  • In this landscape photography video I wake up early and photograph a beautiful sunrise at a familiar location. This photo shoot has been planned for some time and involves a winter sunrise with blue skies at low tide, which is the combination I require for my previsualised image.

In theory, you might have done it with only two scalings: the first to place the video gear for the overhead shots of you tossing up the tripod and backpack, and then the second one to show you climbing up after them. That said, it's possible you had to climb another time at the outset just to scope out the setup. I'm hoping you were able to avoid climbing down and back up between the takes with different perspectives from on top. I'm always impressed by how hard you have to work (and make the effect invisible) to create these videos. They are very entertaining, stand-alone, and of course they're informative ... and they help us to know you better. Thanks!

The pinky image is the better one for me.
You do need to return for the lobster outcrop shot when the tide is over the river, but you’ll be lucky to get the moon full and the sky so lovely and subtle!
That’s why we love photography - if it wasn’t a challenge we would find something else to do.
Part of the interest is getting the most from whatever the situation presents you with, and you’re very good at that. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Personally, I don't think that the river is a problem in the photo with the rocks. Those rivers are always a part of the seaside landscape. To me, they help constitute the character of the landscape and can just as well be seen as a vital element of the image. In my mind, you have every reason to be happy with this image.

I agree on the shots with the rocks, the middle ground with the river and sand break up the image. A still day at high tide would be ideal, maybe a long exposure too. For the river shots I prefer the one on the left with the colors.

Of the two images, I like the one with the warmer pink hues. For the rock foreground image I agree with you that the middle zone has too much going on with the messy wet sand and the water cutting through. It sort of stops my eye from journeying all the way through the image from front to back as it seems should be the intention.

Honestly, I don't get this obsession of many landscape photographers with avoiding footprints on the beach.
Maybe it's because I grew up in a coastal town where the difference between low and high tide isn't big at all. To me a beach has footprints - it's a natural condition, and I think it can contribute more to a beach shot, than a beach where all the footprints are washed away.
If it were me, I might find a rock formation above the high tide line, where footprints don't get washed away, but are smoothed over by the wind over time. That might be difficult to find, but it's what I would try to do.

definitely prefer the new sunrise shot. The flat image looks great too, but I love the sunrise glow. The other one I agree is less certain. Not because of the elements, they all look great (esp. the full moon), but they're all just ever so slightly asymmetrical. It would look amazing either perfectly symmetrical or more asymmetrical, but this strikes a kind of middle balance that feels torn between the two. Still a great photo though, and looking forward to the high tide version!

Hi Tom. Thank you; your best video in ages. I appreciate all your viewers will have different views but my personal preference is when you are out, in the field, taking shots and explaining to us why you chose a particular composition and how you executed your shots. I also enjoy your studio vids, when you show us how and why you edit them in a particular way. Personally, I am not especially as interested in photography gear nor transportation. I also tend to prefer your vids when you are in the UK and wish you did far more (post-Covid, of course). Grand places like Iceland etc are all very well but, with respect, it is not especially tough to take epic pictures there as far as I can see - well a whole slew of landscape photographers have done it, anyway. I have nowt against Iceland - fab place but I especially enjoy seeing your skills against the (generally) less epic UK - sorry, I do like your woodland trips, too. I think it would be great to see you spend a week or a couple in different UK regions (I remember your Harris trip, for example) and what about the even less epic southern England? The New Forest / Hampshire Coast deserve your attention, for example. If you have, thanks for reading. Apropos this week's shot; I prefer the pink sky of this shoot but I would also like to see how the two shots work in monochrome B&W. Take care, stay safe and, again, thank you.

I still like the original castle shot, the colours are more harmonies I feel.
I thought when I saw the ladder on your new van and now I see you climbing up on things for better elevation that maybe the van could have a platform on top. Ansel Adams style.

Terrific and actually I like the rocks ..It makes me think of a giants foot.Worth keeping and framing .It's a stunner .Of your two images I prefer the one on the left .Oh grief must beware when I next visit UK .Always head to the beaches .and before I leave I write my name in the sand :) Sacrilege ! To be fair I wait and watch the tide wash the name away :) 👍 Great video .

The sunrise in the new picture clearly provides contrast and structure and makes the shot look so much better! Nice work.

The S curve with the pink glow is much pleasant for me.

I think it is great to revisit old photos if only to see how far you have come on your photography journey. Great vlog
