I am mainly using the crop tool for split screens. I can set the values to 0.25 if my intent is to have four split screens, or 0.33 for a three split. The tool is also helpful for editors who have to place one video on top of another video. Who wants a circle shape of the cropped video and want to place the top video in a corner.
If you don't want to zoom into the shot, there's no need to adjust the zoom slider. Just leave it untouched, and you can proceed with cropping your image as is.
Yes, I understand your concern. The tool is primarily designed for basic cropping adjustments. If you're scaling up or resizing underlying clips, it might affect them. I recommend using the tool step by step. While it met my needs when I created it and is offered for free, I acknowledge that it's not perfect.
