This song plays while you are fighting in a maze of big screens displaying video music. Remedy (developer) likes to mix videogames and reality in their games.
This game in particular from them was so surreal to play. There were multiple effects they used in certain scenes that made you look like you were walking in two different environments, very trippy and unique to anything I have felt before.
Remedy did this in Control as well. Not with the full music video but theres a stage of the game where the protagonist is coming into her own and they kick off an amazing sequence with the old gods of asgard singing about the game. Kind of the larval form of what happened in Alan wake 2 but no less badass.
I'm not sure if I been mentioned, but Old God's of Asgard is a real band actually called Poets of the Fall. If you want a real adventure, check out their video for the song Carnival of Rust. Maybe you have on another channel.
This section of the game is absolutely INCREDIBLE. The best part is that it ACTUALLY happens in the game and there is an actual canonical reason for it happening.
A few comments add a little context but you are not going to understand this segment unless you play Alan Wake 1, Quantum Break, Control, and then finally where this video stems from Alan Wake 2.
This segment is called "We Sing". For context, Alan is trying to write himself out of a situation and "accidentally makes a musical". It was a very particular piece that Sam Lake wanted included in the game. The thing that blows my mind with not only this segment, but also in Control on the Ashtray Maze (Take Control) is that the segments are looped with triggers. So while these songs are playing, you are "doing stuff". Puzzle solving, light exploration, and combat. And if you are struggling with a segment, the track loops and you'll never notice. It isn't until you progress that the game recognizes forward movement and carries on to the next stanza/section. Seamless.
He doesn’t “accidentally make a musical”, this is all Mr. door. Every section where Mr. door appears is outside of the rules of the dark place. He is pulling Alan into the in between (show) to teach him and guide him along.
@@Sam-vk8xdI am pretty sure Old Gods made the musical after they went to the Dark Place after Dark Ocean Summoning. Could be wrong but they are the only characters that can use the Dark place with their music (that we know about). I think Door sent them to this "moment" because Alan needed to lift his spirit.
After the Old Gods of Asgard went back in the lake, they helped Mr. Door with this. Probably gonna help with more, paying their "debt". But Mr. Door says he's kind of just doing what Alan's subconscious wanted to see.
Oh hell yea. This is one of the standout moments of the game. For some context: Alan has been trapped in a supernatural place called the Dark Place for 13 years and this musical was a recap to help him remember his life. In game you're actually going around an ever changing talk show set while this footage is playing on screens, eventually culminating in fighting off enemies by the end of it. The "house band", the Old Gods of Asgard, are some a 70's metal band from the game that have supernatural powers who know Alan and have fought against the Dark Place in the past. So in the story, it's not just a hell of a performance but it's literally rock gods using magic powers. In the games "real world" the band are a couple of 80 year old men (the guitarist with the flying V is dead, sadly) so we don't quite know why they're in the Dark Place and young again, but they're absolutely using some kind of power to help Alan. Correction: Should have said "we don't know why they're young again in the Dark Place". We know why they're there, but not why they're not old anymore.
Actually to add on to the Old Gods part of why they are in the Dark Place, they are in there due to events later on in the game, so its possible that this is the reason they are there seeing as the Dark Place doesn't work on the usual rules on time
You are absolutely right on the money: this was a huge risk for a video game, and I don't think any other studio besides Remedy could pull it off so well and actually make it work.
He should have watched the gameplay version, not the music video. The track is a perfect example of diegetic music (just like the Ashtray Maze in Control - you should check out Take Control from Poets of The Fall) and is engineered that way to extend and fill in the gaps when you are running/fighting - and never skips the beat. One more cool part of trivia - the gameplay during this section kinda goes through the main beats for the first game.
150% I just commented on this same thing with the same examples. It's an engineering wonder that it's done without the slightest hint of a loop. It just seems like an iconic 30 minute guitar solo if you get stuck.
That's the joy of it. Whenever I spotted any section where I seemed to be done but was still hearing new sections I'd slow it right down until it seemed to repeat so I could hear as much as possible. 😂. Best section in a game ever. Possibly my favourite game ever - much like the first, and Control (and the sadly much slept on Quantum Break). Remedy figure joint top favourite studios.
Best game of the year! So happy you gave this a go! Poets of the Fall have made some incredible songs for Alan Wake and Control and all of them are important to the overall stories of each. No other developer like Remedy out there
Just saying I'd love to see you play through Alan Wake 1 and 2. They're incredible games and playing both back to back really shows how far we've come in just 10 or so years of games
If you haven't seen it yet, you should also look up "Take Control" from the game "Control," also by the Old Gods of Asgard (AKA the Poets of the Fall). As amazing as the songs are out of context, they are best seen in the games themselves, where they are intermixed with set pieces that you have to play through while the music is playing.
The guitar solo in Take Control as you accend through the Ashtray Maze is one of the best game experiences of my life. It's so emotionally cathartic to have the music swelling around you/Jesse.
Game of the decade! Really cool to see you react to this. I would suggest watching a couple different streamers who have posted gameplay. They did a really good job of making the entire song within the game feel like one cohesive piece of music, no matter how long it takes the player to move throughout each section.
"Old Gods of Asgard" is the name Poets of the Fall use when making diagetic music for use in Remedy games, they also did two songs for the original Alan Wake game, one for the short American Nightmare Alan Wake spinoff, and one for Control. All of the songs are integrated into the gameplay and the lyrics are tied to the events of the game. In universe they were a band that was big in the 80s. The Poet and the Muse is my favorite of their songs.
This sequence alone is worth the $60. I have never experienced a moment like this in a game. Its mind blowing what Remedy was able to pull of here. Every industry needs more creativity like this, definitely recommend supporting Remedy (if you can) as they are in a league of their own when it comes to stuff like this.
For a little context as to what's going on, Alan here is stuck in a sort of dark place where artistic creation is manifested into a physical, very real, form. So this whole talk show thing is actually him running through a manuscript he's written.
This is one of the most unique, memorable and best video game moments I've experienced in my almost 30 years of gaming! This game is an absolute masterpiece!
you should react to the video game gameplay to see the design in the game which is really interesting. you can find it easily typing Herald of darkness on youtube
Seconding someones suggestion to check out 'The Ashtray Maze' (Take Control) from their previous game Control. This was the bands third entry into Remedy games as the fictional band Old Gods of Asgard. They started their collab journey with Max Payne 2, I think, as Poets of the Fall, as they're properly known irl
Nice theatrical feeling to this song accompanied with metal riffs and solo. My favorite from this game got to be Dark Ocean Summoning though. In the game, its literally the song to help you summon Alan Wake out of the lake dimension and it is played while you defend the band from monsters trying to stop them. Very much the kinda game you'd like btw Geebz. Story focused, trippy as hell and a slow burn.
Look up the song from this game called "anger's remorse", it's kind of hidden in the game, but it's so, so good. Very emotional, but harder to find in game so many miss it, and thus don't recommend it. Not nearly as complex but really emotional, given the story.
The first time I heard this song, I could have sworn they wrangled Satriani to guest for some of these solos. Poets of the Fall are a legitimately great band, keeping metal alive in the 21st century \m/
The music overall was great. I didn't play hi fi rush yet so I can't compare them. The end of chapter music was really good too. It was nice hearing poe again after so long
The song ties directly into the main plot, since it's one of Alan's many retellings of his own story. He is trapped in a supernatural place where all types of art and creativity directly influence the environment and this musical (as they say in the beginning) is one of the consequences of his writing. The scenes you are watching in the clip appear to us as big screens while we are controlling the main character walking through an enormous stage, and is SOOOO immersive, it's amazing. The lyrics are about his life and is basically a recap of the first game. Also, the actors clearly had a lot of fun =)
The song is at least 13 minutes of game play. It's amazing how the parts of the song loop invisibly until you complete certain challenges. There's even a spot where you wait by a gaffers tape mark on the floor says "wait for solo"
Still a good song on its own but without the gameplay portion it’s hard get to get the full context of this. Esp how the game waits for you to get to certain points in the “musical” before the appropriate part of the song start. Dark Ocean Summoning next?
Thursday The Game Awards do not miss the first-ever live performance @poetsofthefall as OLD GODS OF ASGARD Thursday at 4:30p PT / 7:30p ET / 12:30a GMT 😎
Before this Alan talk to himself by saying "I need to take control" I think is an easter egg of the song "Take control" from the previous game from Remedy "Control"
So, this band is actually Poets of the fall, Old Gods of Asgard is a fictional band from Alan Wake. Poets of the fall's very first song was "Late Goodbye" From another game by the same company, Max Payne 2 (which you also recently reacted to)
Remedy games has iconic moments in their games like this. Alan wake 1 did with Children of the Elder God, Control with Take Control and this song in Alan wake 2. Very memorable moments
The entire soundtrack from Alan Wake 2 is a masterpiece. If you want another review from the game, the Dark Ocean Summoning is another adrenaline part of the game 👀 and the song is very amazing.
This band is an actual band but their name in Alan Wake 1,2 and the spin-off game Control is different This segment takes place in an alternative world named "The dark presence", looks like the real world but it can be changed through the writing of the famous writer Alan Wake and his doubleganger Mr. Scratch. This part shows Alan Wake trying to write himself a better version of the story which is slightly less horror than the game, to escape this place through Mr. Door "The host of the show", after finding out that his entire life is only a fictional character that he wrote, and he's only an actor playing himself and is invitid into this show to talk about his next book "Alan Wake: Return" The band's name is "Old Gods of Asgard", and we find out that they are actually the ancestors of the FBI agent that was investigating Alan Wake's disappearance. And at the end of the game, the band went into the lake that soaks people into this twisted world, but didn't show them getting soaked into it, but this song is the proof that they are already there. Honestly, I'm still confused about the story, and a 3rd game should explain all the details.
This song is so much better in the context of the game. Alan wake is basically trapped in a ever shifting personal hell dimension and this part is telling the story of the first game
1) Definitely check out the entire Alan Wake series! They are hard games (even in easy mode), and they deal with heavy topics such as loss, psychosis, depression etc. - but they are absolutely worth your while if you can deal with a bit of horror. True pieces of art! 2) The music you have listened to here is produced by Markus "Captain" Kaarlonen, a well-known Amiga tracker musician back in the day, as well as drummer of Old Gods Of Asgard. 3) The band is also known by their real life "Poets of the Fall" stage name, where they are six people. The three you see here as Old Gods of Asgard are: Markus Kaarlonen (OgoA: drums/ PotF: Synths) Marko Saaresto (OgoA: Voice, bass/ PotF: Voice, occasionally 3rd guitar) Olli Tukiainen: (OgoA: Guitar/ PotF: 1st guitar). 4) Poets of the Fall are also worth a listen. They are amazing live and in the studio. With the exception of "Clearview", all of their albums are being produced by Kaarlonen, and from him you can always expect the highest standard of audiophile quality the market has to offer at the time of release. So it's great music, great production.
Man, an Alan Wake playthrough sounds like the sort of content that I would enjoy! I might even feel compelled to like and subscribe to such content. Maybe even share!
Being 61 of age played pc games since 89, this section was the best experience ever in gaming, will play through this several times before I continue the story...hyvä Suomi
this is part of the gameplay and is incredibly well implemented Also the 80's "comparation" some parts sound so in the style of the Rhyme of the ancient Mariner. its a mixture of band styles, buuuuuut def it has maiden and night ranger are there. fun fact, the 3 acts of the song in total sum 12 minutes, BUT they actually recorded 25 or so so the ingeniering group can integrate the song into the gameplay, so they can loop the song in different parts according to how long the player takes to advance the segments or in which part of the song he is sttugling, so there is more to the song than just the "linear" track, its a real peace of work on the implementation too.
This scene is the trippiest of trippy moments in the game, but it's kind of fan service too because so many people just loved seeing the characters show up in a musical (well, more like a rock opera if we're honest) for no reason.
4:00 It's just that this video loses 99,9998% of it's magniificence as it's taken out of context. It's insanely good performance, but in the end it's scene that's conveyed to player real time in various interesting ways IN GAMEPLAY. That's the thing that makes it insanely powerful scene and something I've never ever seen since 80's. I mean how it's conveyed in interactive way in game is absolutely astounding. Certain loops stay in game with video showing in essentially big displays where all these characters are showing like hints where player should walk triggering next scene in the musical. Yes I'm saying this is originally absolutely a musical in lack of better terms as it tells player what happened in previous title. I think the original experience is like 20-30mins for player.
The actual full track without the video is over 13 minutes long. The "guitar solo heaven" part that you mentioned actually goes on for another 3 to 4 minutes in that version haha.
And if you liked this, please check also different side of Old Gods of Asgard... For example Poets of the Fall -song: Sweet Escape. It´s so good, and they have plenty more of where this come from! ruclips.net/video/_RHap8fvka8/видео.html
Alan wake 2 IS one of the more musically focused games ive seen, that isnt directly playing the music as part of the gameplay. If you are any slightly bit of a gamer and like fantasy/scifi, PLAY IT.
This sequence has very little gameplay happening so you can just enjoy the music, the song you will be having issues with is Dark Ocean Summoning cause the music slaps but also there's some intense gameplay happening. Maybe that's why Dark Ocean Summoning isn't as rmemebered
11:03 - The band plays and dances and sings and with them the main character of Alan Wake 2 and even the game's creator Sam Lake is with them and also dances. This is also the person who lent his face to the first game in the Max Payne series in 2001 year. Wow, how not to love them!
There has been No Greater Love Letter to fans than this segment of Alan Wake 2. It's the perfect example have a game development company that not only understands the audience but also their performers. Utilizing their talents to the highest degree.
7:20 King Diamond, as i often have that band in mind. King Diamond would love to have his album be adapted into a film or some type of media; doing an augmented reality of a King Diamond album would probably go over well. But, not any time soon, sadly.
Would love to see you react to someone doing a smooth playthrough of this segement in the game! Or you playing through it if you do end up getting the game.
You should also listen to 'Old Gods of Asguard - Take Control' from the game Control. It's in the same universe and done by the same band. The actual game play where it plays is one of the most awesome and trippy sequences in any game.
The Alan Wake rock opera came out of nowhere in game and was a fantastic set piece. Just like the random indie film came out of nowhere. This whole game was fantastic and Poets of the Fall has been one of my top 3 favorite bands for years before even the first Alan Wake, so this has just been so much fun for me as a fan and I always love when more people find Poets.
This is in the game. The panels of the video are big screens in a maze where you relive the story of the first game in a musical. Basically serves as a "previously on" and nostalgia trip Alan is trapped inside a sort of dimension where art affects reality and he is trying to write a story to escape this place and this is part of a musical number of a weird talk show he's trapped in... it's weird and glorious
Between this, the first Alan Wake, and Control, Remedy has done some amazing work with music in their games. Edit: Because it came up after my comment, reminds me of Ritchie Blackmoore's Rainbow.
This song plays while you are fighting in a maze of big screens displaying video music. Remedy (developer) likes to mix videogames and reality in their games.

those moments in the video when they're pointing are them guiding the player on what direction to go

So, this band is actually Poets of the fall, Old Gods of Asgard is a fictional band from Alan Wake. Poets of the fall's very first song was "Late Goodbye" From another game by the same company, Max Payne 2 (which you also recently reacted to)
Geebz please do the whole Alan Wake 2 OST. It's very solid and all songs are crafted for the game.
Remedy games has iconic moments in their games like this. Alan wake 1 did with Children of the Elder God, Control with Take Control and this song in Alan wake 2. Very memorable moments
This game couldn't be more meta and twin peaks. It's high art.
The entire soundtrack from Alan Wake 2 is a masterpiece. If you want another review from the game, the Dark Ocean Summoning is another adrenaline part of the game 👀 and the song is very amazing.
This band is an actual band but their name in Alan Wake 1,2 and the spin-off game Control is different
This segment takes place in an alternative world named "The dark presence", looks like the real world but it can be changed through the writing of the famous writer Alan Wake and his doubleganger Mr. Scratch.
This part shows Alan Wake trying to write himself a better version of the story which is slightly less horror than the game, to escape this place through Mr. Door "The host of the show", after finding out that his entire life is only a fictional character that he wrote, and he's only an actor playing himself and is invitid into this show to talk about his next book "Alan Wake: Return"
The band's name is "Old Gods of Asgard", and we find out that they are actually the ancestors of the FBI agent that was investigating Alan Wake's disappearance.
And at the end of the game, the band went into the lake that soaks people into this twisted world, but didn't show them getting soaked into it, but this song is the proof that they are already there.
Honestly, I'm still confused about the story, and a 3rd game should explain all the details.
This song is amazing
The three you see here as Old Gods of Asgard are:
Markus Kaarlonen (OgoA: drums/ PotF: Synths)
Marko Saaresto (OgoA: Voice, bass/ PotF: Voice, occasionally 3rd guitar)
Olli Tukiainen: (OgoA: Guitar/ PotF: 1st guitar).
You should definitely check out dark ocean summoning and angers remorse from Alan wake 2. True works of art!
this is part of the gameplay and is incredibly well implemented
Also the 80's "comparation" some parts sound so in the style of the Rhyme of the ancient Mariner.
its a mixture of band styles, buuuuuut def it has maiden and night ranger are there.
fun fact, the 3 acts of the song in total sum 12 minutes, BUT they actually recorded 25 or so so the ingeniering group can integrate the song into the gameplay, so they can loop the song in different parts according to how long the player takes to advance the segments or in which part of the song he is sttugling, so there is more to the song than just the "linear" track, its a real peace of work on the implementation too.
This scene is the trippiest of trippy moments in the game, but it's kind of fan service too because so many people just loved seeing the characters show up in a musical (well, more like a rock opera if we're honest) for no reason.
The guy in a suit with a long face who's always to the side is actually the director of the game.
Utilizing their talents to the highest degree.
have to gonna play this game real soon
this is a first in the game world. these long sequences combined with gameplay....bravo^^
You should watch a let's play of this segment of the game. It's in the chapter titled "We Sing" in Alan Wake 2.
...Stray Cats mentioned 🙂; but this is epic to see a "music video" inside a game. Thanks again Remedy`s Sam Lake.
Poets of the Fall probably had a blast doing the song, being professional musicians who lived the 80's all these cliches are what they grew up with :)
7:20 King Diamond, as i often have that band in mind. King Diamond would love to have his album be adapted into a film or some type of media; doing an augmented reality of a King Diamond album would probably go over well. But, not any time soon, sadly.
If I had to compare Old Gods Of Åsgard to some IRL band then it would be the Blue Öyster Cult.
Would love to see you react to someone doing a smooth playthrough of this segement in the game! Or you playing through it if you do end up getting the game.
Old Gods of Asgard is also known by their real band name, Poets of the Fall; check them out!
please check out the rest of Poets of the Fall-did music for Max Payne and lots of other amazing music.
In gaming terms this was the icing on the cake for gaming enthusiasts. Seriously one of the best experiences in the past 20 years of my gaming career.
Song reminds me of Judas Priest- One Shot at Glory.
You should totally listen to Yoten Yo or Dark Ocean Summoning from Alan Wake 2 as well!
You should also listen to 'Old Gods of Asguard - Take Control' from the game Control. It's in the same universe and done by the same band.
The actual game play where it plays is one of the most awesome and trippy sequences in any game.
I love "Dark Ocean Summoning"!!! The same vibe and power metal!
the whole soundtrack is compose by poets of the fall, old gods of asgard in the game and is amazing
Wow what a great performance and reaction. I remembered playing the original Alan Wake long time ago. Thanks for posting bro!
you have watch the Control Ashtray Maze now... also its worth watching this with the play though because oh man
I love how Alan Wake mixes live action and CGI characters.
Tomorrow at game awards this song will be played live
I don't know why sonata arctica comes to my mind when you ask to "compare"
The Alan Wake rock opera came out of nowhere in game and was a fantastic set piece. Just like the random indie film came out of nowhere. This whole game was fantastic and Poets of the Fall has been one of my top 3 favorite bands for years before even the first Alan Wake, so this has just been so much fun for me as a fan and I always love when more people find Poets.
This is in the game. The panels of the video are big screens in a maze where you relive the story of the first game in a musical. Basically serves as a "previously on" and nostalgia trip
Alan is trapped inside a sort of dimension where art affects reality and he is trying to write a story to escape this place and this is part of a musical number of a weird talk show he's trapped in... it's weird and glorious
Helloween if you wanted something from 80's.
Ремеди немногие в игровой индустрии, которые делают что то с душой, пусть это даже и не принесет прорвы денег. Мюзикл прям заводной вышел)
Alan Wake 2 was a massive hit and I'm so happy Remedy was so ambitious
Between this, the first Alan Wake, and Control, Remedy has done some amazing work with music in their games.
Edit: Because it came up after my comment, reminds me of Ritchie Blackmoore's Rainbow.
The old man near the end of the video was Sam Lake, head of Remedy, who makes the Alan Wake games.
Yessss!!! I've been waiting for this reaction! ❤
