I agree with Sam. I saw this tour. It was the first time that VH ever played in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Ed was clearly “plastered”, didn’t give a puck about anything or anybody. He was yelling at his guitar tech, the sound guy that was responsible for the stage monitors, because he felt that he couldn’t hear properly. During his “supposed guitar solo”, he got his guitar into a constant feedback and let it feedback for almost 10 minutes, while he was bent backwards, on his knees and sleeping backwards. Then, when he was going to change guitars or just didn’t like one, he would take it off and “throw it at the guitar tech” like he meant to hurt him. Also, at the end of the concert, he walked over, stould in front of a stage security bouncer and just jumped backwards at him. It was lucky that the security guy was big and he caught Ed around the waste, feet above the ground and I’m pretty sure that he told Ed to “behave”. This was the worst performance that I had ever seen him. I know his mom died shortly before, but he had no right to do what he did to his stage people and us - the fans that night. He must have been going through some severe turmoil in his brain. I felt for Sammy, Mike and his own brother that night, how embarrassing it must have been. It was the first time in 7 times that I saw VH, and I felt ripped off.

We actually saw something similar with Diamond Dave at a concert where he was clearly plastered before taking the stage and had an open bottle of Jack Daniels (maybe?) which he sprayed out on the first few rows of people. It didn't seem like he was really into it that night and it was a little disappointing.

Sammy had a great solo career and was a valuable member with Montrose. Sammy was the only person who could have made VH successful after DLR left. Alcoholism is destructive. Eddie is a tragic figure. An icon who left a great legacy in music. I wish the "good Eddie" would have made it through the gauntlet of alcohol abuse.

A friend of mine was invited to a backstage party after a concert back in the late 80’s
He claims at one point Eddie had gotten drunk and was fighting with Valerie Beetunelli. Next thing he knew a beer bottle was flying through the air and busted against the wall beside Valerie. He what was really screwed up is that he was shocked, but when looking around everyone else was acted like it was no big deal. As if it was common behavior.

Not really it's called rockstar or frontman syndrome. Most guys who get that kind of fame it goes to their head. Both Eddie and David were said to have giant ego's and hard to work with. What's bad is Sammy was originally brought in to counter how bad David had acted. Then he allegedly deals with Eddie's issues as talented as he was.

Yeah . Captain Candyass Hagar is a hypocrite rat . In his book that's supposed to be about HIM , he ratted on the Halen brothers touring getting BJs whenever Mike did a bass solo . But it's OK for Candyass to cheat on his wife because she literally goes insane . Then he dumped her because he can't be married to a nut job . I don't remember that clause in the Bible to say it's okay to dump your wife if she becomes less than perfect . I guess Candyass doesn't have to apply to " in sickness and in health til death do you part " part . What I still don't understand is why no one criticized Hagar for ratting on his friends and put lies in there to boot . I grew up learning that you don't rat on your friends .

So to answer your question, if I were told I had cancer, I'd be majorly bummed out, but I doubt I'd become as batshit insufferable as he reportedly did. Of course, had he not also been a lifelong tobacco addict, he might have avoided the tongue cancer altogether, thus rendering the question moot. (Ed believed the tongue cancer was caused by the metal guitar picks he would hold in his mouth while tapping. Maybe so, but there's no established science to support the claim. Chain-smoking, on the other hand, is a well-documented cause of tongue cancer.)

I too was at the Hamilton, Ontario show in 2004. It was a shocking decline from the Toronto concert months earlier which was excellent with no signs of trouble. I was unaware what was wrong in Hamilton yet I could hardly recognize the band and specifically Eddie. Even worse the arena was empty and lacking energy which shocked me given it was a Van Halen concert which would normally be "electric". Van Halen was huge in Canada and any VH concert was a genuine highlight to those who loved rock music. I have seen many, many VH concerts and all were very good except this one show in Hamilton. Eddie did thank the audience for their patience after his meandering guitar solo. He seemed to acknowledge he was all over the place that night. Eddie appeared to me genuinely apologetic for his "odd" performance. The band played the previous night in Montreal, Quebec and I assumed exhaustion got the better of the band. Little did I know something far more serious was going on. I must confess I did not sense a bad vibe between Eddie and Sammy that night. Tension within the band was news to me and details of the dysfunction only became available once the tour had concluded.

I never spent another dollar on a VH ticket/music again. I believe this is why it was wise for Sammy to leave, and for Michael Anthony to stick with Sammy. If you respect your fans, then you show up TO WORK sober, and get hammered AFTER the show if you like. But, you'd better be sober for the next one too. I have seen interviews with both Dave and Sammy and they both said that they left the band for issues with both of the VH brothers. Even if Dave and Sammy don’t like each other they both agree on the same thing

I'm sorry not sorry, but just for the very simple fact that Ed completely revolutionized electric guitar playing, excuses any and all bad behavior. Just the intro to Aint Talking Bout Love...just that riff alone. Out of his orgasmic collection of otherworldly riffs. He could do anything all is forgiven. He was a fuckin Genius. Sammy Hagar isn't even a rock singer. Eddie Van Halen is a ROCK GOD. END OF STORY.

Ed had a terrible addiction to drugs and alcohol. He eventually beat it and ended up dead from cancer and other complications. People need to stop beating a dead horse and let it go. As a guitarist myself, I loved the guy...warts and all. I consider myself to be lucky to witness them hit the scene in '78 and it blew my mind and still does until this day. When Ed was straight and clean he was a beautiful human being. Those of you that are so damn perfect continue to run Ed down. He was a gift from God

Saw Van Halen in 1978 open for Black Sabbath. I can't even describe how good Eddie was. I thought the whole venue was gonna come crashing down it was so loud before they came back for encores.

Exactly! Just like Ginger Baker, a good MAN who acted terrible. Ginger Baker even admitted that he was a bastard. Shows that he wasn't

If Hagar’s nose keeps growing at the massive rate it currently is, he will need to join a circus sideshow soon!

Unfortunately, he descended into alcoholism and threw away all he worked hard for. Just say no.
