I have chills just watching these scenes alone. We truly need our own history books.
Have you read the book that the movie is based on?
*Everyone* needs history books which pay homage to these world-changing heroines. Differing history books is the whole reason people in the south still think the Civil War was about states' rights over slavery.

So what happens to the lady that got her shoe stuck?
Ms. Octavia Spencer is a queen!

Era of slavery?
More sad than that time blacks were slaves?
Or when Columbus killed and enslaved the natives?
Or when thousands of people were brutally killed in civil war?
Yeah.... I think a time when it was legal to enslave someone and when a war was fought over it was the saddest
I think the best part about this movie was how it showed how much math can be done without calculators and there is a difference between physics, mathematics and calculating.
Someone gets it. Cheers
Not sure what you mean, these characters (one of these), was exactly that, a calculator. That is her position in the movie.
hahaha sheldon cooper as an engineer
Zee zhi heng you know Howard's having a good laugh over that one.
Typecast
Oompa Loompa of science 🤣
Octavia Spencer played also in the big bang theory
I love their voices
And they're accents💯
It's interesting how, at least to me, Vivian (Kirsten Dunst's character) strikes me as the most racist, like she's probably not nearly as smart as the Dorothy Vaughan or any of the other women in that room and she's actually relatively low in the pecking order so the racist stuff just lets here enjoy a little bit of power.
Really?
@@NuclearMex there is definitely something to be said for the casual racism of white women using their privilege to oppress others via power struggles. The comment while she leaves “didn’t think I’d come all the way down here” shows that she had a low opinion of the people there without reason. The discussion between them about her supervisor position too, no acknowledgement of the different treatment between the group she was in charge of and Vivian’s likely all white division of calculators. It’s definitely there
Yes, that's a good assessment of how organizational power operates in sociology
This was an excellent movie. I saw it with my wife Rosita 6 times. My Rosita died 3 years ago from cancer and this was one of those memories we shared together.
I’m sorry for your loss.
Rest easy Miss Katherine.

God bless her!😪🙏
Yes mamn! She was such a legend for what she did in supporting our country's space program despite all the prejudice she faced. May she R.I.P. 😪🙏💖❤
loved this film....but it made me think of how technology could've advanced even further without racism....using minds instead of color
Mrs. Mitchell was so annoying to me. Kirsten Dunst did a good job. I forgot it was her for a second, and wanted to slap out of her mouth. ROTFL.
It's just like when you watch Bryce Howard play Hilly in the help. The anger she makes me feel is definitely borderline rage and I have to remember she's an actress. Nice work to those ladies because they are so convincing.
Just like Sarah Paulson in "Twelve Years a Slave", I absolutely adore her but *MY GOD* did I absolutely hated her in that film. 😂
That would of been funny to see three black women chasing a white cop
Ive already watched this movie like 6 times but clips of it keep popping up in my recommended i think youtube is telling me to watch it again
This movie is fantastic and should be mandatory viewing in every school. What these women (and so many, many people like them) had to go through and put up with! And is subtler ways it is still happening. It makes my blood boil.
movie isnt even accurate, the woman who wrote the main code for the apollo mission was white (obama even rewarded her a medal for doing so during his presidency) and she lead a team of around a dozen women who were white and black, this is taught in some schools
this movie rewrote history to make it seem as tho 3 black women did all the work, which is completely inaccurate
@@logana1999 the person Obama gave the medal to was a light skinned black woman called Katherine Blackford. Due to the one drop rule she was considered black.
wtf.......this movie all good is not accurate.
There is a reason ffeff, that you don't do that. If you wet to school yourself you could understand that a movie is not accurate enough to be consider evidence
@@elg7365 -- Who said it was evidence? Not me, that's for sure. It's enough that it gets people thinking about important issues. That is all it needs to do. And it's a Hollywood film, not a documentary, ffs!
For some reason that line, "…Ladies, that there is a God-ordained miracle!" always cracks me up! Goodness, do I love these women! 😄
Mrs. Mitchell's attitude here is why it is so important to understand intersectionality. Because while both Mrs. Mitchell and Ms. Vaughan faced sexism, Mrs. Mitchel couldn't understand the struggle of Ms. Vaughan who also faced racism.
Um humm, "Minnie dont burn no chicken" and she dont play with no numbers on this movie... And she "Ma" as well....
Aint she "The Help" this year!?
the bathroom scene in this movie still makes me cry 😭
Funny thing is that the lady that the character is based on said that never happened
Yep. Fabricated.
The problem is that they're in 1961 but the cop is driving a 1963 Galaxie Ford

Excellent, in maybe a minute, we know where each of our protagonists are headed and what their struggles will be. Henson will be essential for working out the analytical geometry, Monae will be wit engineering, and Spencer is going to tackle management.
I was so angry after seeing this movie. How come we never heard of these women? Why weren't they in any of our American history classes in school?? We learned all about the influential MALE scientists, mathematicians, and engineers - but never about the females. These ladies had such indomitable spirits. Bless them all.
Sorry if this is a little salty, but I really do not care about minor inaccuracies in the demonstration of science/mathematics/anachronisms in specific scenes. It’s never going to be scientifically perfect, focus on the narrative.
Out of three women, I couldn’t pick a favorite, I loooove all three.
Great movie
America enemies at the time were the Soviet not each other
Wonderful line of dialogue,"three colored women chasing a cop is a God ordained Miracle!
This part was serious but when he looked up and said the Russians was looking at them 🤣🤣 that’s how people really thought back then
Exactly! And at the part where Katherine's children ask her if the Russians are going to nuke them and then explain to her that they had to hide under their school desks for a drill in case something like that happens. Every single kid in the late 50s and early 60s grew up with that fear. 😄😆
Looks like a 57 Bel air, beautiful car. Came with a 265 or 283 Small block Chevy. They really knew how to make cars look stylish back in the day and not all of them looking like aerodynamic blobs.
And they get pulled over and escorted by a gorgeous, black/white 64 Ford Custom 4-door sedan. So sad that we don't have cars like that no more.
I only just saw this movie a few days ago. I loved it. The true back bone of NASA work force was in hands of these beautiful ladies. I wish I could meet them.
WHAT YEAR IS THIS MOVIE SET IN THATS A 1964 FORD COP CAR
Yes, someone commented about that earlier.
1961
This was a really entertaining film! Great acting about a little-known story. It's just the kind I like.
What a man can do, a woman can do better, don't underestimate people for who they are
I remember those big huge steering wheels. Mary always had that look of she was up to something all the time. I was the same in my younger days. Had to keep people guess lol. Good job ladies.
1961? The only problem with that is the 1964 Ford police car!
Love this scene. Love this movie. Love what it depicted about the troubled times & the circumstances these women overcame. And I have no problem with the makers taking creative license with some of the details to make a greater point. Gotta' admit though, having come of age during that era & being a bit of a car nut, I had to chuckle at the line where they were 'chasing that cop in 1961' with the gearshift lever of that '57 Chevy either in park if it was an automatic, or in reverse or 2nd gear if it was a 3-speed stick shift. (Not to mention the cop was clearly driving a 1964 Ford!) LOL! …………. Still love that movie.
Octavia always gives her all in her roles and shes wonderful
Janelle Monae is so beautiful all of the ladies were and this is was such a great movie being black is hard enough but we always see to overcome whatever injustice comes our way
So my history class, which is my favorite, for now because we are watching the movie and write down questions. I also love it because it is my last period of the day.
The year is 1961 and the police car is a 1964 Ford. The producers made a mistake
The car breaking down scene is one of the best scenes of this movie. It was so good and so funny!!!! I love Marie!!!!!
They started up a testing tunnel with someone still in it???
They don't care. It was a colored woman in there.
What else could you expect from Nazi dissidents?
Every time I see Janelle Monai, EVERY TIME!.. I am stunned how beautiful she is..
That cop car is a 1964 Galaxie - in 1961.
It was a very well kept secret and a scene cut out back to future 4 movie, that Doc Brown and Marty traveled back in time and actually gave the 64 Ford blue prints to find motor Co. That's why the ladies were driving a 57 Bel Air in 61. GM didn't get their blue prints for the 64 Bel Air until 66.
How different is it to the 1961 model? They might have not been able to find a 1961 in good, functioning condition and had to go with a model they could find.

Minor movie issue, but if the car had a bad starter, why was it stranded in the middle of the road and why didn’t it give the ladies trouble when they finished working that evening? I know. Hollywood.
No doubt the colored women were the best of NASA. They definitely had to be TOP of the top of the top to be able to be hired
Don't say colored. This is 2020 not 1961.
Throwback to being afraid that the Russians could take pictures of America from Space. Cut to 60 years later and Google Maps exists and we are all perfectly okay with it lol

I really like this movie. I just watched it the other day. I pray that more black men and women look to stories like these as inspiration. And that they accept and believe that they come from greatness in Jesus name. And that they know they are not what the world try to make them out to be.
