I purchased the Pacific Salt over a year ago after watching this video. I have been carrying it almost everyday for the last 13-14 months. I would estimate that it has about 90 days of use aboard a sportfishing boat. The saltwater exposure has not affected the blade whatsoever other than slight discoloration of the "H1" engraving, no big deal. The blade holds an edge very well. Every week I spend 5 minutes running it across a honing steel and it's razor sharp. Never used a stone. Thanks Nutn!

Great review! Nice scenery! I've been edcing the h1s (pacific, dragon, & ladybug) for a long time now - swimming, fishing, and daily edc task. And over the years it's characteristics has changed. They now sharpen up just as fast as 8cr13mov, get as sharp as my zdp189, and retain an edge close to my vg10s. 0 rust, 0 pitting, super sharp, easy to maintain care free knives.
They are simply awesome and I now find them playing a more active role in my week to week rotation.

Great review as usual. Love the Salt series. I have a 6 yo Salt 1 serrated that has seen tons of use / border line abuse. I work as landscaper. Rope, bags of fertilizer, salt, burlap. Cuts everything. Pinned axis still as strong as day one. I'll bet the Salt knives are the least seen knives by Spyderco customer service.

Thanks nutnfancy. Even after 5 years, this video is making Spyderco money. I ended up buying the younger brother, the a plain edge Spyderco Salt 1. Leatherman also owe's you as I jumped on the Charge TTi because of your video's.

A few months in, and i'm 100% sold on this knife and H-1. H-1 is incredibly tough, like 1075, it will bend or roll, not chip. Edge holding is about like Good AUS-8, tho w/ a coarser edge, it holds more like 154cm, (i usually like high polish, but some steels perform better with coarser edges.)
I do wish Spyderco would update the design slightly, add a choil in place of ricasso, (like the Stretch or PM2,) and hide the blade tang when folded. If possible, a loopover clip would be great.
That aside, with the new torx pivot and construction, updated components and great H-1, the Salt series is an incredibly tough, light knife that is almost impervious to anything.
    Solid 9.5/10

I edc a pacific salt everyday. Lightweight, extremely low maintenance, decent point for cutting things off of stuff without damaging the knife/ or what ur cutting stuff off of and good blade length. Im glad to see others have acknowledged its edc prowess.

Surfed with mine in Costa Rica and British Columbia. It has been on plenty of hikes and camping too. No problems at all. Great for EDC too when I'm not rocking my Endura. Just picked up and Aqua Salt now that I have faith in H1 steel.

  • @GabeMacDonnell
    @GabeMacDonnell 10 лет назад +8

Oh, and in Serrated edges, H-1 is perhaps the best steel, bar NONE. it achieves 68 hrc w/o ANY brittleness! It will hold an edge longer than ZDP-189, but sharpens far easier.
I much prefer plain edge, but the super edge holding, high HRC, and ultimate toughness of H-1 make it THE choice for rope work, rescue blades, etc.

I just acquired this knife and was surprised by its lightweight and well designed clip. I live in the Bahamas, this is one of the saltiest and humid climates one can come across, this is my edc as of this moment and I intend on getting another one when I wear this one out. With the cost and performance there are few competitors.

Got mine for around $70- about a year ago on Amazon! Sharp, no maintenance ( Wash in the kitchen sink with Dawn soap and nylon brush, and touch up sharpen). Metal is a little soft, like stainless, but holds a good edge!) NO RUST !!!

  • @salmonking007

since it's made with Aus-08, the SOG it will inevitably begin to rust with salt water use.
Stick with the Spyderco Pacific Salt knife in H1 if you don't like rust and want a folder. It's great if you want a multi-functional blade for both sea and land carry.
The Benchmade 100SH2O Dive Knife is another amazing choice which, in my personal opinion is superior in it's overall design for your stated POU as JUST a dive knife. This is due to the fixed blade design and combo edge. Hope this helped!

I know serrated blades are SO much better for cutting line, but I much prefer plain edge blades. I wish they offered a Pacific Salt combo edge, it would make a great safety knife to have with you at all times on a sailboat.

Oh, I just thought to mention that the 'blunter' tip on diving knives is also there to reduce the risk of stabbing yourself while swimming, not just for rescue use (Does it matter though? Once 'blunt' its 'blunt'). You would be amazed how easy it is to 'forget' you are holding a knife and jab yourself while maneuvering (Yes, I have done that, but if its a 1 in 1000 chance a professional diver will do it a few times a year). This knife is still a bit sharp but it suits its use.

  • @GabeMacDonnell
    @GabeMacDonnell 10 лет назад +2

I've mod'd mine with about 10degree per side, (20 inclusive,) edge, convexed edge, (also took down the sides,) and its sharpness lasts VERY well now.
H1 seems to have high edge stability, and so a very thin edge wont chip like 154cm or even S30v.
Cliff Stamp did a much heavier mod on his, FFG And even thinner edge, and gets great performance out of it..
Spyderco should still add a choil, but properly sharpened, H1 is incredible.

I went to the beach for spring break.... Didn't have one of these (its now on the list) so I brought my tenacious.... gotta add another one of those to the list as well. It got a little rusty but not so bad that its nonfunctional. I was amazed thought at how quickly the steel rusted. I walked out of the water (probably had been in for like 15-20 min) and there were already specs of rust.

Looks funky like all spydercos, but a good knife. I think this would work well if you work somewhere super humid where you use it a lot and are sweaty. I would have loved to have something like this when I lived in florida, you cant really have an uncoated blade in gulf breeze.
    Awesome vid, love the wildlife.

i have this as well... for those considering, it is as light as the famous (and excellent) Kershaw Skyline to the feel. plus would be larger blade per weight, bright yellow handle (for visibility), secure back lock, 'non-threatening look', and rust-free blade
minus would be weird tip (for those who don't like the blade shape). my take, i carry this or skyline but this is my favorite (since my EDC is mostly food prep for lunch and fruits)

Just a note, the newer PS2 has the newer clip design and has better jimping. It's similar to the PM2 jimping and IMO is better. Great knife. I bought mine about 2 years ago and it's been on numerous ocean kayaking fishing/camping trips and shows no sign of rust or corrosion from the saltwater with no additional maintenance on my part. The blade has held an edge very well and the only thing I've done to mine is put a couple drops of oil in the action once or twice a year to keep it super smooth.

  • @whitey211

Where I dive (Bonaire) they don't allow knives for the safety and health of their reef. I wouldn't carry a knife there even if it was hidden just because I don't want to possibly land in a foreign jail for a few days or get a huge fine (and they are HUGE fines down there as diving is like 90% of their economy). I'm still thinking of getting one of these for an EDC blade because of its great rust resistance and edge retention.
    Thanks for the review Nutn!

@Kylef7735 That's my point. The Pacific Salt is a water/rigging knife. Nutnfancy, is claiming the POU of this knife is in a defensive role. That is just entirely incorrect for this knife. This is a Sailor/Fisherman's EDC.

Nutnfancy is great! I appreciate the detailed and objective reviews. I also feel that you should ALWAYS have at least an adequate blade on your person for self-defense reasons. I'm getting the Spyderco Pacific Salt with black blade for carry during my trips to the beach. I bought a Spyderco Harpy for this purpose but the stainless handle is a little too slippery (LOVE the knife though).

@KnifeLover97 depends, if you are using the knife for self defense, aka killing bad guys, emergency rescues, or cutting rope or things like that, then go serrated, but if the blade is for EDC tasks go with plain edge

great vid, once again. i don't dig the spyderco design of the deployment hole, i prefer the dual/ambidextrous thumbstud, but this seems like a pretty good knife. i love how your reviews always tell how the knives really are with good, honest opinion. as for function, it seems you could do a lot of the same with the kershaw amphibian (even though it's a sheath knife), which i hope you review. keep it up!

@Kylef7735 True any knife can be used in a defensive role, but in Nutnfancy's reviews he talks about Philosophy of Use (POU). The POU is about what the knife is designed for and is primarily used for. This knife was designed by spyderco to use as a water/fishing/rigger's EDC knife. Nutnfancy in no way appropriately reviewed this knife for its intended POU. I don't care if Nutnfancy doesn't prefer this knife as his EDC choice. The knife should have been reviewed with its real POU in the review.

Along with being equipped for sharks, mass shooting, etc, other things as well-divers getting tangled in lines/nets, cutting tag ends off fishing line, cutting line out of the prop on your boat, cutting the tab of extra plastic from the molds off the kayak cockpit. Carrying a blade is always a good idea. Have you had any experience with the Atlantic Salt? Thoughts on it? Thanks

I would get a Victorinox Swiss Tool, that is the best I know of. All stainless, I have gotten mine wet several times and never rusted, never with salt water though; and never for extended periods of time. Maybe you can treat it with Frog Lube and just re-lube it everyday at the end of the day; just my thoughts. Good luck.
