Thank you for talking about the loss that is at the core of adoption. I was 38 years old the first time I FELT like I was no longer an ‘orphan’, or separate. That was when I met one of my biological siblings for the first time. As I’m learning about the trauma response (even in babies) to adoption, I am finding the peace I needed. Being told how ‘lucky’ I was all my life made me feel like I was a bad person. Bc I didn’t always feel Lucky. I just wanted to know why my bio parents gave me away. That is a lot to process through by yourself as a kid. So glad families seem to be giving more emotional support to kids now. I’m now connected to several biological siblings, know the truth of my story, and see the truth of my parents’ devotion to me. My dad is 91, and seriously the nicest, most even tempered person in the planet. Wanna see him go from calm to furious in 2 seconds? Refer to me as his “adopted daughter”. ❤️
That’s a beautiful story. I get an icky feeling when anyone calls my adopted son lucky. I don’t like it. We’ve been in communication with his birth family all along and I hope that helps him feel connection to all of us who love him.

I am a current foster and adoptive parent. My husband and I have fostered more than 100 children and have adopted one child. Our son, who is now 10 years old, was adopted when he was just 15 months old. We have always been open with him about his adoption and he proudly tells everyone that he is adopted. We have told him that his birth mother was going through a difficult time when he was born and he has met her. However, we don't know who his biological father is. He now has four half-siblings from his birth mother. Thank you for sharing your insights.

I felt alienated whenever my step monster would preface my presence as " that's Jab's daughter " or " step"... So you are right on point.....if people are your real friends, they shouldn't care about the number of kids you have....so claim them all like, yep, I have 8 kids... sure do!!

I have 5 little* Instant Love* Grandbabies* 9,8 7,6 and 4!! Got them when they were just babies and toddlers, (they've grown too fast!!) And omg!! I love them as if my daughter had given birth to all 5!!! They bring us so much joy, love, and happiness!! Thank you , I have kinship adopt , Was a long road for me & my son didn't get him in till he was 7 1/2 months old . The State was trying to adopted him out to he's 1st foster mom but because of ICWA Law they can't had to go family or Native American home , I got the called can pick him up have now my son . Now the family on both side can see or talk with him anytime they want & he has ceremony . I just adopted in February 24th 21

Adoption is not always rainbows and sunshine. There is so much hurt and resentment when adopting from foster care. That has been my experience, anyway.
When I was adopted at age 4 in 1952 Adoption was a big secret. You didn't tell anyone, you were never told much besides(at least in my case) your mother didn't want you, didn't take care of you so that's why now you had to live with them. Plus while I did later connect to both my first foster family and my bio mom, I found out later she had lied about my bio father, and a lot of other lies. My first foster family adored me, I was their first child and I was treated like a little princess. So there was a major disconnect between what I experienced vs what I was told, I was greatly troubled. So I was in a failed adoption and I never bonded to them. My bio mom actually lied about my bio father's ethnic group, he was actually Nordic, mostly Finnish (Lapland) and they were told I was Irish. (a tiny percent Irish). I am glad to find out that now a connection can be made between the adopted family and the bio family that helps the child.
Hi Christy! (Christy here too!) so i am a newer Subbie. Your videos sparked my interest because I have always wanted to adopt. I’m 34 and I don’t know if I am ever going to be able to have kids. That being said- I initially thought of foster to adopt. I know the training takes about 6months and I really want to get it started. As far as adoption goes- I don’t know where to start. I’ll look to see if you have any videos but can you go over how you started the process and how You chose adoption agency etc. I just want to really make sure I have the knowledge and tools to start this process and be successful. One of my biggest concerns with fostering and adopting is how the biological kids are affected if the foster/adopted kids replace their birth order. For instance, they were the oldest, but the new child is older. Not sure if you watch This Is Us, but they’ve dealt with this topic and done a beautiful job, in my opinion.
I can understand needing a thick skin because some people can be cruel. It is important for children to be educated & associate adoption as being positive.
I wish family medical history would have been mentioned. I know it could fit into some other the other aspects mentioned, but if you can get any information about hereditary and predisposed conditions that would be beneficial for the present and future health of the children.
Thank you for adopting Afro-American children because they are overlooked and passed over more than other races. Hair grooming for an African-American child is important and you do a fabulous job. I know white mothers who have biracial children and their children's hair is a hot mess and they constantly complain in front of their children about the "curly" hair and they don't know how to "fix" their hair.
I agree but please know most of the mediate family are kept in the dark never knowing a child exist and that's hard. For my family, my Brother was not told, we were not told and it didn't come into the light until my Brother's daughter sought him out! 21 years my Brother didn't know he had a child especially a daughter! He has three boys! Long story short, we have embraced and welcome our Beautiful neice into the family, We thank God for the blessing and OUR neice for searching! She and my Brother are so close and my sister inlaw loves her. Our family is whole because my mom is over the moon getting to know her grandaughter! I just wanted to share...
If I’m adopting a child that was neglected and abused which is usually the case, there’s no way these people are getting near these kids again. The extended family by doing nothing to protect this child or offer to care for him are just as bad imo. Keep them away from the abusers!
What about wanting to adopt a kid anywhere from age 2-7 years old? Is it possible to foster them first and then fully adopt them? Is it possible to adopt a kid 2-7 years old without fostering them first as well? Are all kids who are in the foster care system have parents and or family who are alive or are any kids in the system kids with no living family at all?
The answer is yes to everything. Every child situation is different. Three of my children were between two and seven when I adopted them. But remember foster care is to foster the family with hopes of reunification. Only when that fails and there’s no one adequate to take them will they be available for adoption.

Not necessarily in your case, the only thing I see wrong here is: When you said the family of the child is losing the child forever...where were they when the child was placed in foster care? Where were those family members when the child needed removed from the parents' home? Where were those family members when the time came for the child to be put up for adoption? If the family was so in love/wanted that child where were they the whole time? Why were they not up there fighting for that child to keep them in their family? Broken family? No not really, the family broke itself by failing to provide for the child properly in the first place. In so many cases the above is truly haunting to me. Where is the rest of the child's family, aunts, uncles, cousins, grand parents, etc. in all these cases...why are they not in there fighting for the child to keep them in the family...its like in so many cases the whole family has failed the child starting with the parents, and trickling through the rest of the family. Often times it seems as if these kids placed for adoption and/or into foster care just weren't wanted in the first place....then to torture the child for several months to several years tossing them around between home, foster care, group homes, back home, back to foster care, etc. As if they're just baby sitters so the parents & rest of the family can go carry on like overgrown children rather than doing their job and being a parent to the child they had.
