Alternator Replacement - Mk1 NA into Mk2 NB Swap How To | Supercharging an MX5 Miata Ep 10

  • In this Episode I'm removing the Alternator in my 2001 NBFL MX5 & replacing it with an earlier NA mk1 unit. The good news is, it's a bolt in swap. The bad news, I need to make some changes to the wiring loom so this alternator will function correctly in the mk2/2.5 MX5. Why am I doing this? Well, if you didn't see the last episode ( • Basemap Upload, Sensor... ), I made a disappointing discovery - the 2nd hand PnP ME221 I purchased had a voltage regulation issue which meant I could not drive the car due to over charging problems. This is because in the Mk2's and onwards the ECU controls the voltage from the alternator. However, this is not the case in the Mk1s - instead these cars had a voltage regulator built into the alternator. So by swapping an earlier alternator with built in regulator, I hope to bypass the fault with the ME221 ECU. If it works I'll get a 2nd chance at the ECU install, which you'll see in the next video.

    The only video that actually mentioned that bracket behind the unit, that has to be removed. Thank you.

    Such a great video, really helped me! Only thing to note, for some reason in my case, attaching the wire to switched power would cause the battery to drain overnight.
    The solution for me was to attach to constant power, and now battery no longer drains!

    I just replaced my alternator with q reman unit from autozone. I wish it worked as beautifully as it looked. I'm glad I didn't bother putting the intake bracket back it on. I'm ordering q used unit. My original alternator charged fine before removal its just that the bearing and the pully where both shot.
    I think the generic parts stores ran units don't get things right as far as thing inside the alternator that helps the ecu regulate the voltage or amperage. It's like part of an internal voltage regulator or something available from mqzda.
    So from a reman 210 American dollar unit from the store coming out and a 58 dollar 99k miles unit going in... by far one of my biggest headaches this car ever gave me... along with the VVT Bug. Is like this thing got the covid vac or som"n

      I've heard this a few times since having my charging issue - motorfactors giving folk the wrong alternator for their gen of MX5 resulting in charging issues. I would have never have known the differences if I hadn't had my problems. I would have assumed the NA & NBs were all the same unit.

    - Pozdrawiam :)

    I HAVE PROBLEMS WITH MY NB 2003, I REPLACE THE ALTERNATOR AND IT DOES NOT CHARGE, THE ALTERNATOR ON THE TEST BENCH DOES WORK 14V, BUT IN THE CAR IT DOES NOT TURN OFF THE BATTERY BULB AND THE ALTERNATOR DOES NOT WORK

    hello, I too have problems with the ECU (I recharge it at random 12.4-15v) what is the difference between the two alternators? can i use my mk2,5?
    is the recharge done to you with the right need for the battery?

    Feel your pain, my ms ECU started giving me grief a while back, found it was voltage regulator, ECU was repaired but years after its back, ended up swapping in MK1 alternator, only gripe I have is the aem wideband displaying 'battery' on cranking, guess that's just because ECU isn't in the loop anymore

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  3 года назад

      Hey Aran. Yeah it seems like I'm not the only one to suffer from this issue. Mazda should have left the bloody reg in the alternator where it's meant to be! I don't get your wideband issue though. Are you on an older gauge?

    Nice tech tip! Fingers crossed it works. By the way one of the Car Throttle guys mentioned selling a similar ECU on the last podcast. Can’t remember the model of ecu though.
    Have you ever replaced the Capris alternator? Wondering if there is a cheaper alternative (like the Mazda)than the ones on eBay?

    • @FastRust
      @FastRust  3 года назад

      Thanks mate. Fingers crossed I wont have to buy another after this mod! Bloody hope not anyway. Yeah I've gone through 2 alternators in the Capri, think I got them both from the local parts store as an exchange deal. About 75 quid? Something like that. MX5 reconned are similar price. If they fit the bracket it might work. You'd need an early unit though with the voltage reg and the pulley for a V belt (mk1 1.6).
