Thank you, Amy, it's ✨ghosting ✨ (not "shadowing") haha Another thing I forgot to add was the smaller grid sizes! Compared to the typical 5mm used in the States, it's closer to 4mm. And more tips for sticker repositioning: sticking on hand first to make it less sticky! Lastly, using washi stickers will help decrease bumpiness due to the thinness of the sticker paper. Yay!
Im impressed by the quality of the paper really it blew me off
Right??? Same! It’s a whole new world~~
Got my first hobo for 2023, and this is a video that I did't know I need! Thanks for sharing Yena 💕
Awww yay! I’m so happy it was helpful! And sooo excited for your first hobo!!
I'm new to Hobonichi. Thank you so much for sharing all the useful info!
My absolute pleasure; I'm so happy it was helpful!
Your hobonichis are so cute! I love your voice btw it's so calming haha
Aww that is so sweet, thank you 🥺🥰🤍
OMGosh YES to all the above! I'm new to the Hobo Cousin and these are the exact same struggles...but I want to love it, so I will stick with it. Thank you for this video :)
Wonderful to hear and thanks for watching! I hope you have the best time in your Cousin!!!
I think its called « ghosting » when you can see whats on the other page!
Love the videoo 😁
I decided to go with hobonichi cousin for 2022 and with this video im more prepare than ever !
omg YES, I knew something was off with my "shadowing" hahaha yay, I'm glad it was helpful!!
Thank you so much for this information!! It was very helpful! I have purchased the Cousin for my 2022 planner! I really excited for the change. I have used the Happy Planner for more years than I care to say. Watching you decorate your spreads have led me to make this change! Thank you again for your honest opinions!!!💗
Wow, Debbie, that's wonderful! I'm so excited for this huge change for you and I really hope you love it! (But even if you don't, I hope it gets you one step closer to a planner that gives you true joy!!)
@@moonlitplanning thank you! There certainly is something to planner peace. Lol. I’m thankful I found your channel. God bless!
I have been notoriously picky about ballpoint pens since college, and the Uni Jetstream is hands-down my favorite ballpoint of all time. The .38 is everything I've ever wanted in a ballpoint and I have acquired so many bodies and refills in such a short amount of time, it's honestly a bit silly. I strongly recommend it!
Yayyy I’m so glad because I researched extensively, but I hadn’t used it myself- thank you for letting me (everyone) know!! And it’s never silly to be picky about stationery! Ever!
Love this video! I went through trial and error for the longest time and you covered all that I’ve learned-and all the great aspects of Tomoe River Paper. I use Uniball Signo .5, and Zarasa Dry when I need quicker dry times. I look for pens that are recommended for left handed folks as well. I use the Herbin blotting paper and one sheet can last a long time! Thanks!
Ohhhhh I’m going to pin this- amazing recommendations for pens and blotting paper!! Thank you so much!!
Thank you so much for the recommendations! Is it Uni-ball Signo RT1 or DX you’re using, or either of them works out? I have both & Ive also ordered three Pentel Energel Clena in 0.3 mm that I’ll receive at the same time as my first Hobonichi. I hope they’ll arrive soon cause I’m impatient & can’t wait to try them out 🙈😅
OMG, Thank you Yena! I’ve looking for Hobonich planner and Your video has all the answers that were wondering about. Also, I love your handwriting and Korean :) I’m a Korean, and I like 서인국 if you like his movies I recommend watching Cafe Minamdang (카페 미남당). My husband is American, he loves that Tv show :)
Omg hello! Aww I’m so glad it was helpful!!! And ohhh 서인국 is great and I haven’t seen his recent drama! On my to-watch list now hehehe it looked fun and wacky!
I’m so glad your channel was recommended to me. I love your style and presentation.
Aww thank you so much, Susan!! So lovely to e-meet you :-)
"Just get used to it." That's the best tip ever! LOL!!! Love it!
HAHA trying to be honest 🤣
Hi! I just came across your videos & this one was the first I saw & I just love it! 🥰 Your notebooks looks so gorgeous & I can’t understand how I’ve missed your content! 🙈 Maybe because I’ve not been using Hobonichi before (I’ve been bullet journaling in Leuchtturm1917, Nuuna, Archer & Olive & now I’m in a Leuchtturm1917 A5 with 80 gsm paper). I’m currently waiting on my first Hobonichi Avec in A5 & I want to have it in my hands noooow! 😅🙈 I thought it would have arrived yesterday, but there’s been a delay in the shipping process so now I don’t know when it’ll arrive 😭 Altgough that gives me more time to collect some inspiration on setups and such 😌 I’m planning on using it for memory keeping & journaling. So - with that rant, thank you for making my Thursday evening a good one & I’m definitely going to check out your account on instagram too ☺️✨
Oh nooo RUclips didn’t show me comments from like 2-3 months- just now seeing this! Thank you so much and omg so excited for you! How have you been liking the Hobonichi???
Oh yes, the dry time of pens! I started using a Hobonichi for the first time a few days ago, but I definitely noticed the drying time of my gelpens so quickly!
YES, it was so shocking to my bc my energel had never let me down before, so I was shook!
I often put the sticker on my hand to make it slightly less sticky and then I can reposition it on my Hobonichi. Undu also works pretty well
Another great recommendation! I’m glad undu works on TRP; making the sticker less sticky is such a great tip, too!
I loved this
Very helpful
What is your highlighter pls
Love the long tip
This is my first time in a Hobonichi! I just received the A5 Avec Cousin today and found you too! I thought last year that I would never want to use the Tomoe paper but I became a fan as soon as I touched it. I can see it will take some time to learn how to use it but I know it will be worth it! I am a little concerned about this beautiful paper being discontinued and why. Do you know what it is being replaced with for 2023? So happy I found your channel!
Omg so happy you love the Hobonichi! I’m not sure if you heard but they’re keeping it for 2023 and it’s changing in 2024. It’s because the factory closed down :-( Hope you’ve been loving the planner so far!
Love this video! I think I accidentally stumbled upon Tomoe River paper (or something like it) in my Staology notebook. I am GOBSMACKED at how much ink it can handle - and people don't really talk about this, but you can blend alcohol markers on top of it too! They bleed, obviously, but you can blend them really well. I have been really impressed.
I cannot. Cannot handle the ghosting though. I find it super distracting, haha. So I'm gonna try a thicker paper for my next journal. I've never worked with one of the higher gsm papers, so I'm looking forward to it.
Again, though, I love this video idea and it'll be so helpful for folks making paper decisions.
Thank you for this thoughtful respons! and YES, I'm gobsmacked as well. I didn't realize how well it handled alcohol markers, wow! Also, totally understand about the ghosting. It really is a make it or break it for those who dislike it. What paper did you opt for? Would you mind sharing? I'm on the hunt ever since TRP has been discontinued. Thank you!!
@@moonlitplanning I ended up going with a 160gsm from Citrus Book Bindery. It was the only option I could find where I could get softcover + B5 + graph, as opposed do dot grid. I don't know if the extra $20 in shipping will be worth it, though, we'll see.
That said, if you're in love with the TRP, and don't want to switch, I think the Stalogy notebooks are very similar. That's the paper that's been impressing me so much and I can blend my alcohol markers with.
Ah hah! I have heard lots of great things about Stalogy, but I read that it doesn’t take fountain pens very well 🥲 which doesn’t make sense to me if it takes markers well!!! I hope you like the notebook! I used to swear by 160 gsm until I found TRP 🥲🥲🥲 sigh.. lolll
@@moonlitplanning I don't know where you heard that, but it's patently false. I've been using my fountain pens in it from the beginning; I'm pretty new to specialty inks, but I tried my deAtramentis sparkle inks in there and they look beautiful. Similar to swatches I've seen on TRP paper.
Honestly, they're not that expensive. I would give it a try and see what you think.
This is amazing news!! Ok, I'm definitely going to have to try it out when I get the opportunity. Thanks for this info!!
I saw the original paper was going to be discontinued so I officially chose my 2022 lineup based on that info. I went with the Hobonichi A6 (simplified Chinese) and the weekly supplement
Ohhh, welcome to the A6 train! And yes, last chance to use it sniffff unless a miracle happens! We'll be planner twinsies!!
Love it! Thank you!!!
Yayy thanks so much Rachel!!🤍
Yessssss. Very informative. Thank you. Where did you get that washi @ 4:41? Your PWM are a breath of fresh air for me. Keep them coming.
Yay, I'm glad it was helpful! The washi is from Happydaya_stickers!! And thank you always for your kind support sniff
Great video! I think you sum up everything good and not so good about tomoe river. I love putting stickers for my journal and it kinda annoy me at first with the bump I felt when writing on the page after. Once I even punctured the paper, lol. I moved to another journal because of that but end up going back to tomoe because the writing experience. It's just the best. I never mind the longer dry time as I grow fond of this paper.
I also realized using stickers made from washi paper or pet is thin enough so you won't feel any bump, so I started collecting those instead.
Hopefully with the news that another company took over the machinery and paper production means we can still get this version of tomoe river. But in the meantime, let's hoard the plain notebook lol.
Yes, that’s another reason why I love washi stickers! Totally forgot to mention that- great point! And yes, I’m hoping that tomoe river or any company continues to create this amazing paper 🥺🤍
Try the Tombow mono drawing pens. No dry time. Love those.
Ohh mono drawing pens, I'll put that on my wishlist. Thanks so much for the recommendation!!! (Really no dry time?? I'm so intrigued!!)
Since I found Tomoe River Paper I was in love as the paper is sturdy to me but you do have to get use to it. I think Hobonichii gives you free pens with the A5 and A5 Hobo's is this is the preferred pen for this paper. Thanks for your review and just found your channel
yes, it definitely took some time for me to fall in love haha and the free pen they provide is actually the one i mentioned, uni jetstream! the more i research, the more it seems it's the preferred ballpoint pen :-) i hope you like it!!!

I wonder what paper Hobonichi will use once their stock of Tomoe River is finsihed.
Right?? I'm SO curious as well, because I really don't like the new TRP. I'm really hoping they magically come up with a solution to either somehow bring back OG TRP or find another magical paper solution.
Thank you for posting this! I have been wary of using Hobonichi because it is a bit pricey and I wasn't sure if the gel pens will work on them. So I'm glad someone finally answered that, though I already bought a cousin and weeks last month, because I also heard that the paper was going to be discontinued. So I had to get it now, or it's never going to happen.
Hopefully, I'll enjoy using my Hobonichi planners too.
I do have a question, can the paper hold up polaroids? In my journalling i usually tack on stuff, like tickets, tags, most recently polaroids. I'm not sure now if the thinness of the tomeo river paper is okay with that
Ah, the weight of the Polaroid might make it flop over depending on the placement! But I’ve never done heavy layering on TRP so I can’t say for sure 🥺 I’m glad it was helpful! And I’ll be sure to post if I ever try putting something heavier on it!
@@moonlitplanning i see, thank you! I'll be mindful where and how i'll place them then. I'm truly excited to fill the pages in 2022!
Such good info! Have you compared this to the new Annie plans x aura Estelle planner? I heard it has similar paper.
Thanks Sydney! And I haveeee but it isn’t the same 🥲🥲🥲 I have it saved in my highlights I think! But if you’re not crazy picky or a fountain pen user, it should be fine! But I found it very different 🥺
I purchased a hobonichi cousin A5 for next year and am very excited about starting the year with a planner I’ve never used before. You mentioned using a fountain pen. Which pen do you suggest for a beginner?
Wonderful!! I’m so excited for you!! Pilot Kakuno is a wonderful beginner fountain pen! (Amazon, JetPens both carry it)
Yeaaaaaah, with my hobonichis I gotta highlight first then write over the highlight cause it ALWAYS smudges. And I don’t like ballpoint pens.
As for stickers, I stick them to my hand first to make them less sticky. Or else once it’s on there, ITS ON THERE lol.
agreed with everything you said; also reallllly don't like ballpoint haha I've tried, and I just can't. And yes, sticking on hand technique works great! Totally forgot to mention that bc I never remember to do it msyelf LOL
Do you know why Hobonichi is discontinuing the tomoeriver paper? Are you aware of any other planners that use this paper?
Tomoe River Paper itself is actually being discontinued 🥺 but I recommend checking out m.ruclips.net/video/nq6w-GAIgZk/видео.html (she gives a good outline and explanation of new tomoe river paper!)
@@moonlitplanning Thank you! You are always so helpful!
This was so helpful, thanks! I've never tried the Hobonichi before, but I have been curious lately (planner probs near this time of year lol). I was worried about the paper though and if I would like it or not. I may try the plain notebook, but now I'm hearing TRP is being discontinued? x3
So happy it was helpful! Yes, but all hobonichis for 2022 are TRP AND I just learned from a sub that a company bought the original TRP machines and the paper they are producing is quite lovely!
@@moonlitplanning Ooh good to know. Thanks! :)
Not true regarding sticker or washi or gel pen. Trial and error. There are inks that are dark which are my favorite, Saraska Vintage.
Sorry I don’t understand your comment. Are you just disagreeing with my opinions, because if so, ok! I like Sarasa Vintage, too :-)
You can use un-du, but it’s basically lighter fluid.
gasp, for real???? omg... I will add that in the pinned comment. Thank you!
