  • Who was Buddha? In this documentary video with ENGLISH SUBTITLES I tell you the story of Siddhartha Gautama - better known as Gautama Buddha or simply Buddha -, founder of Buddhism, and his teachings and meditations. #buddha #buddhism #religion
We have all heard of Buddhism and its founder, Buddha, but many Westerners, like myself, know little or nothing about this historical figure so important to a large part of the world's population and the history of religion in general. Specifically, 7% of humanity is Buddhist, more than 500 million people. So today I want to tell you about Gautama Buddha.
It is estimated that he was born between 563 and 480 BC, and it is known that he lived 80 years, for which he died between 483 and 400 BC. That is, he more or less he was a contemporary of Western philosophers like Socrates, so that you get an idea of the time in which his life is framed.
As is often the case with such ancient historical figures, his biographical data are not very reliable, since they were transmitted orally for centuries, generation after generation, until someone put them in writing, and usually the real facts were mixed up. and the legends. In the case of the Buddha, the first texts in which the complete life of him is recorded date from the first century after Christ, that is, more than four hundred years after the Buddha had died. And many of them contradict each other. In this video I am going to try to give you the most generic data that historians seem to agree on, but, as I already told you, it is very possible that you will find variations depending on the book you read.
He first practiced yogic meditation with two different teachers, but could not find the calm and awakening he longed for. Then he tried asceticism: eating very little and controlling the breath and the mind. He stayed in the bones, but he did not reach enlightenment either. Finally, he realized that the path he needed was dhyana, meditative abstraction, in which the mind is turned away from automatic responses to sense impressions into a state of perfect equanimity and awareness. And he discovered that the correct path to enlightenment was what Buddhists call the middle path, non-extremism, moderation: neither indulging in pleasures nor starving and mortifying oneself. That path led him to discover the Noble Eightfold Path, eight fundamental elements in the practice of Buddhism to advance towards enlightenment: correct understanding, correct determination, correct speaking - not in the grammatical sense, but in that of not lying, not insulting or defame-, act right, livelihood right -that is, earn a living with a job that does not harm anyone-, right effort, right attention and right meditation.
After his spiritual awakening, Buddha became aware of the Four Noble Truths: the truth about pain, the truth about the origin of pain, the truth about the cessation of pain, and the truth about the way that can extinguish pain. Buddha concluded that human suffering, human unhappiness, can be remedied by spiritual means. He described nirvana as a perfect peace, in which the mind is free from ignorance, hatred, desire, and any other mental intoxication. According to some texts, Buddha sat in meditation for another seven days under the Bodhi tree to enjoy this liberation. When he woke up, he pondered whether he should teach more people what he had discovered. Would humans be able to recognize and follow such a difficult path to understand? He decided it was worth a try.
