A couple weeks ago I had a chance to try a bunch of different mouthpieces all at the same time. I never had the opportunity before. And you are right, Paul; when you find the right one you know. I ended up with another Equa-Tru. Though I did get a different one for my back up trombone.
Nicely done Paul. Failure to give as much attention to the mouthpiece as I did the horn definitely held me back and vice versa, as soon as I started paying attention. Glad you’re posting these videos.
Thank you Paul for the tips on getting a mouthpiece. My band teacher told me to get a Shilke 51d trigger trombone mouthpeice because I can do major scales three octaves, but thank you for the tips. Your one of my favorite trombone youtubers, when you play trombone I always smile because you are so good.
the mouthpiece I feel are the best for me in all ranges and articulations is the Parduba #2 double cup on trumpet I also use the Parduba 5 1/2 double cup and they feel and sound great! very efficient mouthpieces on the air because of the cup design and throat I find myself playing more freely and longer passage with these than with the Vincent bach mp's I began playing with.
I found a Getzen 1 1/2 G was great with my CONN 88H, but did not work so well when I picked up a Strad 42BO. Been using a Bach 3G. Has a much better tone and ease of range with this heavier instrument.
I played through HS and recently got our my old horn. I have 2 mouthpieces in the case and I was trying to remember what I used. 12C and 6 1/2AL. The AL feels better to me so after watching your video I must have used 12C when I started in elementary school and moved to AL. I have an Olds Recording trombone, and love it.
You are providing good advice. I M H O your process should work for pretty much any brass wind player. Currently using a Bach 6 1/2 AL. Sometimes I can get my Schilke 51D to work for me. It has beautiful deep tone. Range is sometimes an issue for my playing on the 51D and high notes tend to be a bit under the center pitch. Don't seem to have that issue with the 6 1/2 AL. It does have a brighter tone though.
Thanks for your interresting video. I'm playing with a 6 1/2 AL for a long time and it's nice for me. Paul, what is your mouthpiece? (the red inside one)
Lead pipe to mouthpiece is important on top of what u say, I use Giddings Webster, works for me, my draw of mouthpieces is now mostly useless, except I have an alto too now, other story hehe
Hey Paul, Im looking at three different mouthpieces all are Denis Wicks: 4.5AL, 5Al, and 5ABL. (Also recommend your own please) Which would you recommend? I would like security in high register but the really round sound. Thanks!
There are as many great mouthpieces in the world as there are people and as he said everyone is different but if you want to try a wick mouthpiece call DF Music they do mouthpiece trials, and the owner is a pretty cool dude and can help you find a fit.
I recently picked up a replacement 12c no name MP from amazon and also a 6 1/2 al having never played anything but the 12c that came with my old horn. So I did a comparison today of the two 12c's and they are not created equal...oddly enough the Yamaha 45c2-12c plays better than the no name 12c...whodathunkit? So the Yamaha MP is a bit beat up (hate to spend the bucks for the OEM MP) as the original owner was a bit rough on it so I find I have better upper register with the Yamaha MP but better tone in the middle registers with the 6 1/2 al. Also the 6 1/2 al is quite a bit harder to control on the upper end and the upper range just isnt there. Is that something I might eventually grow into? Or is it likely a permanent condition?
I play with the 12c and I find it difficult to hit that high range . I know if a mouthpiece feels comfortable is important , maybe i should choose a slightly larger one im sort of baffled and in a rut . Any ideas would be appreciated ?
But what I’d one feels really comfortable, but sounds muddy when you play? I have a Rudy Much that feels good but the tone is terrible compared to when I play with my Schilky . However, the Schilky takes a lot of lung power compared to the Rudy Muck. Ive not played very much in the past several years and my lungs are weak, plus, I have some respiratory problems, so it’s kinda a trade off.
Hiii sO this year I got braces (in like January) and now my mouthpiece is really uncomfortable and tight, would I blame that on my braces or is it just time for me to get a bigger mouth picec
Okay, but-but-but what about the tweens just starting out in band who can't tell whats comfortable, or what if they can't put their mouths on several different ones? We worry about buying a mouthpiece kiddo will grow out of fast. We got her a used beginner Yamaha, and told her if she stuck with it, we'd try to find a nicer one, but I kinda think the mouthpiece should be one that could last her a couple years. Thoughts? Suggestions?...

I play Bass Trombone for the Enka Middle Jazz Band (Best in North Carolina in performance) and this really helped. Thanks!!

An old girlfriend of mine was drum major for Enka High School back in '74-'75.

If only the info available now on the internet [like this] was available to me 66 years ago when I started out on trombone!!! WOW!
Thank you Paul for the tips on getting a mouthpiece. My band teacher told me to get a Shilke 51d trigger trombone mouthpeice because I can do major scales three octaves, but thank you for the tips. Kaleb Malec My band said that was the recommended mouthpiece(for us) and it works better then my old 6 1/2 (before my trigger)
Cool
Kaleb Malec if your f-attachment trombone is a .547 bore then I recommend a Vincent Bach 5g

This video helped a lot thank you and I hope you get rich and who ever reads this I hope you get rich too

Excellent video, very helpful. Thank you Paul.
Just have 3 mouthpieces to try out. Thanks for the great tips.

I have an Olds Recording trombone, and love it.
I currently use a Shilke 51 on my bach 42B Tenor trombone. It fits for what I need to deal with in high school right now.
My mouthpiece just arrived at my school today! Its weird playing on it BC I used to the smaller mouthpiece but I just got to get used to it lol

I need a mouthpiece to play high notes well and comfortably
i recommend the 5g it helps you produce a soft crisp sound, and you can hit notes very easily
@@pdhasdasd7754 12C and 61/2 AL are easier to hit higher. But 5G feels good
how will you be able to test them tho? would you like have to buy a bunch to test them
Thanks for your interresting video. I'm playing with a 6 1/2 AL for a long time and it's nice for me. Paul, what is your mouthpiece? (the red inside one)
On my small bore horn I use a Bach 3. And on my bass I use a Bach 1g
Always used the the Bach 1G played professionally when I was right out of high school. Used a Bach 50b Trombone, back in the mid 80's.
What's up Paul nice video. I use a 5g
5G is what I love!
Great video Paul
Paul can you do a video on playing fast. I’m learning carnival of Venice now and that would help
The Blue Bone there u go! ruclips.net/video/LasfjqvHjO0/видео.html
Paul The Trombonist - Trombone and Music Producer thanks Paul
Thanks Paul!

Does the mouthpiece's *shape* make a difference? The ones you show are all cup shaped; however I've also seen flared ones.
Dhumma Vati yes those all play a factor. Everyone is different so best to try them all out and see what works for u

I am a trumpet player looking to learn trombone. Do you know what size I should look for or start at?
Hey Paul! Do you think you could do a video on jazz playing with a large bore horn?
yes, will do!
So basically just buy a Dennis wick lol
There are as many great mouthpieces in the world as there are people and as he said everyone is different but if you want to try a wick mouthpiece call DF Music they do mouthpiece trials, and the owner is a pretty cool dude and can help you find a fit.
Buy Conn 5 G))
Any thoughts on the denis wick heritage 12cs?
the only problem with this is that the place where I want to buy my mouthpiece charges a $10 cleaning fee for every mouth[piece I try :(
That moment when the recommended mouthpiece is like $200
Anyone have tips for being able to try mouthpieces?
What horn do you play on?
The Blue Bone BAC custom classic 6 series

6 1/2AL or 5GS
I changed from 12c to 6 1/2AL and it feels comfortable
Thank you for advise . I'm getting a new one from the Rath factory soon . 👍
Paul, ever heard of "clocking your mp"?

I just bought a 5al Denis wick Mouthpiece in gold. Would you say it’s a good mouthpiece? I’m still waiting for it to come in
The Blue Bone ya!
Paul The Trombonist - Trombone and Music Producer ok thanks for responding Paul
Denis Wick 5AL is awesome...I like the DW 5ABL even better...a bit more solid in clarity, especially in the upper range.
I'm looking for a decent V cup mouthpiece as I can't get on with a standard C cup or bowl shape
Hiii sO this year I got braces (in like January) and now my mouthpiece is really uncomfortable and tight, would I blame that on my braces or is it just time for me to get a bigger mouth picec

dont worry about mouthpieces yet until after they been playing for awhile like 5+ years. Start them out on like a 12c for small bore
Paul The Trombonist ive been playing since 6th grade now in 8th... so i shouldnt worry about any of this?
So my mouthpiece is not the one... :(
